How to Plan a Trip to Parma, Italy

"I love Sorelle Picchi because you can usually get a table without a reservation; they serve typical Parma food in an atmosphere that feels like an old country house, and their torta fritta is unbeatable." - Laura Itzkowitz Laura Itzkowitz Laura Itzkowitz is a writer and editor based in Rome. This is the first time in Italy we've experienced literal bad food. Some good but some down right not edible. The pasta was ok but the main dishes was just rushed and tough. We got both the tasting menus and the sliced meat antipasto starter was hard and not good. This is Parma this should be the best! I would have given the food a more stars if it weren't so expensive. This was one of the more pricey spots. Quality should come with price! Part of the desert was also so dry you couldn't chew it. Very disappointed we chose this place on our last night in Parma. Service was fine. But we made it clear that some of the food wasn't edible and they didn't seem to care or understand.

This was the best restaurant we visited during our trip to Italy (Bologna, Modena, Parma, Venice, Riccione). The food was excellent, and the elderly Waiter was incredibly kind. He was the only one who served Coke with ice in a glass, and he opened the wine at our table, letting us taste it first, just the way it should be done. We were absolutely charmed by this place ❤️

Google
I received a recommendation for a restaurant that truly lived up to the hype. The pasta was delicious and cooked to perfection, and the unique flavor of the parmesan cheese from Parma obviously, really elevated the dish. Additionally, the service was excellent and attentive, which added to the overall positive experience.

Amazing staff, they were full, but we didn’t wait a second, so polite and pleasant we’ll eat there every time we are in Parma, really recommend Food is too good to describe. Thank you for the experience we had it was amazing.

Google
Great place to eat in Parma! I had the crispy duck leg and my husband tried the pork cheeks in Lambrusco — both were absolutely spectacular. We also shared the Parmesan tasting plate with three different types of Parmesan cheeses, which was a real highlight. Highly recommended!

The food here is outstanding. It's so good that I went twice in the two days that i visited Parma. The lasagna is put of this world. The iberico pork pluma steak will take you past flavor town and drop you and your best taste buds in a whole new flavor country. The Parmesan vertical is a master class in Parm and probably one of the reasons you decided to come to Parma. The meat board of Parma gold is also a MUST have. The sweet potato tortelli 🔥 the pork cheeks 🔥the Parmesan FLAN????? Stupid 🔥the trio of Polentas including BLACK TRUFFLE polenta???? 🤯 Too bad the service is so hit or miss. This place rightfully gets SLAMMED and the food comes out at a leisurely pace so don't come here in a hurry. The staff did their best to accommodate my lack of Italian language skills. Some of the staff are fantastic and some honestly just kinda suck at their job or dont care. Hope you get the good ones! Also definitely call ahead and make a reservation.

Google
Overall, the restaurant was reasonably adequate, but over priced for adequate fare. We noticed that Sorella offered the same menu selections (and pricing) as two neighboring restaurants (Tribunale and Panino d’ Artista), the same ‘gift wrapped’ bread, tableware…. We asked and were told that the three share a kitchen, though d’ Artista also offered a sandwich menu. Would I go back? Nope. As food special as is Parma and the Emilia-Romagna region, there is nothing special at Sorella Picchi.

Google
Fantastic food at a very reasonable price. Take the opportunity to eat something unique from Parma, try something other than the famous ham and cheese, would be my suggestion; so much of the other cured meats are worth trying! Much of the staff spoke English well enough to help us, which was appreciated because our Italian is still not so great. If you like vegetables, the flan di zucchine was incredible, delicate and topped with paper-thin slices of fried onion. The torta fritta (fried bread puffs) was warm and tasty, while not greasy at all. Best meal I've yet had in Italy!

Yelp
This place was fantastic! We sat outside for lunch after an afternoon wonder through Parma and was for sure the, Oh I Get It Now - Italy Has The Best Food moment of our trip. We had spent the 3 previous nights in the country sleeping off jetlag and eating at the agriturismo, but now we were city-ready and man this place did not disappoint. We had the 3 kinds of parm (don't bother, just get the 24 year, red cow - it's the BEST), and the "Gold of Parma" to start - 3 types of cold cuts - all very delicious. A bottle of Lambrusco, the risotto and tortelli 3-ways. Everything was FANTASTIC - including the service. I took off 1 star b/c the bees/wasps and flies were outrageous and very distracting - I'm not sure what they could do to improve this, but they really should try. Don't miss this spot if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
With 5 days in Milan we decided to take a 1 day trip to Parma so we cold truly get some fresh ham and cheese. We missed all of the tours that all seem to start at 8am so we were in search of a restaurant with a fresh selection. Although everywhere in the area looked great this restaurant had a big deli in front and a wine bar to the right, it also had the big kind of covered outside area in the street that truly makes you think of a trip to Italy. The menu is big and had options for everyone. The prices are great! We started with a bottle of their sparkling house white whine. It was refreshing with a light dry fruity taste. We then moved on to what we came for: Parma ham, other cured meats, and fresh Parmesan cheese. The cheese.... It was dry, a little salty but melt in your mouth. Seriously some of the best I have had, it was served with a chutney and was only $4 for the plate. We then moved onto the biggest plates of meat we have ever seen. All delicious and light. Think so thinly sliced that you can eat triple :) For entrees we had a variety but 3 of us had different risottos. I had the Lumbrusco which came out purple (cooked with red wine)- it had a good taste and the risotto was cooked nicely. My wife had the handmade tagliatelle which was perfectly on spot with a light cream sauce, some chopped ham and asparagus. We skipped desert because we were stuffed. Awesome experience and great prices. Perfect way to relax over lunch in Parma!

Yelp
What appeared to be a touristtrap turned out to be one of the most memorable meals during our two week stay in the north of Italy. The waiter didn't speak english which lead to a misunderstanding but all was forgiven when the correct order came. We tried a starter in a cupcakeshape with rich truffle flavour. For maincourse we had the pumpkintortellini with a hint of amaretto (tortellini di zucca) and a risotto. The Lambrusco wine - by the name of Otello - was beautiful and the food was so amazing that my company had to summon me back from food ecstasy.

Yelp
Food really really really really really good. Many courses based on italian taditions (try Cappelletti in brodo). Not cheap but in the historic center of Parma one of the best restaurant you can desire. In the same building is linked to a butcher store: try it for your home made courses, you will find anything you need. Again, not cheap but try it and you'll be not disappointed. Staff very friendly and always available to spend some words on how they made and cook foods.

Yelp
Nice little place where you can sit outside and eat good local food. We over ordered since we were only 2. The Parma ham trio was very good as well as the parmigiano. They should just offer it together. The killer was the fried dough shaped like ravioli!! Omg. I ordered the saffron pasta. Incredible!!! Daughter got the green ravioli with creamy ham which was not very tasty. Just too much ham and too salty. The salad was basically crudités which was okay and nicely presented. Would recommend. The best part was the trash truck collection which went right by us. LOL

Yelp
Disappointing and tourist trap. Food was good (not outstanding by any means though) but disappointment was in their dishonesty. There's a cover charge of 3 Euro pp, which they said everybody does it. Not true, been in Italy 2 wks now...not once have we been charged a cover pp. They charged 3 Euros for "semi-frizzante" water from their own tap system yet the menu says San Pellegrino. Essentially, 3 Euros for tap water. A storm was coming in and we asked if we could sit "inside" where there were many open tables, but they lied and said all were reserved. 5 of the 8 tables remained empty the entire time. Our food got cold quickly because of the cool breeze. When we inquired about the charges they weren't receptive. Dishonesty will always result in a negative review from me.

Yelp
One of the best Italian food I ever had. Food is OMG. We had two lunches in row in two days stay in Parma. Its pretty humble look. We were there in winter, there was almost no tourist. It was all locals in the rest. Pick any dish you fancy, it is all great.

Yelp
We chose this restaurant based on the two positive reviews, and were very disappointed with our meal and experience at Trattoria Sorelle Picchi. The food was unexceptional. This being a region in Italy that is renowned for its food, this restaurant is subpar to its peers. The service was very poor. The wait staff were very unhelpful and unfriendly. The staff were not willing to explain menu items, and were annoyed at responding any questions we had. Also note the restaurant charges 5 euro per person for cover charge , nothing is included in this charge. For a table of six, you will be paying more than 40 USD for nothing except have sat at the table. At other restaurants this is equivalent to two bottles of wine. For an expensive restaurant we did not receive the service or quality of food we expected. I really regret not going to another restaurant as the food in the region really is exceptional, and too bad one dinner was wasted here.
