Where to Eat Aboriginal Cuisine in Adelaide, Australia

"This Aboriginal-owned company, which has a stall in the bustling Adelaide Central Market, sources directly from Indigenous vendors. Under founder Daniel Motlop, the team sells dry goods like bush teas, spices, and rubs, as well as a wide range of wild-harvested fresh produce, including Kakadu plums and bush apples, fruits that look like small pomegranates. Jars of pickled succulents and quandong jam line the shelves, and the refrigerated display case holds cuts of wild boar, emu, crocodile, and kangaroo. The green-ant gin is one of Something Wild’s most popular products, and the lemon-myrtle tarts, sprinkled with crunchy ants, are a mouth-puckering flavor blast." - Veronica M. Stoddart

Something Wild – Adelaide, Australia - Gastro Obscura

"It’s not hard to get lost in Adelaide’s Central Market, wandering between and admiring the rows of boundless, beguiling fresh produce. So take heed and chart your course for Something Wild, one of Australia’s premier purveyors of Aboriginal foods and beverages. While the company supplies this cuisine to restaurants and caters events, Something Wild also offers food directly to customers from its shop in the Central Market. Some of the supplier’s specialty game meats include kangaroo, emu, and camel, though Something Wild also offers significantly smaller fare—in the form, for example, of green ants. You can order those dry or in a bottle of Green Ant Gin, if you prefer. Perhaps bugs aren’t your style, but you find yourself at Something Wild during happy hour, pining for a drink? Look no further than the Wattleseed Lager, made from seeds of Australian acacia plants. In a video on Something Wild’s website, part-owner and general manager Daniel Motlop (himself Aboriginal) reminds us that “these ingredients have been harvested for thousands of years.” But the recipes concocted by the chefs at Something Wild reflect a variety of international and contemporary influences: The website gives instructions for making Wallaby Stroganoff, Kangaroo Chili con Carne, and even a Croatian-style casserole made with Australian wild boar, among many others. Founded in 2016, Something Wild also makes a priority of hiring Aboriginal employees, in an effort to ensure that spreading Aboriginal cuisine will also deliver economic benefits to Australia’s indigenous community. Making these foods “the norm,” says Motlop in the video, is ultimately “better for everyone.” None" - matthewtaub

Love their range of meats, was disappointed that they didn't have goat. I've been here a few times before. This time I bought, venison mince venison roast, diced venison, venison ribs, wild boar diced, wild boar minced, crocodile kebabs & sausages. I've never tried camel, so I bought camel mince & then I spotted camel brisket & thought heck why not & bought that too. Yes they're not cheap $$$, but a once a year splurge is okay. Alice F was very helpful & friendly.

WOW. Never realised the variety of exotic meat you can eat until I went here! Venison, camel, wild boar, crocodile, buffalo, emu & kangaroo to name a few. The Venison steaks & backstrap are the best. Have just ordered more including buffalo for the first time so looking forward to trying it. Try something unique - well worth it & you won't be disappointed. . Reasonably priced too.

I come here often and am mostly really happy with my purchases. Don't buy a rabbit though. Nearly $30 per kg and tough as nails! I love the venison steaks and emu snags. However, the young guy working is always obsessed with his phone while customers wait at both counters time and time again. CoooEeee!

I love coming here to try something different - venison salami, camel chorizo, smoked buffalo sausages, smoked wallaby, native gin garnishes, crocodile dumplings, wild boar ham at Christmas. Their sausages are amazing. I regularly buy my kangaroo here. Plus you can buy locally made gin and vodka. Staff are always helpful and happy to answer any questions.

My husband and I got some crocodile sausages and buffalo patties today. I poached the sausages for 5 min then put them in the oven at 190 for ten, OMG they tasted amazing! My husband really liked the buffalo patties too! We can't wait to come back and try the venison and the croc tail steak.. I absolutely recommend this stall! There's native condiments and herbs for sale here, also wild boar which I've never seen anywhere else.

Very confused, I called yesterday Thursday the 13th to see If buffalo was in stock. Young girl answered and said yes, there were a couple different cuts. I said ok, should I preorder or will there be enough if we come in tomorrow? She said well what cut did you want? I said rump would be OK and she said I doubt it will sell, you should be OK. Next day i send someone to go in, to be told they haven't had any in stock for awhile? I'm very very confused who I even spoke to. I know it was the same store as when I initially called she mentioned the managers name Alice, incase I did want to preorder as she would need to get manager, I only decided against it as the girl said there was plenty in stock... But clearly, I'm assuming the young girl didn't know the product perhaps? I rang to see what was going on, and me saying I spoke to someone was ignored twice. And just told it's hard to get in. I said, I'm just confused though, I spoke to someone who said you had it, no acknowledgement or anything, just a, yeah no it's hard to get. Someone there doesn't know the product, or it did sell out and someone feels guilty telling me it wouldn't. I was ready to make the prepurchase over the phone but clearly told, it shouldn't sell out as there was enough.... That wasn't the case. Hopefully the person who got the call gets spoken to.
