The 21 Best Dishes Eater LA Editors Ate in 2021, Mapped - Eater LA

"Don’t let the name fool: Heavy Handed isn’t just another ultra-smashed burger spot. This mostly Westside pop-up operation — known for its short rib patties and beef tallow fries — offers slightly thicker, extra-rich burgers that may technically belong in the smashed conversation, but are really much, much more. The duo of Danny Gordon (of Flatpoint Barbecue, another pop-up) and friend Max Miller have bopped around the city in 2021, moving from ongoing pop-up locations in Venice to one-off events at breweries, catered parties, and anywhere else they feel ike cooking. The word is out with fans who follow their weekly moves for those slightly seared, extra cheesy burgers. As always with Los Angeles, it is street food perseverance that keeps the people happy. Check Instagram for pop-up dates and locations. —Farley Elliott" - Eater Staff

Google
My first time ever visiting a Smashburger and it lived up to the hype. I put in a mobile order to go. It was made fast, and the employees were friendly (can be rare in L.A.). The place was very clean inside also. But most importantly the burgers were AMAZING. This was made fast but it isn't "fast food" quality. Its more like a sit down restaurant burger. It's ugly and juicy and "old school" style. Pure delicious. Oh the prices are amazing too. You could easily spend this much at a fast food joint and get way lower quality. The fries are amazing and compliment it perfectly. You gotta go here at least once.

Nice place to have some good burgers and craft beer. No restroom though A good patio seating. Burger tastes good

Google
Definitely a great burger. I got the bacon smashed at about 9:30 and on a Saturday night. It was perfect. I had to leave this review… at this time they had a 3.8 and that’s definitely not correct they’re definitely 4.5 +++ I would eat here again anytime any day! Definitely will not disappoint. Price is decent too. Great Value!

Watch the Superbowl at the restaurant. Great to see they are equipped with some TV here. However, the TVs inside might be too old fashioned without enough clarity. The newly designed TVs outside have no sound while it's really cold when staying outside at night after sunset without the necessary heaters. The food is just all right but somehow expensive. I have waited for a long time to have my salad and Sweet Potato fries. As the Cobb salad only has bacon without other protein costs $10.99 I chose to order another Grilled Chicken which cost $3.99 with only a small piece of Chicken Breast. Crazy... damn. However, the sweet potato fries are at a large amount. The staff are welcome here.

It was the 1st time visit to this store as waiting for a venue on Saturday. Placed and paid for an order at 6PM as there were some crowds eating their dinner before the venue at 7:30. Received a number holder for our order and placed on the table. At 6:25, I felt everyone else got their order. My wife went to the counter to ask about our order and was told that the order never went in. They realized there was a mistake and offered to prepare our order soon. However, it was too late to have a meal at that time. We requested a refund and they kindly deducted a fountain drink from the refund. It was not a good experience at all.

Google
Was there for the Clippers game and been wanting to try their burgers. Definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the single smashburger with tots. My buddy ordered sweet potato fries and garlic tots. Burger was flavorful and the fries/tots were all good. The garlic tots were the only item that was just, meh. Just a heads up, they don't have a public restroom.

Yesterday was my first experience with this establishment! First and foremost I have to give the cashier Jocelyn a special thank you!! She was ultimately the reason I placed my order, after finding out they did not sell turkey burgers. I was ready to leave until she enlighten me to the chicken burger, which I would highly recommend as she did for me. All said and done I can say I will be returning whenever I'm working in that area(she even hooked me up with an employee discount when she saw I was security). I look forward to seeing you in the near future Jocelyn keep up the great work

Yelp
Smashburger is a chain. This one is our favorite. Located at LA Live in Downtown LA it is filled with excitement and fun. Now, it is always crowded but the line moves fast and you will be fine. You order your food at the counter and eat there or on their patio. You can also get take away or delivery. We love to eat there before a show at Crypto Arena (their food is awful by the way) which is right down the street and part of LA Live. The prices are fair and they have a good selection. Parking is in a public lot for a fee, there is really no way to avoid that. The service is super friendly and they are pretty quick. They are especially patient considering I have never seen it without a line out the door. The place is very cute with nice seating inside and out. It is kept very clean. The selection is nice. We love all their burgers and they also have great fries. We often get one of their salads and they are always fresh and crisp. I love that they have milk and their hand made milk shacks are super. They have chicken burgers that may grandson loves. I like their crispy Brussel sprouts. Their sweet potato waffle fries are good are very good, but who am I kidding, they are not healthy, just get what you love and for me that is their French fries and tater tots. All of their food is good and you will be happy. Have a great time at LA Live and Smashburger.

Yelp
What a sneaky way to save money on food and drink before attending anything at Crypto.com arena! Was in LA Live a little early for an event and Jocelyn really hooked it up and made me feel like a regular! She made sure I knew about the $4 "add a beer" option to my burger order. On an event night, everyone's in jerseys and the vibe is buzzing ready to get you going for the game or concert you'll be seeing shortly! Definitely stopping by again - thanks Jocelyn!

Yelp
Wherever there is garlic I will roam. Lately I have been enjoying these garlic fries and with parmesean way to much. However for right now I will just indulge. After an event we headed over to Smash burger. We have been hearing a few things about it that we just decided to put an end to wondering to knowing and tasting. Let me say I'm not a fan of tater tots, well now they added garlic changed my whole outlook. Burgers were flavorful. Parking well whenever in DTLA you are aware of the challenges ,yet there is paid parking it has always worked out for me.

Yelp
Small portions, overpriced, poor service, and dirty tables. The ambiance could be better. I'll keep it short and sweet like the servers dialogue.

Yelp
First time in the joint at a different location than this address at LA Live. It was a good experience! Thanks I'll be back again soon... Yummy! LA Live might need some help with food preparation at their location... after reading some of the comments referenced on this website.

Yelp
Highly unorganized. We watched 3 people who ordered after us get their food before us. And we only ordered a side of fries!! We ordered at 7:32pm. It's 7:48pm and we still haven't received our order of fries! So much for trying to get a quick bite before a concert.

Yelp
Never has a smashburger, but I had to try. The price is a little steep since I am from the Midwest, and burgers are under $10. Here they are $17.99, so that's a little steep, but oh well, let's try it. It's a burger, and although seasoned well, it's not anything I would go out of my way to find. Literally, it's a burger and nothing spectacular. Is that bad to see since so many love their smashburger? Well, I can't conform. It's not all that. Service was pretty good as they greeted me right away, and we're kind, so I am happy about that. Although their soda fountain didn't have the correct colas. Sprite was empty, and once you pushed the ice, you better be prepared as it flys off the machine! The whole spot for ambiance was good, not the biggest restaurant, but it did accommodate a few. Personally, I wouldn't try again, but it's not a bad burger, just too expensive.

Yelp
I'll do this in order of what Yelp asks. 1) I only ordered tater tots and they were good, not great. Not as crispy as they should have been. My friend had a mushroom burger and she described it the same, good but not great. What bothered me a ton was that, as written by another reviewer, was that their menu boards weren't working. Which is why I only ordered the tots. My friend heard someone in front of us order the mushroom burger and that's why she ordered it. 2) The young man that brought our food to our table was working his butt off and did it with a smile! 3) I'm not sure what to say about "ambiance". It wasn't very busy but it felt chaotic.

Yelp
If I could give no stars I would. I came in and ordered a vegetarian/vegan option. They gave me a regular burger. After a bite I was on the toilet for hours. As a vegetarian of 22 years this place is trash. I was fine at first but days later I'm quite upset. They should have a better staff. This is unacceptable.
google avatar

Yelp
I would recommend avoiding this location if you're looking to grab a quick bite before heading to the Crypto.com Arena for an event. I've had Smashburger before and found it decent, but this location was disappointing. First, half of the menu board was down, so it was difficult to see the burger options. Although there was a breakdown sheet of the burger contents, it didn't help much. I ordered the basic Smashburger, expecting it to be good, but I was mistaken. When the food arrived, it looked fine, but the first bite revealed that the patty was extremely salty and greasy. For $12, it was a letdown. My friends ordered the truffle mushroom burger and another burger combo. The truffle mushroom patty wasn't cooked all the way, and one of my friends discovered this halfway through her burger. The fries were drenched in oil and visibly greasy, to the point where we didn't even try them. Overall, it was a poor experience, and I'd recommend avoiding this location if possible.

Yelp
Nestled in the vibrant LA Live, this Smashburger offers a lively dining atmosphere that certainly sets the stage for a decent meal. Staff were super friendly and helpful. While the fries and tots are undeniably fresh and crispy, the burgers themselves could benefit from a bit more pizzazz. Ultimately, the true draw of this location is its energetic surroundings, making it a great spot to grab a bite before or after an event.

Yelp
Said they were open till 11:30 but the lady said they were closed by 10:30. Fix your google hours.... Or maybe yall just lazy
google avatar

Yelp
For whatever reason, most of the food spots within easy walking distance of the convention center were closed this Tuesday. Smash burger, however, was open. This combo (drink not pictured) was $18 plus tax. It was "ok", but not memorable in any way. Price was probably more than it should be because of location. In n out is way better at half the price.

Yelp
I got smashed... with food of course! I wanted something quick before the Laker game at Crypto Arena, so I stumbled upon Smashburger. It looked very crowded but the service and the time it took to get our food was surprisingly quick. This was my first time at a Smashburger and overall give it a 4.5 but will round it out to a Yelp 5 The burger was good and kinda of tasted like a cross of McDonald's and In And Out. It was good and solid. The fries were also good as well. Now the tater tots... they were absolutely amazing! Service with a smile here and the vibe / ambiance was very laid back. This location was clean and bright as well. Overall it was a solid meal!

Yelp
Food: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Ambiance: 8/10 We were in the area enjoying a Sparks game and stopped by Smashburger for a bite before the game. It was a Tuesday evening, around 6:30 pm, so we didn't have to wait in a long line to order. So, the food is good. Given it's location, it's pricey for a burger but it's good. We ordered a double-double smashburger, a grilled chicken, and a cheese burger. We also ordered regular fries, sweet potato fries, and tater tots, which were a winner! They're seasoned with rosemary and something else. Given how empty it was, the staff was very helpful (and patient while we ordered) and our food was out within 15 minutes. I'm not sure why the menu is only posted on the wall- it would be helpful for accessibility reasons, I'd they could have menus at each of the POSs. It gets overwhelming to be looking up and trying to figure out what to order. Overall, it's a great place to grab a bite before going to the Crypto or LA Live for an event.

Yelp
After having some issues and they got back with me right away and corrected the issue and I appreciate that I didn't think I would ever hear anything about it and was shocked when they got back to me within 48 hours. Great customer service and I'm happy customer again, this is a great spot for a quick bite during Laker games and other events at LA Live. I genuinely appreciate the good customer service and getting back to me the owner was not aware of many of the issues and was super nice and interested in hearing what I had to say great customer service and a yummy product that is consistently delicious and also one of the most affordable food venues at LA Live and they have margaritas and beer also so you can tailgate right on the patio and literally people watch some of the most interesting stuff in Los Angeles to see here and the Kobe statue is visible from the patio. Very cool.

Yelp
Just terrible all around. Dirty tables, 30 minute wait, cold fries, cold chicken nuggets, cold fries, zero dressing on salad, greasy burger. Bargain price for this mess- $50. Do not recommend. ~EG eats

Yelp
This place is trash. Way overpriced even though it's in the downtown media center. Nobody wants to pay $26 for a bunch of Frozen crap. My french fries were way too salty and frozen and w****. My chicken burger tasted like it had freezer burn and a ton of salt on. They kept bringing us the wrong orders then they were to redistribute the orders to other people after my friends touch the orders. The burgers don't have anything I like on just a bunch of nasty mayonnaise. This place should go out of business
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
I came here before going to see a concert at the novo. There was no wait which was nice and plenty of seating. I got the cheeseburger and fries and they were very tasty. The fries were hot and the burger had great flavor. The service was fast but I was sad there was no ice in the soda machine. I did however enjoy that they had Coke Zero. The food is expensive for what it is but that makes sense because of the location. If I came back for an event and needed a quick bite I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Ordered tator tots. These have got to be one of the greasiest I've seen. There was oil pooled at the bottom of the container. The tots were lukewarm yet drenched in oil, what gives..seems like they gave me previously fried tots that they simply dumped in the fryer for a second, with the fryer not being hot enough for frying. Beware

Yelp
I was looking forward to this after traveling all morning...it was not at all like the other smash burgers I've been to. The service was sub par. I stood there for almost 3 minutes before i was greeted. The cook saw me standing there. We made eye contact. Nothing. I looked over to the left and saw another employee standing there on her phone. This smash was not off to a good start. I ordered a double smash combo with smash fries. It took around 15 minutes for my order to be ready. Though it is very photogenic, the food was not tasty at all. The burger was a meatloaf puck full of grease. No thanks. The fries were okay but nothing to write home about. The combo meal also came with a drink, and it cost $22. There's also no bathroom to wash off after getting messy eating, but at least they were nice enough to let me wash my hands in the small sink behind the counter. I will not be going back there.

Yelp
Food came out fast and tested great ! Service was also on point even with a rush of people. I personally want to thank Royal for providing such service !
google avatar

Eric V.

Yelp
The burgers here are way overpriced for what you get. I paid $20 for a single burger, and the quality just doesn't match the price. Definitely not worth it.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Will never order from here again!!! Ordered via DoorDash a bacon avocado cheeseburger. Once again a bacon avocado cheeseburger...that is pretty self explanatory. Yet when my order arrived NO BACON on my burger. Paid for a bacon cheeseburger but didn't get what I paid for. How do you mess up a simple order. Will definitely NEVER be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Ron W.

Yelp
Came here for a quick bite before a work training downtown . Service was fast as usual and my employee discount was applied without any issues ! They made my burger WELL DONE as requested - Bravo !
google avatar

Yelp
Food:D, We ordered 2 Vegan Burgers but they where prepared with cheese, so after returning the Burgers we were served 2 new Vegan burgers but after a few bites we shockingly concluded that they were made with Beef patties (this was confirmed by the cashier). When we finally got to the Clipper game we had to leave early because our digestive system couldn't handle the meat after 10 years, so we left nauseous and missed 3/4 of the game. Service: D, The next day we contacted the restaurant and they offered to refund us for the inconvenience and they told us that the purchase was credited but the credit was never issued We called Corporate office, but they never responded. Cleanliness: A, Dining area and outside patio were clean, No bathroom on premises. Ambiance: B, not impressive.
google avatar

Leilani M.

Yelp
Definitely a hyped up place and ideal location for lots of customers to enjoy the area. My favorite part was the rosemary tots. The burger was decent.. but I would go back for the tots. Just didn't enjoy the bottom of the tot cup filled with oil. Overall a good experience because we enjoyed a show at the crypto arena prior. We didn't want to leave the area but maybe next time we'll venture a little further for something different. Service was friendly and it was pretty packed so we thought the wait for our food was going to be long but it actually came out pretty fast. It's a popular place and has that buzz. I would go back for seconds.

Emilly ..

Yelp
Came to eat here $27 for a burger. Meat was so salty. Paid +$2 for 2 tiny bacon strips. Ridiculous! Huge downgrade. They got rid of the sweet potato fries and turkey patties.
google avatar

Rudy H.

Yelp
Location is why you'll want to eat here. Located in center of L.A. Live adjacent to the Crypto Center and The Novo. If there's event going on at the Crypto expect a long line to order your food. For what ever reason the line moves very slowly. The hamburger was good. The lettuce and tomato were extra fresh. I recommend getting the double meat burger since the beef pattie's are on small side. They smash the burger. French fries are better than most. Ketchup is served in packets. There's patio seating. Very nice spot to people watch. My chief complaint is pricing. Expect to pay over $20 for a hamburger with fries and a drink.

Elvia C.

Yelp
Went w/my daughter had lunch. Food was good and service was great. Joselin and Lauren very attentive. Great customer service. Will come back.
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
Arrived a couple hours before an event a Crypto.com arena. There were 3 parties ahead of us but only one cashier and one cook. Our order took over 30 minutes (from the time we ordered) to get our food. The burger is small and flavorless, the fries were cold, and a couple of the fountain drinks lacked carbonation. I was about to let the worker know but unfortunately their line was so long, they wouldn't be able to switch out the carbonation anyway. $20 (after tax) for a burger combo....nope, never again.

Chantel S.

Yelp
Came on 2/7/24 around 3pm it wasn't busy soon as I ordered the line never died down I was here for an hour! When I got here they informed me that the ice machine didn't have ice, give them 5-10 mins! The coke was also out 1 hour later still no ice and no coke! They had 1 person working the cash register. They had one person running food. Which she was also responsible for, filling the ice machine, and redoing the sodas! The food came out pretty quick, but I wasn't satisfied with the taste of the food. It was very bland. The french fries were good. They were hot, but the burger was cold. For this place to be as busy as it is they need more servers and be more tentative to the customers. I feel bad for the one girl because she's doing everything all by herself. I will not be back here and I will not recommend this place to anyone. For the $64.00 I spent on 3 meals it NOT worth it at all! The ambience was whatever!! Too many kids it might have been a field trip! Plus some kid kept blowing his nose and coughing ! Turned my stomach big time
google avatar

Jenny K.

Yelp
We tried this burger place for the first time and will not be back. Limited menu/offereings. No one was at the front taking orders although a few employees walked by and then went to the back so it took about 5 minutes for someone to come take the order. There were only a few other people eating there but every single table inside was dirty. EVERY SINGLE ONE. We found a half of a table that looked like it hadn't been used so sat there since outside smelled like weed. We both ordered combos. Fries were maybe lukewarm (that's being generous) and soggy. Burger was tasty but truly looked thrown together...like a fast food burger I could get for a lot cheaper. The entire time we were in there not one single table was cleaned. I found myself wondering how clean the kitchen and prep areas were kept and lost my appetite. I did not finish my burger or fries. Definitely cannot recommend this place.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
My brother and I stopped by Smashburger since we were in the area for the LA auto-show. I had heard of this place before and wanted to give it a try. Peering at the menu, once inside, I had to adjust my eyes a few times to make sure I was looking at the menu prices correctly. $19 and some change for a combo meal???!!! Inflation is a bitch but this is ridiculous. I proceeded to order hoping the meal loved up to the price tag. Lo and behold, I received a relatively small double burger (compared to in-n-out) and a measly small portion of fries. Flavor was subpar. The burger was a step above a McDonald's double cheeseburger if it were made with fresher ingredients. The fries were crispy but lacked flavor. 2 stars for friendly staff.
google avatar

Dallas A.

Yelp
Visited this Smashburger before a Clippers game and I expected to wait a while for my food because the restaurant was pretty busy. Not a lot to the Smashburger menu: it's burgers and chicken sandwiches (veggie burger options available), with a couple of sides you can order as well. Despite the crowd there, our orders came out within 10 minutes, which was a nice surprise. The food was solid, and the outdoor patio area is a great spot for dinner when the weather is nice.
google avatar

Christopher N.

Yelp
First time here and order classic smash burger combo. The food is really good and the server named Royal is very helpful and responsive.

Yelp
Work across the street and caught my eye. Great food and great service! Great beer and best prices too! Thank you Andrea!

Yelp
The burgers definitely don't look like the picture. Ours came out a little sad looking. Definitely not worth the price but still hit the spot. The meat and the flavor was good, but don't come here thinking "I'm gonna fill up cheap before going into Crypto Center". Double Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger (4): The flavor was there. The meat was good. Truffle was pronounced. The mushrooms went well with the whole ensemble. The bun was smooshed and lacking. Great flavor profile though. Just wished it didn't resemble a fast food burger when it cost $15. Double BBQ Bacon Cheddar Burger (3): Another awesome concept. And again, the flavor was there but the execution was just poor. Honestly if you're gonna charge this much for a burger, the expectations are gonna be much higher than a fast food burger. The ingredients tasted good, but just really thrown together and smallish. If you're really craving a burger, this place has them and they're okay. Ingredients are decent but its priced as a gourmet burger when you should expect fast food burger. One big positive is they have beer on draft! But of course so does every other place in this area.

Yelp
Brian helped me out ! Great service. He's the shot. The man. The best. Love this place
google avatar

Dennis L.

Yelp
There are very few places where I have ate and totally regretted. This is one of them. I checked them out yesterday before a Clippers game for a quick lunch. Ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and chicken tenders. To make them a combo is an extra $10 each. Yikes! Prices are on the higher side here. I get it and I don't mind if the food is good. Portions: Fail. Tenders are on the small side. Chicken sandwich had the flattest piece of chicken I have ever seen on a chicken sandwich. You could barely see it in the sandwich. Quality: I wouldn't mind the portions or the price if the food is good. Not here. Chicken sandwich had no flavor. It tasted like paper. Did I catch them on an off day? I don't know. This was my 1st time here and I expected better.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
I guess i was expecting more. It was at best ok. We actually came during, a rush of people getting out of a show or right before they go to one. So it was extremely packed. Long waits for ok food. Burgers were ok. Not really what i was expecting for the price. Everything is a al carte as well. The people working there were trying there best, but during this window and flood of people they were just overwelmed im sure. Most of the soft drinks were out of syrup and ice machine had no ice. Bad for large groups. 4 or less would be ideal. I did notice like an hour later, the people inside dwindled down drastically.

Yelp
Great place to come during the workday. Friendly service, good deals for employees who work in the plaza. Andrea was great today - very friendly!

Yelp
Had a burger with my friends after the lakers game and it didn't disappoint. I loved the burger and my friend said they loved their tater tots
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
First thing I want to say is the crew itself is 5 stars alone!!! Everyone was so friendly and had a big smile on their face! Nowadays you can definitely appreciate that so much. The food not only looked so delicious but the experience you get from taking the first bite of the fresh and hot burger is just impeccable and made you just want more! My compliments to the chef!!! I loved the fact that you can just go in and sit a catch a game and relax while enjoying a nice hot meal. Special shout out to Joselin and Chrystal for making my friend and myselfs experience there today top notch! Will definitely recommend to everyone!

Ty T.

Yelp
Customer service was there ambience it's in downtown right across from the staple center. There's a view of the buildings and the stairs. They may be a game tonight I don't know and don't care. The feedback is life is only gonna get a customer ones but no returns. Burger was soggy and it was $10 for a burger smaller than my hand off and depending on your size you won't be fulfilled. We will not be returning. Your paying $10 or $20 for the dressings of the burger.

Yelp
Great Service! The french fries are the bomb! Best space in LA Live. Andrea was awesome

Yelp
There is a lovely new employee by the name of Jasslyn who provided me with the best customer service and I have been going through o this location for over 2 years! Please keep more employees like Jasslyn it makes us feel great as customers! She also brought my food to my seat! thanks much
