"On Smith Island I sampled the original Smith Island cake from Smith Island Bakery—the multi‑layered yellow cake with fudge‑like frosting that’s become Maryland’s official dessert and can even be shipped nationwide." - Arati Menon, Megan Spurrell

Can’t stop thinking about how delicious that Smith Island cake was! Tried the traditional chocolate fudge and a slice of coconut and both were excellent, hope to make it back soon! The shop had lots of cute local crafts too but oh man great cake

Could not resist ordering a cake from the Smith Island Bakery after watching a segment on Smith Island MD on TV! I ordered the Chocolate Strawbery Cake! Delicious and decadent! No better way to support Smith Island residents and the watermen if you can't visit the island in person! The island's residents are an integral part of the history of Chesapeake Bay. Celebrate them by including one of these celebrated cakes in your next festivities!

First time trying a Smith Island cake and it will definitely not be the last! Can't wait to try other flavors.

For our wedding, we wanted to add a Maryland touch and also give tribute to my husbands family connection to smith island, so we decided to do a smith island cake bar of 7 different flavors of cake. The cakes were INCREDIBLE and we got so many compliments on the different flavors. The owners were awesome to work with, and helped coordinate options for pickup off the ferry for us. I would highly recommend this company time and time again, and supporting this bakery (with local smith island workers) over the larger bakery in Krisfield any day.

Took my boat to smith island from Heathsville, Va. All the people on the island were super friendly. The baking company is super cozy and personal. Talked to one of the owners for about an hour about the island he lives on. Great guy and a first responder. Was fascinated about the story of the feral goats across the channel. Took three yellow/chocolate cakes back home to Va to share with friends. Frozen cakes made the trip over the bay in some small chop just fine. All my friends raved about the cakes flavor. My daughter and wife could not get enough. Will be back for lunch and to bring home some more cake next summer.

We stopped here in the morning and had the pineapple cake, the peanut butter cake, and the strawberry chocolate cake. All were fresh and yummy. But even more is that is likey the largest gift shop on the island. This is not to me missed on a island visit.

I just saw your shop on Peter's YouTube video , I'd love to try the smith island chocolate cake 🍰 but I live in Sydney 🦘 . One day I'll fly over there to try it 😁

The cake arrived so fresh & moist . This is my second cake I have ordered and they are great. If you want the real authentic Smith Island cake then you are at the right place. Well worth the delivery fee to get one of these sent to me across the country. Can’t wait to visit on my next east coast trip. Thank you Smith Island Bakery!!!

Yelp
The cake is what they're known for on this island. While the number of layers varies, I ended up with an eight layer German chocolate cake. It was absurdly decadent. I was surprised at the number of flavors, but of course there's no reason you can't use this basic style of cake with any number of ingredients. This place notably offered a gluten-free slice for a bit more, and cold beverages. Signage on the outside seemed to indicate the building might be for sale. There are a few places to get a cake on this island, but on my visit I felt this the right choice.

Yelp
I came straight to Smith Island Bakery to try their delicious cakes and they did not disappoint! They have a variety of flavors but be sure to go early as they will sell out later in the day.

Yelp
This is a pretty large spaces. Calling it a gift shop is very generous. It's scattered with piddly crap akin to the junk shelves at good will, with maybe a vaguely interesting thing here or there. The cake was such a disappointment. Hard, flavorless. Got the original and the coconut and they went into the trash after a bite or two. Not to mention the oodles of plastic they use for packaging which will definitely wind up in the ocean. Kinda weird to disregard their ocean-environmental impact being residents of an island, huh? Blows my mind what keeps this place running.

Yelp
We were checking out all the different options of Smith Island cake and had to visit the one bakery actually located on the island. It was a gift store with the sales of the cake at the register in the back. There are many flavors available frozen in half or full sizes, and slices available to eat on the spot. If you are looking for a particular flavor you may want to go as soon as you arrive as once they're out of a certain flavor of slice, it's gone for the day!

Yelp
Bottom Line: Cakes, crafts and camping offered on Smith Island by friendly people. I'm so glad we dropped in Smith Island Bakery during our walking tour of Ewell. As the name implies the have baked goods and specifically Smith Island cakes. When we visited I think they had someone in the neighborhood of 17 flavors, some of which are seasonal. You can get a slice of cake, a half cake or a whole cake. They even ship cakes within the United States. As much as I love dessert and Smith Island cakes I also love shopping and this bakery has a nice sized gift shop selling items made in the Chesapeake Bay region. I bought a Christmas ornament that is a crab shell painted with a crab holding a Smith Island cake. I can't imagine a more perfect ornament to remember my voyage to Smith Island. Smith Island Bakery also sells cold drinks and coffee and I found this to be a convenient place to get a cold beverage on a warm summer day. But wait there is more, much to my surprise Smith Island Bakery also has docking and a camping. You can tent camp on their property which has access to a Boat House including a full bathroom. I wish I had explored that a little bit more during my visit. Like everyone we encountered on Smith Island the employees were very friendly.

Yelp
Wow! Oh wheee! Wow! This cake is good! Try all the favors. We were lucky enough to get a sampler! It should be illegal it is so good! Loved the lemon, coconut, and strawberry flavors, with the light fluffy frosting. The grumpy old man pit barbecue trailer, that's the name of it, I'm not making a judgement, out front is good too. I had the beef pit roasted sandwich on a Kaiser with barbecue sauce. Had a ton of fresh lean meat on it. Potato chips are good, too in the store and it has all sorts of interesting groceries in it, like okra chips and tons of other things you might not be able to get anywhere else. There was a multi ethnic crowd in there so it has groceries that would appeal to cooks from many different places. The cashier who waited on me was really nice and opened the register when she saw I had been waiting for the customer ahead of me to finish up. I'm really surprised the yelpers haven't found this place - it's a gem and the cakes are to die for. You can get them frozen, too, if you have a long drive. They taste like the most delicious, expensive wedding cake you've ever tasted, stacked tall, with multiple layers and moist, not all dried out.
