15 Overwater Bungalows to Book in 2024 - AFAR

"This idyllic Tahitian resort features 113 thatched-roof bungalows—some suspended over a calm lagoon free of jet skis—with private decks that allow immediate access to crystal-clear, fish-filled waters and glass floor panels for viewing marine life below. The property blends comfortable king-size beds and wood-accented Polynesian decor with convenient access (catamaran transfers from Papeete) and a peaceful, remote feeling ideal for beach and snorkeling escapes." - Annie Fitzsimmons

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort — Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Why book? One of the first resorts to open on Moorea—the second-largest of French Polynesia ’s Windward Islands—this luxe yet laidback hideaway combines an idyllic location with a long list of amenities, plus authentic experiences imbued with the singular exoticism that famously lured luminaries like Herman Melville and Paul Gauguin to the far-flung region’s storied shores. Set the scene Nestled within a pristine, marine-protected area on the white-powder sands of Temae, Moorea’s longest private beach, the village-like property affords guests unrivaled views of Tahiti—its neighbor to the east, and a 30-minute ferry ride away—as well as an indelible immersion in French Polynesia’s myriad charms. Attracting an array of guests, spanning elegant French grande dames swathed in pastel sarongs to young families and honeymooners, it’s a peerless base for exploring the jagged majesty of Moorea, whose lush emerald hills, studded with waterfalls and boundless blankets of flora, are almost Jurassic in their otherworldly grandeur. The backstory Originally built as a 15-bungalow bolthole by an American expat in 1970, the resort added 35 more rooms in 1977 and was christened the hotel Kia Ora (a Maori greeting meaning “be healthy”). French hospitality giant Accor purchased the hotel in 1987, when it joined the Sofitel stable; following a full renovation in 2006 that included the addition of a second branch of overwater bungalows, the 114-room getaway reopened as Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort in 2007. A soft refurbishment of all bungalows and common areas wraps up in early 2023. The rooms The 110 bungalows, which are all outfitted with a king-size bed and an additional single bed, are a simple island-chic; dark wood furnishings and ceiling fans, luxe bathrooms with rain showers and double sinks, and colorful accents in a tropical palette influenced by painter Paul Gauguin—arguably French Polynesia’s most high-profile patron. The 38 overwater bungalows provide direct lagoon access for a dip or snorkel in the cerulean sea, and feature a glass floor panel framing a the seabed below. If privacy takes top priority, spring for one of the five luxury horizon overwater bungalows, which offer unobstructed views of both the lagoon and Tahiti in the distance. For a family or small-group getaway, the airy luxury villa boasts two king-size bedrooms, a sofa bed in the living room, and an outdoor deck with a jacuzzi overlooking the lagoon. Food and drink All-day restaurant Pure serves up a sprawling breakfast buffet complete with omelette and pancake stations, heaving tropical fruit platters, and baked goods galore, including Polynesian treats like coconut bread. The poisson cru à la Tahitienne—a local take on ceviche made with tuna, lime, and coconut milk—wins raves at lunch time, as does the burger. Come happy hour, beeline to Vue Bar, the resort’s soignée social hub overlooking the lagoon, for a potent piña colada crafted with local rum and light bites like sweet-potato hummus with toasted pita and pastry-wrapped prawns with chili sauce. Then head to K, the resort’s beachfront fine-dining option, where chef Frédéric Gigou wows gourmands with a five- or seven-course tasting menu featuring delectable foie gras dusted with ginger bread with fruit tartare and toasted brioche, and a coconut-and-lime-zest-crusted mahi mahi with pumpkin puree. Available with wine pairings and served by candlelight under a Kahaia-wood cathedral ceiling—your toes in the sand as the ocean breeze rustles the palms—it’s an achingly atmospheric culinary journey. The spa Le Jardin, the resort’s transportive jewel box of a spa tucked away in a verdant garden, warrants a visit. Opt for the signature Polynesian massage, which mimics soothing wave-like movements from head to toe. All treatment products—like Monoï oil, coconut oil infused with fresh Tahitian tiaré flowers, and Tamanu oil, renowned for its healing properties and sourced from the ancient Tamanu trees that line Temae beach—are 100% natural. The area Thanks in part to an environmental protection plan first launched in the 1990s, jet skis and other motorized vehicles are not allowed in the Sofitel lagoon. The restriction has helped cultivate a blissfully tranquil ambience for both guests and the resort’s underwater species. The service Service is unfailingly warm, genuine, and solicitous—if occasionally slow. Thoughtful touches, like gifting departing guests with delicate shell necklaces, make a lasting impression. For families Family-friendly activities include flower crown workshops and personalized coral planting experiences in the lagoon with resident marine biologist and coral gardener Mathieu Kerneur, whose passion for preserving Moorea’s singular marine environment is contagious. Eco effort Besides its notable lagoon preservation efforts, the resort is plastic-free in all services—excluding water bottles, which it’s presently working to eliminate. Room amenities are sustainable and locally made, with Polynesian Monoi presented in recycled, refillable flasks. LED lights throughout the property conserve energy, and all showers and taps are equipped with economizers to reduce water consumption. Accessibility There are three ADA-accessible bungalows—two at ground level, and one overwater option.  Anything left to mention? For a dazzling day at sea, have the concierge book you an all-day lagoon tour with resort partner Temoana Tours, where you’ll explore Moorea’s impossibly crystalline waters by boat and snorkel with sea turtles and a kaleidoscopic cast of marine life. Your captain will then spirit you to a  motu  (a small island with private beach) for a scrumptious lunch of grilled fish, fries, and freshly made piña coladas served at picnic tables perched in the shallows, where friendly stingrays circle curiously, hoping for a morsel of the feast." - Alexandra Kirkman

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort (Maharepa, Mo'orea) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The next island over from Tahiti proper is Moorea, and it’s here, on the island’s longest white-sand beach, that you’ll find Sofitel Kira Ora Moorea. This shallow lagoon is the perfect setting for a couple of rows of classic overwater bungalows, while a few more stand on solid ground just beyond the beach, as does the resort’s most extravagant lodging, the two-bedroom Luxury Villa." - Tablet Hotels

Firstly, the positives. Whilst the Sofitel is not one of the most luxurious island resorts I’ve stayed at, it does offer comfortable and relaxing accommodation in a beautiful location.|The resort is set on a beach overlooking a stunning lagoon with the island of Tahiti in the distance. The swimming and other watersports are sublime and well catered for. The location is also midway between the airport and ferry terminal which is very convenient.|The service provided by the staff was efficient and very friendly. The housekeeping staff were especially prompt with the daily servicing of our bungalow.|The Beach and Garden Bungalows consist of a single room with a large bathroom at the rear and a covered porch at the front. All the land-based bungalows have the same configuration, the differences in pricing is dependent on their location on the property with beach front being the most expensive.|The bed was comfortable and the property is very quiet at night so restful sleep is readily achievable. The room and bathroom were well equipped and kept clean.|It would be advisable to use insect repellent if you planned to sit outside in the evening.|The property looks a few decades old and looks a bit “tired” at some locations. The swimming pool is a very basic affair and is in no way ay a glamorous centrepiece as is the case with many resorts. Having said that, swimming in the lagoon would be more enjoyable than most pools anyway. I note that portions of the resort are closing for 2 periods of 3 months each in 2026 for renovations. Hopefully, this will freshen up some of the facilities.|With the exception of breakfast, dining at the resort was just OK, as well as being expensive. During our 8 night stay we dined 5 nights at the excellent Rudy’s restaurant which offers French cuisine with Polynesian influences. The food at the restaurant was better quality and much cheaper than the resort. They also offer the convenience of a free return shuttle to the restaurant.|In summary, if you’re not expecting a “super-luxe” experience, the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort offers comfortable accommodation in a great location.

The highlight of our trip was definitely our stay at Sofitel in the water bungalow. It was absolutely magical and beautiful in every way, and far beyond our expectations. We truly didn’t want to leave! The peacefulness of the bungalow and the stunning views and water color made for a memorable experience. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, always going out of their way to make us feel welcome. We also did the jet ski tour, which was so much fun and a fantastic way to explore the area. The grounds were lush and well-maintained, creating a serene atmosphere for our stay. However, there were a few areas that could use some attention. The pool and bar areas, in particular, seemed to need a bit of love and care. It was clear that some parts of the facilities could use some updating to match the beauty of the surroundings. Another thing to note was the dining options—while we enjoyed our meals, we were a bit disappointed that the evening dining experiences were mainly buffets or 5-7 course meals. The bar menu was also quite limited, which was a bit of a letdown given the overall luxury of the resort. Despite these small drawbacks, we would absolutely return and look forward to another unforgettable stay at Sofitel.

We stayed in a garden view suite. Our view was the back of the OWB but it was very quiet & peaceful. We had three different sets of chairs/loungers. The snorkeling right off the beach was better than expected. There were quite a few fish & they were very friendly. There were plenty of beach loungers. The dive shop even helped me out with a replacement piece when my personal snorkel broke. |The grounds are nice but there is definitely signs of needed repairs around the resort. |We ate breakfast, lunch & dinner here at the main restaurant & all were just average except for the sushi rolls which were very good.

We went here for our honeymoon and it was awesome. The scenery around is so beautiful and we had such a great time with all of the excursions. Couldn't have asked for a better setting for our honeymoon. The food was also really great and the people were very friendly and welcoming. The only thing that didn't go perfect was that our power went out in our bungalow three times and I had to go inquire about this and then wait for someone to show up and see what was wrong each time.

Sofitel had great ambience and vibe. We loved the traditional Tahitian touches of the villas and snorkeling off the beach was simply amazing. The bed was the most comfortable one throughout our trip. Amazing dinner at K restaurant. The pearls at the shop were one of the best quality ones. Our stay was super chill and relaxing and we would love to come back

We really enjoyed our overwater bungalow experience. Snorkeling was amazing. Paid for the luxury bungalow which was very private. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. Would have appreciated some wine, not just sodas & beer in the included mini bar. Appreciated the bottle of champagne even though the note was addressed to some other guest. We found the restaurant food mediocre, staff friendly. Disappointed to witness a bar staff employee using the washroom and exiting without washing her hands! Yikes. Perhaps management should consider a hygiene meeting? Overall, not inexpensive but a mostly wonderful experience.

Our stay at Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort was absolutely perfect from start to finish! We stayed in the garden bungalow with a beach view, and it was incredible—so private and peaceful with breathtaking views. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, always going out of their way to make us feel at home. The food was fantastic, and we loved every meal. They were also very accommodating in helping us with transfers to the airport and arranging transportation to restaurants not on the island. The spa was another highlight—so relaxing and tranquil, the perfect way to unwind. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a truly special getaway!

My wife and I stayed at the Sofitel for 6 nights and were very, very impressed. We stayed in a luxury overwater bungalow, and this was the best hotel 'room' I have stayed in. Access straight into the lagoon and coral reef with really incredible underwater life. We even watched from our deck, humpback whales breaching from the water outside the lagoon. ||All of the staff were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. We ate at all of the restaurants, which were good with plenty of choices (the breakfast buffets were particularly good). The tasting menu at K restaurant was worth the cost, with a very high-quality meal. ||We organised multiple trips through the activities desk at the hotel, and these were all organised perfectly with a high-quality tour operator and in small groups (no more than 6 people on each tour we did). ||The resort itself was so quiet and peaceful, and throughout the day, we didn't seem to hear or see many other people until the evening in the restaurants.
