Woodstock, Vermont is pretty stuffy. While the area is ripe with classic New England landscapes, small shops, and a devotion to all things local, it seems to attract a rather affluent crowd. And while there is nothing inherently wrong about living with privilege, it becomes difficult for other types of people to enjoy the beauty of the area with such high prices for lodging, dining, and other activities. However, this is not the case at Sleep Woodstock Motel, where you can enjoy nice, clean rooms just eight minutes from the center of town.
First things first, Sleep's price point is likely to be accessible for most vacationers. For only $113/night, we booked a standard room for Labor Day weekend. This is a far cry from the $350+ hotels and inn's found throughout the area. The motel sits across the street from a beautiful creek and up the road, about a mile, you'll find a covered bridge which allows access to the water. As stated above, if you're driving, it will take you exactly 8 minutes to travel from the motel to the center of town. Quechee Gorge is about a 20 minute drive and Silver Lake State Park is roughly the same.
The room that we occupied was well appointed in every way. It had a king size bed, mounted flat screen television, a small refrigerator, a microwave, and a collapsible desk. Also, in the land of charging for internet access, Sleep offers its guests free wifi. The bathroom was sizeable and very obviously recently renovated. The room was clean and there was plenty of storage for our weekend bags. Outside of each room, you'll find a patio table and two chairs, great for enjoying the stars in the evenings.
I have very few points of criticism for Sleep, but if I could offer any feedback it would be this: Please prohibit smoking directly outside of the rooms. We were situated next to two very heavy smokers and the odor and smoke were pronounced. This was especially so when we had our windows open, hoping to fill the room with clean Vermont air, but all we got was cigarette smoke. Perhaps designating an area farther away from the rooms for smoking would be the answer to this one.
Overall, I found Sleep Motel Woodstock to be a great value. It's clear the owner cares a great deal about this property and that it has become a labor of love to revitalize it. When I spoke to him at the conclusion of our stay, he noted that he was not attempting to present Sleep as anything more than it is, a roadside motel. I appreciate the integrity of that statement. In area where it would be easy to increase prices and decrease amenities, staying true to the spirit of the motel is a breath of fresh air.
