In the heart of downtown Toronto, The Beverley Hotel certainly has location going for it, but unfortunately that's about it.
The Hotel: As others have noted, the rooms are very, very small, so tiny in fact, that the TV is mounted in the ceiling, and swings down (loudly) when you turn it on. But the most curious design choice is a clear glass door for the bathroom that is not frosted or sound proof in any real way. So if you're staying as a couple, you'll either have to be quite comfortable doing business in front of each other, or be prepared to vacate during bathroom time.
Other design choices are curious, such as massive, but not very useful shelving units on either side of the bed. Though, a small refrigerator is a nice bonus.
Apparently, there is room service, but at least in the room I was in, no menu seemed to be available indicating the options, prices or time when it's available. And while the front desk staff are polite, they proved to be little help when I asked a basic question about where to purchase TTC tokens (besides a subway station). I figured that would be something almost any tourist or visitor to the city would ask -- I guess not. (I found them myself at a convenience store a half block away).
The Restaurant: The saving grace of the hotel is the restaurant. I had both breakfast (twice) and dinner there, and found the portions generous, the price reasonable, and the service attentive, and very friendly. Recommended.
Summary: It almost feels like the Hotel portion of the Beverley is an afterthought. More care seems to have gone into the Restaurant, where the staff are professional and trained, and even the small details they seem to get right. The Hotel struggles from the moment you walk into your tiny room, with various elements of the service, layout, decor, making for a curious, puzzling stay. At least you'll have a story to tell people.
