15 Overwater Bungalows to Book in 2024 - AFAR

"This idyllic Tahitian resort features 113 thatched-roof bungalows—some suspended over a calm lagoon free of jet skis—with private decks that allow immediate access to crystal-clear, fish-filled waters and glass floor panels for viewing marine life below. The property blends comfortable king-size beds and wood-accented Polynesian decor with convenient access (catamaran transfers from Papeete) and a peaceful, remote feeling ideal for beach and snorkeling escapes." - Annie Fitzsimmons

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort — Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Why book? One of the first resorts to open on Moorea—the second-largest of French Polynesia ’s Windward Islands—this luxe yet laidback hideaway combines an idyllic location with a long list of amenities, plus authentic experiences imbued with the singular exoticism that famously lured luminaries like Herman Melville and Paul Gauguin to the far-flung region’s storied shores. Set the scene Nestled within a pristine, marine-protected area on the white-powder sands of Temae, Moorea’s longest private beach, the village-like property affords guests unrivaled views of Tahiti—its neighbor to the east, and a 30-minute ferry ride away—as well as an indelible immersion in French Polynesia’s myriad charms. Attracting an array of guests, spanning elegant French grande dames swathed in pastel sarongs to young families and honeymooners, it’s a peerless base for exploring the jagged majesty of Moorea, whose lush emerald hills, studded with waterfalls and boundless blankets of flora, are almost Jurassic in their otherworldly grandeur. The backstory Originally built as a 15-bungalow bolthole by an American expat in 1970, the resort added 35 more rooms in 1977 and was christened the hotel Kia Ora (a Maori greeting meaning “be healthy”). French hospitality giant Accor purchased the hotel in 1987, when it joined the Sofitel stable; following a full renovation in 2006 that included the addition of a second branch of overwater bungalows, the 114-room getaway reopened as Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort in 2007. A soft refurbishment of all bungalows and common areas wraps up in early 2023. The rooms The 110 bungalows, which are all outfitted with a king-size bed and an additional single bed, are a simple island-chic; dark wood furnishings and ceiling fans, luxe bathrooms with rain showers and double sinks, and colorful accents in a tropical palette influenced by painter Paul Gauguin—arguably French Polynesia’s most high-profile patron. The 38 overwater bungalows provide direct lagoon access for a dip or snorkel in the cerulean sea, and feature a glass floor panel framing a the seabed below. If privacy takes top priority, spring for one of the five luxury horizon overwater bungalows, which offer unobstructed views of both the lagoon and Tahiti in the distance. For a family or small-group getaway, the airy luxury villa boasts two king-size bedrooms, a sofa bed in the living room, and an outdoor deck with a jacuzzi overlooking the lagoon. Food and drink All-day restaurant Pure serves up a sprawling breakfast buffet complete with omelette and pancake stations, heaving tropical fruit platters, and baked goods galore, including Polynesian treats like coconut bread. The poisson cru à la Tahitienne—a local take on ceviche made with tuna, lime, and coconut milk—wins raves at lunch time, as does the burger. Come happy hour, beeline to Vue Bar, the resort’s soignée social hub overlooking the lagoon, for a potent piña colada crafted with local rum and light bites like sweet-potato hummus with toasted pita and pastry-wrapped prawns with chili sauce. Then head to K, the resort’s beachfront fine-dining option, where chef Frédéric Gigou wows gourmands with a five- or seven-course tasting menu featuring delectable foie gras dusted with ginger bread with fruit tartare and toasted brioche, and a coconut-and-lime-zest-crusted mahi mahi with pumpkin puree. Available with wine pairings and served by candlelight under a Kahaia-wood cathedral ceiling—your toes in the sand as the ocean breeze rustles the palms—it’s an achingly atmospheric culinary journey. The spa Le Jardin, the resort’s transportive jewel box of a spa tucked away in a verdant garden, warrants a visit. Opt for the signature Polynesian massage, which mimics soothing wave-like movements from head to toe. All treatment products—like Monoï oil, coconut oil infused with fresh Tahitian tiaré flowers, and Tamanu oil, renowned for its healing properties and sourced from the ancient Tamanu trees that line Temae beach—are 100% natural. The area Thanks in part to an environmental protection plan first launched in the 1990s, jet skis and other motorized vehicles are not allowed in the Sofitel lagoon. The restriction has helped cultivate a blissfully tranquil ambience for both guests and the resort’s underwater species. The service Service is unfailingly warm, genuine, and solicitous—if occasionally slow. Thoughtful touches, like gifting departing guests with delicate shell necklaces, make a lasting impression. For families Family-friendly activities include flower crown workshops and personalized coral planting experiences in the lagoon with resident marine biologist and coral gardener Mathieu Kerneur, whose passion for preserving Moorea’s singular marine environment is contagious. Eco effort Besides its notable lagoon preservation efforts, the resort is plastic-free in all services—excluding water bottles, which it’s presently working to eliminate. Room amenities are sustainable and locally made, with Polynesian Monoi presented in recycled, refillable flasks. LED lights throughout the property conserve energy, and all showers and taps are equipped with economizers to reduce water consumption. Accessibility There are three ADA-accessible bungalows—two at ground level, and one overwater option.  Anything left to mention? For a dazzling day at sea, have the concierge book you an all-day lagoon tour with resort partner Temoana Tours, where you’ll explore Moorea’s impossibly crystalline waters by boat and snorkel with sea turtles and a kaleidoscopic cast of marine life. Your captain will then spirit you to a  motu  (a small island with private beach) for a scrumptious lunch of grilled fish, fries, and freshly made piña coladas served at picnic tables perched in the shallows, where friendly stingrays circle curiously, hoping for a morsel of the feast." - Alexandra Kirkman

My partner and I (32, 38) stayed at Sofitel for two nights in a superior bungalow with ocean view. It was a really lovely stay. The hotel has a great location and it's right on one of the main beaches, which is so amazing for swimming. The hotel bar has a great, but eye wateringly priced, cocktail menu and drinks selection. You have free use of kayak, SUP and snorkeling gear. |The resort itself it's quite nice, although, I wouldn't say it's worth the price you pay. The hotel facilities are quite run down, they definitely need a bit of TLC. The toilets (both rooms and communal) could use an upgrade. I would also say everything is overpriced at the Sofitel but we kind of expected this and luckily we had a scooter so we could eat and drink out and weren't bound to the hotel. In regards to the snorkeling, you can snorkel right off he beach but you need to head to the reef to get food quality sea life. Don't stay close to the hotel otherwise you won't see any coral or sea creatures.

We really enjoyed our overwater bungalow experience. Snorkeling was amazing. Paid for the luxury bungalow which was very private. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. Would have appreciated some wine, not just sodas & beer in the included mini bar. Appreciated the bottle of champagne even though the note was addressed to some other guest. We found the restaurant food mediocre, staff friendly. Disappointed to witness a bar staff employee using the washroom and exiting without washing her hands! Yikes. Perhaps management should consider a hygiene meeting? Overall, not inexpensive but a mostly wonderful experience.

Always been a big fan of Sofitel Hotels, but this was a massive disappointment. ||There were a few positives, generally the staff were friendly, and the bed was amazing. The location was also great, on a lovely stretch of beach. However...||The rooms are in no way luxury. Tired furniture, mouldy shower - not just underwhelming but really not acceptable for a room costing £750 a night||The beach could be amazing, but is unloved. Overflowing bins and ashtrays, broken sun loungers. And the beach bar serving low quality drinks. The rest of the grounds are ok, but pretty chewed up by the hoardes of electric buggies flying around.||The one nice restaurant only opens 2 nights a week and was fully booked days ahead, leaving the only option being the main restaurant, which itself has a polynesian night twice a week with no option but to eat from the £70 a head buffet. We ended up eating in the bar from a very small snack menu. The food was not bad at least.||The toilets in the bar / restaurant area were quite simply disgusting, and the hotel should be ashamed.||There was very little entertainment, except where they were trying to sell you pearls from the on site shop. On the Friday night there was some hope from a DJ playing some chilled out tunes, but he finished at 9.30 leaving the bar in silence.||In summary, not a luxury Sofitel experience, quite the opposite. I hear they are closing to renovate next year, shame there was no warning of this or a reflection in the price.||Take your business elsewhere!

Our stay at Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort was absolutely perfect from start to finish! We stayed in the garden bungalow with a beach view, and it was incredible—so private and peaceful with breathtaking views. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, always going out of their way to make us feel at home. The food was fantastic, and we loved every meal. They were also very accommodating in helping us with transfers to the airport and arranging transportation to restaurants not on the island. The spa was another highlight—so relaxing and tranquil, the perfect way to unwind. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a truly special getaway!

A very nice property, we stayed in an overwater bungalow. From the bungalow you could go snorkeling directly and we saw very nice fish, this is a truely added value. The snorkeling gear rent is included in your hotel bill anyway, they have a very good choice including whole face masks (at additional costs). The food is excellent. The themed dinner show with buffet was also very good.

Super friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful lagoon. Great location. Only complaint is that the dinner show dancers were not experienced. For an expensive buffet dinner we expected more from the show. We prefer a more authentic Tahitian dance and got rookie dancers. The hip swings were slow and not on the fast beat. The head pieces were not all worn correctly. Dancers had them in different positions. Over all the performance seemed geared towards tourists instead of giving authentic traditional dances.

We were so pleased with our stay at the Sofitel! Check-in was organized and easy, with everything explained to us in detail. We had Garden View Bungalows but were pleased to see that they were right on the water! Our Bungalows were clean and well stocked. We loved the free use of the water sports. We ate at the restaurants multiple times throughout our stay and they were delicious each time. We had room service and it was wonderful as well. We were very pleased with our stay here and will recommend it to others.

Is this Sofitel or is this heaven? If you’re reading this you likely already know about some of the perks (minibar, proximity to airport/ferry, changing room and shower in the lobby, etc.) Here are some things you might not know: - High end espresso machines in each room - EVERY room is free standing and well designed for privacy (angled away from the neighbors, no walls to share with anyone) - You’re never more than a few steps away from that *gorgeous* blue water (yes, it really is that color) and, being a guest of the hotel entitles you to free snorkel, kayak, and SUP rentals. - A local snorkel guide told me THIS lagoon/beach is her favorite on the island. You’ll see fish in 2 inches of water! - While Saturday and Wednesday nights are buffets (not my favorites), you might consider getting a half-board (breakfast and dinner included). Dinner was ordered off a menu and each dinner got to pick an app, entree, and dessert from a very robust selection of DELICIOUS cuisine. - The garden/beach and some overwater bungalows have outdoor showers and that is delightful. My only negative feedback: there aren’t enough pool/beach towels. They treat them like a hot commodity and there just aren’t enough of them around. Otherwise, this vacation was absolute paradise. The staff were so generous and helpful. Our time there was the best vacation we’ve ever had.
