"The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster, located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, ranked No. 3 on the list of highest-rated theme park experiences, with 80.74 percent of reviews rating it five stars. It scored an average Google rating of 4.7 out of 5 and 4.5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor. The mountain coaster was the first ever built in the thriving tourism destination. It has the second-longest downhill track in the United States at over one mile. Unlike a traditional roller coaster, individual carts, carrying one to two passengers, are pulled via cable to the top of the mountain track. Once released, the thrill level for the 7- to 8-minute ride is entirely up to the lead rider, who controls the speed via a hand brake. (Vehicles are able to travel up to 27 mph.) As thrill seekers twist and turn down the adrenaline-pumping, steep track through the mountains, riders are treated to picturesque nature views. Night rides are a favorite, as the track is illuminated with thousands of twinkling lights. The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is open year-round — rain, snow, or sunshine — and tickets are priced at $18 per adult and $14 for children (ages seven to 12). Riders must meet the minimum height requirement of 56 inches to ride alone, or 38 inches to ride with another guest." - Carly Caramanna Carly Caramanna Carly Caramanna is a theme park and travel journalist who has spent her professional career in New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles. Best mountain coasters in the area in my opinion. The daily had a great time. It was very hot out but the line had fans set up. The staff were very courteous. Most of the ride was in the shade.

Pretty cool to say we've been on the country's longest alpine coaster! It's just off the main strip in Gatlinburg and I have to start by telling you the lines here go WAY faster than other Coasters in the area. While the line looked full when we visited during the peak of spring break travel, we only waited about 20-25 minutes for our car because. Since they have such a long track, they are able to load and operate many cars at once. The line is covered so you're not baking in the sun and there are restrooms inside the gift shop if needed. My usually timid four-year-old LOVED IT! He shocked us by saying, "faster daddy, faster" until he fully released the brakes. My 7 year old has asked to return every day. If you don't want to go full speed, you can pull the handle to slow yourself down. The entire ride is about seven minutes and its a real thrill to whip through its turns at full speed. The track even lights up in the evening for a night ride!

Google
The night time ride was honestly so much fun, we went an hour before closing and they were not too crazy packed and they had an amazing system going to get people on and off the rides. Me and my bf were able to ride together with honestly a comfortable ride, he is about 5’10 and I’m 5’4! We had trouble with the kiosk machine for the photo but I told the employee, they came out tried to fix it and than when they couldn’t they still made sure I got my picture!

Google
This came up as the best mountain coaster in a search and I do believe it is true, it was a blast! What made it even better was that they offer a Military discount, while it is not something I ask for, but when I was asked it was a nice surprise. Give this place a shot, you will enjoy it!

There are a lot of options in the area, but my family and I would argue that this is the best! Great value, friendly staff, and is fun all-around. There are rushes of crowds, but they move everyone within reasonable time. Definitely recommended!

Google
What a fun stop! The Alpine Mountain coaster ride lasts 6-8 minutes depending on if you use the brake. It’s fun for all ages. There was a line, but it was only about a 10min wait. They are quick to get you on the ride. It is recommended to leave your loose belongings in your vehicle which I would definitely recommend since there is no way to retrieve anything you may lose on the ride. They offer pictures as well as shirts and other novelty items. The bathrooms are clean and there was plenty of parking in the lot. It’s a safe place so no worries on leaving things locked in your vehicle. The prices were very fair. I’d recommend a stop. I’d love to try it at night as you could see they had tons of lights for night riders.

This was a great experience! The lines will be long, but it's worth it for the adrenaline it gives you! It has some nice loops ad turning points, and the tickets are not as expensive. I would also recommend going to Rocky Top, because they offer rides after dark with lights! I would go here again, I loved it!

David Jesse

Google
Lovedddddd this well worth the hour wait lol. Check out the local coupon books for $2 off...(not that it's very necessary it's only 18 for an adult great price)

Solomon S.

Yelp
Super fun and definitely recommend going down fast! Good deals on Groupon, I think it was $60 for 3 of us to go 2 times each.

Cassidy H.

Yelp
If you're looking for a fun, unique experience in the Smoky Mountains, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is definitely worth checking out. We were initially intimidated by the long line, but thankfully, it moved quickly, and the wait wasn't as bad as it seemed at first. When you arrive, you purchase tickets and hop into line. One important tip: make sure to leave any unnecessary items (like bags or phones) in your car. They're pretty strict about you not carrying anything with you on the ride, so be prepared to store them away before you get started. The ride up the mountain takes a bit of time, and while the views aren't particularly stunning, it does give you a chance to prepare for the ride down. If you're like us and tend to want to go full speed right away, keep in mind that if there are people ahead of you riding slowly, you might have to hold back a bit. The ride can lose some of its excitement if you're constantly braking to avoid getting too close. There's also an option to buy photos and merch, though we chose not to purchase anything. All in all, the experience was fun for a one-time adventure, but I don't think I'd pay to do it again. If you're in the area and looking for something a little different, it's a good way to pass the time, but it's not a must-repeat experience.

Yelp
Saw this unique type of Alpine coaster & it looked like fun, Oh boy, it sure was. Here a few tips to better enjoy your ride. 1- Each person get your own alpine cart, so you can fully control your own speed & braking point nerves, down the long & fast turns. 2- Make sure you don't get behind or loaded into an alpine cart of a person who will slow down your ride experience by them being scared & staying on the brakes going down hill. I loaded in the cart & asked the attendant for lots of space 150' between me & the alpine cart in front of me, so they wouldn't slow my downhill ride. 3- Check local tourism guide for discount coupons. 4- Careful not to loose your sunglasses or cell phone on this jarring fun ride.

Yelp
This mountain coaster was so much fun!! I'm scared of heights, but this was a blast. Definitely enough thrill & the speed was just right. I even found myself slowing down more than expected. Appropriate for guests of all heart healthy ages. Beautiful view of the mountains at the top too.

Jeanita O.

Yelp
I enjoyed the speed, location, and safety of the rollercoaster. The ride is short and fast. The quality of pictures is excellent, and the price is not too expensive. Two people may also ride together. It's a thrill for sure! I am a returning customer.

Rumit P.

Yelp
The service and coaster ride were excellent! We redeemed a Groupon voucher for two rides and it was a great deal. The cashier was competent and friendly and knew immediately how to process the voucher; the ride operator was knowledgeable and explained what to do and what not to do; and the ride itself was smooth, fun, enjoyable, and relaxing. It was longer than we expected, and the twists and turns enhanced the overall excitement. It was definitely worth the visit!

Patriot P.

Yelp
Good Alpine.Coaster. Nicee bright looking clothing merchandise is available inside store after your ride is over. Good times. Fast ride Up the mountain we go!

Kaitlyn P.

Yelp
Probably the best coaster we've been on in the area. Long trip up which meant a long trip down! We had kids ages 3, 11 and 14 and they all LOVED it!

Darlene B.

Yelp
Purchased a groupon for this coaster, and if I could give the coaster 6 stars for the experience. The coaster track itself is the longest in the country, and the ride itself is 7 to 8 minutes. The coaster offers you a choice of single, or double seaters. Scenic, sublime beautiful view along the ride. If you hang on to your ticket at purchase, same day rides for $10 return. This coaster offers night rides, does your photo, and has a gift shop. My boyfriend and I visited this attraction, on the way to Pidegon Forge.

Eric L.

Yelp
It's fun, creaky... Not much else to say, make sure you wear gloves if it's cold as you need to use the handle bars.

Jina M.

Yelp
This is in a great location, beautiful hills of Tennessee. It took a bit longer than expected to get up to the top and released from the automatic system. Once released and able to speed along at my own rate it was a fun ride. Wish it was higher up and took longer to complete though especially for the price. Would recommend and will try it again if I'm in the area.

Carrie G.

Yelp
One of the longest coasters i believe in the area. Lots of fun!! Great for all ages! And always see people with smiles having fun

Madelyn B.

Yelp
Ugh! Arrived with Groupon tickets and had to wait in a line to get them printed. The ticket people were extremely rude in multiple occasions. They ignored and looked at us instead of asking "how many?" Or "how may I help you?" After we awkwardly checked out we were waiting in a line for the bathroom a woman walked in confused about why she had to wait in the ticket line if she already bought tickets online... instead of saying "I'm sorry ma'am but you have to wait in line for a printed ticket like everyone else" the ticket lady rolled her eyes sighed and proceeded to argue with the woman "where's your tickets huh?! Let me see them? I don't see any?". I was very disappointed because customer service has been very off this whole trip... We got done waiting in line for tickets and then had to wait in line for the actual ride... we waited for about an hour... The ride itself was fun and about 10 Minutes long. I was scared but my nine year old was not. It was super chilly and started off slow and then went VERY fast. Customer service 1 star Ride itself 4 stars

Shelby G.

Yelp
This is so much fun! My first mountain coaster experience and it was fun and not crowded at all. Grab your ticket at the front booth, get in line, and grab a coaster for a quick ride up the mountain and back down. This moves quickly, so listen closely to the rules and how to operate the coaster. You're on your own once you're going up the mountain, so ask questions if you have them before you go. Affordable and fun for adults and kids. Go at night to see the lights, but also fun during the day.

Dan L.

Yelp
Not sure what the hype is all about. After a week full of riding mountain coasters I rank the Alpine one from the bottom of my list. We rode it both day and night (better) but firstly the staff is very uninspired, no personality and just seem to not care. Every other coaster, the staff joke around, engage, smile and make sure you're having fun. And then to the coaster itself it has a smooth long ride up but the descent is pretty basic and I don't think it feels as fast as other tracks in the area. We are surprised this one consistently ranks so high on many top mountain coasters lists.

Hillary N.

Yelp
We rode 3 different mountain coasters are on family vacation and this was our favorite. Rocky Top was too fragmented with the down hill portions broken up with slow up hill portions so you couldn't get a good ride going. The Goat coaster at Goats on the roof was better, but tossed us around a lot and gave me a headache. This Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster was smooth and had beautiful forest views as we went up and down! Our group of 11 enjoyed it so much we all rode a second time and it's discounted for the second ride! Well worth the wait compared to the other coasters we went on. As always - if you're caught behind a slow (or stopped!) cart it's no fun... I wish there was a way to prevent this from happening or allow a second ride free if you're stuck behind someone like this.

Joshua J.

Yelp
The experience here really depends on the person in front of you. I went with my parents and daughter who were able to go full speed through the entire track and loved it. However, I stepped back to take a picture as they were entering the cart and ended up being behind a person in another group. He was crawling slowly the entire way down, and even stopped multiple times, so I also had to creep slowly down the entire slope. The automatic break was kicking in as soon as I got to the top. It was slow enough that my parents had finished the ride, bought my daughter a sweatshirt at the gift shop, and were still waiting for me to get done, even though I was only about 3 carts behind them. This really ruined the entire experience.

Zay M.

Yelp
While visiting the area, my party of 5 stopped by here around 2:50pm on a Monday afternoon. I found a Groupon online which definitely helped cut down the cost. It wasn't too busy. I first had to check in and get tickets, which was quick and easy. There wasn't a line. Afterwards, we had to get in the line to ride the coaster. There was a little line. While we were waiting, I noticed that the ticket line was line. The coaster ride was 1 mile long and 7-8 minutes to complete. During the incline, you don't do anything. You'll see signage when you need to take control. The coaster was fun and thrilling. I was in a coaster with one of my sons. The downside is that you can only go so fast because you have to maintain a certain distance from the person in front of you. The people in front of us was going Kinda slow, so we couldn't go as fast as we wanted to or we would've risked bumping into them, which is a no no. I think they should increase the distance between the coasters to allow for people to go fast and not be hindered by those going slow. At the end, there will be a photo of you that you can buy. I am unsure at what point they took the picture, lol. However, the cost was pretty expensive and honestly not worth it. Taking a picture of the screen is prohibited. They have restrooms available but they were out of order.

Kristen R.

Yelp
First time on a mountain coaster, and what a treat! The whole area was fantastic. Right across the street was an Antique Mall, and then we walked right over here and got in line for the coaster. I had a Groupon, so husband and I both got to ride for under $30 bucks. Employees were very interactive and made sure everyone knew the rules and how to operate the coaster. Once you get to the top, you get to choose how fast you go, and I decided to go full speed, and I had tears by the time I got to the bottom because I went so fast! So much fun, and I never once felt unsafe.

Ceraye C.

Yelp
This was the most fun activity i've done in a long time! The coaster is ling and starts with scenic views and ends with an exciting thrill. The whole thing lasts a solid 8 minutes. I screamed, i laughed, i cried, and i wanted to do this ride again and again. Pro tip- there's a groupon which saves you $10! get it

Louis M.

Yelp
best apline i've been to very long don't go behind slow person when you want to go fast it ruins exprience and auto brake for coasters are good and bad went two times signs has a guide like slow down for people who have never been on these coasters this is my 2nd coaster apline i've reviewed and is amazing

Elliot F.

Yelp
I went to this activity after some rain, and the line was not that long at all. It is a fun scenic ride, with a slow lift section that lets you take in the scenery, and then the down section has many measures to slow you down, like many circular parts and sharp turns. I like the fact that you can control your speed, but my only problem with this is a very minor problem that really doesn't affect this ride for most people: It is a little on the slower side, and again, it is a perfect speed for a bit of a thrill, while allowing you to still take in the scenery. In conclusion, this is a great family-friendly ride with beautiful scenery Edit: The line can and will get VERY long, so I would suggest that you don't schedule a specific time to do it, instead do it whenever the line is short.

Charles M.

Yelp
So much fun! Highly recommend! This was at the top of my bucket list. Was definitely faster than I expected.

Sean M.

Yelp
Of the many rollercoasters throughout the region, this one was good. Long lines, kinda crowded tracks. What really Brought the rating down was that they separate my family to make room for riders that I believe were riding a 2nd time. One or two people difference wouldn't be a big deal but they literally separated my kids by a good 12-15 people.

Mike O.

Yelp
OMG....this was so much fun...! We saw that mountain coasters in this area and after checking several YouTube videos about the coasters we decided this would be the best and we were so right. We found some discounts on Groupon that made it even a better experience because it reduced the price of the visit. Once you get that, if you do, get the ticket window and you get on the coaster after. They explain what to do, but in a nutshell you have levers on each side. You push forward to go and pull back to stop...I highly recommend you push forward and go full speed all the way. It was fast and fun and smooth all the way down.

Jay S.

Yelp
Hands down the absolute worst mountain coaster I've ever ridden. We waited well over an hour in line (no problem). We have this light up ginormous excitement building rode to the top. Then 3 turns in the coaster started braking. Then every turn it brakes for me. I pushed forward the entire time. By halfway down I am going 5 MPH. People stacking up behind me. At one time I could see 4 cars behind me going the same 5 MPH. They let the Karen lady in front of me ruin it for 6 people total. We all demanded our money back. All they would give us was a free ride that must be used within 2 days. What a complete ripoff. This thing is hot garbage. Save your money. This is complete trash. Go to Goats on a Roof or Rocky Mountain Coaster. They are both the real deal. This one is complete shit. Don't waste a single cent on this place.

Jimmy A.

Yelp
The ride itself is pretty long and fast. I didn't think the staff was the friendliest, especially compared to the other 4 coasters we visited while on vacation this week. Also, the pictures it takes on the ride were blurry at night and looked like lens needed cleaned and/or shutter speed adjusted. When I looked at the photo afterwards the girl up front with braids could care less that we would've bought the picture if not so blurry. Keep in mind we bought photos at every other mountain coaster and even bought a video at Moonshine mountain coaster!

Madi A.

Yelp
The coaster was super fun, we went at night, it does get pretty packed at night, but the line moves along fairly decent! It did take a while for someone to approach us at the counter afterwards to view our pictures/buy one, but other than that it was an awesome experience!

Angie H.

Yelp
I loved this! It was only $18 an adult, which is one of the cheaper excursions you will pay for here. Plus, after your ride, you can get a same day ride again pass for only an additional $10 (I'm not sure if that's for adults and kids are cheaper or not). We went around sunset and it was gorgeous to see the mountains. It wasn't anything super crazy where you would feel unsafe, but it was gorgeous and the turns were fun and fast to where you still get the roller coaster experience! You are able to double up too, which is nice for couples or children and parents. We went back again at night and the lights were gorgeous! I definitely recommend going here!!!

Lo K.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this!!! There are MANY mountain coasters throughout Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg but we went here as it was #1 on Google and it was close by. The wait time was only 15 minutes or so and there was a safety briefing and many signs reminding you to not have any loose articles. It's good for all ages as there was an 11 year old in our group that went alone. It was evenly priced with the others and we also found a coupon that gave us 10 percent off. The climb up through the woods is a great way to start off the trek. Once you get to the top it's all on you as you are in control of your own speed. We went twice. Professionally staff! There are no pics of the ride because both hands were in the controls!!

P G.

Yelp
This was a fun coaster. It's fast and long. It is on the outskirts of town so you really need a car to get there. I believe this was the first coaster in this area and built in 2013. This was my first alpine coaster ride ever and I didn't know what to expect. It would have been helpful to have more instructions from the staff.

Nick C.

Yelp
You are at the mercy of the person in front of you. Took my 4 kids in excitement of going fast. We waited about 30 mins which wasn't bad. Got to the top of the hill and a lady in front of us road her brakes all the way down. So much so that everyone had to stop several times. I think we might have hit 5mph once! It's not worth the money.

Abegail A.

Yelp
If you're in the Pigeon Forge area, riding an alpine coaster is a must. We checked out a few in the area, and Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster was my favorite. We enjoyed it so much that we rode the coaster three times - back to back, and then again later in the evening. Riding the coaster at night is definitely a must. Price to ride the coaster is comparable to others in the area (be sure to check out various tourist booklets for a discount), with reduced pricing for additional rides that same day. If you choose to ride again, be sure you keep your receipt! The coaster is about 9 minutes long and goes as fast as 30mph. This was my first time riding an alpine coaster, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was so much fun, though! Before taking off, they explain how to slow down (no stopping once the coaster starts, until you reach the end). You control your speed on this two seater coaster, which leads you through a couple tunnels and 360 turns. Don't worry if you end up slowing down a couple times as they leave a good amount of room between each coaster. If you go in the evening, the wait to ride is longer than that during the day. They also take your picture at some point on the ride, so you're able to have a souvenir of your experience.

Jamie S.

Yelp
This was our first ever mountain coaster, and it was so fun! This went way faster than we expected it to, and it wasn't exactly the smoothest ride at the sharp turns, but it was still so fun, and we plan to go to more mountain coasters on our next visit!

Kimberly C.

Yelp
We found a great deal on Groupon that offered two people for the price of one! The staff made sure lines were moving effectively and answered any questions we had. The mountain coaster itself was long and definitely worth the buy!

David S.

Yelp
Had a great time here with the family. Lines moved quickly and the ride was exciting. Lots of parking.

Starla M.

Yelp
Used the Groupon, that was easy! Perfect location just off the main thoroughfare. Nestled up into the mountain is literally a mile of all smiles! It's a nice long ride up just to kill you in anticipation, but it's also nice to lean back and enjoy the beauty for a quiet minute or two. Then before you know it see how brave you are. Can you fly down full speed it's up to you the brake s are in your hands so use em or not! See you at the bottom!

Apps Paramedics O.

Yelp
This was so much fun. My family had a blast riding the ride. The only thing I didn't like was the ride slowed itself down. I think it might be for safety reasons, but if you ride motorcycles for a living, the speed is a must. Thank you for the experience!!!

Andrea T.

Yelp
I have physical limitations, so I was unable to ride this. My husband and 2 boys rode it and really enjoyed it. My husband said it's a little "jerky" on different areas so you may want to be careful if you have back problems. Overall a fun thing to do.

Angela R.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best experiences I've had on my vacation through the Smoky Mountains. I've seen ride-along Youtube videos a year or so prior, so being able to ride this was amazing. It thankfully wasn't very busy when we went. We got a Groupon for two tickets (still have to wait through normal line if there is one, but it saves you some money!) and there was no wait at the ticket window and no wait to get on the ride itself. They give you something to scan before getting on the ride, you just strap yourself in, somebody will check and make sure everything is locked in where it should be, they'll give it some space between you and whoever is in front of you, and you're off! The way up is maybe 4-5 mins and the way down is around 2 minutes. The way up is quiet and a cool way to see how high up you're really going. The way down is super fun with lots of curves and tight corners. You can control your speed and go super fast or a slower safer-feeling speed. Overall the ride is so fun and definitely worth the stop. My only criticism is I wished they gave a little more room between people, because if you want to go fast and there's somebody slow in front of you, it kinda takes away from the fun since you obviously don't want to crash.

Patrick P.

Yelp
Best coaster in the area hands down. They say it's the longest ride which makes it a little more worth your time and money. The price is still pretty steep at 18 bucks a ride. It's not really good value until your second ride which is 10 bucks.

Cindy W.

Yelp
Have been on several mountain coasters while visiting gatlinburg area. This is my favorite so far. Does not have areas in track where forces slow down and is the longest downhill. We went during day when crowded, line went quickly, but they were sending people relatively close together so I ended up having to slow down toward the end since I was obviously going faster than the girl in front of me . Looking forward to next time and will go after dark

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
The Alpine Coaster is great, I won't lie...A_LOT faster than I was expecting! We purchased our tickets online and assumed that would allow us to skip the "cashier" line and that we would just have to scan our vouchers. We made the line...quite long I'd say with social distancing stickers that NO ONE followed except for us. We finally get to the turnstyle and our barcode wouldn't scan. Soooo purchasing online is of little benefit because once you arrive, you're expected to make that "cashier" line first. She'll ask you for Drivers License and CC used online and then gives you another ticket with another barcode which is the one that will work at the turnstyle...meh! That whole process was confusing and not well explained in my opinion. Once I was on the coaster, all was forgotten. I swore I was gonna fly off a few times and kept thinking I might die but yet I never put on the brake. Full speed ahead the whole time to infinity and beyond. Save your ticket and you can ride a second time for $10. Once was more than enough for me but it was definitely a fast coaster.

Jamie M.

Yelp
As a current roller coaster junkie, I needed my coaster fix while in Tennessee. I'd seen tons of mountain coaster YouTube videos of mountain coasters in Switzerland, etc and was excited to find there were at least 6 in Tennessee. Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster seemed to be a general favorite as well as the longest actual track so I decided to go with that and I was definitely not disappointed! My visit was mid-late afternoon and I think I waited about 5-10minutes to buy my ticket and then about 40 minutes to ride. The ride up is probably 4-5 minutes and the ride down is maybe 2-3. (I was behind an older gentleman who started going slow about 1/2 way or so throughout the course so it may have been longer for me). Highly recommend and glad to check it off my bucket list. ***80% of the line was not wearing masks so if that bothers you, I wouldn't go. They do wipe down the carts between riders!***

Consumer O.

Yelp
Something must have changed recently. The Jamaican girl selling tickets is rude, like we bothered her by buying tickets. Ride seems very worn out and unsafe.

Terrica W.

Yelp
Such a fun attraction in Pigeon Forge!! I went in mid-January, and it was COLD. About 20 degrees outside. This coaster is one where you control the speed, so needless to say, my hands were FREEZING! The total wait time was about 15-20 min, and we went around 8pm. It would be nice if they had little heat lamps while waiting. The ride up the mountain is slow but nice. There are some parts of the mountain that are pretty dark, so it can be a bit creepy. Once at the top, You'll see a sign that says "Push forward" when you need to go and that's where the speed comes in. It was such a rush. However, it got scary going super fast around the curbs, so I had to slow down at those points. Scenery is Amazing as well! It was reasonably priced. $18 for adults & $14 for kids. Total ride time is about 8 minutes long. I believe this a must do if you're in the Pigeon Forge area! Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures because my hands were that cold!

April W.

Yelp
This is a VERY popular & crowded alpine coaster ride in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Plenty of families and children out on a COLD Saturday afternoon. Ticket prices seemed reasonable at $18, but I've never done this sort of thing so idk. Had a blast with my friends & I would come back for sure, maybe earlier on a less crowded day.

Yelp
The ride was ok but the customer service is so horrible it ruined the experience. The cashier didn't greet us or say anything when we were purchasing tickets, she just stared at us. The ride operator didn't explain the rules properly or help us scan the tickets and seemed annoyed without helping. The guy at the end was also rude.

Yelp
We loved this alpine coaster! Although the wait was about 45 minutes the line moved quickly. Fun for adults and children alike. Must do in this area!
