"This state museum looks at the maritime history of South Carolina through a local prism; via a selection of artifacts, from wooden dugout canoes dating all the way back to the Civil War-era to scale models of sailing boats, you'll get to understand how the museum (and you) ended up here. The building itself is just two stories, and whether you're a buff or a curious novice, you can easily cover the exhibits in an afternoon. Don't forget to snag some maritime-themed jigsaw puzzles and a t-shirt on your way out." - Paul Oswell

This is a great small museum, free entry, and any monetary donations are welcomed. It has plaques, replica boats, a history of different ships, their purpose, and who owned them. They also have actual ship parts and wreckage. The only thing I would add is that the women's bathroom requires the mirror to be fixed, the mirror is too high, and it doesn't work for short people. Picture provided by my wife.

It’s an outstanding museum with great artifacts and exhibits. Right at the center of Front street and free entry. Worth every donation you can spare.

We spent some time in Georgetown today in this museum and having excellent time. It's a self-guided museum. It's free! But please leave a small token of appreciation to help cover the cost. Lots of wonderful maritime history artifacts really interesting time there.

Google
Limited hours but still an interesting opportunity to learn about the maritime history of this port city. The museum opened in 2011 and is a collection of artifacts and memorabilia and artwork. There's quite a lot here including ship models, paintings and even a lens from the North Island lighthouse. Entry to the museum is free (donations appreciated) and there is street parking. I enjoyed my time at this stop.

Google
Lovely free maritime museum in Georgetown, SC. I spent about 1 hour here reading all of the plaques and viewing the exhibits. They have a stamp for the Georgetown Lighthouse for those who have a lighthouse passport book. They also have a small gift shop with a few drinks for sale on those hot SC summer days. Restrooms are available on-site. Parking is on the street.

The South Carolina Maritime Museum is an ok museum. There are some nice life stories on wallboards and upstairs there are displays providing a lot of information about the transatlantic slave trade. Georgetown smells really bad because of a paper factory in town.

Very educational and interesting museum. Divided into categories, so you can spend more time on what interests you. *Free* Nice gift shop area with decent prices.

Google
Free entry, very interesting, good air conditioning, not too big, probably 20-60 minutes depending on how much time you spend reading all the exhibits. This place is great. If you have any interest in early American commerce, the ocean, or South Carolina's role in the early (1700s on) lumber industry, it is the place to visit.

Yelp
Great small museum to discover the sea life of the coastal lands. Good for children of all ages: 4-84! Go. You won't regret your visit, especially if you feed the sting rays.

Yelp
Awesome museum of the nautical history of the town and port. Very well done using artifacts, models, photos, artwork and story boards.

Yelp
I was driving home to Charleston and decided to check out Georgetown's historic district and found this museum there. Free...so why not? Inside were 2 floors with historical info on maritime life in SC, primarily in Georgetown area. There are numerous model ships on display, and lots of information on sailing vessels that were significant to the area. I enjoy seeing and reading this kind of stuff, especially to see how it use to be 100+ years. I did not realize there is still a lighthouse in the area you can visit. But it is accessible by boat, so maybe next time. The museum is a must see in Georgetown to take in some good SC and US history.

Yelp
We had no idea what to expect from a free museum, but it was awesome. The BF and I are sailors, of a small boat, so all of the Charleston Maritime history was amazing to see. They even have an ancient canoe made from the Bald Cypress tree on display. Great place to get souvenirs too. The drive through the small town, to get to the museum, is also a treat for us So Cal people.

Yelp
A lot of information here and very interesting model boats. They have a small gift shop as well and very clean restrooms.

Yelp
An excellent piece of SC history. It has a very modern feel to the interior while still retaining the history. The exhibits are unlike any thing else you'll see in SC. Pretty refreshing. The collection is also ever expanding. Location is prime. I've never been to the sock burning in the Spring, but that looks cool. Also, you can't beat the staff's enthusiasm for maritime history!

Yelp
Stopped in to see how the Maritime Museum of South Carolina was laid out and while the fact that Georgetown is a very old city, it seem to focus solely on it and not other ports of South Carolina. Still some really great and interesting facts about the port and the city in general. Well worth stopping in for a nice stroll around and taking in some air conditioning on a hot SC day. THe models of the ships where also very impressive, but the maps of the area along with the photographs really made it a fun time. Stop in and drop in a donation or buy from the gift shop.

Yelp
Stopped in for a bit of local history, and came away quite impressed.. Explains the significance of Georgetown and why it was such a thriving place of commerce.. Many hand build model ships of SC historical significance on display..
