We just returned from a stay at SO/ Sofitel Mauritius and left with mixed feelings. While the beachfront location is stunning and the frontline service was truly warm and welcoming, the overall experience was far below expectations for a 5-star resort.||What we loved:||Our seaview beachside room was spacious, private, and had direct beach access — a major highlight.||Front desk and concierge staff were consistently excellent, especially Tariq and Raj, who were always friendly, helpful, and went the extra mile.||The resort is quiet, peaceful, and great for relaxation.||However, several issues disappointed us:||Very limited dining options: only one main restaurant and one poolside bar with a simple lunch menu (12pm–6pm). For a resort of this scale, the lack of variety was surprising.||Breakfast lacked variety and creativity, with almost the exact same spread daily. The selection didn’t reflect international tastes or match expectations for a 5-star luxury stay. Dinner was also underwhelming.||Staff inconsistency: multiple staff told us our private pool could be heated, but later another staff clarified it couldn't. This conflicting information is confusing and reflects poor internal communication.||We experienced delayed service several times. For example, beach towel requests took 30–40 minutes even when it wasn’t busy.||The buggy service is unreliable — we were once told to walk 1.5km to our room as the wait would be 20 minutes. This is not acceptable for a luxury resort.||TV wasn’t working, with audio but no image. The technician came late and said it would be fixed the next day, but no one followed up even after we reminded the front desk.||Housekeeping was subpar: towels were taken but not replaced, and staff entered the room with shoes on, which felt inappropriate for a beachfront resort.||The gym is poorly equipped with outdated machines and minimal variety — definitely not on par with modern resort fitness standards.||The kids club is extremely disappointing: just an old plastic slide and a small baby pool. Nothing engaging or safe enough for families expecting proper facilities.||There’s a gift shop, but it only sells local crafts and fashion. Also, no convenience store nearby, so bring your own snacks and drinks — you won’t find any basic essentials on-site.||In conclusion, while the people at the front line are excellent, the back-end operations, maintenance, and guest experience fall short of the SO/ Sofitel brand. With better service standards, upgraded facilities, and proper training, this could be a truly world-class resort — but it's not there yet.
