Where to Stay in Brisbane When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"Based in West End and noted as the closest hostel to South Bank, I describe Somewhere to Stay Backpackers as an affordable hostel that almost feels like a resort, with an outdoor pool in a leafy courtyard, a veranda with city views, yard games, hammocks, and a massive fully equipped kitchen while the rooms themselves are basic." - Matthew Kepnes

Worst Hostel Experience of My Life I stayed at Somewhere to Stay and it was by far the worst hostel experience I’ve ever had. The rooms were dirty, and basic hygiene seemed completely neglected. People openly smoked both cigarettes and drugs right outside the dorm rooms, and nothing was done about it. Security is a joke — guests constantly leave the doors open because they forget their keys, which creates a serious risk of theft. At night, the hostel isn’t even locked, so literally anyone can walk in from the street. The staff treats guests like baggage. They gave me one of the best rooms at first, only to randomly move me around several times during my stay without even asking me beforehand. To make things worse, I left a brand new beer pong table at the hostel. When I came back to pick it up, they refused to give it back and even threatened to call the police. Absolutely outrageous. This place also lacks any kind of cultural exchange — it’s mostly Italians and French people, and it’s very hard to hear anyone speaking English. If you're looking for a real backpacker experience, avoid this place at all costs.

Somewhere NOT to stay!🙅🏻‍♂️ Unless you’re unhygienic, untidy and don’t mind being around creepy pot heads then this place is not for you. We arrived and could smell cigarettes and cannabis everywhere, then went to our room to drop our bags off - no sockets anywhere. Needed to fill up my water bottle so went to the kitchen which was meant to have just been cleaned and there were dirty pots and pans everywhere with no running water on the side of the building we were on. The only good thing about the place was that they refunded us without any hassle. The lady at the desk did seem slightly confused as to why we would want to leave but nonetheless she processed our refund. In and out within under 15 minutes. I don’t often leave google reviews but this place was too bad not to!

Nice hostel to stay but lot's of strict rule where i can be. For example was hard to find for video/phone call silent place because of shouting french and spanish/argentinian. And when place found i can finish my work related call... Every single time personnel came to ask me to move somewhere else because some area was closed. Shower gel was not available in showers. Otherwise decent accommodation and would stay again.

Full of mostly long term male residents. Travelled as two females and a guy friend and felt very watched and made uncomfortable. Creepy older men staring and watching us women who are in our early 20s. No one clearly listens or enforces no drugs/ smoking signs. Left and got a refund after an hour of being there. Staff were helpful and kind to the situation. Not like other hostels I’ve stayed in prior to Somewhere to Stay. I wouldn’t recommend for younger female travellers.

Unfortunately, our stay at this hostel was a bad experience. The manager, Zack, acted completely unreasonably. He kicked us out just because we spoke for five seconds—literally, one of us was at the top of the stairs and the other at the bottom. He suddenly told us we had to check out the next day. We thought he was joking, but it was real. On top of that, he still charged us for the next night, even though we were forced to leave. The only positive thing I can say is that the cleaning staff were very kind and did a great job.

I'm not used to putting this kind of negative comment but I have to, we reserved a room with a friend for the week from Sunday to Sunday and on Saturday around 9am when we went down to go rent a car we had the pleasant surprise of being kicked out with the reason "for having made noise the day before" which is false because we were in our room at 9pm tired from work or we got up at 4am... result no more hostel and especially no car because too late on Saturday morning... We think that there was an overbooking and that the manager did not have the courage to really tell us, what courage!!! In short, something to meditate on for the next

Don’t book this Backpackers!!! There are full of long term residents and the room is dirty and messy. Also you’ll need to make your own bed. The most important thing is that they never close the room’s door! Once I close it, they said out loud ‘hey guys don’t close the door, we don’t have key’. OMG that’s your problem not mine!!! Cuz they don’t close the door, the weed and cigarettes’ smoke keeps coming in the room like all night! It’s not safe for who is travel alone, so pls pass this backpackers or you’ll regret like me 😭 The worst backpackers experience in Australia!

So really liked the vibe or where this hostel was located, it's like in a residential neighbourhood outside Brisby with some sick views! Property is cool as well... However Housekeeping has no regard or communication with reception. Had all my stuff touched moved, and put in a bin. They have little bags with plates and cutlery and they took that as well so had to get new stuff (also they make you keep it in your room, which is interesting) an they took my towel out of our on-site bathroom, and I did not get it back. Rooms had no air con, so prepare to be extremely hot. As well as rooms located upstairs are literally beside the common area, and is very small space so was like being in a nightclub. No charging spots very limited as well spaces to chill as well. Also been 3 days and they have not given me my deposit back, not the best experience here and would try one of the other 4 really cool hostels in Brisbane! It's manageable for a night or two but wouldn't spend your time or money past that based on my experience and I left!
