Our Readers' Favorite Islands in the World of 2023

"The archipelago, off the western coast of Scotland, offers white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and ancient ruins. Skye, known as the "Misty Isle," boasts dramatic cliffs, majestic mountains, and picturesque lochs. One T+L reader said the islands are “nature at its best.” Whisky enthusiasts can embark on a distillery tour to savor the renowned Scottish spirits, while music lovers can sit in on a cèilidh — a sort of Gaelic jam session – at one of the local pubs." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Bars and Nightlife in São Paulo

"With a 360 degree view of São Paulo, Skye offers great drinks to match. It’s on the rooftop of the luxurious Hotel Unique, and you can take a seat outside while gazing out on the city with a birds-eye view. The bar also has a fusion restaurant created by chef Emmanuel Bassoleil." - MATADOR_NETWORK

I think about Skye more than I should. Not just the place though the cliffs, the silence, the way the light moved will stay with me forever. But the feeling. The way everything slowed down when I was there. The way I slowed down. It felt like something I didn’t know I was searching for until I found it. Effortless, grounding, a kind of stillness that reached right through me. I left, but I didn’t really leave. Something of me stayed behind. And something of it came with me. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever stop missing it or her. But maybe some things aren’t meant to be forgotten. Just remembered, gently, again and again.

By far my most favorite place ever to have visited. The absolute beauty and splendor of the entire island is amazing. The people are so genuine and kind. It is an absolute delight to visit this place. But I will give you fair warning, because some of the areas are very remote, you will find that some roadways arenarrow, only fitting one car with multiple passing areas along the way. This is quite common in some popular spots within Skye. Nothing to worry too much about, but definitely something to keep in mind.

The isle of Skye was stunningly beautiful! We avoided all the “Instagram famous” sports and took advice from the locals on where to go and what to do instead. We really enjoyed driving around and touring the island! We stayed on the west side of the island which is far less busy with tourists than the east side and we much preferred it that way! Tons of small towns and villages to visit, and incredibly fresh seafood all over the place!

How do you review an entire island? This was a day trip for us and what a day trip it was. I think driving anywhere in the Scottish Highlands is absolutely breathtaking...because of the scenery and because of the roads! There are few places that I have ever been to that are nearly unspoiled by man. This is one of them. There are small houses, farms and communities on the island, but there are only a couple of places that are what you could consider "developed". What that means is there are miles of rolling hills, high peaks, valleys, lochs, and trees. You can see for miles. Sheep and highland cows roam free. Ancient buildings suddenly appear out of nowhere, then quickly disappear into the tall grass. Ruins left behind by ancient civilizations dot the landscape. It is hard to imagine that anything we build today will still be around in 2400 years. We went in March, before spring. It was beautiful. I can only imagine what it will look like during the summer of fall.

Our tour group took the mighty, Lord of the Isles ferry to the picturesque Isle of Skye. It is a stunning, natural wonder in North West Scotland. People come here to camp, but we stayed at a quaint Scottish hotel. Be aware that there are very limited places to stay on the isle; as only about 9,000 people live there. We landed in south Skye and our bus picked us up the next day and we drove back to the mainland from the bridge on the eastern side of the island. We even saw a tiny, one car ferry. Skye is the largest island in the inner Hebrides archipelago of the many, rugged western Scottish islands. You can stay in the town of Portree on the big isle to explore it. Our bus toured us past the rugged mountains, coastline, waterfalls, castles, distilleries, cliffs and lochs. The highlight for me was when we stopped to see a herd of Highland coos. They were absolutely gorgeous, super cute, shaggy cows and they came running to see us in excitement. On our way to Skye, we talked to a lovely, young Scottish lass working in a shop and she asked us where we were going. We told her the Isle of Skye and she told us that she always wanted to go there. Go visit the isle of Skye, it’s spectacular.

Wonderful wonderful and more wonderful Can't wait to return Our visit was faultless Places to see with views to die for Locals very friendly and helpful, No hostility whatsoever Stopped over in some lovely places Roads are narrow in places but if you are respectful and considerate no problems We were a little disappointed in the behaviour of some of the Hired campervans behaviour driven by the Entitleds that walk among us. We would like to apologise for their behaviour, they act the same everywhere they go... Portree has the best fish and chips served from The Chippy located on the hill above the Harbour very reasonably priced and used by the locals which tells it's own story..

The Isle of Skye is by far the most beautiful place I have been to in the U.K.! There is simply something about the smell of the air, the breath-taking views, the “feel” of the place … mere words will never do it justice! It leaves an indelible mark on one’s soul I can neither explain nor fully understand … but I have not experienced anything like it anywhere else in the U.K. If you visit Skye, be prepared to want to return … but also I would encourage visitors to be sensitive to locals as I have come to understand how tourism has deeply impacted the locals on the Isle of Skye and their livelihoods. Enjoy! R🌹
