Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa (Queenstown, South Island) Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Perched as it is on the edge of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Remarkable mountains, Queenstown is the ideal focal point from which to experience New Zealand’s diversity of landscapes. As a haven for ruddy outdoorsy types and backpackers cruising through on the cheap, the city isn’t lacking in vibrant nightlife, and avoiding the all-night party scene in favor of laid-back sophistication used to mean finding a hotel or villa outside of town. But a few recent additions have established toeholds of luxury in the heart of the city, one elegant example being the Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa." - Tablet Hotels

We had a truly fantastic stay at the Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa. From the very beginning, everything was handled with exceptional care and attention. Harriet was incredibly helpful with our booking, making the necessary adjustments to our stay with efficiency and warmth. Paul Leroux was equally attentive, ensuring that every request we made was possible. Their warm welcome upon arrival instantly set the tone for what became a magical stay. The service throughout the hotel was consistently excellent—every member of the staff was friendly, professional, and genuinely eager to make our experience memorable. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, which was both excellent and diverse. Dinner was equally delightful, and the raclette was a highlight. A special thanks to the kitchen team for going above and beyond to adapt dishes for our 5-year-old daughter—it made all the difference to our family dining experience. Thank you to everyone at Sofitel Queenstown for making our trip so special. This was our first visit to New Zealand, and you’ve helped create memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Very charming hotel, excellent location, in the heart of Queenstown. Beautiful lobby. Wonderful breakfast spread in the mornings. Walking distance to restaurants, a supermarket, pharmacy, etc. The ski shops and transportation to ski fields are just across the street. Front desk manager Nico made me feel very welcome. I had minor issues with a couple of things in my room (slamming door due to poorly adjusted closer, dodgy room safe, bathroom sink tap that is complicated to operate) but overall, it was a very good stay.

My daughter’s flight was cancelled at the last minute so we needed to organise accommodation for a couple of nights, given I am a Diamond Accor Status I booked her in at the Sofitel. The staff were friendly and attentive and room was nice and clean. We would recommend it. Great location central and easy walking distance to every thing.

We usually stay at the Novotel in Queenstown, but the main reason we chose the Sofitel was because of the convenience of being across the road from the NZ SKI bus. Walking only a very short distance in ski boots at the end of the day was heaven!|ALL the staff here were so polite and genuinely friendly- we were treated like royalty the entire time! The evening turn down service was very much appreciated- particularly the camomille tea and chocolate! Beautiful hotel within walking distance to everything with amazing attentive staff!

Sofitel Queenstown is the perfect blend of elegance and comfort, right in the center of everything. Steps from the lake, restaurants, and the gondola, yet peaceful and refined inside. The rooms are nice, with spa baths, and the service feels genuinely warm. A standout stay with thoughtful details and a unique, stylish charm. Highly recommend for a memorable Queenstown visit.

I stayed at the Sofitel Queenstown in Jul-Aug 2025. I chose the hotel because of the location (across the street from the ski bus stop) and even though it may be the most expensive hotel I’ve ever stayed in, it did not disappoint. The room was large and clean with a well-stocked minibar and a balcony overlooking a pedestrian only street. The bathroom has a large tub AND a large shower, with heated floor and a motion sensing light. I didn’t eat at the hotel very much but what I did have was excellent. The real strength of this hotel is the people. The concierge(s) helped me several times and the doorpersons always met me on the sidewalk to take my skis and poles and put them in the ski room for me, very much appreciated!! When I got home I found there was a billing error on my credit card and the front office team promptly corrected it.

This was our second ski holiday in Queenstown this year. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. We had a terrible experience with our stay here, such as conversations were audible from the footpath and restaurants across the street, staff were constantly moving furniture on the floor above our room that caused these loud and annoying scrapping noise, 7am the grease truck caused so much noise that sleeping was impossible, TV didn't even work, staff who checked us in was very unfriendly and lazy to explain all important arrival details and parking will cost about $50/day. Hence, we have booked with a different hotel for our spring ski holiday this September. Save your money and get a hotel were your get what you paid for and valued as a guest.

Fantastic hotel right in the middle of town. 2 minute walk to the waterfront and the ski centre right across the road. Stayed in a junior suite with lounge access so was looked after like a silk worm. Staff were great and the buffet breakfast was everything you need.

Yelp
Really nice stay here. Great location, spacious rooms and my favorite--- two in room coffee makers! Comfy bed and a small table that can be used for dining in. Hotel breakfast was really good with great French press coffee. Very friendly staff. Really close to the start of the gondola, easy walk to the start.

Yelp
Sofitel Queenstown is definitely French chic! I was lucky to have a club room and enjoyed cocktails and appetisers in the Rouge lounge each evening. The staff at the hotel were standout. Friendly and attentive. The hospitality really made for a great stay in beautiful Queenstown.

Yelp
If we are ever fortunate enough to be in Queenstown again, we will only stay here. We were well taken care of the entire stay, even when we decided to extend last minute! The staff is extremely helpful, the rooms are comfy and clean, and the location can't be beat. You can easily walk up the hill to the skyline or walk half a block to Ferg's Bakery/bar/Berger, or just beyond to all the shops, the waterfront, etc. They left us nothing to want for, and took excellent care of us for my bday visit!

Yelp
Wow. I absolutely loved this place. Loved it! Ok, maybe I'm a little biased since we were upgraded to a premium room, but I'd have loved it nonetheless. Location is the absolute best in Queenstown. Literally half a block to legendary Fergburger, 3 minutes to the lakefront, walking distance to every single thing this incredible city has to offer. A walking paradise and it's all level! No uphill climbs, no 15 minute walk back at night, and an easy to find. Perfect locale. This place is typical of the Sofitel brand in that they are attentive to service, amenities, making certain of guest comfort and providing a memorable experience. The GM, Jeremy, hosted an Accor member hospitality hour in their penthouse suite (renting for $7500 per night) complete with wine, hors d'oeuvres, and great exchanges. We met some interesting people from all over the world. Our room was incredibly spacious - almost embarrassingly so. The bathroom had heated floors. Even a small balcony. I forgot my NZ/US travel adapter and they brought up 2 USB adapters so we could plug our iPhones in. The free drink coupons, the live jazz in the lobby bar, the restaurant which was closed early in the morning when I went looking for coffee but yet, seeing me wandering around, opened their door and brought me 2 cups to go. That's the kind of service that I love. Yep, this is a special place and I'd go back. Awesome. I love Queenstown and I'll stay here next time as well.

Yelp
What a great hotel! What a helpful and attentive staff. What a fantastically convenient location to the lake! The cherry on top is that our room was also beautiful! The Sofitel definitely has a distinct French vibe, which I naturally loved. It is obviously a newer property, as evidenced by the immaculate condition of the common areas as well as the room we stayed in. Our room had a full stocked Nespresso bar where we could enjoy delicious lattes in the convenience of our pajamas at no extra cost. The bathroom was glorious. Huge shower, equally huge soaking tub and well stocked with my favorite Lanvin toiletries. There was a cute little sitting area in the corner and huge windows that allow a great look outside. My husband took advantage of the spa and couldn't stop talking about how much he enjoyed his massage and the other facilities following his service. It makes me regret not following his lead and booking a service for myself! The hotel is in walking distance to everything that makes Queenstown so popular. The Gondola is a short (but challenging) walk up the hill, the lake is just a 5 min walk, plenty of shopping and restaurants also nearby. The hotel has a great steakhouse, fabulous spa as mentioned above and a really great gym (if working out on vacation happens to be your thing). I can't say enough about the hotel. I loved my stay here and look forward to returning the next time I am back in Queenstown.

Yelp
Nice place right on the outskirts of downtown. Walk to all stores and restaurants. Solid breakfast offerings and great attention from the staff!

Yelp
Words cannot express how appreciative i am of the staff at this hotel. They make booking excursions in this very touristy city so seamless and are full of options of things to do, places to go, and great food to eat! For breakfast, they were willing to make me special meals to accommodate my dietary needs and special requests, no question. The rooms are clean and the bathrooms are very modern with heated floors and towel racks. Alee the head concierge couldn't be better and everyone is just so friendly. Benny is also really friendly and full of cool facts! The executive lounge is also a great spot and the live jazz was very nice.

Yelp
I was always going to write a review for this hotel (that's just what I do) but I typically wait until I check out of a hotel to do it but after entering the hotel gym, I just couldn't wait, in fact, I'm on their elliptical trainer RIGHT NOW! The second I entered the gym, I said OUTLOUD to myself, HEAVEN! I'm a fitness enthusiast so working out is pleasure, not torture to me! This gym is equipped with two rather new LifeFitness treadmills, a stunningly new LifeFitness elliptical trainer, and a LifeFitness bike, all boasting digital displays/personal TVs and you can also hook up your smart phone if you want to listen to music (they have iPhone 5/6 plugs too). So far my legs are burning yet happier than a kid eating cake on his/her birthday! As for the rest of the hotel, immaculate! The room is stunning with the most plush beds, when my friend and I checked in at 2pm, we sat on our beds and seriously considered saying TO HELL WITH SIGHTSEEING, I just want to see the inside of my eyelids... Alas we did force ourselves awake, we had to, after all the Sofitel's location is SMACK in the middle of Queenstown, we had no excuse! I'm sure you're wondering about the staff? Well they too are incredible, so accommodating! We even had our check in assistant bring us to our room and show us the little tid bits we wouldn't have noticed otherwise! I have one more night at this hotel (YES!) and I can confidently say, I have no doubt in my mind that I'm going to get some amazing sleep after a long day of activities today! Obviously I highly recommend the Sofitel to anyone traveling to Queenstown, NZ or really anywhere for that matter- I stayed in one in Turkey that was equally as lovely! PS: for all of you from out of the country & dying without WiFi (yes that's me, pathetic, I KNOW!) the Sofitel offers complimentary WiFi every 24 hours or 1000 MB! Where is the 6th star for my review???

Yelp
This is a nice hotel with a good location, close to most things in Queestown, as well as comfortable rooms and considerate service. My room was nice, a suite on the 5th floor down at the end. Because of the way the property slopes, ask for a higher floor room as my 5th floor room was only one floor above street level on the back side of the building. The bedroom and bathroom were quite nice, but the living area felt a little dated and dark. And there were some stains on the upholstery which is an issue for me. But back to the positives. The bed was very comfortable, with great linens and tons of pillows. Turn down service was very prompt each night and I loved the chocolates and water that were delivered. The bathroom was functional with a huge jacuzzi tub ( it even came with bath salts) a shower ( water pressure could have been better) and a sink with a handle that was as hard to maneuver as a standard shift car! Oh well, by the end of my stay I had finally mastered where hot was! The odd thing was I kept asking for two soaps ( one for shower and one for sink) and I was only ever able to get one soap. Nutty right? The coffee bar was re stocked every day ( even new cream) which was a huge bonus and the Nespresso machine made a good cup of coffee. The wifi worked well but know that there is a limit each day to how much data you can access. As for the business center, the printers weren't working on the days I was there but the front desk staff was very helpful in getting documents printed for me but it required tmeto email my work to them. While all Sofitel's try to pull off the "french vibe", this one actually does a pretty good job. From the French style decor in the common areas, to the ornate fireplace in the lobby, to the " left bank" restaurant, it had a good feel. I also liked the free cocktails and canapés available each night in the bar. Some nights there was sushi, cheeses and eggs rolls, and other nights, wings and nuts and meats. There was also a wide range of beer and wine. The staff were very friendly and helpful, greeting me each time the entered the building. And I only needed to ask for directions or help and someone was right there. But the best thing about this Sofitel is its location close to everything Queenstown has to offer!

Yelp
If you want to be treated like a King or Queen in Queenstown, book the Sofitel for your stay. The staff is friendly and attentive from the minute you arrive to the minute you leave. They will be happy to assist however they can, including making any reservations! The rooms are incredibly spacious and comfortable with all the amenities you can imagine; it was a nice touch that they have the radio on playing music softly when you enter the room. The massive tub with the TV was a dream come true after a 2 week bike trip. I love the beds, wonderfuly soft and cozy for a great night sleep. Located in the heart of downtown Queenstown you have the quaint village at your fingertips. Truly love this hotel, it's worth every penny to be in the heart of Queenstown. Make sure you check out their bar in the lobby or their steakhouse on the second floor.

Yelp
My wife and I visited a few cities in New Zealand and Australia and this was our favorite. It was everything I wanted in a hotel... Location, size, quality, style, service, and price. Location was central, we could walk to everything. Room size was perfect. Had everything you needed, plus a balcony with a view. Bathrooms were beautiful. Bath tub comfortably fits two, and had a flat screen in the wall. Service was amazing. Concierge and Front Desk were both very helpful and informative. Price wasn't cheap (in my opinion), but for under $200 a night, you can't go wrong with this hotel. TIPS - You may not want to stay on the side next to the Buffalo Club. It can get noisy. Also, WIFI is free for a certain amount of 500MB (I think), but if you want to stream or download more than that, you have to pay.

Yelp
This hotel has a great location and is easy walking distance to the lake and around town. We were planning to do lots of activities on Bob's Peak, so it was just a short hike up the hill to reach the gondola. This hotel is very welcoming as soon as you arrive. As all Sofitel hotels - they incorporate a "French Vibe" and this was especially true in the lobby and the Left Bank restaurant. All the staff throughout our stay were very polite and helpful. The staff spoke French and my travel partner loved conversing with them each day - or at least she did her best ;-) The rooms are luxurious with extremely comfortable beds and very clean. Bathroom is large with a deep spa bath with TV over the bath, great after a long day walking!! Bathroom well stocked. Turn down service was good and who doesn't love chocolate on your night stand at the end of a busy day! :-)

Yelp
My husband and I had a fantastic time at the Sofitel in Queenstown. Our room was gorgeous and the front desk was extremely courteous and helpful. I could've hung out in the room all day, but with Queenstown right outside... Only ended up using the in-room jacuzzi tub once, but it was worth it anyway. One watch-out - the movies are CRAZY expensive. Better to just channel surf if you want to veg out for a bit.

Yelp
Main issue: When we checked in, we were told there were free soda and ice cream in the lounge 24/7 as well as free alcohol 5-7. All 9 people checking in heard this and actually double checked to make sure we heard correctly. 2 days in, after we had already had the free drinks twice, we realized they randomly decided to start charging for those drinks and removed the 24/7 soda we were promised. When I went to ask about it to the 'manager' on duty (who was actually not the listed manager other times when I have seen her there) Annabelle, i was basically insulted. Not only did she claim no one said that, which they did, she was mocking me. She was rude and condescending. So upset at a manager. Why purchase the luxury rooms with the free amenities if Annabelle is going to make fun of you for something promised. Annabelle is definitely not manager material. Also, make sure your room is nowhere near the elevator as the doors are very thin. You can hear anyone and the hotel will not ask people to be quiet in the hallways. Also, don't expect a view unless youre one of 3 rooms on the top floor.

Yelp
This is a beautiful hotel but I took some issues with the commercial and impersonal feel it left me with. This French hotel is a newer one and you can tell it is regularly updated. We had modern amenities - the bathroom had a separate shower and tub with marble (?) floors. Artwork was beautiful and decor was classy. That being said, I think better care could have been taken of the rooms themselves. The light colored carpet was stained throughout. A portion of the rainfall style shower head spewed colder water than the rest. The bathroom sink faucet was sticky, making it difficult to maneuver and resulted in lots of splashing. Even though this hotel would be in the "luxury" category, instead of charging upfront for services like most upscale places, it felt like we were often nickel and dimed. For example, there is a limit on how much internet data you could download and once we hit that limit, we had to pay approximately $30 NZ for an increased cap. Also, our rate included free breakfast, which was nice, but excluded certain beverages (such as mocha and hot chocolate). The waitstaff at Left Bank were very polite, but service was slow. We asked if we could have french toast for take away, and informed them we were in a bit of a rush since our tour guide was going to pick us up at the hotel. They agreed to make the french toast but took over fifteen minutes to get it to us. When we asked if they had a fork to take along, they said they did not. So I just asked them if we could take a regular restaurant fork, to which they said "yes" and I grabbed a fork off a table. In a similar vein, when we asked the concierge if they could order us something from Ferberger (which we did because the services guide in our room said they would call to order to help us avoid the line). The concierge tried calling and was not able to get through on their first attempt. He was cordial but pretty much told us we were out of luck. Again, nothing is terribly wrong with these situations, it just felt like staff didn't go the extra mile to accommodate us. The location was great and is pretty much right in downtown. It's easy to walk to shops and restaurants. The hotel fits pretty much within the theme of the town, beautiful but very commercial. There's nothing bespoke or personalized about it, but it does provide pleasant accommodations and convenience for its guests.

Yelp
Queenstown was amazing and the Sofitel's location alone makes it well worth the price. However the accommodations and staff put it over the top. One of the greatest hotel experiences of my life.

Derek S.

Yelp
We stayed here on our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for a nicer room or service from the staff. The location is perfectly centered in Queenstown. Just about everything is walking distance with bars and restaurants surrounding the hotel. This is important because many of the nicer hotels are on the outskirts of town and even in colder summer days this can be a far walk. The concierge was extremely helpful in suggesting things to do and setting up restaurant reservations for us. All around great visit for us! My wife shed a few tears when we had to leave.
