My husband and I booked one night at the Frankfurt Sofitel at the end of a river cruise. I had stayed at Sofitel properties before, so trusted the quality, plus it looked well-located on the map. I was not prepared to be floored, which I was. Wow! The Sofitel Opera Frankfurt is a modern, elegant, and somewhat glamorous hotel. It was a great value for its service, comfort, and location.
The lobby was spacious with lots of comfortable seating. The reception staff were friendly and helpful (and spoke English). We checked in around 11 a.m. and our room was ready early, which was a nice surprise. The receptionist showed us how to operate the elevator (you have to use your room card and then indicate your floor on a touch screen--use your fingernail, not the pad of your finger on the screen and it works better!).
We got to our room and I thought I had accidentally booked the Presidential suite. The room was huge! It had a beautiful view of the park, lots of space, and a huge bathroom (double sinks, separate WC, enormous shower). I could get lost in this room. I pay almost as much to stay at a run-down motel on the California coast. The amenities were top-notch and everything about the room was elegant.
We went back downstairs after dropping our bags in our room to ask the concierge a few questions about travel time to the train station (we were departing via train the next day). He was incredibly friendly and helpful, even printing a page from a website with the platform number where our train would be. When I asked him for a city map and to mark the best route to the old town, he did one better...he walked us out the door, down the drive, to the street, and pointed us in the right direction. He explained a simple, direct, easy route that I would have never figured out on the map, and I would have never guessed to go down the small alley/street he indicated. The old town was only a 5-7 minute walk down lovely, wide pedestrian streets.
The hotel is right next to the opera house and a park runs in both directions. After exploring the old town, we walked back to the hotel and enjoyed just walking in the park (which is loaded with cute bunnies nibbling the grass). The bellman recognized us coming and going and was very friendly. Later in the evening, we decided to have a drink in the bar. The service was friendly, the drinks were good, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Olives and little crunchy nibbles came with the drinks.
Overall, the Sofitel Opera Frankfurt was a perfect experience: excellent service and location, beautiful hotel, and a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. If I return to Frankfurt, I would book this hotel. I wouldn't bother checking anywhere else. My only tip is that if you are beginning or ending a tour, as we were, book independently. I could have booked the Sofitel through our river boat line, but the charge through them was three times what I paid on the hotel's website.
