I first met Sophie Hughes at her shop almost 10 years ago when I was searching for my (now) wife’s engagement ring. I was surprised and relieved to find that from the very beginning, Sophie and her team made the experience personal, smooth, relaxed, creative and fun. Knowing now that for so many people, buying an engagement ring can be the opposite — high stress, high pressure, sterile, uptight, pretentious and confusing — I’m even more grateful all these years later. Sophie doesn’t just make beautiful jewelry — she’s also precise, super knowledgeable, creative and thoughtful. Somehow, she’s laid-back enough (and generous enough with her time, expertise and talent) to make you feel like you can ask any question along the way to finding the perfect piece. And talk about someone who knows and loves their craft -- I've literally walked by and seen Sophie in a welding mask... or those cartoonish multi-lens magnifying goggles... tinkering or hammering on an anvil... styling/staging photo shoots... etc., etc., etc.. Seeing that level of dedication is a reminder that this isn't just a shop, and she’s not just selling jewelry. It’s appreciably more than that.
Lastly: my wife's favorite earrings are from Sophie Hughes. A few years ago, one of them was lost during a road trip when we stopped for lunch in a little town 3-4 hrs from Boston. When she realized one was missing, we drove back as soon as we could. We retraced our steps through restaurants and shops... went to the town hall and police department to see if it was in a lost and found... and even knocked on the front door of a woman whose tag sale we had pulled over at (and then combed through her whole front yard). No dice. The following Christmas, I asked Sophie if I could possibly buy just one of the earrings. Not only was she willing to make this oddball request work -- but she also had me bring in the remaining earring so she could make a replacement that would be a perfect match. Thanks again, Sophie & Team, for everything over the years.
