On the Grid : South Bend Civic Theatre

"South Bend Civic Theatre was founded in 1957 by two Notre Dame graduates who wanted to instill the importance of community theater in the community and offer an avenue for potential actors and performers to grow their skills in South Bend. In 2007, the Civic Theatre moved into its current home in downtown South Bend in what was formerly a First Church of Christ Scientist and has become a keystone of South Bend’s art community. The Civic Theatre now puts on over 125 performances a year in two theaters, the 209-seat Wilson Auditorium and the 80-seat “black-box” Warner Studio Theatre. Over the next 10 years, the theater will put on 10 of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning post-manufacturing “Rust Belt” stories, and you can bet we'll be in attendance." - West.SB

Spectacularly talented local theatre! This is a very active theatre averaging more than a show a month. Most shows are a two weekend run, Friday through Sunday. The Friday and Satuday shows are in the evening with Sunday being a matinee. We really enjoy the stage productions here and have been attending regularly for over three years. We take advantage of the Flexpass promotions, which provide savings on ticket costs. Long overdue review. Google won't let me give ten stars.

My daughter (5) attended theater camp for two weeks (9-12 most days with the final two days going until 3pm). They ended with performing Pinnochio for the public and we loved watching her. The directors requested one of us be backstage for each of the 3 shows (Friday evening and Saturday morning) because of her energy and incident of hiding from the directors for the last 5-10 mins of a camp day 🤦‍♀️. So if your child is a handful maybe wait another year but it was otherwise an amazing experience and the kids did such a great job. I actually enjoyed the fact that I got to see her new friendships backstage. It was a treat because she normally doesn’t feel like talking about camp when she gets home. Shout out to everyone who made my daughter feel welcomed and cared for!!! A truly great cast of characters ☺️

I went to Once upon an island on March 1st. From the time I walked in, I was greeted with a smile and asked if anything needed to let them know

I hosted a CD listening party for the Flint Cavaliers of Flint, Michigan. The Civic Theater provided a great hall for the event, and the staff was second to none. There are many venues within the one building, and I was able to choose the right space for my event. The Civic Theater is also equipped with the state of the art sound and light, basically everything you need for an event. I really appreciate the professionalism that is standard for their clients. I will definitely use this place again.

Yelp
A beautiful venue for performances by community actors, both children and adults, with a dedicated and talented staff. A gem of South Bend.

Yelp
Once the Bastion of grassroots performing arts in the Bend, SBCT seems to have lost its way over the last couple of years. The shows have gotten safer, while the ticket prices no longer reflect the economic realities of the 2011 Midwest. This is contrary to the Theatre's 30-year history of bringing affordable, mind-blowing Art to the community that supports it, but is hopefully just a symptom of growing pains and the recent loss of their founding father and former Executive Director. However, and most importantly, the most talented and dedicated Theatre geeks in all of north-central Indiana give voluntarily of their time, blood and tears to keep this community treasure alive. If you catch the right production, you surely will be moved-- not only by the onstage goings-on, but by the passion of the volunteers as well.

Yelp
The South Bend Civic Theatre is a lovely, intimate venue. Since the Wilson Theatre within seats only 200 patrons there isn't a bad seat in the house. I had the pleasure of attending their performance of Jesus Christ Superstar and they did not let the limitations of the small stage affect the production. Beautifully done! I hope to return soon.

Yelp
The best entertainment venue in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. Just saw "The Seafarer", and it was meticulously done with superb directing and awesome acting. Visit their web site to see coming attractions, and check out the kid's programs. They are top-notch. The future looks bright for the arts in the South Bend area, thanks in large part to the South Bend Civic Theatre. http://www.sbct.org/?c=schedule&i=2011&start=5
