We were at Southmoreland for a family reunion (10 adults in their 60s and 70s). We reserved the entire Main House and, overall, had a wonderful time. The Inn allowed us ample space to visit with each other, as well as personal space for each of us to which we could retreat if necessary/desired. The use of the kitchen was especially important, as we could prepare meals for a larger group more easily than eating out or carrying in. We did experience several concerns about the stay involving access to the Inn that were immediately communicated to Southmoreland staff. Responses from staff were timely, and we believe Southmoreland is working to implement process changes that will ensure these problems do not occur for future visitors. Overall, our family reunion was a positive experience, so much so that everyone agreed it would be acceptable to return to Southmoreland for our next reunion.

Quiet street within a short walk of plaza restaurants. Everything was clean and light. Beautiful mutual spaces. Coffee bar was nice and had several Monin syrups. Jetted tub worked well. Room was spacious. A lot more cost effective than a hotel.

It had been twenty or more years since our last visit to Southmoreland and during our recent stay, we were very disappointed with our accommodations and the lack of attention to details. The inn looked shabby and not very well maintained. This was evident when we approached the entryway as the wooden walkway was in need of replacement and the paint on the door and frame was chipped. Upon entering the door, we were met by soiled and frayed carpet. There was no attendant to greet us or show us to our room. In the past, wine and cookies were provided in the sunroom and/or dining room but sadly, these amenities were missing. Our room had hair on the floor of the bathroom, the windowsill and headboard of the bed were dusty and even though I wiped the light over the bathroom sink, without cleaning products, I was not able to clean it thoroughly therefore it did not provide ample light. The balcony floor appeared to have been swept but otherwise, it was dirty. The bathroom lacked a magnifying mirror, facial soap and a table to hold our toiletries. Although the outside temperature was well into the 70s, winterweight linens were still on the bed and because the temperature in the room is centrally controlled, we were unable to sleep comfortably. Southmoreland was known for its lovely breakfasts but this visit, no breakfast was provided, not even stale sweet rolls. We have shared our experience with several people for whom Southmoreland was their "go to" place to stay when visiting Kansas City. It is with sadness that we will be looking for a different inn that lives up to its reputation. Thank you. Fran Crouch

I'm sure this place was fantastic at one point, but it feels like a steadily dying bed and breakfast. Tailored towards couples with no young kids allowed, but the beds squeak loud enough that your neighbors will know what you're up to. No breakfast, but yet, I am still paying noticeably more than a hotel with breakfast. Carpet staples are still in the steps. You can't spend 1/2 a day with pliers to pull them out? I think it has a lot of potential, but without the owner making up some differences in hospitality, it's not worth more than a hotel.

A wonderful place to stay in KC. In a fairly quiet neighborhood and barely heard a peep during my stay, granted there weren’t many there. Minimal staff on-site, but they make accommodations self-sufficient with ample sitting and dining space, along with available dinnerware (cleaned by staff). I stayed in the Russel & Clara Stover room, with jetted tub. If I had to list any concerns, there is no elevator and my room was on the third floor, so not good for those with mobility issues. Would highly recommend and would love to stay again, should I revisit the area.

We’re from the KC area and wanted a little celebration getaway - we loved the coziness, attention to detail, and location. The house was calm and we were able to have a quiet morning enjoying coffee in the beautiful sunroom.

I had the absolute best nights sleep between the quiet house and the comfortable bed. It was a lovely place to stay and a much better choice than a hotel. The location was perfect and easy off the street parking was nice.

We had the best staycation at the Southmoreland boutique hotel in Kansas City (near the Country Club Plaza). Our room had a large and comfortable bed, a jacuzzi tub, a keurig in the room, and more. The rooms and personal bathrooms are immaculate and clean. This boutique hotel is walking distance from the Country Club Plaza and close to several brunch spots and coffee shops. There is a back patio with a fireplace and several spots to enjoy a morning coffee. Make sure to hang out in the stunning dining room, the patio room, and the beautiful living space to enjoy the full stay. The reservation and check-in process is seamless. Whether you are in town looking for a place to stay, or a current resident wanting a staycation, the Southmoreland on the Plaza should be at the top of your search list!

Yelp
What a wonderful place for the price. The room is very clean and comfy. The bathroom is super awesome. We'll be back.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our Valentine's Day weekend stay at this cute bed and breakfast situated just blocks from the Country Club Plaza!!! I would have given it 5 stars except we did run into a couple of nuisances. The good: Most of the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The first night we checked in, there were even some chocolate dipped strawberries waiting in our room. A small, unexpected gesture that really impressed us. The decor throughout the establishment was mid-century modern and created a warm, inviting environment for guests. Their weekend breakfast service was also pretty delicious! We stayed in the "Clara & Russell Stover" room up on the third floor. The room was nicely decorated, the bed was quite comfy, and we LOVED the jacuzzi tub! The not-so-great: The house ran kind of cold. Our room had a small electric heater but we had to run it continuously to keep the temperature above 65 degrees throughout the day/night. Also, while the breakfast was quite good, their breakfast booking system (weekends only) didn't save my dietary restrictions, and the lack of communication on how exactly breakfast worked left me low on options. The girl that was working on Valentine's Day proper mentioned she was newer so asked the head chef about my concerns. Unfortunately, the chef was probably the only unpleasant person I had to deal with. She seemed fairly combative on any concerns that I mentioned. Overall, we both loved our stay and would likely stay again if we are ever in need of a weekend getaway in the Plaza. However, at $250/night, it did slightly disappoint us that the last interaction we had was with the defensive chef. We will probably try out a couple of other hideaways before we circle back to Southmoreland.

Yelp
I wouldn't consider any other hotel, hostel, room, or inn for my future Kansas City visits. This place is the cat's meow. Check-in is at 4:30, and if you're early like us, you can relax in the sitting room and have some water while you play a game. You'll get a tour of the property and review "housekeeping" notes. Each evening, you're asked to put in your breakfast order for the next morning - you choose the seating time and request half or full portions. Breakfast is absolutely OUTSTANDING! It was different everyday and so tasty. The barbecue breakfast on Saturday was so special - I didn't know you can grill french toast. I can't skip talking about the sleep quality, because the bed in Thomas Hart Benton is out of this world comfortable. I swear, it was as if I settled down and didn't move an inch. All the sherry they leave you for the evening probably contributed to my restfulness. Speaking of amenities, we only enjoyed evening wine and snacks once because we were out all day, but we enjoyed cookies ALL THE NIGHTS. The place is immaculate, hot water pressure top notch, and linens soft. Above all, Nancy, Rebecca, Angela, and all the innkeepers were so welcoming. It's staffed 24 hours a day, so it all the charm and warmth of a B&B with the security and services of a hotel. I can't think of a negative thing to say. Even the parking situation, that some people found challenging, wasn't that bad. TLDR: It's an easy drive to basically anywhere in the KC region. I don't recommend pickup trucks or oversized vehicles in the parking lot. There is plenty of street parking.

Yelp
My wife and her sister planned this as a chance for us to get together for a fun weekend (they live in Omaha, NE and we live in Columbus, OH). We picked Kansas City since we would be passing thru there on our way to Denver and my sister-in-law recommended this place as a BnB that she had stayed at in the past. This is an urban BnB in the Plaza District of Kansas City. From the Inn, it is an easy walk to the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum and to the "downtown" or Plaza District. The plaza district offers wide variety of shopping and dining opportunities and you don't need your car. The rooms are all unique and I would urge you to check their web-site before selecting a room. Our rooms were both very comfortable and both had some balconies that would seat 4 (ours even had swing). The real treat, however, was their "BBQ breakfast" (Saturdays only and only during the summer and fall). Grilled pork chops with grilled French toast that was served with a bourbon, pecan dressing and croissants, juice, coffee, tea, etc. Sunday's breakfast was Huevos rancheros with some homemade bread plus the usual coffee, tea and juice. It was also an excellent breakfast but Saturday's was really special. They also have a "reception" from 4:30 to 6:00 with wine. One day it was cheese and crackers; the other it was a homemade Artichoke dip with crackers. The Artichoke dip was outstanding. Then - every evening - they have homemade cookies with coffee or tea. The public areas (an enclosed porch, a dining room, a living room, the breakfast room) provided nice areas to sit and socialize - not just with the four of us but with other guests as well. The owner was on-site (and cooked the Saturday breakfast). She nad her staff were all exceptionally nice and very accommodating. Please note that they have a strict 4:30 check in time but they'll allow you to hang out in the living room while they finish prepping the rooms - but there are no early check ins.

Yelp
We were very disappointed in this place. We rented Jersey Coates room and it was so tiny it was hard to move around. The bed sunk in the middle. The light in the bathroom turned the fan on and it was extremely loud. And check this out......bed post right in the middle of the view of the tv. I will say it was clean and in a nice location.

Yelp
Whenever I visit Kansas City this place is a go-to. Much quieter than a big hotel, and so much more character as well. Feels much homier! I didn't mind that they no longer offer breakfast here because there are so many restaurants to choose from. Love how walkable everything is from Plaza shopping to viewing the art at the Nelson.

Yelp
We have been staying annually at the inn for our anniversary for several years now. We have always had wonderful a time here. It is a beautiful home practically on top of the plaza and it's great restaurants and shopping. And just as close to museums. Although the inn has been sold by the owners that we knew here, I am sure that we will continue to return to this little slice of heaven, as long as the new owners continue to employ and seek out staff like Meagan. We were a little disappointed when we first arrived to find out that the inn had been sold, and that some of the special services that we had enjoyed over the years were no longer part of the routine. However, Meagan quickly made our stay a special and personal experience to add to our memories. By the time we left we felt like family. Well done.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for a mini honeymoon for three nights. From the second we got there we felt right at home. The rooms were clean and cute, our private balcony was also very nice and used every night. The homemade breakfast every morning was to die for and the Sherry in our room was a nice extra touch! They set up the iron if I needed it and I always had a glass of milk to go with our homemade cookies at night. We were walking distance to the plaza as well as a few museums. We will definitely be going back as well as refer our family members when they hopefully come to visit us in the future! HIGHLY recommend!!

Yelp
We had the best experience at this inn. The building is decorated so beautifully, and the room is superb. We got a room with a fireplace, and it was so nice to unwind with the fire at night. The bed was very comfortable, and the bedding was super plush and soft. We enjoyed eating breakfast near the gorgeous windows. We loved our stay and will definitely be back next time we come to KC!

Yelp
This has been our go to B&B for our anniversary for years. Unfortunately, things have slowly declined since the change in ownership. They used to have a lovely cooked breakfast to order, but now that is only supplied on the weekends. This morning we were "treated" to continental breakfast that included cold egg cups, cold sausage links and muffins. We had to find our own dishes and napkins. No innkeeper to be found to request warm food or even to properly check out. We finally left and then called from home to settle the bill. When talking to the innkeeper on the phone, she said she was in the kitchen. I find that hard to believe since I went through the kitchen saying "hello hello". If she was indeed there, she must have had headphones on and been in a nook somewhere. They have converted the garage that used to be available for the carriage house guests into another unit. This has made parking, even more difficult. I suspect that the two units share the same hot water heater, as I ran out of hot water in the bathtub. The happy hour used to have a nicely prepared appetizer. When we arrived, there was wine and beer, but nothing else. They used to bring a thermos of coffee with the newspaper to your door, at your requested time in the morning. Now you have a poorly stocked Keurig. Even though I'm not a big sherry fan, in the past, the room was stocked with a decanter of sherry for your late night enjoyment. It was a nice touch. I have always booked the carriage house at least a year or two in advance. Today I have cancelled all future reservations.

Yelp
The owners of the Southmoreland Inn (Nancy and Mark) take such good care of you - you'll never want to leave. From catering to your every dietary need to making sure you know where you're going, they really deliver five-star customer service. The Inn itself is beautiful - I'd recommend staying there when it's warm out so you can enjoy the amazing patio. And breakfast... IS AMAZING! The menu is different every time we stay there and it's always delicious. Plus, they'll customize it to your liking. We have hosted corporate events there - it is the perfect venue to make everyone feel comfortable, open to sharing ideas and it inspires creativity. If you're traveling from out of town, this is a no-brainer - perfect location, near the Plaza and Nelson Art Gallery. If you're from KC, you should consider a staycation here.

Yelp
I proposed to my wife in the Clara and Russell Stover room at Southmoreland in September 2008. This was actually our second night in the bed and breakfast. The first room was the Satchel Paige room which was a tad on the small side but resembled a cabin. The Stover room, however, was fairly large. I wasn't exactly sure where I was going to propose but this B&B seemed like the perfect spot. It provided an intimate setting that was suitable for such a memorable moment. It was from this very room that she called her parents and friends and told them the news! I still remember it like it was yesterday. The building itself is old and it shows its age but it is very well maintained and cared for. Unfortunately, the owners weren't in town the days we were there but the staff was fabulous. As another Yelper mentioned, the parking is tight but that's probably the only drawback. The location is fantastic as its pretty close to the plaza. The breakfast is fantastic. We had a half baked peach with granola and fresh whipped, a fruit parfait, and croissants. Breakfast was in the sun room and it was wonderful. They also had a very nice outdoor area. The also have a bar out front with snacks and soda. To this date, this is the only bed and breakfast that my wife and I have stayed in and I'm sure we'll go back in the future to re-live this moment in our lives. I think that selecting this spot to propose to my wife is the best compliment that I can give.

Yelp
My wife and I came here for a weekend getaway and we had a blast. It's in a great spot, close to the Nelson-Atkins, and within walking distance of plenty of good restaurants. The room was spotless and all amenities were easy to access. The happy hour had an excellent craft beer and wine selection. Breakfast was delicious (awesome coffee selection, too!), and served in courses. The hotel staff were very accommodating and flexible. Would absolutely recommend.

Yelp
My sister and I stayed at this clean and well-run establishment this past week. I don't travel much, but when I do, I look forward to staying at hotels. Since my sister booked the trip, I did not know she had made reservations at a B&B. My sis knows me well, and after a difficult time parking my car in their tricky parking lot, I was incredulous when she informed me at check-in that we were at a B&B. She said, "If I had told you, you wouldn't have come." Exactly. I immediately thought, "Uh-oh. We're staying in a house that PBS could use to film one of their clever British dramas. I'm a neat-nick at home; when I'm on vacation, I want to be able to make a "mess" if I want. I expected to hate staying there, but it was much better, and actually less expensive than the larger nearby hotels. Owners Nancy and Mark were friendly and helpful, as were staffers Cory and Renee. The breakfasts were terrific, snacks and beverages were complimentary or inexpensive (after hours), and the Kansas City Star was delivered to our rooms each morning. Our rooms were on the small side, but were tastefully decorated, and the bathroom sink and fixtures were modern and efficient. Pillows and sheets were high-end and comfy. We also enjoyed the private outdoor balconies. Rooms were cleaned daily, and beds were turned-down nightly. When I needed to print some Kansas City Royals tickets I had ordered over the phone, I simply emailed them to Owner Mark, and he printed them out for me. No charge. Standard "Hotel-ish" things you won't find here are a swimming pool, young children running around, vending machines, noisy elevators, "Do not Disturb" door signs, gift shops, and a restaurant. However, if you decide to stay at this wonderful establishment, you won't be disappointed. Nancy and Mark have a winner here.

Yelp
I came here at the recommendation of another bed and breakfast owner with the recommendation that these are some of the nicest people in the business. I was very pleased I made the call! Nice folks, wonderful service, high end accommodations, and very nice environment near to pretty much everything downtown. Nothing bad to say except the location is typical Kansas City: very weird driving to get to but once you have it figure out, very easy! Not sure what else to say; worth the effort.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our visit to Kansas City, and a lot of that was due to our stay at Southmoreland on the Plaza. The staff here was amazing- everyone was friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout our entire stay. There were 2 things about the stay that kept it from being perfect- there is parking, but it is incredibly tight, and if people don't "respect the lines" and the inn is full, you are likely to have to find some street parking and it is very crowded around this area. The other things is the room we stayed in was on the warmer side (though a fan in the closet did help)- it was definitely warmer than you would find in a typical hotel. Everything else about this place was 5 stars. There is a great deck outdoors, with plenty of seating indoors as well. There is a snack and wine social every afternoon, and the breakfast every morning is phenomenal. Breakfast served is "3 courses" with fresh baked bread of some variety, fruit, and an entree. While we were there the entrees were french toast, huevos rancheros, and blueberry pancakes. Breakfast is served in 1/2 hour increments, and you can let them know the night before what time you would like to eat. You will also get a paper each morning at your door, turn down service at night, and cookies before bed too. I really loved this place, and would definitely come back to visit here again!

Yelp
This place was just delightful. It was my first experience at a bed and breakfast, and I have a feeling that Southmoreland has spoiled me! We arrived at 4:30pm on Friday (that's the earliest you can check in). Our innkeeper was SO nice. He helped bring our bags in, and gave us a tour of the beautiful mansion. There are so many rooms here! There's a entertainment room (with comfy couches, a TV, and lots of movies and games to choose from), a drawing room (chairs, swing, beautiful view to the outdoors), a beautiful large kitchen, and an amazing outdoor seating area with waterfalls and a gorgeous atmosphere. There's also a cuuute gray kitty that lives on the property (Frank Sinatra). Don't worry...he lives outside, so if you have cat allergies you'll be fine. After the tour, the innkeeper showed us to our room. We stayed in the August Meyer, which is on the first floor. It was beautiful, and had a nautical theme. The room was spacious enough for two, and the bathroom was quite large and had a jacuzzi tub for two. There were also free fresh apples and complimentary sherry in our room! Wow. Southmoreland does a LOT for its guests. Everyday from 4:30-6pm, there are complimentary hors d'oeuvres and wine for the guests. From 8pm-11pm, there are complimentary freshly baked cookies, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. Yum! Every morning, there was a paper at our door to read, which was nice. There's an honor bar in the lobby, which has soda and snacks. Of course, you can't have a bed and breakfast without breakfast, and this definitely didn't disappoint. Our breakfasts on both mornings were OUT OF THIS WORLD. So good! I smell a culinary degree somewhere... Southmoreland was steps away from the Plaza, which was nice. It was also centrally located, so everywhere we wanted to visit on the trip (the plaza, union station, downtown, power and lights district, museums, etc) was SUPER close. Nothing was more than a 10 minute drive away, which was fantastic! The staff there was also so nice. Every single person, from the innkeeper to the housekeeper, to the owners themselves were SO nice. They were genuinely nice people, and did everything to make sure their guests were comfortable. So why doesn't Southmoreland get 5 stars from me? I have a few gripes: - thin walls: I could hear the people above us walking around every so often. It wasn't frequent, but it was annoying nonetheless. I would recommend staying on the top floor to avoid this issue. - parking is TIGHT! There are 8 or 9 parking spots, and it was an exercise in driving finesse to get in and out of the tiny lot. Wow. - it's not cheap AT ALL. The August Meyer was $190 per night. I think the cheapest room there is $150 a night, and if you want to stay in the Carriage House, expect to shell out $250 a night. Despite the few drawbacks, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. It was awesome. Just awesome.

Yelp
This year for Christmas, I decided to give both myself and the boyfriend a present by booking us a room over New Year's weekend at the Southmoreland. It was one of the best ideas I've had in a long while. We arrived on New Year's Eve, just in time for the end of the evening hors d'œuvres and wine. After getting checked in to our room (the Thomas Hart Benton suite, which we both loved), we left for the night to visit friends and ring in 2011. When we returned to the room, the bed had been turned down and there were chocolates on the pillow. Breakfasts at the inn were fantastic. They accommodated my vegan diet with hearty oatmeal for one breakfast and some incredible vegan pancakes the next day. The boyfriend was treated to eggs benedict on the first morning, but I can't remember his second meal. It may have also been pancakes, just not vegan ones. Fresh fruit, coffee, and orange juice were available at both meals. The rooms all had complimentary sherry and apples, which we enjoyed in our room in the evening on Saturday after getting back from dinner on the Plaza. They also served a late night treat each day: warm, homemade cookies and hot cocoa or tea. Great way to cap off the day! We did have a small (somewhat funny) incident where the innkeeper accidentally opened up our room when attempting to get the guests in the adjacent room settled. Good thing we weren't doin' it, am I right? All he saw was the two of us in our jammies watching The Wire, so nobody was traumatized and we all had a chuckle about it afterward when he called the room to apologize profusely for the interruption. No harm, no foul. I'd definitely like to go back in the warmer months when we're able to enjoy the outdoor seating on the patio and the private balcony. Really, though, I'd just like any excuse to go back. It was a wonderful place to stay.

Yelp
I was able to surprise my wife and drop in here for a night (she was very surprised :). We highly recommend this B&B to others who are looking for a place to stay. If you do stay here, hopefully you will be greeted by Natasha: a very friendly and hospitable hostess. The accommodations were very nice and comfortable. The bed was exceptional. The breakfast was amazingly good! Please treat yourself to a nice and relaxing stay at this B&B.

Yelp
There are different kinds of Bed and Breakfasts. Some vary in cleanliness, food quality, conditions of furniture, location. This location has the charm and warmth of a B&B but has the professionalism of a great Inn. Cleanliness: There is a professional level of cleaning and decorating that can not compare to any hotel you can think to stay at. If you thought of your most finicky clean freak relative .. you would never come close to the level of clean here. It is wonderful. I might be ruined for hotels. Even the nicest hotels have something dirty somewhere. Location: This very big home is located a 2 blocks away from the Plaza(a lot of shopping and restaurants) and the 2 art museums(The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.) We walked to dinner and to a movie. It was so nice to be able to walk and not have to try and navigate around town after a nice dinner. Food: Their kitchen is open and it is in the center of the house. During the early evening/late after an appetizer is put out in the dining room for anyone to munch on. After the usual dinner time there are freshly baked cookies every night in the kitchen with various teas and coffee available. The Room: Kathyrn Winstead It is not a huge room but I we didn't need a suite. I feared the queen size bed would be cramped, as we are use to our King size bed. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the bed was and how comfy the sheets & pillows were. The bathtub was small but had a HUGE wall, so that climbing into the bathtub/shower you almost needed a ladder. I found that I actually enjoyed the higher wall of the tub as most of us that have soaked in a bathtub note that your knees or toes or other parts of your body end up freezing, sticking up out of the water. I was able to soak in this small but very deep tub. There is a turndown service every night and chocolate put on your pillow. Food: Every night you schedule what time you want to have breakfast, the latest appointment being before either 9:00 or 9:30am. What is on the menu is written on a small chalkboard in the dining room. Vegan's and allergies are noted and are catered to. If you don't like onions or some other item they will not cook it in your quiche etc... You will not be disappointed. The breakfast is very good. TLDR: If you book a hotel and do not stay here you are doing it wrong. Clean, comfortable, quiet, beautiful, great food, and friendly place. Within walking distance of many places. This is a keeper.

Yelp
Recently, when I traveled to Kansas City to visit my son and grandson, I decided to make my experience different and I booked at the Southmoreland B & B rather than stay at the traditional Hyatt or Marriot chains. I am delighted that I did! Owners Nancy and Mark are wonderful, caring hosts. From the moment I made my booking with Nancy, I felt as if I'd made a new friend. The inn is immaculate! I am so picky about cleanliness and I can't say enough how beautifully maintained the premises were, Because I traveled alone, I selected a smaller room, The Mary Atkins, and I felt like I wanted to put my name on the door and make it mine from here on forward. On the second morning, when I requested oatmeal with bananas for breakfast, Mark presented me with a delicious fruit plate accompanied by homemade lemon poppy-seed bread and then followed by a yummy bowl of steel-cut oatmeal. Southmoreland is my place in KC! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This review pertains to the meeting space available at the Southmoreland - I've never actually spent the night (although I did peek in the rooms and they seem as nice as advertised). I didn't realize you could rent out a space here - it was a nice change from the usual chain hotel spaces. The owners served awesome cranberry scones and banana bread with banana/apricot smoothies for breakfast. Lunch was hamburgers off the grill with potatoes and an oreo sundae for dessert. There were 10 of us sitting out on a sun porch (with room to expand by another 8-10) with great views of their back deck and fountain. The only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is that the porch was either freezing or hot - with a forced air system, there wasn't much in between. Would definitely return!

Yelp
We just celebrated our anniversary at Southmoreland on the Plaza. We had a wonderful time! What we LOVED: 1) Cleanliness 2) Hospitality 3) Amenities - the sherry in the room was very nice, warm cookies that evening, great hors d'oeuvres, and special touches (turn down, chocolate). 4) LOCATION - It was so great to walk to the Plaza and enjoy dinner and shopping (movie nearby too, though we did not go), and walk to Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery or Kemper - and not a bad drive to go downtown either. 5) Lovely room - we stayed in the Stover Room on the 3rd floor. We read some reviews about thin walls and hearing others and this is definitely believable - so we opted for the 3rd floor for that reason and it was just fine. 6) Friendly staff - everyone we met was very nice Cons: 1) We were looking forward to breakfast after all the reviews, but that morning happened to be shirred eggs (new dish to us) - and we found it to be "okay" - omelets or quiche would have been much better. Breakfast was "okay" not spectacular as other reviewers said - we attribute that to the menu that morning. The Plum Crisp was "okay" - the plums were really hard, and the eggs seemed dry. After so many rave reviews for the food - we were disappointed with breakfast. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. 2) Small parking lot 3) Honor Bar - this was fine, but we've been to other B&Bs where the same is complimentary - it seemed a few bottles of water and a soda could be free at the prices. 4) Price was a bit high

Yelp
It's all about Talia. We are talking Creme Brulee French Toast. We are talking Quiche Lorianne with delectable poached pears. We are talking the best breakfast I've had that just so happens to come with a peaceful and charming stay at this wonderful bed and breakfast. Truly one of the best experiences of service I have had. Talia is an INCREDIBLE asset. She went out of her way to get to know us and make our stay special. Whether it was helping us find interesting things to do around town, or preparing delightful snacks for wine hours and hot cookies for bed. When we came in from a long afternoon she made coffee just for us. You need to visit this and experience this one of a kind quality and service for yourself.

Yelp
I chose the Southmoreland based on the yelp reviews and I was so happy with my choice. The staff here are incredible. I don't know how they maintain their amazing charm. I had a great stay, wonderful breakfasts, snacks and wine in the afternoon, sherry in the bedroom?!!! And I've stayed at other B&Bs where their idea of breakfast is sometime after eight. Sorry, I'll be working by then. These guys start at six. Plus, the day we were leaving, they arranged to get us a togo bag at three in the morning-they were in the kitchen waiting for me. I'm just worried their awesomeness is not sustainable!!! Then at the last minute, I had a major bit of drama with losing my phone. First time ever. The only people I could count on were the staff at Southmoreland to help me. And they made it happen. I can not say enough good things about this place.

Yelp
"Our favorite "STAYcation"" My wife & I live in Kansas City, but we love visiting the Southmoreland when we want a quick getaway, or to celebrate a special occasion. We have visited many times, and will be visiting again this spring for our anniversary. The cozy B&B is nestled near the Plaza (KC's exclusive shopping and dining district), but its location still feels private, and perhaps even "woodsy" -- due to the treetop views from the upper floor balconies. The place has a distinctly New England charm about it. The historic home is divided into beautifully themed rooms, each with its own unique character, so we've made it a bit of a game to stay in a different room each time we visit. We always check in, then take the short walk to the Plaza for shopping and dinner, and then return to sip the provided cream sherry while reading out on the private balcony. It is an escape we both love, and we've never failed to enjoy our special reprieve from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We love the expertly prepared breakfast, and always leave feeling pampered and rejuvenated. If you are visiting Kansas City, or even if you live here (!), you will love the Southmoreland.

Yelp
I spent two lovely evenings here-what a treat! Quaint, quiet, beautiful. My room was lovely and clean, with lots of little touches that a traveler appreciates. The breakfasts were extraordinary! The air conditioning was up to the challenge of the Kansas City heat and humidity.

Yelp
My husband and I just spent a weekend here. Personal touches, great homemade breakfast food, attentive service. We would definitely stay again and recommend this place, as this kind of setting and atmosphere cannot be found in chain hotels.

Yelp
Some of the rooms are small but what they lack in size they make up with charm! The real beauty of this place (and it is all beautiful) are the amazing people! Mark and Nancy and their staff are just Wonderful. I want to stay here again.

Yelp
For the value, the hospitality, and quality of experience, it would be hard to imagine a place in the KC area that could top the Southmoreland. I stayed here on a business trip and it was difficult to have to check out because it is such a homey place and I enjoyed it so much. The staff are, across the board, some of the sweetest, most genuine people you could meet. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and cozy. I was in the Mary Atkins. It was on the small side, as others noted in reviews, but I found it perfectly adequate and comfortable for my stay. The breakfast menus are creative and they are equally delicious (I purchased the cookbook as a gift for my mother). Everyday there is a new twist with seasonally themed dishes. That my stay coincided with Thanksgiving, there were lots of warm fruity and pumpkin-flavored dishes. One thing that may be overlooked is the incredible proximity of the Inn to local restaurants, nightlife, and amenities. It is a quick walk to the Plaza and there is lots to see and do in the area. I am already excited about my next stay in January when I return to KC!

Yelp
Had a wonderful weekend at Southmoreland! Breakfast is very good and staff really friendly. The room was cozy.

Yelp
We've been to the Southmoreland two times now and it's always a treat. Everyone who works there is very welcoming, professional and really strives to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. The house is well appointed, feels very welcoming and cozy. The star of the show is the breakfast, it's amazing, you will not be disappointed. I never have to worry about having a great outing with my wife when I book at the Southmoreland. In nice weather you can walk down to KC Country Club Plaza and shop/eat/drink or just look at the fountains. It's on our top B&B/Inn lists. We'll be back!

Yelp
The SMoP should be a go-to for any serious B&B'er. Set just of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, the Inn's rooms are themed after famous Kansas City-ans and is really outfitted nicely. Also, the staff is fantastic and the food is really thoughtful and delicious. Prices are reasonable for an upper scale B&B. Go here!

Yelp
This is the second time I've stayed at Southmoreland. Everything is wonderful, except....the parking lot is atrocious. No space to turn around in the lot. Pretty much expect to get your car dinged if you park in their tiny lot. You're much better off parking on the street.

Yelp
Southmoreland On the Plaza is an absolute delight! If I could give it 6 stars, I would. The innkeepers (Hi Nancy and Mark!), staff (Hi Natasha!), and housekeepers are phenomenal folks. The breakfast is AMAZING. If this was a restaurant we would have gone back every single day of our trip. I loved the breakfast (and cookies) we had during our trip so much that we purchased their lovely cookbook. We stayed in a quaint, quiet room with a private balcony, complete with fresh apples and sherry each evening. The decor was lovely. There are also two adorable outdoor cats that stay in their outdoor cat-house, mini- Southmoreland. The only slight imperfection is that parking is very tight (which is clearly stated on their website)... so only bring small cars! We are so going back!

Yelp
This was the 15th bed and breakfast my husband and I have stayed at, and it is top-notch. Climbing to the Bingham Room on the 3rd floor was a bit challenging for my husband, but we really enjoyed the comfortable bed with high quality sheets and the roomy balcony. We appreciated that we could choose the time we wanted breakfast and that we could sit at tables for two rather than at a large table with other guests. Each breakfast had three courses, one of which was fruit such as baked apples and poached pears with a raspberry-cherry sauce. Parking was tight, but at least it was off-street and safe. Innkeepers were genuinely friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We enjoyed having a glass of wine along with appetizers late each afternoon and having freshly baked cookies before bedtime.

Yelp
We booked 3 months ahead of our family guest intended stay as a holiday gift for her. Booked airfare after. The week of the reservation after not receiving a confirmation e mail or phone call called the hotel and they stated they spoke with a Sophia L**** (not us no idea who that is) who had called and cancelled the reservation after receiving an e mail. The week we called to get some confirmation our room was not available anymore. Upgrading to a suite not attached to the hotel itself for the other party that was double booked in our room AFTER we reserved seemed like a fair solution. That room wouldn't have been appropriate for our visitor because it was detached and this was an older single guest. The most discouraging aspect was it took a good 15 minutes of persuading the manager to even get that accomplished which was disappointing to say the least. If someone calls to cancel a reservation that has a different but close name than the reservation and doesn't know any of the names affiliated. It isn't even her credit card on file for the reservation. Would not a manager take pause to call the phone number on the original reservation to make sure this was not a mistake AND at the least leave a voicemail if they did not speak to anyone on the listed reservation. I'm sure it is a fine hotel but if you do not receive a confirmation e mail of phone call do not expect to have a reservation. I believe both the hotel and we have learned a lesson. I hope they review how they manage cancelling a guests reservation if that phone call is made from someone not listed on the reservation. Call AND speak with someone on the original reservation. In response the person who did call did have a "different name" it was not the name listed on the reservation NOR the credit card which had the correct name. The billing address on the credit card also had the name. If this is not information available to you as a manger you hotel is lacking some basic business practices. I'm sorry your employee apparently dialed a wrong number because my husband never received a call and he clearly knows his mother's name. Unfortunately you are not able to accept that. You can't accept that your employer might have and unfortunately in this case did dial a wrong number when trying to confirm a booking discrepancy such as this. Your employee made an honest mistake when dialing a phone number. You indicated they called again but reached no one?? Why would they be calling again if they already reached a person who claimed to not know any of the people actually affiliated with the reservation. Why not leave a voicemail if no one answered? It's very easy for you to put the blame on anyone but you and your staff you are trying to protect yourself. I would have hoped that as the manager using common sense, realizing you made a mistake canceling a guests reservation and trying to genuinely correct the situation would have been a given. Instead we were handed blame as guests, excuses and a very unprofessional unexpected reaction to our request to try and rectify it. Your guests will be fine as long as they don't disagree with a discrepancy as huge as canceling a reservation when a complete stranger with a different name calls to cancel it. It's pretty remarkable that you weren't a bit more apologetic and accommodating.

Yelp
We stayed here 5 years ago as a lovely treat while we scoped out the possibilities of moving to KC. Now, we live damn near across the street from it, and continue to enjoy this B&B ran by a husband and wife team. When friends & family visit, they always stay here, and we often join them for the fabulous breakfasts. It is expensive compared to a standard hotel rate, but for what you get (gourmet breakfast) and the plaza location, I think it's prices are competitive. The best parts about Southmoreland are: 1. The amazing breakfast!!!! Breakfast is top notch here, complete with a fruit, bread, and main dish course. Everything's made that morning, and the husband is an amazing chef. If it were a restaurant, it'd be one of my favorite breakfast restaurants in KC. 2. The complimentary services, such as the sherry & apples in your room, turn down service, chocolates on bed, wine & appetizers in the evening, and my favorite....warm, homemade cookies at night. Mmmm! 3. The rooms are themed after famous Kansas Citians 4. Porches on some rooms 5. Historic home 6. Pleasant owners & staff who put their heart & soul into this place 7. Ideal location- nestled in between the plaza and art museums...easy walking to dinner and shopping (but too long a walk for heels IMHO) 8. No TVs in rooms...come on, let romance live! :) 9. Sitting room with tv, bar accoutrement so you can enjoy your own bottle, and best of all...seemingly soundproof glass on said sitting room so you can talk without disturbing other guests. The not-so-greats: 1. Parking- There are a limited number of tiny parking spaces in the back. Inconvenience, but not much they can do about it as it is restricted due to geography & neighboring structures. 2. Room size- I've only stayed in the rooms that were $150 or so, and I find them kind of small, but it sounds like others do not. 3. Porches are not so private, as it is one porch divided between several rooms. If your neighbors aren't out then it's private...if they are, well then you get the picture. - Didn't notice thin walls while staying there so I can't comment on that. *When I'm big stuff, I'll stay in the carriage house... ;)

Yelp
We really enjoyed our one-night stay in the Ella and Jacob Loose room. The bed things were plush and cozy and the porch swing was nice even though it was November! :) Really loved the sherry, apples, AMAZING breakfast - and of course, playing with the cats! Some reviews have complained about no TV, but they did have a small/medium flat screen with cable. We didn't end up trying it out. The WiFi was good! The room was smaller than I'd hoped, the pics on the website don't show it very clearly. It's decorated nicely though, and had a live poinsettia for the holidays. It was a bit noisy because it's an old place, I think some more sound insulation would be good, but that kind of added to the charm and made it feel like going back in time. Or that might have been the sherry talking. Ha-ha. I was worried about the parking because of so many other reviews, but it really wasn't that bad. You can just pull up near the front door and ask the innkeeper to park for you, but we were able to park ourselves. We did however have a really hard time finding the inn, drove around for ages. Once we got there we were afraid to leave for dinner in case we couldn't find it again lol! So we were pretty hungry that night and I was disappointed you're supposed to pay for the snacks with cash. I didn't realize, so I had nothing but a few quarters. There were only a couple choices in the box, too. I wish for the price of the room they'd just include snacks. Anyway, so we were extremely glad when breakfast time came. :) All the people working there were very nice and it was really clean. We'll probably be back before too long!

Yelp
Another wonderful stay at South Moreland on the plaza. We did all our favorite things and eat at our favorite restaurants, all a short walk from the inn. This is a quiet getaway you won't forget soon. We are already planning our next trip back.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, what a wonderful experience! My mother and I are both celiac and have to be very careful of what we eat. This gorgeous b&b took such good care of us! Not only was our room absolutely lovely, but they paid attention to the tiniest detail down to the gluten free cookies for a late night snack. The mattress was amazing, and the sheets were the best thing I've ever felt. That was actually our first question in the morning - where can we get these?! They served us a gorgeous gluten free breakfast that I could hardly stop eating because it was so tasty. You never even would have known it was gf. The owners and staff were exceedingly friendly - I just don't have enough good things to say. And all this with the amazing location? The perfect spot! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Amazing. Friendly inn keepers, comfortable bed, fantastic view from the balcony, and delicious breakfast. The late night tea and cookies were a treat....definitely recommended. This is a Kansas city gem.

Yelp
There is no better place to stay in Kansas City. Most friendly attentive staff, with a morning breakfast that is to die for. Mark has taken breakfast to a new level. The best bed and breakfast experiences I have ever had. The only complaint I have is the parking lot its cramped and walled so precision is required so that everyone can park. That said the Southmoreland is so nice I'd park a mile away and walk if it was the only option.

Yelp
An absolutely charming surprise. I had to fill in for a colleague for a last minute business trip to KC and knew nothing about where I was going or where I was staying. The colleague I was traveling with called the Southmoreland and they were easily able to add a room to our reservation and change the names over for us. Our flight from Chicago of course was delayed and I don't think we got there until 10 p.m. but there was someone waiting up for us,, he had chocolate chip cookies freshly made, (yum) and took our breakfast order for the morning! The room was charming and while not big, it was still larger than my bedroom in my apartment in Chicago. Everything was immaculate, clean and cozy from the super comfy down pillows (I need to find out where I can get one), bathrobes in the closet, apples for snacking and sherry for a nightcap. Breakfast was a fritata (which I passed on since I don't care for eggs), banana nut bread, fresh fruit and granola yogurt parfait (delish), great coffee and juices to choose from (I got the orange). I wish I had more time to stay there and enjoy the house, but we had to check out by 9AM. So with less than a 12 hour stay, the impact was such that if I ever find myself in KC again or if looking for a girls weekend away I would definitely stay here. I've stayed in hotels, national lodges and air BnB's from the Waldorf in New York to an airBnB cabin in Acadia national park. This was my first Bed and Breakfast experience and it helped make a potentially stressful last minute business trip so much better.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stayed here over new year's eve, and enjoyed it immensely. The people were very nice, and we made friends with another couple staying there for the evening. The parking situation is a bit tricky, but otherwise it was great!

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here for our anniversary and had an absolutely wonderful time. From our time of arrival the innkeepers were welcoming and helpful. The food is magnificent, the accommodations are excellent. There are also those "intangibles". The atmosphere is conducive to fellowship with other guests which is really cool! The common areas allow for casual conversation, and in our stay were could say that we felt true fellowship with other guests, which was something we actually weren't expecting but were pleasantly surprised to have. I would highly recommend staying at Southmoreland on the Plaza, you will not be disappointed!

Nathan L.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The hospitality had been great, the rooms cozy, and the breakfast is some of the tastiest food I've ever had. Also very close proximity to an awesome museum and The Plaza shopping area.

Rae C.

Yelp
This review is only intended as a caution to people who might be traveling during the winter, when the weather is dicey, and flights can therefore be cancelled at seemingly the last minute. The cancellation policy of the inn is: guests must pay 100% of reservation fee of the first night, regardless of reasons for cancellation, and 50% of the reservation fees for the remainder of the reservation unless the room is rebooked. I am a huge supporter of local businesses, and prone to what I call "conference hotel fatigue," so I can't say that reserving here is unadvisable. But you should take note of this policy as it can end up costing you (as it did me) quite a chunk of change.
