A Guide to the Columbia River Gorge, the Pacific Northwest’s Best Kept Secret | Condé Nast Traveler

"Perched in Underwood, South Hill Vineyards felt like a slice of New Zealand in the Gorge—cool-climate grapes, Adirondack chairs, and killer Mount Hood views make it an idyllic spot for tasting." - Jessica Chapel

Believe me, I've been to more wineries than I can count. Hands down, South Hill has the best views. They were also able to accommodate our group of 8 on very short notice. I will definitely get the word out, because I hadn't even known about this winery before this weekend. Looking forward to returning when I am in the area. For reference, it's appx 15 minutes from Hood River across the bridge.

This place is a gem! I’m so glad we took the short drive from Hood River over to South Hill Winery, it did not disappoint. Visited on a Friday in late June when the weather was spectacular, and it was pretty quiet. It offers the best view of the Gorge from a winery, hands down. Our host, Trish, was amazing with the perfect balance between giving our small group space and being attentive. She was also incredibly knowledgeable, especially if you're interested in the history of the winery and its owners. We sat outside at a covered picnic bench with a breathtaking view, enjoying a few glasses of wine and a tasting flight. We didn’t want to leave, but we did end up taking home two bottles on our way out. Overall, a 10/10 experience. I’d highly recommend it to anyone touring the wineries around Hood River—make the quick drive to South Hill!

I was in love with South Hill from the first time we visited. The views of Hood are unparalleled, Trish is a delight, and I have yet to meet a wine of theirs that I do not like. The atmosphere is unpretentious and inviting, while Trish is extremely knowledgeable and attentive, the combo makes you want to stay the whole afternoon. We love it so much we became members!

Had my first visit yesterday and Becky and Trish gave us 5 star service with lots of education about the winery. Wine was tasty and seating cozy on a rainy day.

Google
What a view, the wines were delicious, kind and attentive service. I am surprised this gem isn't more crowded, which makes this place extra special. We sat on the patio with our dog and soaked up the sun. Probably my new favorite especially since I typically go to the Willamette Valley which any more has to be planned with reservations. Tell a friend but also keep it a secret 😉

I visited this winery twice in one weekend. I had the red tasting and my husband and I loved each sample. We had a hard time picking and ended up buying 3 bottles. They have some snacks there that you can eat with your wine and they have an all red tasting or a tasting that has some whites and reds. Highly recommend. The outdoors area is beautiful with seating facing Mt Hood.

Google
Had a wonderful tasting on an early Friday afternoon. $15 for 3 whites and 3 reds. There was only one other group there to enjoy the amazing views. The owner served use herself and gave us a lot of background on the winery. Her husband gave us a sampling of a rose they had just filtered before fermentation. I’m thinking of going back next year to see how it turned out. I liked the pinot noir best and bought a bottle. They only have snacks like nuts and chips.

Google
Officially now my #1 favorite winery in the Gorge (and I've been to most). The view is unlike any other in the area, as is the uniqueness and elegance of their wines. I almost immediately joined their wine club... which is extremely reasonable in comparison to the quality and refinement of their product!

Yelp
This winery is a MUST! The views are amazing!!!! The service is amazing!!!! The wine is amazing!!!! We went on a Sunday around 3 and it wasn't busy at all - there's outside and inside seating if you're wanting ac. The view of Mt. Hood was breathtaking and so beautiful to see. They offer binoculars to see the mountain and the city below. The staff was very knowledgeable and so friendly.

Yelp
The service from Trish was amazing! I adore wild fermentation. I liked all the wines but my fave was Pinot noir & Cabernet. I didn't try the whites. And the view!!! Too windy this day to sit outside but if it wasn't you should

Yelp
Oh my goodness!!!! We were in town for a wedding and wanted to try some wine while we were on the Washington side... We found this place and decided to give it a try and boy am I glad we did! We arrived and were greeted promptly and given a brief introduction and tour of the place. I can't remember her name but she was so kind and so informative! We did a tasting and sat outside to one of the best, most beautiful views I've ever seen. The wines were delicious, the service was incredible and we'd have gone back for the view alone! We bought a few bottles because everything was so good! We loved it and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
The drive up to South Hill Winery is beautiful. The road takes many twists and turns past forests, vineyards, other wineries and sneak peaks of the river, but nothing prepares you for the expansive views of the Columbia River from this vantage point up on the hill. It will take your breath away. One of the best views in the Gorge! Located at an elevation of 6,100 feet, South Hill Winery is the highest commercial Winery in the U.S. This two generation family spent many years growing grapes and making wine in New Zealand then founded South Hill in 2006. They chose this location because they wanted a cool climate to grow their grapes, a climate similar to New Zealand, plus access to vineyards that grow Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The Columbia Gorge met both requirements. The naturally fermented vintages and all the thought and care that goes into their wine making process is evident. After trying Viognier grapes recently, it has become my favorite of the whites and South Hill Winery produces one of the best. I also loved their Cabernet Sauvignon for its full body and fruit essence. Although the climate is cool, the hospitality is very warm and inviting. The tasting room, located on the same property as their working vineyard, has an open, industrial vibe. It's bright and light with a small cozy bar area, too. But it's those bright red Adirondack chairs outside that call my name! With unmatched panoramic views of the Columbia River below, they beckon you to grab a bottle of wine, take a seat and relax surrounded by nature at its finest. The tasting menu is a combo of white and red wines and is just $15. If you decide to buy a bottle afterwards, you get $5 credit towards the bottle purchase. Wine by the glass is not available. Just a 15 minute *GORGEous* drive from the Hood River Bridge, South Hill Wines needs to be on your must visit list. Seriously, the view alone is worth it but when you add in the delicious wines and warm hospitality, South Hill is indeed a worthy destination. South Hill is open April through October from12pm-5pm on Friday's, Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations are only required for parties of 6 or more. Dogs on leashes are welcomed outside.

Yelp
Wine lovers, this winery is a must visit! South Hill Winery is a jewel! Amazing views, terrific wines and Trish was absolutely lovely! If there is a winery in Oregon that offers more beauty, I have not found it. They also offer case discounts and reduced tasting fees if you purchase wine. This will be a stop for us on our Oregon vacations. Kudos to South Hill Winery.

Yelp
Excellent wines! Our favorite experience was a chance to taste fresh Pinot Gris grapes served by the lovely owner. ...if you're a chocolate lover, it's worth buying the chocolate port. Oh, and the view of Mt. Hood is spectacular!

Brent R.

Yelp
We had a really good time tasting two different wine flight selections while enjoying the stunning view and learning about the winery and wines from the hostesses and owner. 10/10 would recommend and we look forward to returning

Yelp
Our family had a wonderful visit! The sun was shining, the mountain had snow on it and the wines keep getting better and better!

Yelp
This spot has really wonderful wines, a friendly mom and son duo running the show, and a view that would be very difficult to beat. I especially loved the Sauvignon Blanc, and the whiskey barrel aged Cab. Highly recommend.

Erica A.

Yelp
I love family owned businesses. Came from out of town and absolutely loved every wine on the tasting list, even wines i usually do not like. Their Malbec was my fav which i bought a bottle of. And not to mention the Amazing view, and serenity of the experience. By far the best winery experience. The owner answered all our questions and was so knowledgeable. I couldn't recommended this winery more!

Preston P.

Yelp
Found this by chance & went on a whim. The wines were terrific, and the service was amazing. Very friendly and nice atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Once you get up here you will never want to leave. it's the most beautiful, peaceful place with a view to die for. We were the first to arrive today and were greeted by Spencer who led us to the perfect spot. He and his parents came from New Zealand and own this amazing winery With a very nice selection. To top it off...our battery died and he gave us a jump. Service above and beyond!

Andrew R.

Yelp
Could be the best view of the gorge! The wine is very enjoyable. Possibly the best viognier I've ever had. Really enjoyed the naturally fermented vintages! Something I don't think you often see executed well. Very welcoming environment. Highly recommended!

Katie Z.

Yelp
I absolutely love this winery! It is way up on the hill (at 1850') and off the beaten path, but it is completely worth the trip. We got to try 8 different wines and every one was fantastic. In addition to great wine, they have an unparalleled view of the Columbia River and Mt. Hood. South Hill will be a regular stop on all future trips to the Gorge. I can't wait for them to have a wine club.

Julia R.

Yelp
Best winery views in the gorge! The staff is amazing and their white wines are especially great.
