Yelp
Local. Organic. Biodynamic. Sustainable. All the things I believe in -- plus delicious and affordable. This is one of my favorite wineries ever, let alone in Ontario, where I've had a hard time finding wines that suit my west-coast-educated palate.
The Connect Red and Connect White wines are our house wines. Complex, with luscious rich flavors and a long, long, long finish (the "Everlasting Gobstopper" effect, for those acquainted with Roald Dahl's wonderful story), these wines are completely affordable, eminently drinkable, and great to cook with -- the only issue is that they need to be completely consumed within an evening, as they don't keep. As I've gotten older, I've started having trouble with the sulfites added to many wines, but Southbrook's organic offerings have never given me any grief.
We finally got to visit the winery yesterday, on a Birthday Pilgrimage for gourmet tacos and wine (trust me, it's the perfect combination for the Birthday Girl in question). While the outside is somewhat spartan (almost bleak, in the cold and rainy April weather), the interior capitalizes on a fantastic amount of natural light and a spectacular view of the vineyards, with clean, minimalist contemporary decor accented by a few natural wood showpieces.
For our wine flight, we opted to taste the "Whimsy!" line -- four wines, all delicious. The Whimsy! Winemakers' White especially delighted me, with some juicy tropical notes and a lovely balanced dry finish. Southbrook has managed to utilize and represent their local terroir brilliantly.
Did I mention that Southbook was awarded InterVin 2012 Winery of the Year? They completely deserve it, in my book.
