My niece made a reservation for 6 PM to celebrate my sister and cousin's birthdays. She and her mother arrived around 6, and the rest of us came shortly thereafter. There were seven attendees at our party, and we were seated before 6:30.
Initially, the waitress took our drink orders, but the evening took a turn for the worse after that. After bringing our drinks, she returned around 7 or a little after to take our dinner orders. We received our salads, but unfortunately, we didn't receive our main course until 7:50 PM, and that was with several reminders.
When I placed my order, I asked for the wedge salad with romaine lettuce, but that didn't happen. Even thought the waitress said I could get it with romaine lettuce, I received iceberg lettuce. I ordered the pasta with sausage and shrimp, but the waitress suggested that the chicken was good as well, so I agreed to try the chicken. I assumed it would be a half-and-half portion of chicken and shrimp, but I was charged $44 for a dish that included both chicken and shrimp, which were not well prepared. The shrimp were overcooked and had a rubbery texture, while the sausage was so hard that I could barely chew it.
My sister had a similar experience with her pasta. She didn't order shrimp due to an allergy but requested extra sausage, which took several reminders for the waitress to bring. When she did receive it, the sausage was also overcooked.
My cousin ordered the salmon dish, but she received only a piece of salmon on a bare plate. Ther were no brown butter pecan crust, no fresh cranberry, or no roasted butternut squash. When she asked the waitress why her salmon looked different from the others, the waitress admitted she didn't know. Another waitress approached our table, and I asked about my cousin's salmon; she offered to get her another one but was unsure why the first one was served that way.
Despite the disappointing circumstances, we tried to stay positive and not complain, as we didn't want to spoil the celebration. I ended up paying $99 for a meal that I could have gotten elsewhere for about $30, with much better service. I was really disappointed because I had only heard good things about Southern Social. Maybe it was just an off night, but we also had to wait a long time for our checks. We were the last to leave the patio area.
Overall, I don't think I will return to Southern Social again. It was not a good experience, and it was overpriced.
