20 Best Things to Do in Dubai, According to Our Local Editors | Condé Nast Traveler

"For a more intimate desert evening I avoid the big tourist camps and head to Sonara Camp, where cocktails and wood-fired burrata pizza await at a sunset lounge, dinner is served in a fairy-light‑festooned hollow carved out of the dunes, and entertainment ranges from whirling dervishes to fire shows — watching the moon rise over the dunes is the dreamiest part." - Nicola Chilton

Dubai’s Sonara Camp Is Desert Dining at Its Peak

"Set in the middle of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, this immersive desert dining experience begins with a winding Jeep transfer over sand dunes to an upper camp of tented lounges oriented for sunset. During the two hours before sunset guests are served drinks and small plates such as escabeche tuna mini tacos, smoked salmon blinis, and wood-fired burrata pizzettas, then can enjoy activities like sandboarding, soft (suction-cup) archery, volleyball, camel rides, a sunset photo session, and extensive kid-friendly sand play. After sunset groups descend to private tables beneath twinkling lights for a theatrical, family-style feast featuring grilled marinated peri‑peri chicken, chargrilled aged beef striploin with tangy red chimichurri, and the signature madfoon (seven-hour slow-cooked lamb with Yemeni spices), accompanied by Cirque Du Soleil–style performers (fire breather, balancing acts, fire dancer). A dedicated kids' area provides a buffet with mini wagyu sliders, toys, and an outdoor movie, and desserts include yuzu and raspberry sorbet with almond tuile and make-your-own s'mores. Guests can opt for only the upper-camp sunset experience or an overnight stay in a luxe tent called “The Nest.”" - Jordi Lippe-McGraw

[Deleted 1 star on account of food quality] A beautiful escape. The natural surroundings are stunning and the overall decor blends perfectly with the desert landscape, creating a luxurious yet serene atmosphere. What really stands out is the hospitality. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely go out of their way to make families feel welcome. The activities are thoughtfully designed for all ages. From sand boarding to the fire show, everything was engaging and well-organized. The movie night with popcorn was a lovely touch for kids and made the experience even more special for families. However, the food was a major letdown, especially considering the price point. Unfortunately, the snacks and dinner were quite bland and unappetising, which didn’t match the otherwise high standard of the camp. I really wish the food quality reflected the level of hospitality and overall experience Sonara Camp offers. With an upgrade to the food, this place would be exceptional.

We booked the dinner experience only at Sonara Camp. We grabbed a yalla there but didn't realise it would be challenging to hail a cab back, but luckily the staff were able to provide this service and dropped us off at the hotel. Definitely make sure you have arranged transportation if you do not opt for the company's one. The camp was so luxurious and the service was amazing. As we only went as two people, it was lot of of food for us, but we got to try a few different things. The fire show was great! Once the show ended, there was no rush for you to leave and we could roam the camp before leaving. The desert does get cooler at night, and you may want to bring a scarf or jacket in case, although I believe blankets are available if you do need it. Overall a great night and experience, and would recommend doing this at least once (lots of people were there for celebration reasons).

5 stars for: The luxury experience that you feel the moment you get picked up outside the conservatory, great team providing you with every tip and information you need to maximize your stay enjoyment. Sunset View was spectacular and it makes you want to freeze the moment. Hospitality team is so nice, friendly and generous. Shout out to Ayman who observed our preferences and made sure to offer more of what we like and gave us a personalized experience while enjoying the sunset, dinner and the show. Can’t say anything about the food other than it was a lot of great options that you won’t regret trying. Nothing came close to ordinary everything tasted great. The nest amenities made us forget that we were in the middle of the desert.

We had an amazing experience at Sonara Camp! From start to finish it was beautifully organized. The food was excellent — every dish had great flavor, and presentation was lovely. The desert setting as the sun set was breathtaking. We enjoyed all the activities: sandboarding on gentle dunes, riding camels, and a spectacular falcon show that felt immersive. The most amazing part was the fire show later in the evening — it lit up the night and was the perfect finale. The dinner (and evening snack) were both excellent, and the staff treated us so warmly. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a magical desert evening.

We booked the nest with sunrise facing for a night stay on 8 Mar 2025, it happened to be a good time, not too hot, we can enter the DDCR at 4.30pm. Love the sunset with food and drinks at the teepee. As my last profession was an events planner and I used to turn beaches to the Sonara camp experience regularly and thus decided to just dine in at The Nest that comes with the stay and not book the SONARA CAMP dinner. It turned out to be the best decision as we had time to enjoy the nest and everything that came with the nest’s package. I was impressed with the quality of canapés and freshly fired pizza, grills from the kitchen that serves only 14 nests. I didn’t even need dinner and was really full from the sunset bites. It was so exclusive and no mass of people wandering in my enjoyment of the sunset and sand dune horizon. Arriving on time gives us enough time to drop off luggage, take plenty of pictures before the rest checks in. The service team on the ground was so good with their photography skills catching the golden hour for me. Dinner was excellent with good selection of grill meat, way too much food for the Asian small eaters. Great vibes!! The room was very comfortable and glad they provided bedroom slippers, Loccitane toiletries, fluffy towels. Woke up early for sunrise and realised in retrospect, we didn’t need to pay for the sunrise view as everyone from other nest would crossed the front of our nest to get to the top of the dune for the best sunrise view. I like the turn down service where they provided throws, turn on the fire and gave us hot water bags to enjoy the evening under the stars. They need to have ironing board and iron for loan though. Breakfast was a generous spread served to our table. The food quality is excellent in my opinion, we sat next to a tree and the singing from the bulbuls was truly morning music to accompany the breakfast. Great coffee and service staff. Being first on the camel ride has its privileges, totally love the camel ride. I only had time to look up the wildlife that we shared a night under the stars with only after we depart, I freaked out a little when I saw giant green horn beetle moving on the sand at sunrise. Thankful the vipers didn’t come out to play as it was still cold then - according to the staff. Ground staff were amazing ! Once in a lifetime experience, just once. My pre-trip Enquiry on WhatsApp with the team was not the most pleasant, they skirted quite many of my questions and avoided answering questions on the weather / temperature . Eventually the temperature they provided for our packing differed from the global weather app which was much more accurate, my friend did not bring sufficient cool clothings because of this. Room service and buggy transfer is a long wait and unfortunately my friend arrived with a sprained ankle and we depended on that to move from our nest to the sunset teepee. Only reason for 4 and not 5 stars experience 💫

It was the best camping experience in my life. We liked everything - the ambience and atmosphere, excellent service, tasty food and different options availability. I had a personal attention as a gluten free person, everyone was so attentive and always reminded me what comes with gluten and without. We also noticed how clean was both places, it was surprisingly clean especially at the Sonara camp, wash rooms were so decent! I would like to thank all team of Nara camp as we stayed overnight in the Nest and Sonara camp for the all entertainment shows along with dinner! The big thanks to the manager of Sonara Nastasia for making our evening special. I had a small request for a table and she within 5 seconds understood me and made it perfect! Thank you so much! Also, we had an amazing experience with Megan at Sky Safari. She was very knowledgeable and made hours went fast and showed us such a beautiful view of the galaxies and stars. I didn’t want to leave her :) Me and my husband really enjoyed the stay. I posted it on my social media as a recommendation to visit this place! Glad we have such an amazing place to escape the city!
