Where to Eat in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

"Housed in a Victorian home on a quiet residential street, the venue feels like a curious cabinet with decor mixing family antiques and steampunk touches and small Easter eggs throughout. It doubles as a live-music spot and cocktail bar, known for some of the most creative and potent cocktails in the city, eclectic food with Indian, Thai, and British influences, and inventive desserts." - Ksenia Prints

We were visiting from Ontario and stayed here for one night. We had dinner and breakfast before we left and this place is 10/10 on every level. The service, hospitality, room, food and beverages are all top notch. We got to know the owner, their staff through and through and felt welcomed, safe and comfortable. Outside of the very comfortable and excellent hotel and room, the food was the best I have had in years and this was both Dinner and Breakfast. If you can't stay there I would highly recommend eating at this establishment. Whatever you decide to do, you won't regret it.

Google
Great restaurant. We went during happy hour and shared three delicious appetizers and great drinks as well as a delicious pistachio cheesecake. The decor inside is lovely turn-of-the-century and the patio was beautiful and dog friendly. Great service and recommendations by our waitress. One of the best restaurant experiences I’ve had in a while.

Google
Food can't be beat. Servers are great. Everything adds to the atmosphere they are trying to create. Communal servers ensure you always have a great experience. I appreciate their decisions on atmosphere and food... Although it's not all for me ... The ribs and Mac can't be beat.

Google
Great charming place. Staff is very accommodating. Very clean, very comfortable. Short walk to everything downtown Charlotte Town. No fridge, no safe in Caroline suite, staff will bring ice. Breakfast served daily. Great restaurant and bar downstairs. Great food and fancy cocktails. Great experience overall.

Google
Delicious! Sad I discovered late because I would’ve love to dine here again this trip. Will 100% be back. Everyone so friendly and helpful! I had the charcuterie board followed by ribs & mac/cheese and it was amazing. The drinks are also incredible.

Google
On a trip to PEI, we chose to stay here for our 3 nights in Charlottetown. Perfect location for walking through the town - we parked our car and didn't move it until we left. The room was perfect, and breakfasts fabulous. I was concerned the room would be noisy given it was above a popular restaurant but that was not an issue at all! We had two of three dinners at the restaurant. Service was great (although our table the first night was much better than the second!). Extremely pleased I booked the stay.

Google
I went here for a late lunch and had the best sandwich of my life here! Service was great as well. Also highly recommend their cappuccino. Cocktails also looked amazing but didn't get to try any. Would return next time I'm in Charlottetown.

Google
We booked a table for four at 9pm. A bit late, but it was booked solid on a Thursday evening and we wanted to try it. It’s the best spot in Charlottetown for a nice dinner and drinks. Cocktails were amazing and the food was fantastic. I had the halibut, which was amazing. The only thing I’d say would be that it needs a few veggies, but that’s me. I got some on the side. I highly recommend the charcuterie board for sharing. Found out afterwards they are a boutique hotel and have three rooms for rent. Would love to come back and try that. Also found out that the name comes from the old circus that was in Charlottetown. Interesting history.

Yelp
This Mushroom Toast was amazing. It was recommended by my server. I was skeptical with the poached eggs on top, but it was really really good!

Brandy G.

Yelp
This place is very unique. The service was good. It was busy. But the food was excellent.

Stephen G.

Yelp
Great breakfast in an old Victorian house. Charming and cozy. Service was very friendly. Great atmosphere. Excellent food. Based on our breakfast/brunch would love to return for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
The inn we had booked in Charlottetown (which will remain nameless) lost our reservation. To their credit, they found us a room here, and we're glad they did. The establishment is primarily a gastropub, but they have 3 rooms upstairs and we were perfectly happy with ours. No TV, but a private balcony. The owners were nothing but cordial and accommodating. We ate a very delicious breakfast of eggs benedict here. If we are ever back in Charlottetown, I would definitely stay here again, and probably try to book dinner too, since their breakfast was so good. Highly recommended. If you want a room, definitely make a reservation, as they only have three. If you're staying somewhere else, have a meal here. You probably will need a reservation for that too.

Yelp
Delicious charcuterie board accompanied by well constructed unusual drink combinations makes it a fantastic experience . The decor is based on Victorian circus so it is elegantly fun. Service was attentive and they had a welcoming vibe . Great place to relax.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Absolutely amazing! Without a doubt, the best gumbo I have ever enjoyed in a restaurant outside of New Orleans! My compliments to the Chef, your gumbo hit every high point - from the first taste, omg, perfectly seasoned, I could taste just about every ingredient - the sausage, the chicken, the veggies -cooked perfectly al dente, the pepper, salt, perfectly seasoned! The finish ramped up the spice heat - to a perfect level. Just enough spice heat to make it memorable. And the subtleness that the taste finished with was again amazing. I would challenge Bobby Flay with this dish! Ok, enough on the food. The service was excellent, from the warm greeting as we walked in the door all the way through the meal. Attentive in every way! As for the ambiance - what can I say about a restaurant/bar in a beautifully restored and appointed turn of the century home! Excellent in every way. They say we eat with our eyes first, and these folks take that to a new level!!! Well done owners and team of Slaymaker & Nichols, well done!!! One more thing, We have eaten gumbo on our travels throughout the Southern US - we lived in Florida for a while - so we are no strangers to it. This is award winning gumbo, you will definitely enjoy it!

Yelp
Staff were super nice. We wanted to sit on the patio but it started to spit rain so they graciously moved us inside. Decor is fun and a little fancy but can dress casual. Everyone loved their food. I got the lobster Bao which was a top seller. Sooooo good. Bun was so soft and fresh. Lots of lobster. Crab cake benny had great flavor and good portion. Tuna taco was my least favorite but I think it was the kimchi flavor I'm not a fan of . Overall 100% recommend this one.
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
Service was perfect, including answering all questions about food and providing input on specific dishes, and making wine suggestions. Decor is comfortable, cozy without being crowded. We tried the crab cakes, Green Salmon and Seafood Gratinée. We enjoyed everything and all was beautifully prepared and seasoned.

Yelp
The atmosphere and music are amazing! I enjoy the individual dish's that are just the right size plus the specials are perfect for sharing! The Severs are very attentive and always friendly!

Yelp
This was an excellent choice! We sat in the covered area right off the street and we got to watch street-things happen. A man yelled at me on his bicycle, someone got pulled over - did I care? No! This is what one hopes for when sitting outside. We also had some lovely chats with the couple next to us. The service was excellent! Very attentive and helpful, but with the right amount of, 'I'll let you be.' The food was also very good. The menu online wasn't the most current which made my wife struggle for a moment on what to get. And yet, out of the darkness of the stomach, light. We got "Let's Go Mushrooms!" for the app. I love mushrooms and my wife wasn't sure - but those creamy cremini and umami-rich portabellas changed her mind. It was an excellent dish and it accomplished mush more (see?! see?!) than just being tasty. A convert was born. We also got Seafood Bake - it was decadent and rich, full of unctuous joy. The proteins, as fresh as they can be, sang in unison to create a choral coral effect. Splendid. I'm writing this review now months later because for Christmas Dinner, I'll attempt to make the Let's Go Mushrooms for our app. It was a joy that needs to be shared!

Yelp
A darker cocktail lounge vibe with great bar menu and amazing service. Excellent craft cocktails (maybe the best on the island). Varied menu at the bar. We'd come back.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Charlottetown with the BEST service too! Love how the menu slightly changes with the seasons and the cocktails are awesome. I have never been disappointed here. Can't wait to try brunch! Small and swanky inside and very cute intimate vibe. A must try for anyone in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Brunch was incredible! Beautiful decor, Intimate and upscale but still casual vibe and super friendly & kind service. We just loved the whole experience. We ordered the crabcake eggs Benedict and the wakey wakey breakfast with coffee and beers. All was wonderful.... Can't wait to come back!

Lisa O.

Yelp
Restaurant is super cool and intimate. Would be great for a date night or special occasion. Menu is limited. Lots of very good appetizer options but main course options are a little limited.

Yelp
Dinner was absolutely fantastic. We ordered the cerviche on avocado, the butter board, and the lobster bao buns to split. I had the portobello wellington and my husband had the seafood bake. He said it was the best seafood bake he has ever had. The butter board was heavenly, it was cesear salad inspired. The bao buns were perfect and who knew radish tasted so good with lobster Also ordered the PB&J Old Fashioned (which came with 2 cookies) and the strawberry mojito. The staff was also excellent! Especially Katherine, I think was her name. We can't wait to go back!

Mandy C.

Yelp
AMAZING! My husband and I enjoyed our experience so much we returned again the following evening. Entree and appetizers were well presented and delicious. Cocktails are to die for! Ambiance is cozy and "instagramable" without feeling cold and ritzy. Servers are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating with dietary restrictions. Would highly recommend!

Denise A.

Yelp
Damn! The food was on point with the flavors and drinks perfect! The Birria Tacos were amazing (I'm Mexican) and the Halibut the best over had in many years! Definitely recommend this Bistro, staff, ambience, and incredible food!

Rich P.

Yelp
Not sure what is Portuguese about it. Sat outside. Overall food was good. Mussels starter was delicious but a bit on the small side. Halibut was good. Lobster burger was essentially a lobster salad over powered by aioli on a bun. Nothing burgery about it other than the bun. Triple threat burger very tasty. Potatoes served with burgers not at all hot, tasty but room temperature. Mousse desserts are to be avoided, incredibly disappointing. Server noticed we ate a tiny bit of it and did not offer to reverse it off the bill when we quickly refused it take it with us - complete waste of $12. The marinara the mussels was served in was very tasty and asked for some bread to soak up the left over sauce. Was charged additional 4.50 for a slice of toast, a bit excessive. Service was good and server was attentive other than not addressing the dessert issue. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Wow. We loved this restaurant! They called several times to ensure our tables were still reserved because we were delayed at two border crossings for hours taking COVID tests. The manager couldn't have been more helpful or charming. He was good to recommend favorites. We LOVED the food. We tried charcuterie boards, salads, and desserts.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
The charcuterie board was amazing! It's nice to see some seafood on the board instead of the usual meat & cheese. We loved the pickled elements specifically the watermelon & grapes. I enjoyed my potato crusted haddock main with potato dauphinoise (my first time & it was my favorite part of the dish). The roasted veggies were also my fav... pretty much all the veggies which tells you how well they do it since I'm a meat eater. Unfortunately my husband's main (piri piri chicken) was dry plus they added an element to the dish without consulting him. When we told our server, she took it off the bill which was really kind of her to do. Lastly, their blueberry coconut mojito (no alcohol) was amazing!

Esther C.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere and service, have dined there at least a dozen times for brunch and apps, every time it's 5 stars.

Yelp
A hidden gem tucked away on a side street is where you'll find this amazing local gastro. We stopped by here for dinner as our first restaurant and it did not disappoint! Laura was exceptional, friendly and attentive to us, checking at the right time for our orders and anything else we needed. Food and drinks were delicious, fresh and reasonably priced at the perfect portion to satisfy our hunger. Try the slaymaker house lager and raseberry radler. Burger is a must, flavoured with an amazing sauce and juicy burger meat. PEI blue dot steak also just melts in your mouth. If you're a crème brûlée fan, you must have that for dessert. Overall exceeding our expectations and would definitely go back again.

Yelp
We had visited the blue mussel and loved it. Were told about the owners other restaurant in Charlottetown and wanted to try it. Started out very nice. Lovely tables outside - very cozy with umbrellas, blankets and patio lights. Food was delicious. Wine list very limited but average. Canada seems more into beer than wine. Coming from the US that's different. We were having a wonderful evening until the two couples to our left began rudely making fun of religious people very loudly. Their conversation was very offensive and not appropriate for the setting. More appropriate for a loud bar area if appropriate at all. They then continued loudly discussing American politics and very loudly giving their opinions and insults to a particular US Presidential candidate all the while saying they all were Canadian. We found it all too disturbing. It ruined a perfectly good day and evening. My advice would be to get a reservation inside and hope these couples or ones like them are not your neighbors. One way to get visitors from other countries not to visit your tourist areas is to talk rudely about them.

Yelp
Amazing service and quality! We love to visit this fine establishment. The food is always top notch.

Janice G.

Yelp
Service lacking. We went partly because of reviews that raved about the cocktails. No reservation, so we were prepared to be turned away. However, host said he would clear a place at the bar. He quickly did that, and we sat down in front of a busy bartender. It would have been hospitable to at least make eye contact, perhaps half a smile, or some acknowledgment that we existed, but, alas, it was not to be. After 10-15 minutes, a waitress appeared to ask if we wanted to order drinks or food. Apparently it is basically a service bar, where the bartender just makes drinks, and does not interact with the customers. OK, that's all right, just let the customer know what to expect. He was extremely busy making drinks for the whole place. Now I'm nitpicking, but I ordered an Old Fashioned, not real sweet from the waitress, who was pleasant. It came very sweet, so I doubt the bartender got the message. Fish cakes were OK, and the meatball appetizer was good. The initial impression was unfriendliness, not hospitality, and I was getting ready to leave when the waitress appeared, so we stayed. Just a little friendliness would have created a better impression.

Yelp

Gary A B.

Yelp
Had dinner at Nicholas and Slaymaker last night , it was a special occasion . The food was amazing as was the service . However the noise here is more suited to a pub not a higher end establishment ,

Yelp
Great atmosphere, extremely friendly staff, really good food! Highly recommend the Potato Crusted Haddock.

Michael N.

Yelp
Excellent food, great selection and fantastic service. What more could you want from a restaurant. Oh yeah, good selection of draft beers as well. Highly recommend.

George H.

Yelp
Appetizers were great- Mussels and Burrata a must Halibut is the best I have tested in many years in Charlottetown. Great servers, very friendly and attentive!! Can't wait to go back before we head home to San Jose. Deborah

Yelp
Favourite place to eat in Charlottetown, nothing comes close to it. Modern , fresh food with options for vegetarians. Great drink menu. Excellent service. Been there 4 times in past year and always delicious with great experiences.
google avatar

Kathleen B.

Yelp
Delicious appetizer and entree. Fresh seafood and fabulous flavors. Great ambiance and friendly staff. Easy parking Highly recommend.

Tyler C.

Yelp
The food is great, and the menu does change from time to time. The service has always been excellent. They have a great brunch menu as well. Tonight a group of my friends went here and ordered a charcuterie board and our meals. They forgot the charcuterie and it was not a big deal at all, we had more than enough food from the meal. When we told them about it they brought us a dessert charcuterie board of all of their desserts for free and it was incredible. It was totally unnecessary; but the staff at this place have always been above and beyond. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
You'd think a mushroom avocado tower couldn't be anything surprising, but this one is ka-pow!! Cocktails, salads...service, everything is outstanding.

Yelp
This little restaurant in downtown Charlottetown has a wonderful atmosphere. The wait staff is very attentive, and the menu has a diverse selection.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Food was served quickly and of great quality. The carrot cake was very delicious. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
We had the pesto ring, weenie in the comfort chicken, both of which were really yummy.

Kathy K.

Yelp
OMG!! Soooo good! Everything was fabulous Drinks, cuisine, staff and other diners. Truly a delicious and fun experience!

Yelp
Stayed here during the Shellfish festival for four nights and ate here multiple times. Highly recommend. Room was like stepping back in time. Massive tub, brass fixtures, five star without the fuss. Staff were very easy going and paid attention to all the little details. Details matter. Thanks to everyone for making our first visit to the island even more enjoyable.
google avatar

Randy C.

Yelp
This is a unique dining experience and the food is delicious .The same people own the highly successful Blue Mussel Cafe in Rustico ; and this group knows how to serve some great dishes and offer friendly attentive service . The restaurant itself is beautifully appointed and now has a gorgeous deck for outdoor dining . The meals can be shared as small plates or eaten individually . We have tried quite a few items; some of our favorites include - Little French Dips ( must start for your meal ! ) , Chicken Wellington Pot Pie , Patatas Bravas and Chicken Aji Verde . Desserts are wicked and the Butter Tart Cheesecake is decadent. In summary , this new dining experience in Charlottetown is well worth trying !

Yelp
We went here in October and fell in love. We couldn't wait to go back and we were so excited to return. It was far from our experience in the fall. The staff, especially the gentleman who greeted everyone, I think he may be the manager, seemed stressed and/or unhappy. Transactional. The food was meh. We were so disappointed. We will try it again in a few months when we can sit outside, less cramped. Fingers crossed.

Melissa D.

Yelp
The staff was lovely and attentive, the cocktails were delicious, and the crab cakes were excellent. I would definitely return.

Yelp
I would NOT hesitate to come back here. The food was fantastic but it was some of the best service I've ever experienced. We walked in w/o a reservation ( on a Monday night, but it was still pretty busy). They initially sat us in the bar area, but the host noticed that a 2-top became available so he quickly moved us there. Our server came over and took our order - and helped my wife pick out the perfect drink - taking attention to detail to ensure that she would like her non alcoholic beverage: going through the ingredients and then swapping one out for her. We then ordered food. We both had the beef tenderloin. I ordered mine medium and my wife ordered her medium well. They NAILED both of them. We kept having multiple servers check on us. Refills, checking on us to ensure the food was ok - they were very attentive. Many brewpubs that I've been to are much less attentive and looking to turnover the table. There's a great 'culture' here that you could tell from the moment I walked in. They're doing it right. Go - you'll have a great time AND have great food!!

Yelp
Not bad!! Good variety, unique atmosphere. Little pricey but very good service. Food was good (didn't order anything overly experimental). Would go back

Katherine S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the decorative approach in the restaurant. Made for a great ambiance. Food was good, service was great.

Luke T.

Yelp
We had a wonderful, kind, intelligent waiter who helped my wife with her gluten allergy while being entertaining and fun. My Scallop pasta meal was the best meal I had for our entire 1-week vacation! And the back of the menu had a great description of the history of their location. Definitely coming back next time we're in Town.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Our family of six, including four children ages 15, 13, 11, and and 9, had an outstanding experience tonight at Slaymaker & Nichols. We're visiting from the US and made a reservation at the bar (all that was available) before an evening show. We were seated at a high-top table in the bar area, which was perfect. The starters were delicious (lobster dip and avocado escabeche), the charcuterie board and butter board we got for our kids was superb, and our entrees (lobster bao and halibut) were stellar. My wife ordered the PB&J old fashioned with some trepidation, but it was shockingly good--flavorful without being overpowering, perfectly balanced, and complemented wonderfully by the jam cookie and peanut butter cookie that came with it. Our server Katherine went above and beyond, offering helpful suggestions for both the menu and the rest of our visit to PEI. The setting was welcoming but also classy, and the service was attentive and thoughtful. Highly recommended!

John K.

Yelp
Food was excellent, service was very good. Love their patio. Great experience. We'll go back for sure.

Yelp
Best bites in town. A great feast of beef on baguette au jus! Yummmmm. Amazing service. Wonderful decor. A no miss restaurant.
