On the Grid : Smith Street Bazaar

"Smith Street Bazaar is a vintage store filled with mid-century and retro furniture, homewares and objects. The size of the shop front is deceiving — the store extends deep into the building to house a collection of objects that have been globally sourced and lovingly restored. From small decorative items to large pieces of furniture, Smith Street Bazaar is full of vintage gems." - Vertigo

As a customer seeking both quality service and genuine craftsmanship, my recent experience at Smith Street Bazaar left much to be desired. From the moment of entry, the atmosphere was marred by an air of elitism, as the staff exhibited a demeanour of superiority. This attitude suggested their presence within the establishment transcended the bare minimum of customer service. I'd give 0 stars if I could!

Good selection of mid-century and Scandinavian design pieces.

Bought 2 stunning danish inspired bedside tables from Henry, he not only delivered them straight away but gave me a small discount and was the most pleasant person ever- a true artisan of his craft been doing it years. That plus the hilarious man on the checkout who is as bad at maths as I am- all in all a lovely experience from this long standing Melbourne institution!!! Bravo!

Smith St Bazaar, by far has some of the greatest lighting on offer in Melbourne - I always look forward to stopping by when I am in the area to see what exciting new items are on display - 10/10 highly recommend!

Buyer beware. Do NOT buy anything here. Multiple items are fraudulently labeled - I bought a table here labeled “Thonet table” but which was just a repurposed Aussie bistro table. I returned to spot several other fakes on the floor. I’d be okay with a retro store labeling things “in the style of” but this place is lying outright about brands, provenance and authenticity while selling at extravagant premium prices. Customer service was also terrible with the sort of weird lies and ever shifting stories you’d expect from someone selling off the back of a truck. Anything you can find here you will find on Pamono or 1st Dibs - both places the antiques are more likely to be authentic - and cheaper - and if anything goes wrong you will get a refund. Do yourself a favour, walk out and use the power of google to find the same item elsewhere. You will thank me when you avoid getting scammed.

Staff are always unfriendly for a place that sells mostly old stuff no one really wants. Everytime I go in it has the same stuff it had last time

This place has fantastic stuff from an interesting range of dealers. Sets a high standard in quality. The staff could be more friendly and helpful though.

Yelp
Love love love! This shop boasts a fantastic range of mid-century home wares and furniture. From bottle openers and knick-knacks from $15, all the way through to furntiure such as dining tables over the $1,000 mark, this store really has something for anyone who has an eye for retro design. I went home with a gorgeous blue glass bowl for $35.

Yelp
What a gorgeous shop front. Those windows! And that's just the exterior. Inside, it's even better. The ground floor is full of mint condition mid-20th-century furniture. Beautiful pieces of furniture in such good nick can demand a high price and they do. Knowing I can't afford much on this floor, I usually cast a quick glance over the goods just as a treat to my eyes, and then head up the stairs to the vintage clothes. I'm always pleasantly surprised by the prices here. For this location on Smith Street, the stall holders could really ask for more for their vintage finds, but they don't, and I for one, am not only grateful, but feel vindicated for being annoyed at retailers for upping the price tag just because they can. This is how it should be done. Beautiful store filled with earthly delights for all the enjoy (and possess).

Yelp
A treasure trove of antiques and vintage furniture, if you wanted the decor of Mad Men all you need to do is visit the Smith Street Bazaar. Beautiful tables, sleek chairs and intricate sideboards are scattered throughout the enormous store. There are also some fantastic lamps, tea sets and vases, that look as thought they belong in your grandparents houses in the 1950s and 1940s. Up towards the back is a modest clothing section that has a great range of shoes, bags and accessories too (90s backpacks are back in people!). They also have an impressive range of costume jewellery. It isn't surprising that the Smith Street Bazaar always has some devoted retro fans or artists crawling through and marveling at the woodwork or kitsch posters. Last week I was very tempted by a slick wooden chair that was low, sexy, and remarkably modern, but with a price of $700 (quite reasonable for a quality piece but a mere dream to a student), I unfortunately had to kiss that beautiful piece of work goodbye. One day when I have an income and a house, I'll buy some furniture from the Smith Street Bazaar. But until then, it's always a pleasure to just look.

Yelp
Smith Street Bazaar manages to make me feel happy and sad at the same time. Happy that a place like this exists, and sad that I can't afford anything. Bazaar houses pretty much everything; giant pop-art posters, furniture, even old jukeboxes and records - all with big price tags, but all understandably worth it. However my favourite section is of course where the clothes live which I find are priced much more cheaply. Somehow I have been lucky enough to pick up an authentic Betsey Johnson dress for a mere $60 (its original price tag would have been in the hundreds.) Even the store owner said "You know how good a deal this is?!" So vintage clothing lovers, listen up! Smith Street Bazaar only has the 'good stuff', you won't have to trudge through racks of 90's adidas jackets or hideous old bridesmaids dresses. There is only quality on these racks. A guilty pleasure of mine is to pop in to Smith Street Bazaar every few weeks, check out all the new stock and make a secret list of all the things I want to buy once I've won the lottery.

Yelp
Smith Street Bazaar makes me want to sell my soul to the corporate devil just so that I can afford one of its erstwhile factory domiciled big wooden tables or sleek sixties zebra print sofas. To the vintage design junkie its mid-century furniture is THAT good. It took me a good long while to figure out that Smith Street Bazaar also sold an incredible selection of vintage clothing, jewellery and accessories from the mezzanine level out back, but really where Smith Street Bazaar excels is with its beautiful, beautiful furniture. Selling a mixture of bona fide vintage pieces alongside tables, benches and so on made from reclaimed wood or literally reclaimed from industrial enterprises, many of Bazaar's pieces have been lovingly reupholstered to give them a modern edge. Sure, this stuff is pricey but when compared to the contemporary furniture shops around the corner on Johnston or other vintage furniture shops in Melbourne, Smith Street Bazaar's prices aren't that bad at all. If you love vintage furniture in mint condition you will adore the Smith Street Bazaar.

Yelp
Let the Buyer Beware. If you purchase something from these stiffs, make sure you're going to want to keep it. Not only won't they take it back, but they won't even take it back on consignment -- so just so you understand what I'm saying: we have just had the experience of something not being what we expected when we got it home. We asked if Smith Street Bazaar would resell it on our behalf and at our risk -- they said no way. So here's a business that does not honour the things they sell, and doesn't value customer relationships. We won't be going back -- "Big Mistake," as Julia Roberts said in Pretty Woman. There are plenty of other retailers that will have scruples and honour. Don't go to Smith Street Bazaar.
