Had a private room but it had a funny smell and we couldn’t open the window since there was no net and bugs were coming in. Also the dryer upstairs was broken so there was only one dryer available which made it a bit tricky but staff made sure to take out the dry clothes from it if no one claimed them. Bathroom was also okay but not the best. Also thin walls so easy to hear everything from outside the door. Highlights was the staff which was very nice (one of them offered me from his personal milk cartoon for my morning coffee) and location which is very close to the cable car But other than that it was a bit of a rough stay

Really great hostel nearby a lot of mountain activities and onsen nearby. Living areas are clean and neat. Easy to meet other travelers. The dinner and breakfast are made with love. Everyone that works here is always joyful and the atmosphere is beautiful because of them.

What a lovely place too stay! The hostel is close to many other bigger hotels, but I liked this more cause you come easily in touch with the other visitors. The staff is English speaking and the welcome is very warm and stayed like this during my stay. They help and serve you with all your needs and I appreciate that! The bunk beds are equipped with heating, for the colder months and a power socket at the bed with a small lamp. Do not expect the best shower, instead go for a Onsen with a discount in the neighbouring hotels (¥600/800 without or with towel). The breakfast costs you ¥500 and will be prepared the evening before, so whatever time you get up, the breakfast is ready to take along with you. Some happy text is added as well, it makes it personal, I liked it! For dinner you have one option, that's curry in a normal or big portion (¥1200 I believe so). Again, what they do they do it good, as well the curry is good! When coming by car, there is a limitation in parking spots in front of the property. The common room is equipped with a couch, dining tables and fridge and microwave is available to use as well. I'll come back for sure when I want to visit the Daisetsuzan NP!

Had a really pleasant stay here which helped make my visit to Kurodake really lovely. The staff understand English well, and try to provide the best information they can... the atmosphere is friendly and even lively in the evenings. There was little to complain about, everything so well equipped, except maybe the shower room not having more outlets, but there are onsen everywhere here.

A perfect starting point for exploring the Daisetsuzan national park. The staff was very helpful and patient with my questions both before my arrival as well as during my stay, giving me recommendations for hikes, local onsens and helping me out with some last minute adjustments to my travel plans. I was also impressed by the quality of the dinner (and the size of the portions). Discount coupons for the onsens in the neighbouring 4-star hotels are a nice bonus. The community space on the first floor is very cosy and invites talking to other guests. I would definitely come back again in the future.

The previous night we stayed in a different place with very indifferent service. So staying here was like heaven by comparison. The staff are super friendly and the owner Youhei was very accommodating he helped us immensely and they answered all our questions regarding the town and nearby area. Because we are a family of 4 we had a few requests. The common room was warm and welcoming. The staff recommended we have the curry for dinner so we tried it and it was great value for money. After dinner we watched some fireworks from just out front of the hostel. Finally when we checked out the staff wished us well and we felt very welcome. After leaving I realized I left my raincoat in the entrance room and th staff organized to send it to me. So I am more than pleased with the service. The location is great and the value for money was great. Highly recommended considering all the other places we stayed at in Hokkaido.

The most important thing I want to note about this hostel is that it is CASH ONLY payment. Even if you book by Booking.com or another reservation website. The hostel has no way to accept credit card payments at all. I did not know this before I arrived and was definitely surprised.||||Hostel is old but clean and well maintained. Breakfast and dinner are available for a low cost and there is a small fridge for guests to use. You can also use the kitchen as needed. There is no grocery store in Sounkyo, only convenience store so if you want more, grab food before you arrive.||||It's 5 minutes to the Ropeway and 1.75 to Asahi-dake. The main part of town is cute but there is not much there, even for restaurant options.||||Hostel has good on-site parking but does fill up fast. But staff will help you arrive the cars so it works for everyone. Staff is very nice and most speak good English.||||Beds are not very comfortable but my back doesn't love the Japanese style. Beds are big though which is nice.||||The shower room has three stations but it's all public and shared (for each sex) so could be a party in the shower room. Bathroom is fine as well.||||Building itself is really dated but for a short stay, it's an overall good hostel option in Sounkyo. If I'm in that area or looking for a hostel near there, I would stay again.

This place is the best! Definitely recommended! I arrived without a reservation and the place was booked out. Yohei, the owner, was kind enough to offer me a tent for the night. He also helped me call an airline and spoke Japanese with their customer service and eventually fixed the issue I had. The atmosphere is great, everything is clean and Yohei is the best.
