The Brauhaus Schmitz restaurant on South Street in Philly was nothing short of outstanding. They were very courteous and very helpful and the food was great. You can't miss the restaurant either, the ambiance both outside and inside was top notch. Will definitely be back.

Brauhaus has the best collection of beer that I've ever been to. I've been going for a few years now.

We were so lucky to find parking right in front of the entrance to the restaurant. We had shoved a lot into one day as we were visiting for the weekend and leaving the next day. But I digress This restaurant was on my list for a while as I looked for German restaurants "close" to me (will drive for food). I love the ambiance. There were no hosts in lederhosen but I will let that slide. Staff was awesome and all recommendations were on point. I wanted a Jagerschnitzel and I got one - delicious. It was a good experience and I am so glad I squeezed it in.

It's a little sportsy for me, but love the Hofbrauhaus vibes. Sausages good in their own right, but made better with scharfer senf. Yum.

One of our favorite places in the city! Always great service and delicious food. The Haus Pommes with the jager gravy is our favorite, as well as the Currywurst. We also love the Feuerwurst, but they were out this time, so we tried the Speckwurst, which was also delicious. The beers are always great as well!

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the restaurant wasn't crowded. We were sitting across the bar to watch German soccer game. The bartender was very accommodating to our request to put the game on tv. Warm pretzel came out fast. I got my favorite German black beer, brussel sprouts, and goulash. Brussel sprouts were super tiny, served with diced bacon. The bacon was chewy and fatty. The glazed balsamic reduction gave sweetness to this appetizer. Good flavor but I wished the brussel sprouts were bigger. Goulash was perfect for this rainy day. Beef was very tender and flavorful. It's served with three slices of soft dark rye bread.

Brauhaus Schmitz makes you feel like you're escaping Philadelphia to leave for Germany to drink beer with the bois in a large beer hall like of those you see in movies! This where my friend group goes on Friday nights to drink good beer and catch up. Brauhaus Schmitz is Amazing. They have around 40 beers on tap and you don't really know what you're getting. But it's all German beer so you know you can't go wrong. They also have meals and small bites as well if you don't want to drink on an empty stomach. I think their pretzel is a good choice. The service is excellent. If they mess up your beer order, they usually just give you the extra beer. They're very nice about making sure that everyone is drinking the right beer. Brauhaus Schmitz has so much space for large parties. Usually there's 10 of us that go and visit and we've always been able to get a table. It's designed for groups to drink together which is hard to find in Philly. I love this place. I frequent it a lot and will continue coming back.

Coming back after one year and glad to receive the same high quality service, food and a wide selection of authentic German beers. This is one of the best places to chill with buddies, no loud music, only relaxing European vibes and is also a place for soccer enthusiasts. We need to give a huge shoutout to the bartender Carly for her exceptional service and energy, we felt like talking with a good friend instead of a random stranger. We will definitely be back very soon :)

My hubby is from balt Md his mom use to make sour beef dumplings his fav with tender thick beef & ginger snap sweet sauce fact closest to his mom is silver mini ng company in md.. but too far now to ride from philly! Well been meaning try the philly version here for long time..finally did - as hard to find sourbratten in philly but man this was horrendous!!! Watery sauce beef seemed like flat processed meat not the tender chunk of beef that easily shreds! The dumpling u can choke on.. and at the price in total as a delivery was close $35 .. its pretty pathetic & waste of money... never will i ever ... at this place sadly it hard to drive to silver mining nowadays but its head shoulder above this ... this is hardly edible. But least we tried it here -U live & learn. Dogs will get leftovers if they like it lol

A phenomenal German eatery. You walk in and feel like you've stepped into a Munich pub. The service is outstanding and speaks English ;). Great place to grab a German beer and watch a soccer aka Futbol match. Usually I drink a pint but this evening I was interested in something fun. I inquired about an Espresso Martini and the bartender offered to make me a something special that he created and the secret ingredient is beer! I was intrigued, and as an adventurous lass, I said go ahead. He smiled and left for a few moments only to come back with something beautiful - outstanding and different - a nice blend with hints of nut. Come for the atmosphere and German food - stay for the beer and sports - come back for the friendly service and fun time!

We came in for New Year's Day pork and sauerkraut and the food was pretty good! They seem understaffed but maybe they were just busier than they expected. I'd go back for beers and the pretzel.

Note: Street parking only - free on Sundays. Craving for German food? This one came up as recommended by yelpers! Came here on a Sunday night with a party of five for dinner. We were quickly seated near the entrance as there weren't many people eating (mostly drinking). Our server was very friendly and attentive. For appetizers, we got the potato pancakes and two sausages (original and cheese). My favorite one was the cheese one as it just melted in your mouth and the flavors were amazing once you mixed it with the sauerkraut/sour potatoes that it came with. As for entrees, we had the salmon and the pork chop. I HIGHLY recommend the pork chop as it was very juicy and the roasted potatoes were delicious! The salmon was okay, nothing unforgettable. This place is actually pretty big, I didn't realize that they had a big room in the back. Overall we had a good experience.

First time here while visiting Philly and it was great. Came with a big group and they sat us upstairs at there large semi-private table. Our waiter was pretty good and it's tough to handle a group of almost twenty, but he did well. Ordered the weiner platter, and waiter recommended the speckwurst and feuerwurst. Both were awesome especially paired with their mustard; the sweeter one was my favorite. I subbed out potato salad for fries and probably shouldn't have, as the fries were meh; sauerkraut was really good though.

Tasted a few things from here and they were all okay, not spectacular but its there if you want. Service slow around lunch and not busy, never got a water refill. It's nice inside though and does have a good beer selection. Maybe hit or miss on the food, but they're more known for the drinks so good for them instead. Not real doner style kebab that they serve on weekends, it was a little bit of a letdown. Just a bit average overall for me counting everything. Thanks

Deep down liebe ich das Brauhaus. However, the last two visits showed that the quality that was once a hallmark is now starting to decrease. The potato pancakes (Kartoffelpuffer) were once light, fluffy, & full over flavor. Now the potato pancakes are hard, dry, not flavorful & come out covered in sour cream & apple sauce. My experience w/ potato pancakes has always been that the pancakes come out w/ the sauce & sour cream on the side. Either way the pancakes were not good. The bratwurst I ordered was over cooked to the point where it was hard & tasted more burnt that wursty. The limited selection of schnapps was disappointing (says they do an Asbach flambé) but didn't have any Asbach behind the bar? The Doner Kebab was good but the bread wasn't. I think an over sized pita would do the job nicely. Like I mentioned before, I love the Brauhaus but I'm thinking that if the all around quality continues to decrease Brü around the corner can easily be the new go to.

I think I'd like the food if I were to go in person. We had a large party catered. The set up came a bit late and then took more time to actually get out, as the party went on. We should have ordered the cheese spatzle but got the plain and was it ever plain, no flavor whatsoever. BUT if you added the beer cheese was fantastic and spicy. The potato pancakes were decent but really dense. The apple sauce was good too and so was the kraut. The mains were a variety of sausage which were also good. We also ordered chicken and pork schnitzel which they forgot to bring. By the time they got back with it we were saddened by very large pieces of dried out and cold schnitzel.

I love this place! But I'll also admit I used to live in Germany and I love all things German, so a German themed restaurant can do no wrong by me. Come here for the ambiance and decor alone. The interior is gorgeous with so many decorative details that pay homage to ze Vaterland. If you're a fan of German beer, you literally can't find a better place in the city. The beer list is phenomenal with 31 beers on tap, exclusively German or German style beers. Bonus points for having my hometown brewery on tap with Haddonfield's Kings Road Brewery's altbier. If you don't find something good on tap, they have an even longer list of bottles to choose from. I've been here tons of times over the years, both for your average beer/dinner night out and also for special events like South Street's Oktoberfest and today's brunch with Santa. Brought my 8 year old son today and it was a well organized event with an all-you-can-eat buffet of a vast variety of food. My son especially loved the hot chocolate bar with different toppings (sprinkles, chocolate spoons, marshmallows, etc. not to mention a giant bottle of Fireball they left for grownups). I'll definitely be back!

First time there. Gary made my wife his famous Expresso Martini and I must say it was the best I ever tasted as well as my wife. The food recommendations were excellent. My wife had the seven salad and I the spatzel Mac and cheese and both were delicious. The service was excellent, plus they had thirty German and other nationality beers. The atmosphere is very enjoyable. We can't wait to go back.

This place is always fun and a good time. Very German themed bar. They serve a ton of beers especially wheat beers if you're a fan. We always get sausages and it's always a lot of food. Our waiter was also super nice and friendly!

Great selection of German beers. Great atmosphere, good service. This is a nice neighborhood bar that has a good $5 happy hour price for all their good beers. I like the fact they offer a cheap ( but quality) sausage special as part of happy hour.

Overnight nice place to grab a drink. Only ordered a snack here and opted for the pretzel and beer cheese. The beer cheese was very good but the pretzel was warm on the outside and cold on the inside. Very clean inside and staff are very nice. Very large selection of food on the menu and lots of different drink choices.

I've been coming to this place for at least 10 years, and I will never go back after today. I came in and sat down for dinner, and the waitstaff/bartenders were immediately obnoxious and inattentive. I placed an order for the pretzel, the potato pancakes, and a burger. When the potato pancakes came out, the applesauce and sour cream were already spread on them, which has never been done before when I've come in. They have always been on the side. I thought OK, they've made some kind of bougie change and I'll deal with it. Then my burger came out. It is supposed to be a double patty, smashed with smoked Gouda cheese. There was one hamburger patty, and it was clearly straight out of a freezer. It was way too symmetrical to have been smashed. There was no second patty and no Gouda cheese at all. It was drowned in mustard sauce . It took me five minutes to flag down my waiter, and when he came over, and I asked him what was going on. He told me that the menu was wrong. As if that was the solution. I said I don't understand how the menu being wrong is my problem, and he said well, we gave you a thicker patty to compensate. I was like well that's not a solution either, and he said he was going to go get the manager. The manager then came over and was a complete asshole the second he got to the table. He was glaring at me as if I had done something wrong on my end, and said sorry, we made a mistake and I would be happy to get you another burger and comp it. But the way he said it was like he was spitting in my face. I was like come while I guess I'm just confused as to what's going on and he got even angrier and said people make mistakes, that's what happened, do you want me to replace it or not? I was like no thanks, I don't think I actually want anything from here ever again. He looked me dead in the eyes, and said well, we don't want you back, and stormed off in a huff. So yeah, super good way to deal with the fact that you fucked everything up and super good way to treat a customer of over a decade. Big mistake. Huge.

Service is awesome. Restaurant week is upon us. Visiting this adorable place was perfect. Large outside seating area with full wooden protection from SEPTA barreling down South. The menu for dinner was pretty straightforward. Appetizer we chose the pretzel which was oddly small and hard. Closer crispy pretzel than the soft pretzel. Cheese sauce bier was solid, but cold. Better melted. Potato pancakes with apple sauce was surprising good! Well fried but the potato pancake solo needed a bit of salt. Def helpful with apple sauce. Main course fried chicken or pork cutlets with or without a sauce and fries and salad. We kept it simple with 'red pepper sauce on side'. It was perfectly fried. The FRENCH FRIES, idk-- just amazing. Well seasoned and perfect. Salad dressing was oniony but good. The beer--- yes. Go for the beer. Apple fritter was good too. Brownie dense more fudge. The 4 is cause the food was ok. I would return for the fries and BEER and the wider menu. I'll report back because their full menu looks even better.

My friends and I stopped by here and the vibes were super cute and christmas-y. We ordered beers but nothing else, but the staff were still very courteous and didn't shoo us out even though they were busy. Would come again, I want to try the schnitzels!

Loved this place. Made me feel back home. Beer selection was all German. I suppose they had other beers but they weren't on tap or on the board. It looks small from the street but theres loads of seats. When we were seated we received the menu and it was authentic Deutch. I had the flamenkuchen. It was very tasty. The others in my party had schnitzel and wurst. Both looked great. This was worth finding if you like authentic German food, beer and atmosphere. I enjoyed the entire experience.

Bring your appetite and put on the feedbag at this old-style pub! We came for the Restaurant Week dinner and left with a Great Dane doggie bag. Goulash soup was like goulash for four! Outstanding flavor and ginormous portion. Meatball appetizer hit the mark. Bread and cheese spread also delicious! Downhill from there-- Out comes the platter of (very dry, overbreaded) pork schnitzel with a barrel of fries and salad, and the sauerbraten (texture of doormat) with some good red cabbage. Apple strudel looked lovely but the pastry was doughy and underbaked. Yes, it's value for money, quantity over quality. I'll be back for lunch! Oh, did I mention the beer...

This place is so disappointing. There are so many flaws, I'm surprised it can stay in business. But I guess the German beer and food theme must keep it going. Today, I sat at the bar. The bartender ignores everyone at the bar since he is swamped pouring beers for the entire restaurant. It takes forever to get a beer and don't even bother ordering food. His response is always, "one minute." One beer an hour in a plastic cup I guess is good for here. My buddy likes this place, so I keep coming here to see him. The pretzels are tiny and they keep changing the cheese recipe. You never know what you are going to get. I was here one time and sat at a table. I asked for the same sandwich that I get at the bar. However, they refused to serve it to the table. I offered to pay extra. The waiter still refused. For some reason, the rolls do not leave the bar. Instead, the waiter lost business. The service here is so dreadful. I guess they can only handle a small crowd. I would recommend everyone to stay away from here. The service is just so bad. They have no respect for customer. Btw, you couldn't get more head on this beer.

Popped in here yesterday (Saturday) around 2-3ish in the afternoon for a snack since we were in the area and we knew they had that big soft pretzel on their menu. Vibes: Definitely a sports bar kind of theme, but I love the German steins and other decor on the walls that make it feel authentic (not that I've ever been to a German pub before). Inside seems quite spacious in the middle of the afternoon but I know the place gets packed for events. The outdoor dining structure is decorated really nicely with flowers and most of the tables are in the shade since it's an overhead structure. We chose to dine inside though since they had the doors open -- we wanted the fresh breeze, but not so much the city smells that we have to live with every day, you know? Service: little slow sitting at a table; might have been an unexpected afternoon rush or something. Didn't bother us too much. Food: we ordered the pretzel and were stuck between the potato pancakes or the currywurst. Pretzel was exactly as you'd expect, but instead of beer cheese I used it as a vessel for the sweet mustard on the table -- that stuff is delicious. The potato pancakes ... my family comes from Germany and Ireland back a couple generations so I love me some potatoes but these just didn't hit for me. I was drawn by the applesauce and sour cream, thinking it'd be an interesting combination, but instead it was just kind of bland. Needed some onion or something. We wished we'd gone with the currywurst in hindsight. Overall: based on prior experience sitting at the bar and also getting drinks (I'm pregnant now so that didn't happen this visit), overall vibe, and that sweet mustard, I still think it's a decent choice on South Street for a bite despite that this particular visit left us wanting a little bit more than usual. We know Brauhaus also does a great job with events too. So it just depends what you're coming for.

Back after five years, and not much has changed, which is just fine! I first met my girlfriend at the time on one of our first dates, and decided to surprise her with her high school friends here after we got engaged. I made a reservation for 10 people for 6:45pm on a Saturday, but some of her friends showed up as early as 5, and they were able to accommodate. The entire surprise went according to plan and it was the perfect spot to be a little rowdy, excited, and loud. The beer menu was as extensive as ever, and I ordered the jagerschnitzel, which was huge and perfectly cooked. Now this place has a special meaning to us, we will obviously be back and support this business!

Hands-down a house favorite. A return engagement long overdue. Germany on a plate in in a glass.

Servers were super nice, but the food wasn't. Ordered the kartoffelpuffer was missing both sour cream and chives, and besides that, it was kind of bland. The chicken cutlet was *absolutely* disgusting- I don't think anyone has changed the oil in a few days. I'm surprised this place is so popular. Sucks because I have been looking forward to trying German food for awhile, and it's not easy for me to dislike something.

I had the smoked chicken. The speck was the beginning of the salt. The chicken, while flavorful, was far too salty. At least, it was fully cooked, unlike my son's. The gravy made the once crispy potatoes soggy. We sat in the quiet back room. The decor was very Bavarian.

My boyfriend was really craving a pork knuckle so off to Brauhaus Schmitz we go! The food was delicious, but be warned - the portions were massive! Our waiter was surprised that we ordered 3 plates, but little did we know that each dish filled the entire plate. The original Bratwurst was delicious! I could just come back for this. The pork and sausage bratwurst was good too, but it reminded me of a breakfast sausage with a little bit of sweetness. Both were excellent! The Wiener Schnitzel was excellent as well but very heavy. It's a meal for two for all you ladies interested in getting it. I wished I went with the red-pepper sauce instead since it's a staple item. The Hollandaise schnitzel is new to the menu, but just as good for everyone who likes hollandaise sauce. The pork knuckle was HUGE! The pork was juicy and tender, but I personally wasn't a huge fan. My boyfriend really enjoyed this though and it helped to satisfy his German food craving. The Au Jou at the bottom was a bit salty so be forewarned! Definitely a must try, but if I come back, the bratwurst will be my go to!

This is a really fun place to eat. When things are open for indoors, they have a cool open room with lots of benches you can sit at, so its super engaging with everyone there. They have other seating outside of this as well, but very much a feel of a place you can go to get good food, be a little rowdy, watch some football, and drink great beer. They have a ridiculous sausage plate for tasting. I got this with 6 different sausages, and it was such a cool experience to try so many different types (mainly beef and pork mixtures.) Their side offerings are pretty solid as well (potato pancakes bavarian pretzel are solid gets.) For beer, they literally have a glossary - so much try, you'll definitely find something you like. Like I said, really fun atmosphere - super casual, great place to try and avoid the sunday scaries.

[This review was made in 10/2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic] My friend and I had intentions on going to an Italian restaurant, but after a change of plans, we ended up here with an even larger group of friends! I had never heard of this place before nor had I tried German food before, but as my fine arts professor once said in college, "It's never bad to try everything at least once!" Because I wanted to try so much of the menu, my friend and I split two dishes. We split the Wiener Schnitzel (chicken) and the Schweinshaxe! Coming here made me realize how similar cuisines can be between cultures. The Wiener Schnitzel is a breaded chicken cutlet that came with fries on the side and it really reminded my of the Japanese katsus that I've had in many ramen eateries. The Schweinshaxe, which is Brauhaus Schmitz' specialty, is a crispy pork shank with a dunkel lager jus and wow was this delicious. For those of you who have had Filipino food, this is very similar to crispy pata, but of course with German flavors. Of the two, the Schweinshaxe was my favorite. I did see that they had rooftop seating, which I will try the next time I get the chance. We were seated on the extended sidewalk, which was very loud at times, but bearable. Regardless, it was good food with good company, and that's all that you can really ask for.

Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Loved the decor. The food - be prepared to eat! And drink! Everything we ate we loved. And the portions are large, especially the pork!

Mother's Day dinner was amazing! My son said he had to share his favorite place. LOVED it! The Share tray with meats, cheeses and breads was delicious. We had jeager shnitzel and Rindsrouland plus Apple Strudel for dessert...and beers on tap!! Mike M was a fabulous server! The atmosphere was friendly and comfortable. Servers were fast, professional and reservations were perfect. We arrived a little early...no problem. German beer in tap was fabulous and I dont drink beer....maybe i will now.

This is a cool spot (in a German way) to get a beer and dinner. They have a reasonably priced, unique menu. We had the schnitzel (aka breaded chicken cutlet with a savory gravy), the Brussel sprout appetizer (sooooo good), the herbed sausage and spicy sausage. Every thing tasted fresh and well put together. Our server, Morgan, was very informative and attentive. She suggested the Kolsch Kranz, which we loved. We will definitely be back.

I'm surprised to say it but I had the best food here that I've had in quite a while. Service was meh but some bomb ass German food made up for it. We sat at the bar area which I'd caution against if you're going for dinner as we didn't really get the best service but whatever. We started off with the pretzel app which was ok but uninspired, skip this one and save room for the main event. My husband got a sausage assortment for dinner which I can't really speak in because none of it looked like anything I'd ever want to try. I, however, got some delicious ass schnitzel which I highly recommend. I think it was called jaeger schnitzel but I could also be making that up. I opted for pork, and it had some sort of bacon onion gravy on top that was fantastic. The side salad, oddly enough, was amazing. Side salads aren't typically things I get excited about but this one was on point. The sauerkraut was amazing too and should not be missed. Not sure if it is on the menu but they do beer flights which I highly recommend as well. Nice way to sample a bunch of different brews. I loved this place and when the mood strikes imma be back for more schnitzel.

this bar is perfect for those who love wheat beers or just want to explore german brews. from light refreshing ales to dark, malty beers, there are tons of options and bartenders are super knowledgeable. it can definitely get crowded/loud on weekend nights but i've always had pleasant experiences here and regularly come back to see what's on tap

We had a terrible experience here twice now. The service is unbelievably slow. Our server didn't know what a green tea shot was. They stopped serving our friend because she asked for water and that meant she was too drunk? (She was not) plus the beer wasn't even anything special Do not recommend

My husband and I are visiting Philly for a few days and were in the mood for some good German food for dinner. We found this place via Yelp and decided to try it! We were not disappointed! The moment we walked through the door, the staff was friendly and accommodating. The space itself is very cool and, while the restaurant was very busy, we didn't feel cramped at our high too table toward the back of the restaurant. I got the jagerschnitzel and we split the pretzel with cheese. Everything was delicious! My entree came with salad and fries and they were both so good and fresh. The pretzel (sorry, no photo) came with farmer's cheese. The cheese contained caraway seeds which I typically do not like, but it was delicious despite this! We would love to come back here the next time we are in Philly!

This is a beautiful restaurant, the food and service are great, and Brauhaus is really fun. They have stand-up comedy the middle Wednesday of every month in a cozy back room. And of course there's an enormous German beer selection but some great wine too.
