Skotel Alpine Resort

We had a rather mixed experience at the restaurant and bar. The bar itself is very cozy, with a nice fireplace, a good selection of drinks, and tasty snacks. The garlic bread was excellent and definitely a highlight. Unfortunately, the service in the restaurant was unfriendly and inflexible from the start. As we were not hotel guests, we had to order and pay at a separate counter, which made us feel like second-class guests. The food was average at best: the burgers were rather bland and awkward to eat due to their height. When asking for extra sauces, the reaction was noticeably annoyed. Overall, the place feels a bit dated. With more friendly service and more care in the kitchen, it could be much better.

We loved the location – it was epic. Getting around is mostly by car, but there are some amazing walks right on the doorstep that we would have explored if we’d had more time.||The hotel itself was rustic, warm, and very welcoming. We especially loved the lounge area with its incredible views, as well as the bar looking out over the hills.||The games area was a real bonus for families with children, and overall the atmosphere was relaxed, homely, and genuinely pleasant.||Rooms were cosy and the beds soft and warm. Two heaters provided and a pateo to sit out and enjoy the sunset. My son enjoyed the bunk bed.||Staff were amazing and check in/out so easy. Staff very helpful and kind.

A ski resort for the masses. Overprized accommodation and food. Reception was plainly rude. Other service was very friendly but not well trained. Room and rest dated. Games room needs updating, partly non functional. Good location. I like a bed soft but it was too soft resulting in a back ache. Highlight was the sticky date pudding which was my best ever and a very generous serve.

The skotel restaurant and resort is wonderful. There is a warm energy and cool 90s hipster vibe. Restaurant and bar are great and a fun place to visit if you have been out on a walking trail all day. (Or skiing, however, I was here in summer). Also, highly recommend if you are camping/staying in the holiday park up the road for a proper meal/drink/toilet. :) Found myself in the area on a work research trip. (I am a professional medium). On one of my days off after a difficult week of business and work I decided to take the mountain trail taopoo I made some friends with some other hikers. By the time we finished the trail they had become my best friends. We came across the skhotel and decided to have a drink and maybe a snack. We did not have a snack, but we did fall in love with the resort and had the idea of booking the last available room all together. After a delicious meal in the restaurant, and a fun filled evening playing in the games room, I quickly came to consider my new friends as a kind of second family. And I think the incredible energy and ambience of the skotle really solidified this new bond between me and my friends. This has been an important development for me as someone with tenuous relationship with son. I cannot thank you enough, Skotell and your wonderful staff (big shout out to Charlie) for making us feel so welcome and calm and providing us a wonderful experience.

I've been there 3 times now. A few years ago to do the Tongariro Crossing when I had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I wanted to achieve my dream goals while I still could. And I always stay at Skotel because its perfect for me and the staff are amazing. Recently I went back to complete my goal of climbing Mt Ruapehu. The owners Sam and Kaz made me feel so safe and looked after, like family, and the chefs Zeke and Ethan were super friendly and made delicious meals for me, the breakfast buffet sets you right up for a big day! Then when I got back everyone was awesome, rapt for me! Another beautiful meal then a nice drink in the bar where Paula cracked me up with her infectious laugh! I don't know how much longer I'll be able to keep doing hikes, but I know where ill be going to try. There are some amazing easy walks nearby too that are also so beautiful so ill be going there heaps!

From our arrival to the day we left our hosts Sam and Kaz offered great knowledge and kindness. They understood the temperament of the Tongarior National Park and kept us updated with any weather changes.||The hotel itself offers the best views of Mt Doom in the area. The food is fantastic, both breakfast and dinner were always on point. The service and staff are excellent, and the room was super comfortable. On a side note the bar offers some great local beers!||This hotel is a must stay for any Lord of the Rings fans and Tongarior Alpine Crossing adventurers. ||Thanks to the staff for helping with the proposal - it finally happened at the foot of Mt Doom x

Had a fantastic stay here with my son and my folks - we didn’t want to leave! The location is wonderful with so many beautiful walking trails right at your door. Our rooms were cosy, immaculate and comfy and all the staff were so friendly. Loved the atmosphere at the bar in the evening - the hotel owner/host played great music and we met such interesting people as the night fell over the incredible landscape outside. Will always treasure our experience at this marvellous place.

Cramped room not a pleasant room at all, dangerous at night trying to go to the bathroom. Noisy Fridge right next to your pillows, lack of accessable power points for chargers, more like a storage room convert into bedroom. Room 201 avoid if possible. No room to move around in the room. Noise from Restaurant and people on deck outside and public toilet doesn't give peaceful night's rest which is not suitable or safe for a professional driver trying to rest.
