14 Best Men's Hiking Boots for Every Type of Trail

"When we asked our favorite adventurers for their all-time favorite hiking shoes, Hoka is the brand that came up again and again. Thru-hiker and founder of Halfway Anywhere, Tyler “Mac” Fox, keeps a pair of Speedgoats handy because “they come in wide sizes, they have awesome colors, and they're surprisingly durable.” Meanwhile, author and adventurer Brendan Leonard loves them for everything from ultramarathons to ordinary day hikes. “They’re cushy, but they’re not too squishy,” he says. The newly-redesigned Speedgoat 5 is lighter and boasts more traction than ever before, making it an epic pick for loose dirt and steep, rocky trails."

Stopped in, with a bit of a time crunch, and we were quickly assisted by Brett. After stopping by REI yesterday, and being disappointed by their options for wide feet, Sole Sports was a breath of fresh air! Their wide variety was no challenge for Brett as he kept bringing available options for try on. Cheers to Sole Sports and Brett’s amazing customer service skills!

Google
Exceptional customer service! I'm not a runner and don't look like one. I prefer fashion over comfort, but I have an upcoming trip where I will constantly walk for several days. I stopped at another specialized shoe store before this and was completely ignored. I left disappointed. As soon as I walked in Jeremy greeted me and asked what I was looking for. He was so attentive and brought several shoes for me to try on based on my needs. I ended up buying a total of 4 shoes and 2 pairs of socks based on his knowledgeabe recommendations. I also couldn't decide on which shoes would go with my potential ootd. Additionally, another customer walked in while he was helping me and he helped her at the same time. There was another employee, I didn't catch his name, but I observed him also providing the same quality of attentiveness to meet another customers needs. 💯 Recommendation.

Google
extremely pleased with the service that i received. I was pleasantly surprised with the care and knowledge that Jeramy provided in helping me to select the proper shoe for my malady. I will surely recommend this establishment to anyone interested in buying the correct shoe for their foot problems

Google
I have never had customer service the way I experienced it here. I've been dealing with plantar fascitis for years, have gone through thousand of dollars worth of shoes. Nothing has helped. I found this place and Jeremy was so helpful on so many levels. He had me try on so many different shoes, helped me with my arch support, and the thing I liked most is he didn't try to sell me the most expensive which most places try to do. If you have severe pain in your feet this is the place to go.

Brian Cain

Google
I described the shoe I wanted. Jeremy brought out a pair that fit my description. I tried on four more pairs just to be sure, only to settle on Jeremy’s first recommendation. Just took them out on an impromptu 16 miler because they felt so good. It’s worth going to a shop where they know their stuff.

Mac Smith

Google
Went in to get a new pair of running shoes and Jesse was able to help me out through the whole process. Awesome guy and gave me a lot of helpful recommendations and tips as well. Best experience and very thankful for Jesse’s help as a new runner especially.

Jamie Craig

Google
Great customer service and they were in stock with several shoes in my size. Something that is hard to find

Google
I have loved this spot for many years in Arcadia! They have great knowledge around walking & running & even treating injuries! Thank you Sole for always being my first stop when I get back down to AZ!

Stacey G.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about how well these knowledgeable people take care of customers. They know their stock, they know shoes, they know what will fit, and they are incredibly patient and helpful. You can absolutely trust them to get you great quality shoes!

Yelp
Had such a great experience here this morning, when needing to replace some shoes! Gregory brought out multiple shoes for me to try on and gave me suggestions. I didn't feel like there was any kind of push to buy anything. He was pleasant and so was his coworker, who was helping another family out! lots of great options and there was even some really great options on clearance! I had no idea the store existed until I was on a walk the other day I think I will be going here in the future for any running shoes or equipment!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Nice selection. Service was great. Bought a pair of trail shoes to replace my old hiking boots. Huge improvements. Guy (Greg?) brought out a bunch of options and sizes.

Emily B.

Yelp
Holly was so helpful when it came to finding me a new pair of work shoes! She was super knowledgeable and gave me a few different options to try based on my fit preferences, feet issues, etc. I will definitely be returning here if I need a new pair of shoes in the future!

Yelp
I had such a good experience today, I can't believe I haven't been in here before. I stopped in to buy my mom some good walking shoes and get advice about what shoes would be good for her. The service and attention were above and beyond with help, suggestions, and flexibility to return if I picked wrong. There was no pressure to buy just great help. They have all the top quality brands, highly recommend!!

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Our whole family runs and we all buy our shoes there. Great, knowledgeable service and a wide selection of running shoes for everyone. I love how the staff really take their time with you to make sure you're in the right shoe. You can run on the treadmill or outside to make sure everything is just right.

Barbara O.

Yelp
Excellent service Very knowledgeable staff. Tremendous sneakers and accessories! Love my sneakers!!! Terrific fit and comfort.

Yelp
I called the store requesting some information on the day that they were closed. When they called back it went to voicemail and the employee left a very thorough, and above and beyond type message. She gave me all of the options and checked on everything for me. They are very friendly and knowledgeable and highly recommended.

Yelp
IRun! By far the most experienced staff you will find to help you get the best running shoe for your foot and gait. IRun is a small shop tucked in the NW corner by Safeway. It's staffed by mostly ultra runners (those who run races longer than the marathon). Mark (owner), James (manager) and Lisa (sales) are all 100 mile race runners. They know about running and more importantly, they know about the product they are selling you. IRun only carries shoes they believe in and would wear themselves. Their prices are fair, they always have sales, and you can return the pair if you wear them once and realize they aren't a good fit. IRun is a local, family run shop that supports community races and training. You can also go in and join them for group runs or Monday night core work. They are a fantastic group of people!

Yelp
What a fantastic experience! Received a FREE foot analysis that was emailed to me, NO PRESSURE, that included the best option for new athletic shoes. I wasn't in a position to buy that day, and they STILL showered me with customer service and shoe options! It was such a great experience, I went back a week later and did buy my shoes from them!

Yelp
I live super close to this store and I've been in to browse previously but never purchased anything. However, after taking a hiatus from running during my recent pregnancy, I realized I needed some new shoes to get me motivated again. Enter iRun for a more serious visit! The girls that helped me out were super knowledgeable and watched me walk to figure out what shoes to look at. In the past, I've worn Adidas (which they don't carry at the moment), but I was open minded this time. I've got small feet, size 6, and there wasn't much to choose form in my size during my visit, but just when I was about to give up, we found a great pair of Mizuno Wave Runners on the sale rack (50% off) that fit me perfectly - gotta love that! In addition, I bought a few pairs of fabulous socks (Feetures! brand), and I still walked out of there spending less $$ than expected. I like that iRun is locally owned and puts on some neighborhood fun runs and they also offer weekly running groups. I'm a fan and would recommend going here next time you're in the market for running shoes, apparel, or accessories.

Yelp
We were in a couple weeks ago after having a terrible experience at a larger retailer in the valley. The staff and the selection were better at this little shop! Your staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back many times and send all our friends who run. Thank you!
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
I had to return a pack because it was too big, and they exchanged it no problem! Great selection of products, and the only place in the valley that sells the Ultimate Direction brand. Not close to the house, but worth the drive for sure. Don't look at the picture, I posted the wrong one!

Yelp
My husband and I came to this shop on 7/1 for a decent pair of walking shoes. ( we haven't graduated to running yet!). We found outstanding customer service and knowledgeable employees. I'm so sorry but I forgot the names of the male and female that helped us. I want to see Leslie or Lindsey ? They were both very helpful and were very happy with our shoes. Thank you!!
google avatar

Rusty S.

Yelp
Great running shop! They have a ton of brands (pearl Izumi, Altra, Inov-8) that aren't typically found in more mainstream stores like Dick's or sports authority. They also have a ton of nutrition such as Gu and tailwind! The two people working there were extremely helpful and friendly! They gave good advice and I got a discount (I think for military) that I didn't even ask about. Great place to get some gear and advice. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
I had a very pleasant buying experience at iRun. I needed some shoes for hiking and got some good info and a great pair of shoes. As always, I love buying local and appreciate good customer service. Tiffany was very knowledgeable and helped me find a perfect pair of shoes that wasn't nearly as expensive as my last pair and there was no gimmicky sales pitch or ridiculous accessories I was guilted into buying! If you're in shape and appreciate local businesses head over to iRun!

Yelp
This review is not about running shoes/sales associate experience. It is about our experience ordering through the store. My husband & I went here to order Goodr sunglasses because we wanted to order through the store to support local business. We ordered these on 1/27 and were told it usually takes a week to 10 days for it to come in. We never heard from anyone and on 3/5 my husband called in to ask about the status. The man he spoke to said that they just came in yesterday (which seems unlikely, but maybe that's true) and that they were going to call us today. They said they found the order slip for mine, but since he didn't see them that it meant they must not have been available online. I'm disappointed because they are available online currently and regardless, no one called us to let us know that this order was taking several weeks longer than expected/mine wasn't going to come in at all and that when my husband spoke to the associate he didn't seem concerned about any of this at all and offered no solution.

Yelp
I've been training for the McDowell Mtn Frenzy 50k for the past 2-3 months and this is my go to place for Gu Energy Gel and shoes. Mark, James and the entire staff are runners. They will converse on almost any subject and are knowledgeable about their products. I purchased a pair of Pearl Izumi - Project E:Motion Trail N2 after much debating and went for a 20 miler. These shoes held up well, my feet felt great and there wasn't any of the break-in period that I occasionally have with other running shoes. I was switching over from Brooks Cascadia 9 that were purchased at REI, and the izumi's were equal if not better in cushion and support. The quote below is directly from Pearl Izumi's website: "Built to meet the demands of the world's most difficult ultras, the Project E:Motion Trail N2 gives you unmatched traction and protection with a smooth ride that will keep you flowing over miles of grueling trails." I would definitely agree, great shoes. I just picked up my bib number and tshirt for 50k yesterday. Looking forward to the race tomorrow! Many thanks to iRun Phx! I will be shopping here again soon.

Yelp
Nothing but good things to say about this recent addition to Arcadia. Friendly, experienced & knowledgeable staff, great selection of shoes and other running gear, fair prices, convenient location and a treadmill on site so you can test the goods before you buy. Bonus points because the sales person didn't try to upsell me to the most expensive shoes for my condition (flat arch) but rather gave me numerous options, explained the differences in each and let me decide. I'll be back.
google avatar

Tauhid C.

Yelp
Great place! The person there was quick to help, offered me a variety of shoes to try (but I went with the first one as they were having a sale and this particular shoe was 50% off!). He even gave me a heads up on when they meet to run drills at Arcadia High School's track. Definitely will come back next time I need something running related. Just a heads up, running shoes can be expensive!
google avatar

Jon Z.

Yelp
Came here a emergency running hat while I was on vacation and this place was a pleasant surprise. The owner was extremely helpful in picking out a hat for me and didn't pressure me to buy the most expensive options like some other elite running places do. There was a fairly wide selection running shoes but the prices were on the higher side. The location is in a shopping mall right next to CamelBack mountain so you can grab some hiking gear on the way to the summit hikes. Overall, great service and good selection of running specific apparel and shoes. Would come back again for sure.

Yelp
Great little running store! Very knowledgeable staff. Runners serving runners. What more can you ask for?

Yelp
Great local owned and operated athletic shoe store. I'm all about supporting "The Mom & Pops" :) My husband needed a particular shoe and they really performed. Had it in a week and My Honey was a very happy camper! Of course I didn't leave empty handed. We'll be back!

Yelp
Heard about iRun from a friend and was in need of some new running shoes. Stopped by on a Sunday and the owner, Mark, was extremely helpful in determining what type of shoe would best fit my running style. They had an wide variety of shoes to choose from and I tried on his suggestions. I settled on some Mizunos that were extremely light but stable and have run a few times since on them with amazing results. The store had a nice selection of clothes and accessories so I will be going back often!

Marielysse C.

Yelp
I've been missing my favorite running stores from home and this is the best one I've found in Phoenix so far. They have a great selection of shoes and gear. It is a bit on the pricey side, but monthly coupons in the mail and the excellent customer service make the trip worth it.

Yelp
Altough I didn't buy shoe from this IRUN brand, I did have bad experience with company who sells shoes using the brand name of "IRUN" , [Confused with name "IRUN", which is the real one ? ] It's been so confused to customers if one "IRUN" Brand mapped with multiple independent irreverent companies online. just google below names: (just look at) iruncompany.com www.irunshop.com "irun singapore" may you clarify in your website that other stores or names of IRUN are actually related or not. I also bought two pairs of shoes from singapore IRUN, from judging by the good reviews in the google search result ( but after quite a time before I understand the difference between IRUN and IRUN Singapore ). but actually when I do have issues with the shoe, I come to realise that they are totally different companies and It's already late. I wish to see one brand with one unique official domain / website to refer to. that stops other companies undermine certain brand name by providing low-quality service.

Yelp
Run here for all your running needs! Seriously, this shop knows how to give a runner the best experience. Between the great selection of running shoes and clothing, to the accessories and tools, this is your one-stop-shop to all things running. I just wish I had found this store when I was training for the half marathon. I would have purchased every accessories they have. Besides having a great selection of your basic running clothes and shoes, they also sell every accessory imaginable. They have an entire wall dedicated to hands-free water bottles, whether it be a backpack like pack or even one you have strapped to your hand. They sell cool waist-bands that are made locally that you can put over your workout pants to hold your sell phone, keys, etc. In summary, if you can imagine it or dream for it in regards to outdoor exercise, chances are they have it. Live and love local and support this great local running shop. If you're looking for group runs, they also offer special events for running groups as well. One day I will take advantage of one of their events!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite running specialty stores in the valley tied with tortoise and hare sports, but i-Run is about 50 miles closer. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable. It's pretty expensive but you get what you pay for. If you're just looking for trendy shoes this is not the place. They sell quality running gear and are very well informed. Prior to coming here I've been going to places like REI to get my running gear, not anymore

Tara M.

Yelp
Great place to get shoes. I Was from out town and need shoes to run in. They helped me find great shoes.

Yelp
Best running store that I have been too. Mark and everyone who works here are extremely friendly and knowledgeable on running products and can point you in the right direction. More than anything I appreciate that they are folks of who genuinely enjoy running and the running culture in around Phoenix.

Danica T.

Yelp
Wow--what a great experience in customer service! I came in the shop about 1/2 an hour before they closed and tried on about a dozen shoes. They have a great selection of shoes...some newer brands like Altra, which is a zero drop neutral shoe in varying degrees of cushion from minimal to super-cushy (I made that word up peeps...not sure what the technical term for max cushion is!). I'm not a runner, but I know my way around running shoes I think. I know I need a neutral shoe and the gent that was helping me didn't argue with me. That was not my experience at the Runner's Den where the guy helping me argued with me that I needed a stability shoe. I've had broken and twisted ankles all my life and a few years ago, the surgeon's dx'd me with a foot deformity and confirmed that yes, I do really supinate...at which point they did a calcaneal osteotomy and an arthroscopy to reattach all the ligaments and a tendon...on both feet......Anyway, I digress. Point is, I know my feet! And they don't pronate. And this guy helping me here at iRun trusted me. I appreciate that. I ended up not buying any shoes...I also have quite a large foot and they only go up to size 10 for women. But it was helpful to try on the size 11 in men's to see how they fit and which cushion level I needed. There was no pressure from the salesperson and he didn't seem to mind at all that I kept him over the closing time by 20 minutes. Just all around friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
One stop shop for all my running needs with a super helpful staff. Love that the owner, Mark, is always willing to step up to help with causes and local events.
google avatar

Kanisha S.

Yelp
This place is the best... The customer service was amazing. They spent time explaining my current shoe style and what I need for my running style. I wish I could give them 6 stars because they deserve it. I will never buy another running shoe from anywhere else.
google avatar

Yelp
Hey girls looking for good time? How about iRun? Yes that's right iSaid iRun. It is a good time. Also it is a running store. They sell running. iLike this store for shopping. iWould tell my friends to go here if iHad friends but iDont so iTold yelp. Thanks yelp for being a friend.
google avatar

Stacey P.

Yelp
I love my new shoes from iRun. I was using shoes that were pinching my toes and I didn't realize how bad because I was used to it. After Mark at iRun put me in a different type of running shoe, I'm now running toe pain free. Plus I love the tank tops I bought there too that will help me get through running in the heat of the summer.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
Best running store in Phoenix, bar none. Especially for trailrunners, but Mark and all the staff are long-time endurance runners themselves and incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and helpful about all things running. Shoes, socks, hydration packs, the latest ultralight running jacket (love it!).. they've got it all. You can even stay to watch whatever big game is on TV while you're there, or head out for a group run. Can't say enough about these guys!!
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Great store, owner was super friendly and knowledgeable about all of the shoes and accessories. I won't go anywhere else again!
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Really great selection of shoes for all types of terrain and a friendly and helpful staff!

Betty N.

Yelp
Amazing customer service. The owner and his wife were very knowledgeable about running shoes. My husband and I both purchased new shoes that day and will absolutely buy from them again. The store is in a great location and is beautifully decorated inside. It features a treadmill to try out the shoes, dressing room, and even a shower if you join them on one of their organized runs. They also have a lot of running clothes and other types of gear. I definitely recommend trying them out!!

Aaron B.

Yelp
I was very impressed by this place,. I have recently begun training for a marathon, and the book that I have been reading advises that you find a running store. So I went to this shop and I received some great education and the right shoes for me-i.e. what I needed for the type of training that I am doing. I was taken care of by Mark. He made me take off my shoes(the ones that I walked in with) and then bring in (they were in my car) the shoes that I have been running in-and he examined both (pairs) of them, and then he had me do a few "sprints" back and forth in the store,. He identified the type of shoe that I needed and then he had me try on 7 or 8 different pairs and then asked me what I thought of each pair. He listened carefully to what I said and then, based on that, he would bring me a different pair to address something that was missing in the previous shoe-eventually I found 2 pairs that felt right. Mark told me the positives of each shoe and what I could expect from each shoe. I chose the Asics Gel KAYANO's and they feel great. When he was ringing me up, I had some questions about socks that I had seen, and Mark threw in some socks and a DVD, and then gave me info. on websites that I should be looking at. I was blown away by the service and the attention, a great store! I will be back
