13 Best Beaches in Maui, From Quiet Coves to Surfing Strongholds | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set beneath towering cliffs that offer breathtaking mountain views, Mokule'ia Bay (Slaughterhouse Beach) is part of the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District and has golden, soft sand (unlike the rocky Honolua side); winter waves can get quite gnarly and suit experienced surfers, while summer brings mellow conditions welcoming swimmers, surfers, and boogie boarders." - Kat Chen

Google
Good for beginning surfboard. Not recommended for snorkeling. Sandy beach. Quite place. And also low signal for this area. Hard time to call Uber. Should be reserved for uber . I do solo trip without car.

Google
We loved that beach. There is only free parking for 4 cars at the side of the road. However can‘t imagine how people should pay for the designated parking lots with no cell phone reception there. Beach is a beautiful bay that gets a lot of shade in the afternoon. Beautiful big waves, but beware of the strong undercurrent. On a windy day with winds coming from the south it was super nicely sheltered there.

Brad H.

Google
Great beach for swimming, snorkeling or sunbathing. Was easy to get in and out with snorkeling gear. Saw a turtle on the beach! Only downsides were pay to park and there wasn’t a ton of reef to explore.

Vignesh P.

Google
Nice secluded beach around a cove-like area accessible from stairs near the parking area on the main road. Not very crowded. Really nice winds and waves. Randomly had chickens walking around. Unfortunately there's no changing rooms or showers

Brendan C.

Google
Great secluded beach. Waves were perfect for boogie boarding. Other reviews mentioned good snorkeling, but the waves were so big it was impossible to snorkel. Decent amount of stairs to walk down to get there. Way less crowded than other beaches.

Google
It was really windy but we saw a turtle 🤩 And lots of fishes:)))Very nice beach , you can spend a lot of time. Lots of wild chikens and hens🤣 be careful while you eat something 🤣🤣🤩

Google
We love coming here when we're in Maui. Every time I've been there are very little people. It's a hidden gem. Very limited parking off the side of the highway but we've never had any issues. We have seen honu every time we've gone. The waves aren't too rough but also not the smoothest. But still friendly enough to get in. FYI there is stairs to get down to the beach

Casey L.

Google
Awesome beach for snorkeling, body surfing, and just lounging on the sand. Pretty limited parking, which keeps the beach from getting too crowded. Rented some snorkel gear in town and swam with a turtle within 10 minutes of getting in the water. Tons of fish to see and the water was perfect and not too choppy. I would definitely recommend this beach if you want to find some awesome sea life on your snorkeling adventure!

Yelp
Easy to miss this beach. Make sure you have someone to help guide you where to pull over and park. Get here early for parking. There's only about 4-5 parking spaces. We got here at 8am and there was 1 family on the beach already. Once you park, there's a ton of stairs down leading to the beach. Then it's peace and quiet. I'd say it's a hidden gem. Not crowded like the other beaches in Kaanapali.

Yelp
Fun beach pit stop overall. It felt very secluded, there are only a few spots to park by the road but there is no real parking lot. You have to climb several stairs down from the road to the beach so it's not too accesible if you cannot use them. The water was also choppy and road at least when we went so not the best for swimming or snorkeling but great for boogie boarding and surfing. We had a great time watching people surf. There are no bathrooms nearby. You'll also see a few chickens who are friendly and will try to approach you. I would say this is not a kid friendly beach since the waters are in the rough side. Overall, a good 1 hour pit stop but not a beach where one lingers.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this beach. Not sure why it isn't higher in ratings. Kids 9 and 12 loved the boogie boarding here, saw a handful of turtles and the chickens are entertaining. It wasn't busy due to limited parking which made this beach so peaceful and nice!! This one was my favorite!!

Yelp
Slaughterhouse Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. Excellent snorkeling and noodling. Great coral reef, tons of fish, always turtles ! Can get windy and the sand blows hard, but never disappointed by this gem.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Love this beach! It is so beautiful and feels very private. Get there early because parking can get busy, and heads up - there's a bit of stairs on your walk down to the sand. Highly recommend checking packing some snacks and staying a while!

Yelp
The Mokuleia Beach, is also know as the Slaughterhouse Beach, which came from the honolua ranch slaughterhouse and storage shed that were located on the cliff's edge above the ocean, where the buildings were torn down but the name stayed. There is a steep stairs walk down from driveway to the beach, and it's a small local beach, where you can spot sea turtles sometimes.

Yelp
Unfortunately we came back here two years later and the beach is completely different! There is water covering the far left side with the half cave and rocks that made this beach so charming.

Yelp
This is one of the best all around beaches on the island and I'll let you know why. *Parking right off the road, but get there EARLY, it fills up fast! *Close and easy beach access via stairs. If stairs are hard for you then this might be a drawback. *Beautiful sandy beach with clear water and the break isn't too big. great for the kiddos. *Big enough so that even when the masses show up it doesn't get too crowded. *You can snorkel here too. The North end is usually the best, but we've had luck towards the south end too. Its slow in the middle. It's not as good as Honolua Bay for snorkeling, but this is a much easier beach to relax at and easier for the kiddos. *Tree line is fairly close to the shore and provides shade if you want to be out of the sun. This is our family beach of choice when we are on the island in Lahaina or the nearby area. The kids love it, there's plenty to do for everyone and the best part is it doesn't get too crowded like the resort beaches. The wind can pick up in the afternoons.

Yelp
Gorgeous spot! So many great things about this beach. Not overly busy, had plenty of space to ourselves. The snorkeling here was excellent. Plenty to see right off the beach, including ocean life like eels, turtles, and loads of fish. Or, if you want more of a swim, continue around the point to the north and explore Honokahua Bay as well. A relatively easy swim (fins needed), although somewhat far.

Yelp
Loved this beach! It was the perfect day spent here that we never planned! We originally planned to beach hop to another bay but once we got here we could not tear ourselves from its beauty. The water in the morning is pristine and the snorkeling is incredible. Soooo many turtles that also swim along the waters edge! Pack a lunch and be ready to hang for the day when you come here!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite boogie board beaches. We nicknamed it 100'steps when we first found it. Cement staircase to the bottom. No actual sign says slaughterhouse. ! There are some spots, right and left when you get to the sand that have Shade. No lifeguards. No trash service or cans. No bathroom s or showers But when it breaks , super for boogie boards and body surfing Sand bottom. Minimal parking. So minimal people on the beach. Green handrail as you go down. Look for that when searching. For me no cell service...

Dd S.

Yelp
Beautiful beach with the best snorkeling in Maui. We saw multiple sea turtles and such a large number of fish on the reef that I can't even list them all. Way more than we ever saw on any snorkeling excursions in the Caribbean. It is a steep staircase walk down and back so anyone with physical limitations should know that. But if you are able to do it, you should make it a priority. And don't forget snorkel gear!

Kevin O.

Yelp
can't ask for a better clean beach Super clear water and not too many people One of our favorites when we visit
google avatar

Colin O.

Yelp
We've been here every other day while on vacation. It was our favorite beach on the island. Sea turtles swimming within reach. White sandy beach and just the right amount of waves. Perfect for snorkeling or wave boarding.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
It's not that secluded, about noon in mid-feb. on a Monday it was actually pretty crowded. Waves can be on the bigger side, but the water is warm and a beautiful light blue. So yeah, just be careful entering/exiting the break area. There is a sign at the top of the stairs, which no one apparently reads. It basically says NOT to remove anything from the beach--yes, this includes shells! *ahem haoli folks* (everyone thinks, 'no big deal, I'm only taking a few', but you multiply that exponentially by the number of people who take stuff and then you're left with nothing but a depleted, run down area left for dead). Please respect the land.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this beach and we went to quite a few on our trip to Maui. The hardest part is parking, but we went around 1/2 and lucked out with a spot. There were big waves that were fun to jump in and watch people surf and boogie board. It is down some stairs, but a super short walk.
google avatar

Cyrille C.

Yelp
I drove counter clockwise of north West Maui and all the sudden I saw all this camera from TV crew. I was very curious of what they are looking at. I parked my car and saw huge waves with a surfing competition going on. There were 5 to 6 pro surfers and 5 to 6 jet skis. This bay has a nice sandy beach. If it was a sunny day I could imagine myself just relax on a beach. But that day, It was a large well-formed waves that look perfect for the more experienced boogie boarders and surfers. If the waves are not to big it seems to be a very good snorkeling spot around the the north point and into Honolua Bay. Parking is on-street and minimal. There are concrete stairs with a railing that will take you from the ~100′ elevation parking down most of the way to the beach.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
This beach has it all (except parking and wash off ) shade, wind block, boogie boarding, snorkeling, and exercise to take the stairs in. We stayed for longer than we expected due to everyone having so much fun. Sand as far as you can see would highly recommend.
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
Good for boogie boarding not so much for snorkeling depending on weather. We were there during a windy week and we parked and walked down only to find the water too choppy. So we drove back to Kapalua where it was nice and calm. It's beautiful here, sand looked nice, pretty secluded beach just wasn't safe to snorkel the day we went.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
I love snorkeling at this beach, especially since you can swim around the rocky outcrop on the right of the beach to the next bay easily, so you get 2 bays in one visit. Snorkeling is obviously great as there are usually a couple of yachts anchored with groups of swimmers in both bays. The lava rocks provide a haven for fish and the odd turtle and the drop gives you enough room to duck dive and explore. Summer is usually calm, and winter can get windy and wavy. Street (aka side of the road) parking can get a little tight especially during peak times. There are quite a number of steps to navigate and there are no restrooms. But don't let that put you off, it is a lovely beach for swimming or sunning. Just remember, don't pick up shells or touch the wildlife, leave everything for everyone else to explore, and nature in it's place. Oh, and use reef sunscreen to make sure we keep the coral healthy too! It isn't far from Kapalua, so if you are hungry stop off at the Honolua Store (near the Ritz Carlton) for a cheaper bite to eat and free parking.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
A pretty cove a bit north of Kapalua, with roadside parking (be careful folks) and a long stair walk to get down to the cove. It was fairly protected the day I was there, so the seas were light and kids could easily make it in and out of the water. The bottom there is more sandy, with the rocky reefs on the edges of the cove. I didn't see a whole lot, and the sandy bottom contributed to murky water, but it is in Hawaii, all beached are nice.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
Entrance to the beach is 20 feet right of the handicap parking sign. People park in front of the entrance and can hide it. Very obvious stairway. Don't walk through holes in the fence. Super fun beach for Bodysurfing, Surfing, Snorkeling, Sunbathing. Learn to dive beneath the waves and your on easy street for snorkeling.
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
No facilities but a decent place to boogie board and a pretty good place to snorkel. The best place to snorkel in my opinion is in front of the protruding rock on the right sidef the bay. The water was very clear and there were a lot of fish, including a 2 foot red snapper and a 2 foot parrot fish. A couple of other people recommended swimming to the other side of the rock but there were fewer fish there although the water was also very clear. There was a snorkel tour boat docked there so that may explain fewer fish to see. There are about 20 parking spaces by the highway. Walk to the right of where most of the cars park and head down the stairs. The beach is about 50 feet below the highway. At noon, there was still a lot of shade from the cliffs and trees. The beach is also sandy, unlike Honolua Bay which is rocky.

Yelp
Great hidden gem of a beach, if you go out to the right to snorkel up to the tip you'll find a turtle highway. So many turtles coming around the bend from Hanauma Bay into slaughter house. Definitely a go to spot.

Rocky E.

Yelp
Nice waves to ride in. Great sand. Not too busy. Nice getaway. Have to watch the waves with smaller children tho.
google avatar

Ashi C.

Yelp
This beach is pretty secluded. This beach is between mile marker 31 and 32 on Hwy 30 in west Maui just north of Kapalua and north of DT Fleming Beach. On our way to the blowhole, we stopped here. And this was on our list of places to stop. And if you have the Maui book, this is one of the best beaches mentioned in the book. Slaughterhouse beach is a hidden gem, great calm waters, beautiful sandy beach and my kids/husband loved it. Bring your umbrella, coolers, sun block and enjoy this beach. I saw people doing photoshoot here. There is not access for the handicap people.

Yelp
This is a GREAT beach for many reasons: - small crowds, see the list of reasons why below. - calm surf, generally speaking not too rough. - pleasant sand, no reef shoes required - great location, 15 minutes-ish from Lahaina and resort row Now the reasons that this is not a FIVE-STAR are some of the reasons that this place is so awesome. That said, not all of the downsides will be worth it for folks. - No bathrooms, pack in, pack out. - Small parking lot means parking on the non-existent shoulders. - Can get a little windy. - No shade other than far away from the surf. - you have to walk down a good flight of stairs to get to the beach, which also means you will have to walk back up. It's not super-strenuous, but keep in mind how much stuff you really need to pack-mule down and up. Our family spent hours there and will def go back.

Yelp
-Attempted to go to Honolua Bay, but found out later (after the fact) when looking at my phone that it was actually Slaughterhouse Beach (and I think Lipoa Point), attempted to snorkel (but I think it was a little too late in the day as it wasn't as clear), also it's been so long time since I've snorkeled that I forgot how to properly seal the goggles maybe? maybe they just don't fit my face? (have you ever googled goggles? feels weird), Nonetheless it was gorgeous.

Danika S.

Yelp
One of our favorite beaches. Water is so clear and snorkeling is amazing. Feels very secluded. Loved it!
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Beautiful beach!! One of those hidden gems. Bring your picnic lunch and enjoy a more secluded beach in Maui. Good snorkeling and great paddle boarding. Beware there are lots of stairs and no restrooms. That being said it was still worth the hike (carrying my board).
google avatar

Shawnda G.

Yelp
Highly highly recommend this beach! It's a great place to body surf, boogie board or watch body! It is absolutely worth the drive! Be prepared to hike down the stairs to get there.
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
This is honestly my favorite beach in Maui! The water is so clear and although we didn't snorkel, a lot of people seemed to enjoy that too. Relaxing and secluded for an island vibe!
google avatar

Shauna L.

Yelp
My sweets and I really enjoy this beach. I love the cliffs that surround it. It makes it feel secluded. I love how it is somewhat off the beaten path. It has never been too crowded which is a plus. We have spent hours here just swimming and looking at all the beautiful underwater wonders. Time flies when you're swimming with turtles. We encountered some pretty giant ones here and I could of watched them forever. So beautiful. I almost didn't want to review this place and keep it secret, keep it safe hahaha.

Brian J.

Yelp
Spectacular sandy cove at the bottom of a small cliff with fantastic waves of shimmering clear water. Great for boogie boarding. One of the best beaches in Maui.

Crystal H.

Yelp
The best beach in Maui. It's very secluded, away from resort row and all the tourists, beautiful short hike down to the beach, the water was clear and beautiful, and the waves were calm and serene. Absolutely love this beach!
google avatar

Sonja J.

Yelp
This was pretty secluded which was great! We were there on a Sunday with maybe 20-30 other people. Lots of wave action so it was a fun place to boogie board. I'll be back! The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 is because parking can be tough. No bathrooms but just pee in the ocean
google avatar

Stacy L.

Yelp
This is an out of the way beach that you have to climb down the steps to get to the ocean but it is well worth the climb. Not many people hang out there so you have the crystal blue water and very few children or tourists, which is a plus for me. Do watch out for the rocks though; there are a couple near the the coastline and I bit it on one while coming in on a boogie board, but I am clearly no professional.
google avatar

Monica J.

Yelp
This beach is between mile marker 31 and 32 on Hwy 30 in west Maui just north of Kapalua and north of DT Fleming Beach. We came across this beach on our way to the Blowhole - glad we stopped! Slaughterhouse beach is a gem! Great calm waters. Spacious. There is some shade under trees but not a lot. Bring an umbrella and chairs and you're good. I've seen people post pictures of turtles on instagram. Lots of people were snorkeling here.

K. K.

Yelp
Excellent beach with crystal clear water for snorkeling! We saw turtles and eels and not over crowded!

Bryce T.

Yelp
This beach is amazing. We have been to a lot of other resort beaches and they can't compete. The water is super clear light blue, great for snorkeling. Lots of large lava formations under the water along the cliff that are teeming with wildlife and sea turtles. The beach is really nice down by the water, a number of old campfire remains up along the tree line however. Stairs getting down to the beach are easy to use. Make sure you get there in the morning as the little bit of parking fills up quickly.

Michelle A.

Yelp
Cute little beach away from all the touristy beach. It's a little less known. We heard about this place from a guy who spends a lot of time on Maui. There's limited parking, but decent for the few who know about it. There are quite a knew stairs you'll have to take to access the beach, so if you have bad knees it may not be for you. The waves were pretty strong when we went but it doesn't look like a very deep beach. Relaxing and semi-secluded.

Hamilton W.

Yelp
great beach to snorkel and lay out... gets crowded during the day so best to come in the morning. saw a buncha turtles! limited parking
