Stayed here 4 nights while on a 3 week trip through Thailand. Started out paying 800 baht on our simple double bed AC room. No bells and whistles whatsoever, poor shower and sink drainage. The pool and common areas were lovely however. After talking to other guests we found out there where variations on the simple "double bed AC room" and they were actually paying less for what seemed to be nicer rooms. We talked with the staff (different person than checkin) and they were kind enough to switch our room for the remainder of our stay and lower our price. I recommend looking at a few rooms and try to haggle a bit on the price if you can.

The room was ok, clean and calm. Bed nice. We had a double room with a window on the swiming pool so could not open the curtain at all to preserve privacy... Staff smily and great location in old Chiang Mai.|For the price of 600 bt if you dont care of the swiming pool you can find better. If you want one, this is the right place.

Hotel is definitely not the best: not really clean (forgot to clean our bathroom), no isolation, swimming pool is freezing, bed are old and not comfortable! But the service is good, they cleaning our bathroom directly when we told them out problem, and it is pretty cheap. They are also animal friendly and you can see cats and dog walking in the lobby and I loved this! You felt like home ! If you book this hotel you know that comfort will be minimal but general atmosphere good and friendly.

Swimming pool and main building are very good, and location is awesome. My room and linen were clean , a/c worked OK. The shared bathroom draining system could be better, they were always wet. And since wearing shoes is not allowed inside, I always felt uncomfortable to shower. Great backpacker atmosphere, very good wifi.

I booked this place last minute for one night. I rode past it on a bicycle a day earlier and thought it had charm from the street. I really wanted to be able to disagree with most other reviews and find more charm in this place, but after a near sleepless night on a rock hard bed, I just cannot. I am all for a firm mattress, but dear God, this was brick-like firm. I'm not sure it can even qualify as a mattress. It is more of a torture vehicle. I will say that the sheets and towels were clean, and the staff were helpful. The greenery around the place and the pool are picturesque. The room was a good size, and the air conditioner worked great. The shower had good pressure and hot water. I loved the location. The place needs repair; the deck boards are loose and hazardous, the bedroom walls were cracked, the bathroom needed one heck of a cleaning, as did the floor, and the wifi was okay, not awesome. If you book this place, I hope you are traveling with a foam mattress pad.

Before we arrived we had no time to search for guest houses online. We only had our lonely planet to read during the bus journey. The Smile House was mentioned and regarding location and the review it seemed nice. We arrived there in the evening and it was raining so bad that we took the room, even though the room was the emptiest and least friendly room we stayed in so far in Thailand.||||It was also the second guest house ever I left after one night - not for travelling to another place but because of the guest house. The AC room was downstairs kind of next to the swimming pool. As it is also near to the reception you still have wifi in the room, but also all the noise of the guests in the "lobby".||||The room itself is without any love, really empty and with 700 Baht for north Thailand/Chiang Mai not even one of the cheap ones: We had a lot of guest house for a lower price which had nicer rooms. Also the toilet and sink in the bathroom was not working probably.||||I would recommend basically any other guest house around the area (which is really a nice location). Most of them a cheaper and at least the ones we visit the next morning (without rain to stop us) had all nicer rooms.

The location is amazing but the rest of it is a bit lacking. The staff can barely speak English but Google translate helped me with the trickier things. They don't have amenities like stoppers for the sink drain or somewhere to hang your clothes. The rooms are moist and dank. The bathrooms are pretty gross. But they have the best hot water heater I've used yet in Thailand. Don't pay more than 500/night here.

Overall this is a pretty good place if you're looking for something in the medium range. We got an air conditioned room for 700/night, with private bathroom and of course access to the pool, which makes this place stand out a little from the places around it. The area is good, quiet at night (pool closes at 21:00) but it's close to lots of bars and restaurants (check out 29 Cafe across the street, their fruit shakes are cheap and very good). Wifi is free if you stay there, much like many other places around. The rooms are ok, and the showers leave a good bit to be desired. Same room as the toilet with no curtain (it will be wet when you're done) and the mouthpieces are not so good. But the pool does make up for it when you just want to cool off. Overall worth a visit.
