Just returned from a 3-night stay at Hotel Sorel City Weissenstein, and overall, it offers a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the charming historical center of St. Gallen, which is just a pleasant walk away. The hotel is situated in a wonderfully quiet neighborhood with minimal traffic, ensuring peaceful nights. While street parking is available, be aware it comes at a premium of CHF 2.50 per hour, 24/7. The hotel does offer parking for CHF 20 per day, though these spots cannot be reserved in advance.
We were particularly impressed with the modern and well-decorated rooms. We opted for the Superior Plus room, and it lived up to its name – spacious and remarkably soundproofed, contributing to a restful stay. The hotel staff were consistently friendly and proficient in both German and English.
The breakfast buffet offered a decent selection, covering both savory and sweet options. While it provided a good start to the day, it didn't quite reach the level of "exceptional," especially considering the price point. It was nice to see a few items prepared onsite, such as the scrambled eggs, bacon, and Bircher muesli.
However, our experience was significantly marred by a major discrepancy regarding the kitchenette advertised for the Superior Plus room. This was a key factor in our decision to book this specific room (and hotel) over others that offered amenities like free parking or spa facilities. The expectation of having a kitchenette, given the hotel lacks an on-site restaurant, was a significant draw for us, offering the flexibility to prepare some of our own meals.
Upon arrival, we were informed that using the kitchenette was forbidden for stays shorter than 5 nights and would incur an additional charge of CHF 100. This crucial information was nowhere to be found on the hotel's website during the booking process. We found this policy to be not only inconvenient but also quite misleading and, frankly, dishonest.
In conclusion: Hotel Sorel City Weissenstein offers comfortable, modern accommodation in a great location with friendly staff and a satisfactory breakfast. However, potential guests booking the Superior Plus room specifically for the kitchenette should be aware of the unadvertised restrictions and additional costs for short stays. This lack of transparency significantly impacted our overall satisfaction and is something the hotel should address to ensure fair and honest communication with their guests
