My first remark would be that this hotel is averaging 4.1 stars on Google Reviews, and 1.5 on Yelp. That's a huge discrepancy. Always be sure to check both before booking.
We stayed here recently on a weekend trip to the Sleepy Hollow area. First, the pros: the proximity is very good with respect to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (and Old Dutch Church, wooden Headless Horseman bridge), Washington Irving's cottage, a tasty local hibachi restaurant, the main st. area in general, etc. I do believe the hotel staff were trying their best, despite being understaffed for the weekend.
Now, the cons: firstly, the hotel smells really bad, from the time you enter the lobby, and all through the many hallways. I believe they have a big mildew problem (some mold is evident in certain areas on the ceilings), and certain wings are really pungent. Adding to this, they employ large scent diffusers which are constantly running to more or less mask the mildew smell (my guess), and as anyone knows who ever thought to use cologne or perfume to mask body odor, it's a really raunchy idea to mask one smell with another, especially when we're talking about a scent that is borderline nausea-inducing. I made a request to turn the scent cannon off attached to our hallway, and someone calling himself an "engineer" who didn't appear to understand me too well essentially could only say "no" when I asked if there was a way to turn it off. Of course, there was indeed a way since it was plugged into an outlet.
Our room featured a pullout couch with a broken frame and a mattress that was likely from the 70s or 80s. No complaints on the main bed in the room.
We tried the breakfast eatery one morning to discover they were forcing the buffet $$$ rather than ala carte, but they at least didn't charge for our young children. The eggs were very rubbery and flavorless. Bacon was ok. Not a ton of options and they didn't seem quite set up in the morning with all the necessary supplies. Again, I think the short-staffing played into this, but hey, that's on them for not staffing enough people if they were anticipating a busy weekend.
Overall, the smell was the biggest problem. Without it, this is an average 3 out of 5 stars. But with such bad odors wafting throughout, and likely in place to mask a larger systemic problem, it's a 2-star rating. Sorry guys. Wanted to love it, but you are falling short.
