🌊🛶 40 km. 3 Days. One Unforgettable Birthday Adventure. 🛶🌊
In July 2025, I celebrated my 40th birthday in the most meaningful way I could imagine—by paddling the Waitukubuli Sea Trail along Dominica’s rugged coastline with the Soufrière Outdoor Centre, led by the incredible Wes.
Over three days, we covered nearly 40 km by kayak, carrying all our essentials as we journeyed from cove to cove. Each night, we were welcomed into rustic, locally owned guest houses—beautifully set, full of character, and serving delicious meals that felt especially rewarding after long days on the water. The ambiance, warmth, and sense of place made the experience even richer.
As a Caribbean geologist, this trail had been on my bucket list for years. There is simply no better vantage point to appreciate Dominica’s coastline and geological outcrops than from the sea. Still, nothing could have prepared me for the dramatic coastal vistas or the up-close views of volcanic features unique to the island. Dominica boasts the highest density of volcanoes per square kilometer in the world, and seeing this raw geology unfold from a kayak was both humbling and awe-inspiring.
While I consider myself a seasoned hiker with moderate fitness, this was my first time undertaking such an extensive multi-day kayaking expedition. That said, Wes’ top-quality kayaks, meticulous preparation, and calm, encouraging guidance made all the difference. Thanks to his leadership, I was proud to complete the full three-day trail—something I’ll carry with me for life.
I cannot recommend the Waitukubuli Sea Trail enough—not just for the physical challenge, but for the rare opportunity it offers to truly experience the wild, majestic beauty of Dominica from a perspective few ever see.
If you’re looking for an adventure that feeds the body, mind, and soul—this is it. 💚
