Where to Stay in Brisbane When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"Based in West End and noted as the closest hostel to South Bank, I describe Somewhere to Stay Backpackers as an affordable hostel that almost feels like a resort, with an outdoor pool in a leafy courtyard, a veranda with city views, yard games, hammocks, and a massive fully equipped kitchen while the rooms themselves are basic." - Matthew Kepnes

I really enjoyed my stay here! The hostel is clean, spacious, and has a great social vibe. There are plenty of common areas, which makes it super easy to meet new people, and the activities four times a week are a big plus. The pool area is lovely, and the place is cleaned several times a day, you can tell the staff really cares about keeping it comfortable. Unfortunately, the French receptionist stands out for all the wrong reasons. She is extremely unpleasant, condescending, and arrogant, especially towards female guests. Her attitude doesn’t match the hospitality standards expected from such a great hostel, and it’s a shame considering how nice and professional the rest of the staff are. The rest of the team is very friendly, welcoming, and helpful, which makes the atmosphere even better.

All staff interactions were very friendly from the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out. I stayed in a female en-suite room which was very clean and as airy as it could be with plenty of windows and multiple fans covering the room. Location is nice as it’s not directly in the centre and in West End which is a great alternative location. The set up of the hostel is very nice with lots of kitchen space so you are not on top of eachother while cooking and plenty of hang out areas. I had a great time and experience here!

I am usually not one to complain but our stay at “Somewhere to stay” hostel was terrible. Majority of the guests were smoking Marijuana day and night, therefore the rooms and corridors had a very strong smell of it. There was no intention from the staff to control or stop this. We had a private room which costed the total of €90 - for that price we had dirty bed sheets with mysterious stains on them, no aircon just an old fan in the room, therefore we were absolutely boiling. A member of staff on reception wasn’t very helpful at all during our stay, we wanted help to be allocated to our room as we couldn’t find it and was made to feel stupid. I also requested an extra pillow for comfort and it wasn’t possible. I am unsure why - again not very helpful. Also the location isn’t the best, it’s about a 30 minute walk into the central. Again, I’d like to say that I am really not one to complain, even if I am unhappy with something / somewhere, although I feel I have every need to complain about our stay here as I wouldn’t want anyone else to have the same experience we did.

In a very good position, polite staff and good environment. Could make some more improvements about the cleaning but I saw worse. I stayed in a private room with my girlfriend and was good. Very close to bus stops and good places to eat something.

Overall good enough. Wi-fi is the best! Super fast. Pillows extremely uncomfortable:( Liked the carpet on the floor tho and plenty of storage! Room extremely hot, please invest in aircons! Nowadays is a nightmare having only fans in the rooms 🙏🏻

As a solo female traveler this place did not feel safe. No AC in rooms, bad ventilation. Mixed dormatory 8 people. Poor sleep. No soap and shampoo in showers Female only shower and bathroom which is appreciated though. Always noisy Smelling of cigarettes and weed all the time. Mostly young party boys and girls from Europe going here . People flirting all over the place. If that’s your thing knock yourself out.

Great place with friendly staff and very clean rooms. Do what they can to help you and make you feel comfortable. With the cutest mascot Cadbury you couldn't ask for a better place while in a budget.

Very rude European female staff member. Informed me I was unable to stay because Australian passport is not good enough. When I went to order an uber and waited outside reception she came back out and said she was calling the police. I informed her of my ubers arrival in 1 minute and left. Very bad attitude and terrible customer service.
