"A Winery for the Environmentalist Not only is Southbrook certified as an organic and LEED sustainable winemaker in Ontario, it is also a biodynamic winery. This means that it treats the farm as a single living entity. The farm’s soil, plants and animals are able to grow low-impact, vibrant crops, including grapes, which then make great wine. It was a treat to see sheep grazing behind the vineyard. The building is also a great example of fantastic architecture but also adhering to sustainable principles. Diamond & Schmitt Architects created a sleek and modern building—surrounded by lavender—where natural light is ensured and deep roof overhangs give added shade to the building. They even thought where lighting in the building will affect bird migration routes! Native wetland plants break down pollution from stormwater draining off our access road and parking lots. In addition to its great selection of wine, you can dine on the kitchen’s famous pizza on their outdoor patio looking out to the vineyard. Southbrook also hosts Vinyasa in the Vineyard by the famous Wine Ladies, which is a unique way to tour the winery. I recommend having brunch at Trius, which is a ten minute drive from Southbrook and then touring Southbrook for a lively morning in Niagara-on-the-Lake!"

I had a truly wonderful experience at this place! The selection of wines was impressive, with a perfect balance between local favorites and unique surprises. Each tasting was beautifully explained, making the whole experience feel both fun and educational. A very special thank you to Cinthya (I hope I’m spelling it right!) for her outstanding service. She was not only knowledgeable, but also incredibly warm, welcoming, and passionate about what she does. She made us feel right at home and turned the tasting into an unforgettable moment. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to enjoy great wine and even better hospitality!

Google
A very nice place to do a wine tasting. Don’t get thrown off by the long purple wall. The girl who served us was very knowledgeable about the wines. A contingency plan for food for the tasters while an event is taking place would be welcomed.

A charming, family-owned winery that delivers warm, welcoming hospitality alongside exceptional Chardonnays and Cassis. A special thank you to John for generously sharing his knowledge of wine and gifting us a bottle—an absolute gentleman through and through.

Stopped in on the way to Niagara and we're glad we did! George went out of his way to give us lots of information and put together a delicious flight. The Estate Orange is amazing. We highly recommend Southbrook!

We had a great first-time-for-us visit yesterday at Southbrook Organic Vineyards. The wines we tasted were all delicious. Our server, Cynthia, made the experience top-notched. She is very knowledgeable about the wines, and guided us smoothly through our tasting. Southbrook is one of the few wineries in the area producing Orange wines. That has nothing to do with oranges- it’s a wine made from white grapes that has had skin contact in the wine making process. It’s a bit of a different taste and texture from a white wine, and I hope that you give it a try. I enjoyed my taste of it. Another highlight of this winery is that they only use grapes from their own certified organic vineyard, or from other certified organic growers in the region. Now maybe you think that is some reason to shy away from it, but the opposite is true. Avoidance of pesticides and commercial fertilizers in the vineyard requires more effort and vigilance, and the result is wines that are clean, fresh, and yummy!

Clean and great ambiance. Offers a variety of 100% organic wines. Organic grapes purchased from local growers. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Poetica Red 2020 is the best.

Southbrook Vineyards is absolutely amazing! The property is so stunning and the people here are super friendly. We booked a tasting and everything was delicious! George was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! He helped pick out some wines based on what our preferences are. The property is clean and has a fantastic farmers market on Sundays! 10/10! Would definitely come back!!

Google
We were a group of eight and had a fantastic experience at this winery. I love that I was able to book a wine tasting reservation online, the process was super easy. The winery itself is beautiful and quiet, and they have a lovely patio setup. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food service was fast. The wine tasting was well organized, allowing us to sample four different wines with everyone receiving the same selections. We also got a complimentary wine sample, and it was my favourite. It’s a very light white wine, we even bought some at the store. An added bonus was being able to bring my dog. They gave her water, treats, and pets!

Yelp
Nice winery with a pretty interior and outdoor seating. Lots of glass walls that give you a view of the fields. Wines: A bit too dry for my liking so I didn't pick up any bottles but if you don't mind that this is a nice spot to check out. The staff are quite polite, professional, and patient in explaining all their wines. I paid $20 for a flight of 4 glasses and received a welcome glass as well. I tried the following: Welcome Glass: Triomphe White - tropical aromas. I can see it for easy drinking / something casual. Just too dry for me. 1) Triomphe Riesling - green apple & lime zest. A bit too tart for me. 2) Triomphe Cab Franc Rosé - summer strawberry, apple. Unique and strong strawberry notes but wish it was more juicy. 3) Triomphe Merlot - rich, lush fruit. I wish it was more fruit forward. 4) Estate Petit Verdot - violets, black plum. Not for me. Felt like this had high tannins and acidity. Overall, would recommend if you like dry wines. Service is nice and the winery is pretty. They even have an area where they do bee farming to collect their own honey.

Yelp
Although most of the wines weren't to my liking, I commend this winery on their stellar customer service experience...especially considering an extremely poor experience from another winery! I came here intending to just buy a bottle of their Orange Wine. I had heard soo much about it, but as it's not a super cheap bottle, I was enticed to do a tasting instead. I do not know too much about their wines. The only thing that I do know is that Southbrook is one of the few - if only - wineries that are organic. I was met with a friendly staff member who listened to what I liked and customised a tasting for me based on that. (I don't know her name, but she was Turkish and had curly hair.) She literally pulled out all the stops for me and that encouraged me to try several of their wines, including their Orange Wine...which wasn't really what I was expecting. It was dry and it basically tasted like kombucha. During the tasting, there were other customers who wanted to ask her something / purchase some wine, but she politely and professionally excused herself to attend to them. Towards the end of the tasting, she said that she had a surprise for me and she came back with a chocolate lava cake to accompany their raspberry wine. It was soo unexpected and such a treat! Even though I did not end up buying their Orange Wine, I did buy one of their Rieslings which I did enjoy a lot! This lady was soo pleasant to deal with as she listened, knew what she was talking about in terms of the varietals of wine that they offered, and wasn't stuck on the fixed tastings, but rather offered something out of the box! Great experienced, highly recommended!

Yelp
I tried an organic winery in Kelowna and loved it, so I wanted to give another a try. Based on my rating you can see - I wasn't disappointed! I liked pretty much everything I tried and we left with three bottles. What I would recommend the most - their off dry or sweet Riesling, their anniversary wine (one of the best fortified wines I've had) as well as the cab sub and cab franc blend. I wasn't a fan of their orange wine but it was just a bit acidic for my taste. I would definitely love to go back as we didn't have a ton of time to check out more. But thanks Southbrook for being so accommodating, friendly and the great wines!

Yelp
Comparing all the vineyards we have visited over the past few years while here in Niagara on the Lake, this is the least impressive as far as taste goes for us. We are more into sweeter tasting wines and they just didn't have what we like. Very cool building! All Organic!!

Rachel W.

Yelp
Delicious organic wines. If you are into orange wine, Southbrook is the place you want to be! Very kind and knowledgeable staff. Modern building and great patio.

Yelp
The Perfect First Time Wine Tour Experience. Absolutely stunning vineyard. They are an all organic and pesticide free vineyard located in Niagara on the Lake. We opted for the $25 package: 4 wine + tapas pairing and it was lovely, we learned about the different types of wines they produce and the ideal food pairing for each one. I would highly recommend booking this. We also did the free group wine tour which took us across the estate and sampled four more different wines.

Yelp
Wanted to stop here because of learning the wines were made from fruit (peaches/pears/apples, etc) and not grapes. Person working on Sunday (10/22/19) at about 11:00am was very engaging. She had lots of info for us. We sampled four wines between the two of us. They were nice, but offered no depth of flavor. Probably a bad idea to sample these after Inniskillin's Riesling wines. Ended up buying the blueberry chocolate one, because it was a fun idea.

Yelp
Like the sleekness of the building and the way it blends into the nearby environment, a modern winery that's for sure, lots of glass, and focus on sustainability, also LEEDS certified. Be sure to taste the late harvest Vidal, it's not an ice wine but it's close. Good try for those that are not huge ice wine fans but like a desert wine every once in a while. Also enjoyed the Cab Sau (from the tasting menu) delicious though at $45, did not feel like the correct price point. Strong body on this one. This is our second visit and we will be returning.

Yelp
Local. Organic. Biodynamic. Sustainable. All the things I believe in -- plus delicious and affordable. This is one of my favorite wineries ever, let alone in Ontario, where I've had a hard time finding wines that suit my west-coast-educated palate. The Connect Red and Connect White wines are our house wines. Complex, with luscious rich flavors and a long, long, long finish (the "Everlasting Gobstopper" effect, for those acquainted with Roald Dahl's wonderful story), these wines are completely affordable, eminently drinkable, and great to cook with -- the only issue is that they need to be completely consumed within an evening, as they don't keep. As I've gotten older, I've started having trouble with the sulfites added to many wines, but Southbrook's organic offerings have never given me any grief. We finally got to visit the winery yesterday, on a Birthday Pilgrimage for gourmet tacos and wine (trust me, it's the perfect combination for the Birthday Girl in question). While the outside is somewhat spartan (almost bleak, in the cold and rainy April weather), the interior capitalizes on a fantastic amount of natural light and a spectacular view of the vineyards, with clean, minimalist contemporary decor accented by a few natural wood showpieces. For our wine flight, we opted to taste the "Whimsy!" line -- four wines, all delicious. The Whimsy! Winemakers' White especially delighted me, with some juicy tropical notes and a lovely balanced dry finish. Southbrook has managed to utilize and represent their local terroir brilliantly. Did I mention that Southbook was awarded InterVin 2012 Winery of the Year? They completely deserve it, in my book.

Yelp
Big modern winery with great wine. I love the water and rock entrance. It's very different from the other estate buildings. Inside is airy and modern. The tasting are well worth it. They have some great wines albeit more on the expensive side. They have a nice outdoor patio as well with pizzas and such.

Yelp
YES! This is an Organic Winery doing it right. We were so disappointing yesterday after stopping by a neighboring organic winery that simply failed to live up to the hype. I am overjoyed to see this gem in the region holding it down on the organic front... Bees (honey for purchase inside), chickens, sheep, ecologically designed grounds with a simple and modern feel, and delicious wine. Basically we died and went to heaven. Tastings are a little more expensive than most of the surrounding vineyards but, you know, you pay a premium to be a pretentious organic loving hipster.

Yelp
I've been to this winery twice, both positive experiences. We tried a few wines and enjoyed our time there. My favourite red is the Connect red, which was discontinued earlier this year. Hearing this, I went to the LCBO in a frantic and cleaned out one of their store's supply. It is smooth, full bodied and a bit on the dry side. I've been saving these 9 bottles for a special occasion and tried a bottle last night... it tasted off. i called Soutbrook today and asked them whether this is normal , and whether the shelf life of organic wines are shorter, and Bill Redelmeier, the owner of the winery picked up the phone, apologized for this and offered me a refund on this bottle. We then chatted a bit about what other wines they were producing and what is similar to the Connect Red, that I so deeply miss. Shortly after, one of their staff called me and took my credit card information to process the refund. I applaud this winery for, not only their excellent wine, but their fantastic customer service.

Yelp
There is so much to say about South Brook... Organic wine seems to be all the rage now. Some people take it a whole ibg step further and make it biodynamic. If you are not familiar with the tern (I wasn't), then what it means is that not only do they forego pesticides and all this bad icky stuff but they created an environment that super natural through the entire food chain. For example, there are at Southbrook sheep walking in between the vines and eating the bottom leaves off them (to sheep it's candy), naturally fertilize the soil and attract a whole bunch of very useful insects and microorganisms that help the vineyard. Etc etc etc. (plus no labour cost to remove those pesky little bottom leaves that make the vine weaker). We came on a day when they were doing tours of the place and offering to taste various wines they make. Our guide was Bill the owner himself. He and his family still live in Richmond Hill (old timers should remember the old South Brook farm here where we used to pick strawberries and where there is now a new residential subdivision between Major Mac and Valley Vista). Bill is an innovator. Several years ago he created a product called Bioflavia (sold right there at the farm). Bioflavia is basically processed grape skins that were dried and ground into a powder that you can add to shakes and salads. It's rich in all kids of good things and there is nothing like this anywhere else. Bill went on Dragon's Den to pitch the Bioflavia story (go to youtube and search "bioflavia dragons den") and scored a deal with Arlene. The wines are quite outstanding too. However, if possible, sample it before you buy it. They had several different Chardonnays, all priced similarly but coming from different barrels. One in particular was head and shoulders above any under-$40 white wine I've tried while the other one was just okay. Bill mentioned they were hosting some sort of Chardonnay "symposium" at Southbrooth with celebrity winemakers from all over the world descending on St Katharines. I must say I look very differently at wine after this visit and hold out Ontario wines in a higher regard. Also, happy that smart capitalists like Bill live in our town and build a legacy. Architecturally, the new Southbrook looks like a one-storey version of the Four Seasons opera place in Toronto and for a good reason: The same architect built them both. Next time you go St Kath / Naigara for some wine, pay a visit to Southbrook. Even if there is no tour that day, talk to their staff. You'll leave there inspired.

Yelp
Beautiful space with a strong focus on sustainability. Their fortified wine is *absolutely* worth it.

Yelp
This was the most interesting stop on our Niagra tour. The commitment to organic processes and biodynamics made this a unique experience. The building is really top-notch and George, our host, was outstanding. Like most Niagra wines, you're not going to find much to call world-class, but there's enough there to make the visit worth it. If nothing else, learning the story of their commitment to the environment is worth the stop.

Yelp
Beautiful tasting room with vineyard view, very professional and helpful staff. Organic, biodynamic wines, red wines doesn't have without sulfa. No headache after red wines. Awarded for Intervin 2012 Winery of the year, Southbrook has solid white wines. 2011 Whimsy winemakers white and 2010 Whimsy Chardonnay were good and refreshing. Poetica Chardonnay is good, well balanced and has crisp finish. Worth to drop by if you are around this area.

Yelp
This place is absolutely beautiful! Though I didn't spend much time there and only got to see the tasting room - as I said... BEAUTIFUL - I really enjoyed my visit and look forward to going back for a more complete experience. This time I picked up a few bottles of their Cab Shiraz. Spicy and so good with some super stinky cheese!

Yelp
we took advantage of The Wine & Herb Festival info - a weekend touring the 21 Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake where each will feature a different herb-themed food pairing matched to a premium VQA wine selected to highlight the flavour and aroma of the herb. featured herb - Arugula Pesto Pizza Goat Cheese, Baked Potato, Tomato on Vinifera & Whole Wheat Crust with 2008 Cabernet Rose review - loved this place! organic, biodynamic, gorgeous modern, clean lines and elegant facility. pizza was amazing. we even went back at the end of the day to sit out on the patio, near the vines to have a pizza made! it was Cabernet and sausage pizza, delicious paired with their Cabernet.

Yelp
Had a lovely lunch and wine tasting today. Shared the Farmers Plate while enjoying a glass of Triomphe Chardonnay, divine!! Service was outstanding, from both the restaurant and winery staff. Definitely worth stopping in and exploring this ultra modern, yet warm and welcoming winery. Two thumbs up!!

Yelp
I've traveled around the world and eaten in some of the best local restaurants in Italy, France, Spain, India and more and I have to say that my experience at Southbrook Winery rivaled my foreign experiences. Thanks to excellent Executive Chef, Shawn Murphy, who personally called me to go over my dietary restrictions and discuss menu options. His passion for preparing the highest quality food was impressive... We watched with delight as he picked herbs that he grew right there on the property. Everything is locally grown on the property or within a km... Thank you to Danielle, who gave us a tour and described the Biodynamic growing practices.... I can't understand why every winery doesn't follow the same practices...the product is exceptional. We left fully satiated and very very happy!

Yelp
I apologize for not writing this review earlier. Back in late October, my wife and I visited this winery as part of my birthday. What a gem. We were thoroughly impressed by not only the wines but the nature of the winery itself. Since we both work at a winery back in VA, we were looking for wines we don't normally taste. We took back a case of several of the great wines here! A special thanks to George who was amazing and knew everything about both the winery and the wines. He was so enjoyable and you can tell since I won't forget his name. Hope to see during ice wine time, George!

Yelp
This review is solely for the wine tasting experience. The wines are ok, except for the raspberry wine which I love. A disappointment however is that the raspberry wine is more expensive at the winery then the LCBO (?huh? Don't understand that). And the tasting fee is the largest I've seen anywhere, never mind for mediocre wine. Otherwise love the sustainable building and organic practices.

Yelp
Our first stop on our two days in Niagara-on-the -Lake. The tasting room was a long rectangular building, in a vivid blue color. Inside, the tasting room as a very modern, sleek tasting room with lots of glass and stainless steel. It gave a very modern vibe. It was one of the few wineries we visited that had wi-fi. We tried their Triomphe Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2007 and 2008 Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend side by side. We preferred the 2007 blend. After reading the winemaker's notes, it turns out the 2007 has a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot than the 2008. We also tried the 2010 Cabernet Franc and the Whimsy 2010 Cabernet Franc 101.

Yelp
We stopped in for a tasting and stayed for a delicious lunch on the patio. The entire experience was superb! We were traveling with our 6 year old and I thoroughly appreciated that while we were tasting wine, she was given a tasting of sparkling ciders, in wine glasses, at no charge. This small step made it so we all could relax a little more and she could be a part of the experience with us. The tasting flight was a great start and a great way for me to try Ice wine for the first (and probably last) time. The fresh baked pizza lunch on the patio was Outstanding! LOVED IT!!

Yelp
Visiting from Alberta, this was my first stop last Saturday, March 10, as I carried on to 11 other wineries. This was the worst. $3.00 per taste (triple what the most others are charging). I received about 2 tablespoons of wine in my tasting glass while the person beside me received a full ounce. Too much babble from the pourers. Take a pass... the wineries up the road are much better, and the wines every bit as good.

Yelp
It was our first time wine tasting in the region and were looking for superb ice wine. Our hostess at the B&B where we stayed gave us cards to present for tasting, but the young lady behind the counter did not accept them. Clearly, I'm not writing a review about the wines themselves but about the lack of willingness to offer us something to "bring us in". The building is architecturally very appealing and we would have loved to stay and taste.

Brian P.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience on the beautiful property. The wines were great and we even brought local honey home.
