Solar do Castelo

"So, what sets this hotel apart? This chic lemon-yellow hotel has a few major selling points: It’s inside the walls of Castelo do St. Jorge at the top of Alfama; it occupies an 18th-century mansion; and it's within a stone’s throw of some of Lisbon’s top sights. Those are some pretty distinctive features. Who else is staying here?History buffs who binge-watch travel shows and the History Channel, making them a great resource for colorful conversations—and travel recommendations. Fun! Does the service get high marks? With just 20 rooms, the hotel generally has fewer than 50 guests, meaning it’s rare that you’ll have to spend too much energy competing for staff's attention. Let them know ahead of time when to expect you for check-in. Once you're here, they're friendly and easy to flag down. Excellent. Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about the digs. The rooms are appointed with medieval-inspired furniture that have a contemporary twist (wrought iron, oversized cloth headboards). Ooh, we love it. Is there any one in particular we should book? Many of the rooms overlook the Moorish courtyard—be sure to request one. Upgraded rooms have balconies—an ideal reflective perch for starting or ending your day. That's very much our speed—thanks for the tip! How about room service, and the dining options in general? The hotel's quaint cafe offers a hot breakfast buffet (not included in the room rate). Limited room service is also available. Good to know. Any other services or features you'd like to shout out? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Don’t miss the hotel’s own mini-museum, with a medieval cistern and historic artifacts recovered from the site. In the communal space, there's also a small lounge and library. We'll pay a visit to them both. So, bottom line: Why are we booking a room here?Stay here for easy access to local history and sights." - Jenna Scatena

The receptionist and the housekeeper did wonderful job. They cleaned my room daily when I stayed for a few consecutive night. They always smile and I felt i was welcomed. Stunning location that you can visit the nearby spots at one time. The room interior may look a bit old but all other things like the bathroom, the garden are perfect. You can feel you are living in a heritage. Also, you will get complimentary welcome drinks and water.

As soon as we walked into the hotel, we knew we had booked the right place. Parts of the Royal Kitchen to the castelo de Sao Jorge, which is right next door to the Inn were in the lobby . We love that kind of atmosphere. Rooms were very comfortable and since we were on top of one of the hills of Lisbon, we had great views. We had an issue with our shower not working when we arrived. They fixed it in a few hours while we were on a tour. Breakfast was included and very good. Be advised it's a lot easier walking down to the squares in town than walking up, but we did it many times and are in our late 60's. Streets around the Inn are very narrow and can barely fit one vehicle. Most people walk. The receptionist set up reservations for us at Club do Fado , which was realy cool. They also took care of getting our cab, when we left fo our cruise. I was also fun to see the peacocks which were around the courtyard of the Inn. This was definately an experience we enjoyed.

When, back in the spring, we were looking for somewhere to stay in Lisbon, we immediately settled on Solar do Castelo on the strength of the recommendations it received online. We've just returned from our stay, which was for a week, and we were not disappointed. If anything, all the praise which other reporters have heaped on the hotel has understated its sheer distinction. I think it's quite simply the best hotel that my wife and I have ever stayed in. For a start, its setting is magical, within the outer walls of the castle, and with the castle's peacocks popping in and out. Then there are all the special touches that set it apart - tea, coffee and pastries available in the lounge all day long, sparkling wine served in the lounge as part of the room rate, and a decanter of port on the table in your room for your nightcap. And there's the hotel's ambience, with its lovely buildings and its attractive courtyard, where you can sit or lounge while you read a book or sip your coffee. And, above all, there are the staff, whose charm, courtesy, friendliness and attentiveness are all beyond description. Just one small example: on our first morning, when I came down for breakfast and wanted to make tea, I asked for a teapot, which I much prefer to making it in a cup or mug. Every morning thereafter, the lovely lady who looks after breakfast made sure there was a pot for me. And she always greeted me with a smile and a cheery 'good morning'. To all of you at Solae do Castelo, may wife and I say a warm 'thank you' - you are wonderful. And I recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Lisbon.

Amazing historical place located on the grounds of the castle, formerly the kitchen for the castle. Service is exceptional with transfers, honesty bar, happy hour, and a fantastic daily breakfast. I decanter of complementary Ruby Port in the room is a very nice touch. Breakfast or any time in the outside courtyard is a must when the weather is nice, you may get a visit feom the resident peacock family. The small museum in the basement is also worth a visit.

We stayed here for three nights and it was a truly lovely experience. The rooms are not huge but have balconies looking down into the courtyard. The beds are comfortable, the shower is good and there is a decanter of port! The lounge downstairs and the courtyard are beautiful and peaceful. Lovely places to sit and relax and a world away from the busy crowds outside. The hotel provides complimentary tea, coffee and cakes all day and there is an excellent honesty bar as well. The staff were extremely nice and very helpful. We were given assistance to book a private tour to Sintra which was one of the highlights of our holiday. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

This is a quiet and friendly boutique hotel on to of a hill near Castelo St Jorg. It was once the kitchens. The free transfer from the airport with a knowledgeable local started the stay in the way it continued. There were lounge areas, court yard and fountains, peacocks, and shady trees, as well as a comfortable room with full bathroom and service. Luxury for this traveller. From the 24-hour reception to the included breakfast and chance to have complimentary drinks n fruit and Portuguese tarts, nothing has been forgotten. We loved it, including stepping out of the huge old doors, onto the cobbled streets, to explore Lisboa and surrounds, and the many delights of this charismatic and friendly city.

This hotel up a side street by the castle is a gem. In my list of favourite hotels. Service wonderful. Complementary drinks, water, cakes 24/7, A glass of bubbly from 6.30pm to enjoy. Water, port in room. Room was large, a little dated, but I loved it as very in keeping. So clean. Bed super comfy. Loved the plug set up and phone chargers in room. Room was dark, but I like a dark room when sleeping, and especially when it’s warm. So quiet and peaceful, but felt central. Breakfast good from 7.30am. Good mix of hot and cold. Not lots of choice, but what there was, was good quality. Pre booked taxis , also Uber & Bolt can’t get up to the castle. It is quite pedestrianise around the castle and we were dropped of and had to walk up with our bags. Hotel booked us a taxi for back to the airport. Streets were narrow, picturesque. We loved the peacocks just wandering round, the court yard setting for drinks and catching up with friends. The honesty bar was a great bonus as well. Yes at top of hill, don’t bother with heels lol. If I stayed in Lisbon again I would stay here,

This wonderful hotel was home for us for 3 nights as a treat from family for my wife's birthday. It is a fantastic location at the top of one of Lisbon's famous hills and close to the imposing castle.|A beautiful boutique hotel with lovely rooms, courtyard garden complete with a hot tub and regular peacock visitors from the castle grounds.|Reception staff were attentive, very helpful and really pleased to be of assistance. They provide a pretty good concierge service too with maps, directions and advice.|We did not have breakfast as part of our stay although there is a complimentary selection of cakes, tarts and teas and coffees available all day. At 6.00pm there is a supply of sparkling wine too.|This hotel is not an easy reach as taxis may refuse to take you right to the hotel itself but the hotel can come to collect you and your luggage in a golf buggy. The climbing of hills could be an issue for some but this hotel is well worth the effort. Our room was very comfortable and gave us what we wanted, including complimentary port!

Yelp
I could wax poetic about how amazing my stay here was. I booked this trip for a brief city break and came upon it on booking.com. Transport was included and so was breakfast, all for an affordable price. One thing to note is that this hotel is pretty much inside/within the Sao Jorge hotel. It is pretty high up on a hill on Alfama. Uber/Bolt will stop about 7 min away on the hill, taxis will take you to the door, and there is the 737 bus that runs around 8a - 8p that stops at Sao Jorge, and will require a bit of walking up the hill. The rooms themselves are extremely beautiful and spacious. I lucked out and got one of the king rooms on the 2nd floor over looking the courtyard. The rooms are well equipped with robes and slippers, water to drink, and some port as well. There's a cute little museum with artifacts in the cistern. Additionally, there are several non harmful peacocks roaming the grounds too. Breakfast is very good and it's a buffet with standard deli meats, cheese, yogurt, bread, cereal, coffee, etc. in the afternoon there's tea and pastries and at night there's sparkling wine. There's also an honesty bar, and 24/7 room service. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly, and will assist with helping you get a taxi. Overall I had a great time, and will be returning here when I come back to Lisbon!

Yelp
At the top of the hill in the Alfama district, Solar Do Castelo is a luxurious respite from the tourist who trod the ancient streets. Set within the outer wall of São Jorge Castle, Solar is perhaps the only hotel I've stayed at with its own museum. The hotel wraps around a courtyard featuring a tiled arch, reflecting pool, fountain and lounge chairs. Back in your room, enjoy beside cognac, robes and slippers. The breakfast buffet features many local treats, most notably, fresh pasteis de Belem. A fully-stocked honor bar in the lobby will sate any taste. Then enjoy the historic neighborhood, the castle, the fado bars, and many wonderful restaurants. Solar and the Alfama district are among my favorite destinations anywhere.
