Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade

"The French hotel chain has redone its Lisbon property top to bottom, and the result is a hybrid of Gallic savoir faire and Portuguese flavor. First of all consider the location of this 171 room sleeper—the avenida de Liberdade, a short dreamy imperial boulevard with broad mosaic sidewalks and a meridian of pollarded poplar trees and water courses that was built when the Portuguese empire was already well past prime; few roads in Europe better capture the charm and the tragedy of the European colonial experience and this one is right in the heart of town to boot. The decor of dark woods and beige, with accents of ochre and Sienna red distills the whole visual idiom of the country, and then accent pieces—the Baroque angels behind the reception desk, the Manueline curves of the cabinets that hide the flat screen TVs in the rooms, Chinese porcelain here (It was the Portuguese, of course, who opened up trade to India and China and then maintained colonies in Goa and Macau, respectively, for centuries) gives this place an edgy and intensely local vibe that comes right up to the present with dramatic framed red-and-black silhouettes of Portuguese subjects by Lisbon artists artist Manuela Mahr. Standard doubles have a boutique hotel feel and come with beds you want to swan dive into, flat screen TVs, and black-granite finished bathrooms with Roger & Gallet toiletries, and they’re comfortable, spacious and very quiet. Ad Lib, the Franco-Portuguese restaurant, is so good it’s pulling the locals with superb dishes like locally caught shrimp served with creamy risotto and fresh coriander pesto or pork medallion stuffed with spinach and figs and served with a pine-nut-and-tomato compote; fantastic wine list, too."

We spent a lovely weekend at Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade as a family and were truly impressed by the experience. The location is ideal – right in the heart of Lisbon, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and key attractions. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The rooms were elegant, clean, and very well soundproofed, allowing for a restful night’s sleep despite being in a central area. Breakfast was a highlight – delicious, fresh, and with a wide variety to satisfy both adults and children. Overall, Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade offered a perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and hospitality. We’d definitely return and recommend it to people visiting Lisbon!

Positives: Well located. The signature Sofitel bed remains excellent. Breakfast was very good, with genuinely kind and attentive staff. Negatives: The room was surprisingly small for a 5-star property. No lounge, no swimming pool, no priority desk — and no visible recognition of loyalty status. As a Diamond member, I received no special treatment: no upgrade, no welcome gesture, not even a dedicated check-in experience. Late check-out confirmation was only possible on the morning of departure — unless I paid €150. This is not the level of flexibility or service one expects from a luxury hotel. Our room was cleaned while we were at breakfast, forcing us to wait in the hallway when we returned — something I’ve never experienced in a 5-star hotel. I asked to speak with a manager and never received any response. Frankly, I wonder if using my reward points to pay for the stay affected how I was treated. It felt as though this hotel only values revenue, not guests — and certainly not loyalty. If this is how Diamond members are treated, I can’t imagine the experience for non-members.

Sofitel Liberdade is located an easy walk to most touristy locations in Lisbon. Located on a beautiful tree lined street, it is a safe area to walk in the evenings, even a lady alone.||Staff were very accomodating and quick to provide anything I needed. A phone call to house keeping would find someone at my door within 2 minutes with additional water, milk, coffee pods or even an ironing board - whatever I required. ||Room service was also quick and delicious. Try the scrambled eggs with bread room service for breakfast! Delicious and very filling.||Matiz restaurant is a relaxed place for a meal. Staff were attentive and I appreciated their suggestions and wine tastings to pair with meals.||The airport transfers were also smooth and efficient. ||Overall, a memorable stay Sofitel. Thank you.

Do NOT stay here if you value your safety or your belongings. This hotel ruined the start of our trip. We checked in after arriving from the airport, freshened up & went to get something to eat. We came back to find $800 in cash stolen from our room. The in-room safe was broken (I have video proof), and since we had JUST arrived, we never expected housekeeping to enter so soon..but clearly they did, and they robbed us. When we reported it to the manager, Bruno, his response was insulting. He repeatedly said he “trusts his staff completely,” implying we were lying, and blamed us for not using the broken safe. If your staff are so trustworthy, why do guests even need a safe? Instead of addressing the theft, we were treated like criminals for daring to speak up. This was our first stop on an international trip, so there is no possible way this happened elsewhere. We are extremely careful travelers and always carry our cash and passports in a belt bag under our clothes; the one time we trusted Sofitel to be safe, we were robbed. The combination of theft, denial, and complete lack of accountability here is disgusting. We have stayed in hotels around the world and never experienced anything so blatantly dishonest. Stay here at your own risk.. and don’t be surprised when your belongings disappear and management shrugs.

Our family had two rooms booked. They upgraded one to the 9th floor while th other room was on the first floor and small. We were far apart from each other even though we had asked to be nearby. This was booked 6 months in advance so there should not have been an issue. The first floor was loud from the sounds that came from outside. They also did not clean the room since they begin from the top floor and by the time they came downstairs it was already near 6pm. We paid for breakfast daily and the entire set up was unorganized. The food was not fresh and very messy. The wait staff took forever to come by if you needed a coffee or wanted to place an order. The front desk was only kind to those who had previously stayed with them and the rest were not treated with kindness. Overall, it was one of the worst hotel stays I’ve had in Europe. I would not recommend it no matter what the reviews say about it.

I had an incredible stay at Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade. From the moment I arrived, everything was seamless and welcoming. Rooms: The room was immaculate, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything I needed. The bed was especially comfortable, and the attention to detail in cleanliness and amenities really stood out. Service: Absolutely top-notch. The staff were warm, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. Whether it was at the front desk, housekeeping, or restaurant, the service was consistently excellent. Location: Perfectly situated in the heart of Lisbon, right on Avenida da Liberdade. Easy access to shops, restaurants, and key attractions. Great for exploring the city on foot. Everything I needed was already thoughtfully provided, and I felt truly taken care of throughout my stay. Highly recommend this hotel whether you’re traveling for business or vacation.

European sophistication with Portuguese warmth. First rate service. Friendly, attentive staff. So memorable [e.g., a superbly helpful porter, Andre S] that we returned several years later! Great location that is convenient to major sites, transportation, We also see the hotel's commitment to "green values" with minimal use of plastics. We recommend this hotel without hesitation.

The problem is the gym... I have been saying the same thing for 10 years. So I do really like this hotel but the gym has always been the frustration. They tried to improve it by having 2 gym rooms (1 fitness, 1 gym) but the ventilation system is a DISASTER. And there is only 1 treadmill... So if you are lucky, you get it. And of course, still in the basement... It is a gym from the 80s... The other hotels in Lisbon have great gym. Can't compare Sofitel with Four Seasons but the gym of the Four Seasons is unseen... But to take a more comparable brand, the Sheraton Lisbon, their gym is so much better... I really enjoy the room. I find it very classy. The Diptyque products are great. The breakfast is good (too much on the sugar side though). Porridge would be good. Something very healthy with limited sugar could be good.

Yelp
After researching online, we settled on the Sofitel on Avenida Liberdade. The hotel wasn't cheap but seemed to have an excellent location. It certainly was. The area offers a lot around it. Lots of shopping and restaurants in the area. Easy access to Alfama, Barrio Alto, Chiado, and other areas. We arrived early in the morning and were able to get our room. We had paid extra to get early access which was very much worth it. The staff is friendly and helpful. The room was large, though the king bed was a bit too soft for me. We had a nice view of the Lisbon skyline. The shower door is poorly designed. It only covers half the shower and leaks about over the tub. So the floor was soaked after every shower. Good bathroom products though, Hermes. Breakfast was in the subfloor. Large buffet with pastries, fruit, yogurt, and savory foods. The lobby had an odd smell, likely some scent or cleaning fluid, that I really didn't like.

Yelp
We are staying at this hotel for three days in Lisbon Portugal. One thing they have going for them is they have three elevators that work. Our room is very nice but there are no drawers to put stuff in. We tried to charge our phones and they wouldn't charge. So someone came up and changed out the USB, port and it still didn't work. we found a workaround. The bathroom is rather small, but that is typical, the shower is huge, but there's no grab bar. The water is dicey you get too much hot water. The breakfast in the morning is OK but we've had better.

Yelp
I'm at the lobby bar of a "5 star hotel", minding my own business, and head to the front door to pick up my ubereats McDonald's. As I'm walking to pick up my coat from the bar, I put the 2 McDonald's bags on the bar top and the concierge comes and tells me that I can't eat at the bar and that he will be calling the police on me. There are 5 other people at the bar, and none of them were being harassed like me. My immediate response to him is that there is no problems and I was not planning to eat. I said "no problems" in a very polite manner numerous times and he left me alone. Once a minute passes, the whole conversation registered in my brain and I was really bothered by the tone and condescending manner he spoke to me in. I walked over to the front desk, asked for his name, Bruno Sina, and here I am writing this yelp. I was here for a conference and was meeting clients at the bar, which was very embarrassing to have to go through this and be targeted in front of them. I have managed restaurants for 10 years in some of the finest establishment, and have never been treated like this for simply placing a closed bag of McDonald's at a bar top and threatened to have the authorities called on me. They must not like my kind, or might be in a bad mood. Regardless, very unacceptable. I will never recommend this place to my colleagues or my work. To top this off, they asked my colleague for my room number after I had left.. for what? Because I asked for your name? Because you want to intimidate me? Sidebar, we reported a cockroach in the lobby last night (check the cameras around 1-2am). Overall, Very poor attitude. Best of luck to anyone coming here.

Yelp
Stayed in Sofitel during Web Summit for 3 nights, and was quite glad that I did. Excellent central location, competent and friendly service. Beautiful common area, and well designed too outside and inside. Nice bar too, well stocked. As Accor Platinum Member, enjoyed the complimentary drinks, platinum amenity, and suite upgrade. Suite was spacious, tasteful, clean, and with good quality furnishings in the rooms and bathrooms. All in all, perfect stay. It doesn't come particularly cheap in comparison with other hotels in the area, but luxury and quality are winning combo for me.

Yelp
The hotel was beautiful and in a great location close to all sights, shops and restaurants. However, the air conditioning was not working in both of our rooms for our entire stay, 8 days and 7 nights, after having communicated thru several emails prior to our arrival, as reviews indicated that the hotel was having an air conditioning issue, that having air conditioning was an essential due to medical reasons and being told that they had designated rooms for us with working units. I would have expected to have been offered a different hotel nearby, of the same quality, as an alternative, but was offered a small fan for our rooms instead; quite disappointing and not what I expected from the Sofitel brand.

Yelp
This is a lovely hotel located centrally to much of Lisbon's activities. We loved the personal touch-slippers, a pastry to greet us in our room and a nice espresso maker. The bed is super comfortable-almost like sleeping on a pillow. And the staff is excellent-upon check-in we had many questions about various activities and they were answered in a friendly and non-rushes manner. Hotel is a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the city! Pricey but we got a decent deal on Expedia.

Yelp
My wife and literally decided to visit Lisbon on a whim. Sitting at home trying to decide on a vacation spot I suggested Lisbon. We both had never been, it seemed like it would be a city that would offer things we both enjoyed.....but where to stay? I had never stayed at a Sofitel property, but there is one just down the street from where we live. It's always gotten good reviews and anyone who I have know who has stayed there always raved about it. We gave the Lisbon Sofitel a shot and we were not at all disappointed. The good. Location. This hotel could not be located in a better location. Easy walking distance to most of Lisbon's sights. Staff. Amazing, professional and friendly. Rooms. Large, quiet and comfortable. Amenities. Workout facilities, business center, great bartenders and five star restaurant. A pool would be nice however. Wifi. Free and strong signal. The bad. Nothing, nothing at all. The Sofitel is near perfect and highly recommend with a well earned five stars.

Yelp
I had a horrible experience at Sofitel Lisboa I had 3 different stays at Sofitel Lisboa throughout my trip in Portugal. There were so many unnecessary extra charges upon check in aside from the amount you paid for booking the room. The rooms were extremely small and unsanitary. The AC wouldn't work and the windows are locked so you can't even get fresh air. The staff would not help us with our bags even if we asked for help. They wouldn't store our bags for the time we were away even if we were returning to the hotel. I never experienced anything like this in a 5 star hotel. When I have different stops during travel every hotel I've stayed at was extremely welcoming and they all accepted storing my bags even if I wouldn't return for another stay at the hotel later. The service is awful. If I try to call concierge or the reception, I would have to wait for the phone to ring about 15 times until they answer. A 5 star hotel should not and would not let the phone ring more than 2 rings before helping out. The breakfast is very limited and tastes very bland. I thought everyone was facing what I was but it was very strange that I could see how different they approached other guests who are by no coincidence all white Europeans. They were clearly going the extra mile for them and making sure they were being satisfied but disregard my group of muslim arabs completely. I was not given even half of the treatment I saw the other get from them. It's 2022 and people are still racially profiling groups. These are not the standards of a 5 star hotel. It's an embarrassment of a hotel and is obviously not ready to welcome large groups or diverse guests. There's a lot of work and catching up to do with this hotel.

Yelp
I have only one negative thing to say, the buffet breakfast is too Americanized and expensive. Twenty Euro is too high, we decided not to go in. Other than that, every thing is great, service, attitude, room, bed..... ALL TOP QUALITY. Distance is good, right between the big park and the ocean (river), walking to everywhere! We paid about 120 Euro per night in Jan, not bad. We are happy. Enjoy!

Yelp
I have never been to a Sofitel that I didn't love. LOVE. In Lisbon, this isn't a review for the rooms (we didn't stay here this time 'round) but, rather, for the restaurant and bar. So, a quickie review to say: GREAT SERVICE, AS ALWAYS. Professional, discrete, extremely helpful, and always just a step or three ahead. Order a coffee? Well, here you go...here's a complimentary mini pastel de nata just to remind you that you're in Portugal. Yelp note: restaurant (additional review to come) strongly recommended.

Smita S.

Yelp
The location of the Sofitel is excellent as it is right in the heart of the old town. One can easily walk to many places. The hotel itself is a bit dated and the rooms are small, but comfortable with good amenities. Breakfast is good but service a bit questionable. One has to wait on simple things like salt and pepper ... it would be easier to just have a set on each table. Eggs are made to order but that's a hit or miss. And the toast I ordered never came with the eggs! Guilhermo however was amazing, always coming to the rescue with whatever was needed ... and always with a smile! Carlos at the Concierge desk was absolutely fantastic. I had an issue with my flights and he went above and beyond to help me get it resolved. Thank you, Carlos!!

Yelp
The hotel it self is ok. Some of the people at the front desk are rude and aggressive. The house keeper kept forgetting to leave me coffee and cream in my room. I had to ask twice and the front desk had an attitude about it. The breakfast bar did not open until 7:00am and I had to get up at 4:00am for work and needed my coffee. I was not asking for much. What is the point of having a nespresso machine in the room without coffee and cream. I will not stay here again for sure. I will not deal with the attitude.

Yelp
A good option for busienss and leisure - its not as expensive as other Sofitels - very friendly (multi-lingual) staff and perfectly located. But stay away from the breakfast - its overprized and the coffee, juice and croissant next door in the cafeterias costs you less than 4EUR !!

Yelp
These four days in Lisboa were made stainless due to the perfect accommodation premiere by définition by the Sofitel hotel. Very attentive staff, wonderful concierge, delicious breakfasts and quite enjoyable rooms with discrete A/C helped us all rest after a few days at Gulbekian, Sintra, Alfama, etc. : a most wonderful first contact with Lisboa.

Karen Cortell R.

Yelp
I'm looking forward to my stay at this hotel. But I am unable to get an email address for their concierge or for anyone at the hotel. I want to have some help in booking some restaurants. Can anyone help with this? The phone number does not answer. I am using Skype to do this. Thanks.

Susan J.

Yelp
What a great experience, the staff went above, and beyond to make our stay wonderful. If you wanted to be treated like royalty stay at this hotel in Lisbon

Nadiya E.

Yelp
Husband and I stayed here for five nights. We left feeling neither satisfied nor disappointed. We like to feel satisfied and relaxed after staying at luxury hotels. Room of hotel is of typical size to others in Europe. Some of the staff seemed pretentious, while others were helpful. Location of hotel is great and close to metro, if you plan on using it. We found the bed to be comfortable. We had placed the "do not disturb" sign on our door two of the nights, however, came to our room with sign removed and room cleaned. On one of these nights, we found the head of a sardine on our room floor. We don't particularly like sardines and are confused as to how this was left on the floor.

Yelp
We had a 4 night stay in this hotel, all perfect except for an incident with 1 staff member which was all sorted by Jeorg on checkout. Very nice room with balcony, and the beds are the best i have ever slept in. Its a little expensive (the bar and breakfast). Will be back.

Yelp
My friend and I stayed at the Sofitel Liberdade in Lisbon from July 17-July 19 of this year and we enjoyed every moment of our stay. My only regret is not having planned to stay longer. The staff is completely professional, helpful and friendly and that is an understatement. They are all WONDERFUL. The buffet breakfast is FANTASTIC and I will dream about it every morning until I go back to Lisbon to have it again. The hotel is well situated in a safe area and there are plenty of reasonably priced meal options in the vicinity. The hop on hop off bus is just across the street from the Sofitel, so that is very convenient. Try it, you'll love it.
