Beautiful space and thoughtful curation of the installation and performance

Google
One of my favorite places Dumbo. The gallery’s art exhibitions are always inspirational and thought-provoking.

Google
Yet another great "downtown-ish" art space that isn't actually downtown...unless you regard DUMBO as an extension of lower Manhattan. (Don't laugh...some people do.)

Google
Beautiful art gallery in DUMBO, featuring up-and-coming artists whose works tend towards mixed media, abstraction, and installation. The industrial feel of the space adds to the atmosphere, as do the views of the Manhattan Bridge. Admission is suggested at $5, and is via a donation box as you enter (no ticket booth at the entrance, but someone is on-hand to answer questions).

This art space has been in DUMBO before the condos. Innovative exhibitions of contemporary art. Great to drop in while you’re visiting the Brooklyn waterfront park. Reopened with limited timing, check website for current info.

Google
Beautiful art gallery and art program space we visited when it was the venue for a fundraising event for the artistic nonprofit A Blade of Grass. It’s spacious, has good lighting and tech and its location in DUMBO is within easy access of trains.

Google
Love this gallery. Mainstay of Dumbo, Ive never seen a show that didnt interest me. With its industrial feel, brick walls and amazing view, this is also a a perfect space for events.

Google
Not accessible entry, very cold studios, not the friendliest check in clerks, and exhibits are from meh, boring to ok.

Yelp
A great gallery space right on the Brooklyn waterfront and under the Manhattan Bridge. Smack Mellon offers interesting art shows as well as a studio residency program, an annual open call for artists, and educational programs for the public. Check out the space the next time you're in DUMBO.

Yelp
OK, I'll admit it; I think that Smack Mellon is a cool name. It is also a cool place to display art. The space is truly spacious, with huge windows. In addition to providing natural light, the windows provide a great view of the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn waterfront. It also helps that they show innovative and cutting-edge art. While the art will cost you, it is free to enter and enjoy the exhibits. It is a wonderful place to check out if you walking through DUMBO.

Yelp
We got married at Smack Mellon exactly ten years ago today (Sept 2nd 2006). Hurricane Ernesto was raging outside, but inside this beautiful facility everything was perfect and magical. As their pictures show the space is extremely unusual and specular, and the staff is awesome. Suzanne and Kathleen were professional, totally on top of things and completely committed to helping us put on a great event. We've had many people tell us over the years what a beautiful and memorable wedding we had (several mentioning it again today as we celebrate our 10th.) We thought it would be a good time to reiterate our thanks to Smack Mellon and HIGHLY Recommend it as a totally magical place to get married! BTW we also highly recommend their excellent gallery shows and studio tours, not to mention their Kentucky Derby Day Fund Raiser! We have not missed "Derby Day" at Smack Mellon since the event began and we look forward to it all year long. I guess you could say we are Smack Mellon fans :-)

Yelp
We had our wedding at Smack Mellon this Spring and could not have been more thrilled with how it turned out. From the very beginning, Suzanne and the staff were kind, helpful, and welcoming to us as we began the planning process. We also had the chance to make many visits while gallery shows were going on, and the exhibits were always top-notch. The most incredible part is the view - the floor to ceiling window frame with the entire span of the Manhattan bridge is really breathtaking. As the sun began to set during the cocktail hour, I was amazed at how the atmosphere became so warm and inviting. We are still getting compliments on choosing such a cool place for a wedding a month and a half later. If you're in the market for a wedding venue: this is a hidden gem, and so worth it. I highly highly recommend Smack Mellon.

Yelp
A great, bi-level, large art space. I came upon it during my DUMBO Arts Fest visit and it held one of the more intriguing exhibition.

Yelp
My husband and I got married at Smack Mellon in September of 2014. Suzanne was awesome to work with and very accommodating of our needs. It was a perfect and unique venue for a dinner wedding of approximately 40 people. We had a long table set up in between the two rows of columns with patio lights strung across the columns. The space had plenty of room for a cocktail hour, small ceremony and even a performance of dragon dancers. All of our guest were greatly impressed with the Dumbo neighborhood, the space as it transforms from day to night and the spectacular views of the Manhattan bridge. We would highly recommend Smack Mellon for anyone looking for a unique and different type of venue for their event!

Yelp
Smack Melon recently engaged in harassment and racial discrimination against one of their visitors. An artist harassed a guest saying he was making the environment uncomfortable after speaking with a artist he had met previous day and this was the time he had just walked into the building. One of the Hispanic workers there also harassed a guest, but was being friendly and goofing around with other guests in the galleries and hallways. A white photographer was spotted constantly following a black guest who was not causing a disturbance.

Yelp
Aside from being fun to say (go on, say it, SMACKMellon!), Smack Mellon hosts intriguing art shows and films. The space (how artsy does that sound?) is huge with large white and brick walls and a wood floor, a perfect canvas for an exhibit. It participates in 1st Thursday Gallery Walks, which means wine at least once a month.
