This place was just delightful. It was my first experience at a bed and breakfast, and I have a feeling that Southmoreland has spoiled me!
We arrived at 4:30pm on Friday (that's the earliest you can check in). Our innkeeper was SO nice. He helped bring our bags in, and gave us a tour of the beautiful mansion.
There are so many rooms here! There's a entertainment room (with comfy couches, a TV, and lots of movies and games to choose from), a drawing room (chairs, swing, beautiful view to the outdoors), a beautiful large kitchen, and an amazing outdoor seating area with waterfalls and a gorgeous atmosphere. There's also a cuuute gray kitty that lives on the property (Frank Sinatra). Don't worry...he lives outside, so if you have cat allergies you'll be fine.
After the tour, the innkeeper showed us to our room.
We stayed in the August Meyer, which is on the first floor. It was beautiful, and had a nautical theme. The room was spacious enough for two, and the bathroom was quite large and had a jacuzzi tub for two. There were also free fresh apples and complimentary sherry in our room! Wow.
Southmoreland does a LOT for its guests. Everyday from 4:30-6pm, there are complimentary hors d'oeuvres and wine for the guests. From 8pm-11pm, there are complimentary freshly baked cookies, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. Yum!
Every morning, there was a paper at our door to read, which was nice. There's an honor bar in the lobby, which has soda and snacks.
Of course, you can't have a bed and breakfast without breakfast, and this definitely didn't disappoint. Our breakfasts on both mornings were OUT OF THIS WORLD. So good! I smell a culinary degree somewhere...
Southmoreland was steps away from the Plaza, which was nice. It was also centrally located, so everywhere we wanted to visit on the trip (the plaza, union station, downtown, power and lights district, museums, etc) was SUPER close. Nothing was more than a 10 minute drive away, which was fantastic!
The staff there was also so nice. Every single person, from the innkeeper to the housekeeper, to the owners themselves were SO nice. They were genuinely nice people, and did everything to make sure their guests were comfortable.
So why doesn't Southmoreland get 5 stars from me? I have a few gripes:
- thin walls: I could hear the people above us walking around every so often. It wasn't frequent, but it was annoying nonetheless. I would recommend staying on the top floor to avoid this issue.
- parking is TIGHT! There are 8 or 9 parking spots, and it was an exercise in driving finesse to get in and out of the tiny lot. Wow.
- it's not cheap AT ALL. The August Meyer was $190 per night. I think the cheapest room there is $150 a night, and if you want to stay in the Carriage House, expect to shell out $250 a night.
Despite the few drawbacks, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. It was awesome. Just awesome.
