"Sloth Sanctuary Even if you don't consider yourself an animal person, it's hard to resist the odd charm of the sloth, one of the most easily spotted mammals in Costa Rica. Easiest of all, though, is spotting them at this Cahuita sanctuary dedicated to their care. The founders stumbled into the rescue project when neighbors brought them a baby sloth whose mother had been killed by a car. That led to a vocation in sloth rescue and rehab and a full-fledged center that's open to the public for visits."

We absolutely loved this place! It was the highlight of our Costa Rica trip. The cost is well worth it; the hosts are experts in the flora and fauna as well as the sloths themselves. Plus we were all too happy to support their wonderful work and research. The resident sloths are adorable; leaving us wanting to cuddle each one. Ignatio guided us through the sanctuary and was a wealth of information! He certainly knows his stuff and will give you some extra time if you're interested in his passion for the flora and fauna, especially the many beautiful birds! The optional boat ride was amazing! Steven, our guide, was also super well informed on all the surroundings. He has a keen eye for lizards, birds, monkeys and the peaceful sloths hanging so high up in the trees. We were fortunate to see a rare sight: a wild sloth lower down in a tree, quite close to the creek. Wow! We couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thank you Ignatio and Steven!

The sloth sanctuary is one of the highlights on the Caribbean coast. The tours are a little bit expensive, but the money goes for a good cause. They also have rooms inside the sanctuary where you can stay, and if you arrive after they close, you need to tap lightly on the horn and they will open the gates. While there are many sloths and you get to get very close to them, you cannot hold them or touch them, as many people expect. It is not a petting zoo.

This is one of my absolute favorite places in Costa Rica. I love sloths, and I love how the sanctuary respects them and only takes in those that are not able to be released back into the wild. I have been in love with Costa Rica and its people from my very first trip. They care so much about the environment and their wildlife. The rest of the world could take some tips from the wonderful people of Costa Rica to protect our environment and the wildlife for generations to come

I had an amazing experience with my girlfriend! Would highly recommend the Insider’s Tour. You get to see the baby sloths and an optional tour down the river. I think we'll be back sometime in the future!

this place is a must see in costa rica. The weather was nice so we were invited to do a canoe ride for just $5 extra per person which was very nice we saw a sloth, monkeys, and even toucans! The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly as well. We really learned so much about these adorable creatures here

We had a great experience! The tour includes a 1 hour canoe ride with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. We were so fortunate to see a large pack of howler monkeys pass right by us. We also saw three sloths in the wild, thanks to the keen eye of our guide. Violin crabs, lizards, and beautiful trees. We experienced no mosquitos but the guide said some days are bad so bring bug spray. The second hour of the tour is spent up close with the sloths they have rehabilitated but that cannot live in the wild for various reasons. It's clear they take great care of the animals and are passionate about rehabilitating and returning those that can go back into nature to their natural habitats. Would definitely recommend for a great experience and a great cause to support. Police, firefighters, and community members bring injured sloths to this rehabilitation center, so it's an important resource.
