3 Best Day Trips from Las Vegas | Condé Nast Traveler

"If you have nine hours to devote to a high-elevation climb in the Spring Mountains with world-class views, this is the one. It's a tough ascent up the eight-mile trail that winds through quaking aspen and crosses a timberline, ending in a spectacular view from the summit of Charleston Peak. The Mount Charleston Peak south loop hike takes you to the highest point around Las Vegas, which is 11,916 feet. (If you thought you had a great view from the High Roller , consider this.) You'll be above 10,000 feet in an alpine environment for over half the hike. History buffs can look for the wreckage of a CIA plane that was transporting workers to Area 51 to work on the U-2 spy plane in 1955. (There's a memorial to them at the visitors center.) This is the toughest hike in the area, but it's worth it." - Andrea Bennett

Such a beautiful hike. The high elevation is tough, but I’m not even a hiker and got through 4 hours just fine. 🌟

Must see if in Las Vegas area. Saw mule deer and burros in area during summer. The rock / mountain formations are very impressive. Great hike choices! Clean restrooms were available

Hiked Cathedral Rock today. It's a short trail, but challenging. Beautiful view from the top. We took a little side trip coming back, thinking that we could connect with the Little Falls trail, but after bushwhacking our way to the top of a little gorge, we wended our way back to the trail.

I got cramps so we just parked, took pictures and left. (Lame, I know. Pain is hard). We definitely plan on a return trip because this is astonishingly beautiful and must be explored!

This is the trail for Griffith Peak and Mt. Charleston’s South Loop. If you’re aiming for Charleston’s summit but are scared of heights, this route has fewer cliff edges and becomes accessible earlier in the year. Though some places may have snow as late as July. After 4 miles you will walk within the tree graveyard from 2013’s Fire. Haunting beautiful is the best way to describe it. However even at 2 miles in you get a couple scenic overviews of Kyle Canyon. There are many sights to see and reasons to choose this trail. There is overflow parking (but is still usually full by 9 a.m. in the summer) and the restrooms have plumbing and are not just a hole in the ground.

I love hiking here, but parking on the weekends is always a challenge.

Please give up-hill hikers the right-of-way. Stop and move to the side and be safe and polite to your fellow hikers!
