Solar do Castelo

"So, what sets this hotel apart? This chic lemon-yellow hotel has a few major selling points: It’s inside the walls of Castelo do St. Jorge at the top of Alfama; it occupies an 18th-century mansion; and it's within a stone’s throw of some of Lisbon’s top sights. Those are some pretty distinctive features. Who else is staying here?History buffs who binge-watch travel shows and the History Channel, making them a great resource for colorful conversations—and travel recommendations. Fun! Does the service get high marks? With just 20 rooms, the hotel generally has fewer than 50 guests, meaning it’s rare that you’ll have to spend too much energy competing for staff's attention. Let them know ahead of time when to expect you for check-in. Once you're here, they're friendly and easy to flag down. Excellent. Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about the digs. The rooms are appointed with medieval-inspired furniture that have a contemporary twist (wrought iron, oversized cloth headboards). Ooh, we love it. Is there any one in particular we should book? Many of the rooms overlook the Moorish courtyard—be sure to request one. Upgraded rooms have balconies—an ideal reflective perch for starting or ending your day. That's very much our speed—thanks for the tip! How about room service, and the dining options in general? The hotel's quaint cafe offers a hot breakfast buffet (not included in the room rate). Limited room service is also available. Good to know. Any other services or features you'd like to shout out? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Don’t miss the hotel’s own mini-museum, with a medieval cistern and historic artifacts recovered from the site. In the communal space, there's also a small lounge and library. We'll pay a visit to them both. So, bottom line: Why are we booking a room here?Stay here for easy access to local history and sights." - Jenna Scatena

This is a beautiful property! It is so unique. It is quiet and private, with relatively few guest rooms. The breakfast buffet is amazing, and there are alcoholic drinks available using the honor system. The desk people are so nice and helpful. It seems a little remote at first, but we walked down the hill a bit and took the 737 bus, and it took us anywhere we wanted to go. You can buy a day pass or tap your card, it is so easy. Our room was beautiful and we had a bottle of port as part of our package. I cannot say enough good things about our incredible stay!

We had a wonderful stay at the Solar do Castelo. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the courtyard was fabulous as you were surrounded by Peacocks from the neighbouring Castel St Jorge. It was also a nice touch to have fizz available for guests at 6pm every evening. The hotel is in a beautiful area of Lisbon through cobbled streets and on top of the hill. Be prepared for some walking and also that Ubers cannot drive all the way to the hotel as it is in a protected area.

We loved our stay!!!!! The staff is very attentive. They will fulfill any need you have. The rooms and hotel grounds are spotlessly clean at all times. We just mentioned to the front desk that we wanted to get into the plunge pool and before we knew it there was pool towels and complementary flip-flops waiting for us right beside the pool. I will say that we found our mattress to be on the stiff side But a lot of people like that so it just depends on what you prefer. The pillows were very thin, but we asked for extras and were given plenty. The only thing that could take this hotel to the next level is if they did not allow smoking on the patio. We were sad to have cigarette smoke in our face during our meals, and even sadder to realize we couldn’t leave our hotel room windows open without the room filling with secondhand smoke. There’s plenty of space outside the hotel walls for people to smoke cigarettes. But that is my one and only complaint other than that, This hotel is fantastic and if cigarettes don’t bother you, you will have a perfect time here! Even the peacocks weren’t a big deal. They were so much fun to watch, they are loud, but we didn’t hear them at all during the night while we were trying to sleep.

This is one of the best boutique hotels we've ever stayed in. Its location at the gates of the castle is romantic and very quiet- except for the loud peacocks!|The rooms are meticulously decorated and maintained with every amenity. The public areas are historic, inviting, and very attractive. Located at the end of a quiet street, at the castle grounds, and behind a big door, it feels like a hidden, secret gem.|Reception desk is the best: very welcoming and helpful with tours, transfers, restaurant suggestions and reservations.|They think of the guests' every comfort, including cold pitchers of fruit flavored water during the hot days. It's a great place to stay IF you can walk and walk steep hills.|It definitely requires walking, and many steps of up hill walking.|That said, you can get a taxi, the hotel provides some service partly downhill, and there is a public elevator ( after you've walked about 1/2 mile).|Once you get downhill, you can walk to all the main sights of Lisbon.|We absolutely LOVED this hotel!

This beautifully modernised historic inn is in a great location right beside St George’s Castle and downtown Lisbon can be accessed by the very regular 737 bus just 200m from the hotel.|Many of the historic features of the building have been retained but the rooms are comfortable with excellent facilities. The buffet breakfast could not be faulted and complimentary pastries and coffee are available all day with sparking wine in the evenings and free port in the bedrooms. The staff are very friendly and helpful. |The only problem is access. When our prearranged transfer was delayed by traffic, the hotel told us to take a taxi which they would pay for. This driver could only get to within 400 very steep metres from the hotel leaving us to drag our cases up the hill to the door. Detailed local knowledge is required and if you are making your own arrangements speak to the hotel about access. |In summary, a beautiful place which we can warmly recommend. Final words - the noisy castle peacocks only crow during daylight hours!

Lovely location right beside the castle. Does involve a fair bit of steep walking but well worth the effort. Complimentary tea, coffee and cakes all day along with a free wine in the evenings and an honor system bar. Great staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely garden for breakfast and evenings. Very unique place to stay. Highly recommend

Stopping at Lisbon for a day on a cruise last year, having sampled the city we decided to come and stay for a few days to get more of a feel of the place.|The Solar do Castelo was chosen following a TV programme which featured the hotel.|We were attracted both by the location and the hotel itself.|The hotel owners are the first to admit getting to the venue is a challenge in itself. As part of the St Jorge Castle it is at the top of one of the many hills in the Alfama district.|It is well worth the effort because it is a charming place to stay. The bed was extremely large and comfortable. The bathroom and shower were excellent with all the toiletries provided. A complimentary carafe of port wine was available throughout our stay and replenished daily if necessary.|The breakfast was a buffet style and was well stocked with both hot food, and cold meats, cheeses and fresh fruit. Tea and coffee available. More than enough to set you up for the day.|After 6pm complimentary sparkling wine available together with a well stocked honesty bar.|The staff worked tirelessly to maintain the cleanliness of the rooms and the court yard where there were also tables to take breakfast if you so wished.|The hotel is renowned for the peacocks that roam free within the castle but will visit the courtyard and balconies. The plumage of the birds is fantastic, but your opinion of them may be changed as they can be quite noisy during late evening but they are quiet through the night but will provide an early morning call.|We stayed for four nights and loved every minute of our stay and can safely recommend the hotel to anyone wanting to experience staying in an authentic building in a lovely district.

Authentic stay in boutique hotel within castle walls old town Lisbon. Full of charm & character in wonderful location to step out and be amongst it all! Only slight negative is that the peacocks on the castle grounds can be quite loud and start calling early morning. Though on the positive side are a feature...

Yelp
I could wax poetic about how amazing my stay here was. I booked this trip for a brief city break and came upon it on booking.com. Transport was included and so was breakfast, all for an affordable price. One thing to note is that this hotel is pretty much inside/within the Sao Jorge hotel. It is pretty high up on a hill on Alfama. Uber/Bolt will stop about 7 min away on the hill, taxis will take you to the door, and there is the 737 bus that runs around 8a - 8p that stops at Sao Jorge, and will require a bit of walking up the hill. The rooms themselves are extremely beautiful and spacious. I lucked out and got one of the king rooms on the 2nd floor over looking the courtyard. The rooms are well equipped with robes and slippers, water to drink, and some port as well. There's a cute little museum with artifacts in the cistern. Additionally, there are several non harmful peacocks roaming the grounds too. Breakfast is very good and it's a buffet with standard deli meats, cheese, yogurt, bread, cereal, coffee, etc. in the afternoon there's tea and pastries and at night there's sparkling wine. There's also an honesty bar, and 24/7 room service. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly, and will assist with helping you get a taxi. Overall I had a great time, and will be returning here when I come back to Lisbon!

Yelp
At the top of the hill in the Alfama district, Solar Do Castelo is a luxurious respite from the tourist who trod the ancient streets. Set within the outer wall of São Jorge Castle, Solar is perhaps the only hotel I've stayed at with its own museum. The hotel wraps around a courtyard featuring a tiled arch, reflecting pool, fountain and lounge chairs. Back in your room, enjoy beside cognac, robes and slippers. The breakfast buffet features many local treats, most notably, fresh pasteis de Belem. A fully-stocked honor bar in the lobby will sate any taste. Then enjoy the historic neighborhood, the castle, the fado bars, and many wonderful restaurants. Solar and the Alfama district are among my favorite destinations anywhere.
