The Best Historic Restaurants to Visit in the U.S. Now - AFAR

"A family-run retro diner that began as a soda fountain in the 1940s, this spot serves coffee and buttermilk, snapping turtle soup, nine flavors of phosphates, eight cheesecakes, and plenty of house-made pies including strawberry rhubarb, ginger peach, and shoofly; it's a local favorite and was even featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: Triple D Nation." - Pat Tompkins

They had oysters on the half shell, and they were enormous! Chili was decent. Grandpa and friend enjoyed a fish sandwich and hamburger. I usually hate shoe string fries, but they're of higher quality. The soups were barely hot, but I didn't bother to ask them to warm them up either. I'm not sold on the snapping turtle soup; nice waitress gave us Sherry to flavor it up and well, I was excited to try but it is not my favorite. You have a cute place! And I love my man, Guy Fieri!

Food was OK, Nothing special Philly sandwiches were bland not much flavor. Atmosphere was great.

The Philly Chili was okay, but hard to eat out of the sundae cup. The Reuben was excellent. The real downer was the pie and shake. Very limited pie selection, the Lemon Meringue was unavailable, which is weird considering it was featured on DDD. The shake was awful. For a soda fountain to serve that, it was an embarrassment. Overall a skip

Wow! Where to start? The food is great, just like the old diner you would go to for your favorite comfort food. Only place I have been that serves Shoo Fly Pie and believe me, it is delicious. I don't think you could order anything and be disappointed. You won't walk away hungry either. The service was great. They are so friendly and helpful you feel at home from the first time you go there. If you haven't been there, then you are missing out.

Normally it’s good but last week my man and I had Philly sandwiches and he had plastic in the sandwich. Good thing he caught it. I told the waitress and she said she would tell the owner….never got a sorry or comp for that matter. Waited 20 minutes for the check and just wasn’t an overall good experience. Probably won’t go back for a while.

Would like to give 5 stars but, I think I ordered the wrong things. Wanted to step out of the box so tried the Snapping Turtle Soup. It was very thick, almost pureed, and I was hoping for something with bigger chunks of meat and veg. But, maybe that's normal for turtle soup. Tried the Crab Cakes too, as they were on the DDD features. Seems like the meat used was good but, something was just off. On the good side the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich was great. I would recommend a sandwich, soda and desert. We didn't have desert but they all looked wonderful. May try stopping just for desert next time we're passing through.

What a great place. Got Cheese steak and shoe string fries. So delicious and hot/ fresh food. Then I checked out pies, funny cause they bring a tray full of pie slices to show off what they have. I got a piece of the peanut butter and chocolate cream pie. So very tasty! Great experience being the first visit to the South Side Soda Shop. Also the inside of this place is very cute and looks like an old diner

The waitress was the best part of my experience. There wasn't much meat in between the bread of my turkey sub, but it was good. The owner walked by several tables repeatedly without speaking or interacting with the customers. I believe that little but could have helped tremendously since the shop was featured by Guy Fieri.
