The Best Historic Restaurants to Visit in the U.S. Now - AFAR

"A family-run retro diner that began as a soda fountain in the 1940s, this spot serves coffee and buttermilk, snapping turtle soup, nine flavors of phosphates, eight cheesecakes, and plenty of house-made pies including strawberry rhubarb, ginger peach, and shoofly; it's a local favorite and was even featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: Triple D Nation." - Pat Tompkins

Came here with my wife and my mother in law when I had the day off. I had seen this place about a month ago and thought it looked neat. The turtle soup sign caught my eye! We arrived, and i was very glad and surprised to hear that my mother in law has always wanted to go to an old school diner like this one. And old school it is! It's like a time capsule in here, so cool! We got the pesto and hummus appetizer, which was their special appetizer when we came. It was very good, you could tell the ingredients were fresh and well prepared, yum! For my entree I got the liverwurst and bacon sandwich, which was also a special. It sounded interesting and it was actually really good! I got a cup of the turtle soup. Not as good as NOLA turtle soup, but still good, especially on a gross-weather day like it was. I had heard previously about Green River Soda and its cult following. I got that in it's phosphate form for my drink, and oh my goodness, wow! That flavor wakes you up and slaps harder than an angry girlfriend! I also got a cherry phosphate. Not as good as green river, but still good! Finally we got some old fashioned creme pie. Sadly, it was disappointing. Not a lot of flavor to it unfortunately. But by all means I would return here! They do a great job keeping old school alive, and is possibly the last place in the area that does.

This place is absolutely lovely. It feels like an old fashioned diner from the moment you walk inside. From the delicious diner fare to the sweet waitstaff that calls you "hon", this was an experience I won't soon forget. My husband and I went here for dinner last night and we were so thrilled. We got a Green River soda so yummy it will knock your socks right off. And the peppermint milkshake was a seasonal delight. Then there was the food. They aren't kidding around about that. The Philly Cheesesteak was unctous and just so tender and juicy and delightful. Also huge! My husband said the same about the burger. Then came the plethora of desserts. Not just pies, although they've got a list of dozens of homemade ones. But floats, malts, sundaes, and more! We couldn't get enough in one go, so we'll definitely be back. My favorite thing? The spiral cut fries that were so long it looked like an entire potato. Just aces. Try it! You'll love it too.

This place has been on my husband's "want to go" list for a bit, so when he had the day off we decided to go with my mother. It is very cute and the staff was friendly. The food was pretty good to and so were the drinks. The pie was a little bit disappointing, but everything else was really good

This place is SO CUTE! It's an authentic old fashioned diner, the kind that looks like a metal train. My daughter and son in law took me here and we absolutely loved it! I got the #8, which is a marinated chicken sandwich. It was delicious. We also got a basket of twirly fries. It was huge! The staff was extremely friendly and fun! We will be back.

I had a Philly cheese steak with no onions and a side of curly fries. The Philly cheese steak was amazing. It came with a side of peppers and pickle to add if you wanted. The curly fries were perfect. The sandwich was HUGE. They had probably 20 pies on the day I went. I got the raspberry cream pie. It was amazing. I would recommend and will definitely go back.

Quaint. Vintage. Historic Diner. Frozen in time. Cool vibe. Be prepared for a sugar rush — there’s at least 15 different homemade pie flavors. I ordered the Fried Clam Strips (lobster) Roll. Very interesting and piled high with clam strips. The curly fry basket (ordered as a side for sandwiches) is humongous and big enough for 3-4 people to share. Server was friendly and knowledgeable. Parking is only on the street. Located near an elementary school so school traffic can be heavy during pickup time.

This is one of those places you MUST scratch off your bucket list ! What a neat place ! I was in town for work when I got onto Google to see if there are any decent spots nearby. Wow I am amazed at how lucky I was to stumble upon this place ! I took tons of pics and even made a tiktok about it. It's REALLY good ! Come eat here ! 100%

Would like to give 5 stars but, I think I ordered the wrong things. Wanted to step out of the box so tried the Snapping Turtle Soup. It was very thick, almost pureed, and I was hoping for something with bigger chunks of meat and veg. But, maybe that's normal for turtle soup. Tried the Crab Cakes too, as they were on the DDD features. Seems like the meat used was good but, something was just off. On the good side the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich was great. I would recommend a sandwich, soda and desert. We didn't have desert but they all looked wonderful. May try stopping just for desert next time we're passing through.
