"South Pass City began as a gold-mining town in the mid-1800s, but after an initial boom, the population dwindled to just a few hundred people. It was designated a historic site in the late 1960s and 17 restored original structures reflect the continuing preservation efforts. The town's grounds and trails are open year-round, but in the summer, it's also possible to tour the artifact-filled buildings, shop in the old general store, or pan for gold in Willow Creek." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Thank you to the young lady who stayed open to let us look in the gift shop and get a few things! Quick place to walk around and see some history, beautiful area and nice restrooms.

The lady in the gift shop was very nice. We had a very nice time here. Had the place to ourselves for most of the time. Checked out all the buildings and followed the walking guide. Panned for gold, were a little confused on how to do it at first, then we got the hang of it. Found lots of garnet but no gold. Next time! The buildings are super neat and interesting. There's a few hiking trails as well. We did the one that goes to the stamp mill. Tried some sarsaparilla- so good! Wish we would have came when the general store was open though.

Was really surprised arriving to see a huge abandoned mine as well as an old trading post before driving down to the cute refurbished town. You have to pay to tour the refurbished town (only if older than 18 or 19) Didn’t seem like harped on anyone for age or payment though. The refurbished town had preserved items and there was gold panning available for free right next to the river and bridge. After panning for about 30-45 minutes I did have small flecks of gold as well as rubys. There is a bathroom. Great place to take pictures.

Wanted to see an old ghost town on my trip and picked this one. Quite happy that I did. From the time you arrive it's as if you are transported back in time and are again in the old West. The atmosphere here brings to back to the days of old and you get a feel for what life must have been like for those that came here to make a life. The buildings are amazing, some lovingly restored and others in their natural state. All tell a story that will make you yearning for more. There is a nice gift shop here and markers throughout the site that tell the store of a once vibrant outpost that faded away as did so many towns on the frontier. Well worth a visit if you can stop by.

We did the South Pass drive and stopped to visit this location. The old town has a section of old building that you can tour for a price. We walked the free 1.7 mile hiking path around mining homesteads and ruins. Interesting.

This quiet little ghost town site was a favorite stop along our trip. Our entire family really enjoyed it! There are several buildings which you can enter in to and are setup as if they were stuck in time. Really well done historic site.

This place is a great side trop to learn some history. We were able to go into most of the buildings. I highly recommend this place for all ages. It's probably about a 2 mile easy walk I'd that.

Wyoming's best kept secret! I spent most of a day there. Pay attention to detail, like all the "old" canned food in the store - carefully wrapped new cans with old labels! Amazing. And all the employees are really friendly. Great place....

Yelp
We visited here back in September and the place is just great. We were ghost hunting and got some EVPs just like Zack Bagans would have. The staff is very friendly and the place is really restored to its original condition. Don't forget to do the mine tour as it's two hours of just fun. We had a great time here and will be back one day.

Yelp
I liked the idea of a ghost town to explore. They take care of it so I didn't mind the $8 fee for non-WY residents. Unfortunately there isn't a bite to eat or a drink to have within miles so if you come, you should pack a picnic for you/family.

Yelp
We went to South Pass City for the first time yesterday. Lots of foot traffic and a bus. Upon reading the sign for South Pass City, it appears they dedicated the sign just before we got there. The site is very well maintained. A few buildings are very interactive including history loving guides and even a piano player. We spent approximately an hour and a half exploring town and then took the mill tour. The mill tour guide, John, was extremely knowledgeable and his excitement was contagious. We will need to go back for the morning tour and to explore a few of the hiking trails. We'll done! Five stars all the way.

Yelp
It was definitely worth the stop. It's a mostly intact, old mining town. It's self-guided (my preference) with plenty of information along the way. Most interesting were the individual stories of people who came/went through the town.

Yelp
Exceptional tour of an old gold mine and mill by very good tour guides. You don't go under ground but get a view of the shaft and follow the ore thru a working mill works. Some of the huge machines have been restored. At the very end you see how the last step is pour almost pure gold bars. We missed the 150 year anniversary by one day. Also a self guided tour of original buildings in the old mining town. This whole experience cost us $4. Half that if you a Wyoming local. This is really worthwhile. Go enjoy this!
