This was my first solo trip abroad and I mainly booked this hotel as it was good for my budget. I expected a simple guesthouse and that is what I got. The atmosphere is calm and serene and I really loved the wooden deck where I could sit alone, surf the net, read and grab a bite. The rooms are re-creations of old houses so there are "no walls" only panels of slotted wood. It felt adventurous to sleep in them. If you are someone who wants good security or is a light sleeper or wants great comforts I wont recommend this place. I wanted to sleep in after arriving here and couldnt do it as my neighbors kept talking. The A/c barely worked, there was no lift and no food is available. I understand that the bathroom is not great or modern by European standards but being used to stone floors in India I dint find it odd. The hotel is a safe place, the manager was friendly (he let me make free calls to local tour operators) and there is a good bakery just up ahead for breakfast. But the Tuktuk drivers cant find this place easily so get down at Suriyawong road intersection and walk.

I have stayed one week in smile house boutique and loved the place: close from Chang Mai center but in a very quiet street. The staff is really friendly and helpful. The first days I was in a room situated behind the building, and it was a little loud in the night because of a electricity generator, so I asked to change room to have one on the other side, in front of the house, and it was perfect. The terrace upstairs was a wonderful place to chill and meet people.

The location is great! Just outside of Chiang Mai Gate! You can walk to many restaurants and markets. The night bazar is a 30 minutes walk or a 10 min. tuktuk-drive.||The rooms are clean BUT the wall are only thin wooden walls! (See photo) You can hear EVERYTHING. Snoring, chatting and TV from the other guests through the whole night. In the morning (before 8) its also very loud because the breakfast area is directly under the rooms. Even my earplugs didn't help.||Due to the many holes in the wood walls there are many geckos (even in the room) and many ants! If you don't mind at least 15 ants in your bed one night, its fine.||The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The positives: Great location with walking distance of all the fun things to do in Chiang mai. Nice pool that stays cool throughout the day. Massage place for 200bht 10m away.||||The negatives: Wifi did not work during our stay. No AC. Thin walls. They charge for instant coffee. ||||It was fine for us for 3 very hot nights, but I would book somewhere else next time.

Good for a reasonable budget and very lovely!|||| It's far enough outside to be silent at night, even in Songkran! But it still only a few minutes from restaurants, bars and street food! ||||As far as I'm concerned it's a perfect place to chill out, there's plenty of comfortable seating on the decks outside the rooms, good Wi-Fi and the wooden panel walls keep the air con in as well as give the place a different and cute look! ||||Friendly and helpful staff, couldn't ask for much more!

I stayed at Smile House Boutique as part of a tour with Tucan travel, so cannot comment about value for money (however now knowing the prices they charge I would say good value for money).||Rooms are spacious and bathroom is well set out. The Boutique itself is very quaint; giving a feeling of being somewhat secluded in such a chaotic town. However, the beds are not comfortable and the walls are paper thin.

Service was fine. They allowed us to check in early, which was nice. Rooms were clean but the bed was OLD and SUNKEN and the walls were so thin I could hear a child screaming outside for about an hour. The guest next to me could hear everything I did and said and I could hear that she was getting pissed off. Overall I would not go back. If they remodeled and did some structural changes to the walls as well as bought new beds then I would go back.

There are two smile houses. one is a boutique hotel. Make sure to emphasize that if you are in a tuktuk. The hotel was decent for the price. I only had to complain. One was that the wifi was horrible. Two is that the hot water heater was difficult to work. I didnt figure it out until my last day there. Oh and there was construction happening next door when I stayed there. So there was no sleeping in for me. The location was GREAT!!! Its right outside the saturday and right across the street from nightly food stands. Airport is 15min away.
