Ovolo Southside

"How did it strike you on arrival?Industrial and a bit gritty, the Wong Chuk Hang district feels a world away from the luxury fashion and glass highrises of downtown. But with a new MTR station, the artsy enclave is easier than ever to access. Ovolo Southside, the city’s first warehouse-turned-boutique hotel, embraces the district’s industrial essence. The ground floor entrance that was once a truck turntable is now a pop-up event space. To the tune of and 80’s pop bops and disco, young staff will get your check-in sorted in seconds, followed by a tour of the concrete-floor lounge and its communal tables (perfect for remote workers), coffee bar, and pool table. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Handpainted murals and wild elevator designs confirm the hotel's hip and artistic personality. You’ll see lots of creative remote workers and long-stay business travelers, as well as Mac-toting startup types and stylish millennials Snapchatting the stellar views. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.We had been warned ahead of time that the “Mini” rooms were compact. So we upgraded to a Corner room, which was a good size (about 300 square feet). The mirrors that we saw in the lobby and fresh white linens looked striking against the brushed concrete backdrop. But the best thing about this room was the view—we watched sunset over Repulse Bay and woke to rolling green hills in the morning. In a corner of the building, we really felt like we could step right out onto the mountains. It was a soothing, nature-filled way to start and end each day. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed was really comfy. We were told that’s because it's a seven-layer Simmons Maxipedic open-coil mattress, topped with a feather mattress pad and then a feather duvet. Bed jargon aside, we would very much look forward to tucking in here again. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?Ovolo Southside knows what its demographic wants: Apple TV, industrial-looking lighting and electric blinds. The hotel is all about freebies: free Wi-Fi, mini bar, breakfast, happy hour, self-service laundry... the list goes on. And you’re encouraged to steal the “Loot Bag” full of treats. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathrooms are small but smartly designed—expect white-tiled walls with modern fixtures and a compact rain shower. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? The Wi-Fi is amazing. Not only does Ovolo Southside provide complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the premises, but it has partnered with major Hong Kong cell networks to provide hot spots throughout the city. Room service: Worth it?You can order a full meal from Komune restaurant, where the South American-inspired menu includes artisanal highlights like Pablo & Rusty coffee from Sydney and Pukka tea from the UK. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?We felt like we had a fantastic introduction to the property during check-in. The staff detailed every last freebie, what time to go to happy hour, showed us the 24-hour gym (which even had a cool punching bag) and also recommended we take a look at the neighborhood guide in our room—custom created for Ovolo guests. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. While you won’t find a spa or a pool at Ovolo, you will find all-inclusive services, including breakfast, happy hour, and daily minibar refills, as well as spectacular views from several points. You might also discover a fantastic work community of creative professionals from all over the world. Now that the Wong Chuk Hang district is connected to Central in just 10 minutes, we expect to see this neighborhood boom. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The artsy lobby area, dubbed the Komune Lounge, is the kind of place where you actually want to hang out and engage with other travelers. We appreciated the spacious workstations, fast Wi-Fi, free all-day snacks and coffee—it was like we had a co-working space within the hotel, with the added benefit of free happy hour cocktails from the bar (converted from a shipping container). Bottom line: worth it, and why?At the doorstep of one of Hong Kong’s edgy industrial districts, Ovolo Southside is a feel-good hotel that ensures a high level of service that aims to meet the needs of each individual guest." - Kate Springer

Ovolo Southside (Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong) 3 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"You don’t need us to tell you that Hong Kong and New York are very different cities. But it’s remarkable that, as late as 2014, Ovolo Southside can be Hong Kong’s very first warehouse-conversion boutique hotel. Of course, the mania for warehouse loft conversions was never really given a chance to develop here — but then again, from a look at the Ovolo’s elevation, it’s clear that a Hong Kong warehouse can be a high-rise affair, seemingly uniquely suited to residential repurposing." - Tablet Hotels

Hong Kong travel bubble: The best places to stay on Hong Kong Island - SilverKris

"Housed in a converted warehouse with expansive hillside views, this boutique outpost emphasizes activity-led stays, offering curated add-ons such as walking tours of Aberdeen or kickboxing classes. On-site dining leans toward inventive, plant-based options, and the Komune restaurant is highlighted as a must-try for guests seeking both scenic surroundings and active experiences." - Ink Creative Studios

Google
This hotel exceeded my expectations. The location is excellent with buses, the mall, and the metro right around the corner. There is a convenience store and a few restaurants directly across the street. Furthermore, the mall is just a short five minute walk next to the train station and features a huge grocery store, numerous restaurants, and plenty of shopping options. The corner room was comfortable. While the beds were a bit stiff and the couch was lumpy, the overall stay was pleasant. We appreciated the bottled water and the housekeeping team cleaned the rooms impeccably. The staff were a delight, especially the breakfast attendant. The breakfast itself was delicious even if the selection was a bit repetitive. The free self service laundry was an amazing amenity and a thoughtful touch. Lastly, the Internet is open and fast. It was easy to hook up my Amazon Firestick and stream movies and shows in the evening.

Service Standard of Staff varies but service by HK lady in glasses and long hair is very good. |Breakfast offers a set but the food is very average, however Filipino staff offers good service. |The room is very small and hard to walk around but has a good view of the city and is near MTR.|There is a Christmas feel at the hotel lobby.

Overall, unpleasant one-night stay for reasons below: 1. Water pipes were noisy 24 hours, extremely affecting sleep; 2. Disappointing breakfast - my friend and I ordered a burger and an omelette, quite simple dishes but it takes about half an hour to be served and only one waitress handling a full dining room. The hotel still has a good location though - 5mins walk to MTR

Google
A modern hotel in a very nice neighborhood, near a nice shopping mall. Also a train line is in the proximity. I didn't appreciate the concept of the hotel for several reasons: everyone can access the hotel as there is no option to scan with the room card and reach your room level only or the reception. Also, the reception didn't inform when a deposit was requested that the amount will be hold for a period of 7-14 days. This is not ok!

This is probably my 15th extended stay at Ovolo Southside since 2015. It has changed over the years, and while the benefits vary from trip to trip, this will remain my favorite spot for future trips. |Favorite parts:|clean, modern rooms, beautiful views, friendly staff, free laundry on site, easy access to MTR and seaside walk all the way to Repulse Bay and beyond. |I'd love to see the larger happy hour of past years return, and the on-site menu changes over time, but the pre-covid breakfast was my favorite thing that's not there anymore. It's always had a modern energy in the building, and was decorated for mid-autumn festival and China Day.

Google
There’s plenty to like at this place. The rooms are nice, and mine was clean. The public areas are cozy and pleasant (which is important because no desk and chair in room). The breakfast is so-so. The mains are okay but they cut corners, serving mealy bland apples and orange juice that seems to have been bought at the 7-Eleven nearby and poured into a glass. How insulting. So, don’t choose the apple and have tea or coffee, not juice. Yes, you can’t have both. That’s right, you read correctly. Such penny pinching really takes the shine off.

My daughter and I had an absolutely dreamy stay at Southside By Ovolo for 8 nights.|The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, and the housekeeping team did an excellent job keeping our room tidy.|Thank you for providing everything we needed.|The place is amazing during the day, but the nighttime views are truly breathtaking.||There is a convenience store right in front of the hotel, and a shopping mall is just a 5-minute walk away.|The MTR station is nearby, and buses are easily accessible right in front of the hotel.|Everything about this hotel was truly perfect.|Once again, I had such a comfortable stay, and I sincerely thank all the staff members.|I would love to stay here again in the future.||* There are two things I hope can be improved.| 1. Noise inside the room (The noise like air circulation)| 2. Waiting time due to the limited number of reception staff.

Google
This is a hotel with an interesting concept with lots of references to rock and roll. I liked the vibe of the place and the quiet surroundings. It’s very near an MTR station which gives convenient access to the rest of Hong Kong. One disappointment is the very limited breakfast menu which is entirely Western. Is there nothing Chinese won’t serving?

Yelp
Believe the hype! This place is amazing, especially for the price! Surely for any traveler (including families), but especially for the sharp millennial, or folks looking for a great work and lounge space. Perfect for folks who want accessibility (steps away from the MTR), instagramable decor, attentive staff, and freebies -- lots & lots of free stuff, including a daily Happy Hour!. We stayed here after leaving the Intercontinental Hong Kong, and before visiting Mira Moon in Causeway Bay. We had an extra long trip and wanted to try out the Marriot Design Hotels, and of course the hotel with the best view for NYE (Intercontinental). I'm Marriot Platinum, Diamond Hilton, & Spire Ambassador IHG; since this is a boutique hotel and not necessarily a Marriot, we couldn't get many extra perks from status. Nevertheless, Ovolo was our absolute favorite space, even compared to the luxury of the other two! We booked a corner room, high floor, and got so many freebies we couldn't count them all. Booked on Marriot's site and got an additional 25% off for best rate guaranteed. Getting there: We took a cab there (around $25 USD from TST) which gave us a unique look at the communities on the Southside. The location is to TST, Hong Kong what Staten Island is to Manhattan, just quicker to get to. Perks: So almost everything is free or included in your stay! -Breakfast -a daily Happy Hour with wine, flatbreads, and other snacks (5-7pm) -self-service laundry -Nespresso cafe & tea -pool table -mini bar -extra in-room snacks -slippers -travel bag -Apple TV -and some of the best views of the island from the ABOVE bar. PS - We even enjoyed two free cocktails here thanks to the hospitality of Joe, one of the managers. We didn't even leave the hotel for ANYTHING until our next to last day. Once we did, we shopped a bit at Horizon Plaza, then we tried two of the restaurants just down the street (Golden Monkey/Pho Bar, & the Italian place -- forget the name; wasn't so memorable). There's also a 7-11, and a Starbucks a few steps from the hotel, but also snacks and free-flowing Nespresso in the lounge areas of the hotel. Location: We were a little leery of the location when we first arrived. It's industrial; factories all around. But the hotel is the little oasis in the middle. We quickly embraced the scene -- especially the street art -- after walking around to find shopping and food. -Ocean Park is a 15-20 min walk down the street; one stop on MTR. Can see the sites from the hotel. -There's a walking track across the street; gym inside hotel. -Only two stops from Central Station; easy access to Disneyland, Causeway Bay, or anywhere else you'd like to visit in HK Improves/Mehs: -Breakfast -- it's a basic continental breakfast and the same each day. Would've liked an omelette station, or something made-to-order. -No heat in room; Staff will provide a small space heater if you need it. Works quite nicely. Overall, great stay. We're already planning to visit the sister locations in Australia, and we'll certainly stay here on our next visit to HK.

Yelp
This is not your usual 5-star hotel experience for my 5-night stay at Ovolo Southside, but 5 stars it is, or darn close. To borrow from The Talking Heads (go ahead - sing it), "This ain't no Conrad, this ain't no Mand'rin, this ain't no Pen-in-su-LA...". No, Ovolo Southside is not the kind of 5-star hotel with a doorman in a top hat who opens the door to your Rolls, from where you ascend to your 45 sq m room with a 4-poster, and a TV embedded in the bathroom mirror (even if the decor of the Ovolo room is modern, and some of the appointments, pretty spiffy). What takes it over the top instead are: 1) the youthful vigour that pervades the setting and the staff, embodied by the funky lighting, the frisky music, and cheeky signage, which will rub off even on older guests (like moi); 2) the attention to customers' needs: free wifi is just table stakes these days; free, healthy breakfast (some items extra) with an espresso machine (spelt "expresso" on the button)? Ho-hum. Free bottled water in the gym (which features Life Fitness equipment and a punchbag with his and hers boxing gloves)? Hmm - nice! Free laundry? That may already bring a smile to everyone's face, but having the consideration and generosity to offer, as well, free laundry detergent (and bleach too!)? That's what made me nod in approval. I'm not going to suggest that this hotel is perfect. Some of the rooms are on the small side, although my accessible room had a huge bathroom. Not sure whether it's just the accessible bathrooms that feature this, but the bumpy plastic covering in the shower area had a distinct institutional feel to it - I had to remind myself when I dropped the soap that it IS OK to pick it up! There were other quirks that made it tough to overlook - there is, par exemple, no desk OR chair in any of the rooms. Instead, I guess you're supposed to use the long tables in the common area, or, what, sit on the floor? Do Millennials have super thick bottoms? The elevators will not conjure up warp speed gifs, and no, you CAN'T access the ground floor using the stairs. The dinner menu at Cirqle is inadequate and not inexpensive. The location might not be the most convenient, depending on where you need or want to be when you're in HKG. That said, Admiralty is but 2 stops and 8 minutes away (including a good brisk walk from the one line to the other at the interchange). You also need to know that the area, which has a very industrial feel to it, offers very little compared to other more central areas: nothing in terms of shopping, and not a whole heck of a lot in restaurants unless you want to eat with the locals. There are al fresco food stalls that might make Western health inspectors pass out (the "food building" is on the east side of the MTR station, if you're brave). I point these things out not to complain, but to manage the expectations of anyone contemplating this hotel. I enjoyed my stay at Ovolo Southside, and would recommend it to anyone who is out for a bit of an adventure, and know what they're getting into.

Yelp
To start, my expectations were likely similar to those who look at this hotel, based on their advertisements. You'll see all of this on the room key, your room, and all over the hotel. Free WiFi Free mini bar Free happy hour Free laundry 24 hr gym Apple TV Posh decorations My hostess (upon check-in) made it very clear that the mini bar and happy hour was not a part of my "room". Odd because it's advertised everywhere that it's free. So if you look closer, only if you book through their website. I normally don't use the mini bar and don't attend happy hours anyway so that didn't bother me very much. It was just odd. Once I walked into my room, it was very clear that every room was of different sizes on each floor. My room was the smallest and could only fit a queen bed and 2 cabinets (one for mini bar (empty fridge) + coffee/ tea, and another for a safe + some room for clothes). I couldn't find a closet, turns out it's on top of the second cabinet. You have to leave your key card at the door to turn on the lights. If not all the lights turn on, there's a switch by your bed that you have to turn on. It's for turning off all of your lights when you go to bed, took some time to figure out, likely I was there for 10 nights so I had a lot of time. On my first night, my flight was delayed and I arrived at the hotel around 3-4am. I was desperate to take a shower and head to bed, there was no hot water!!! It was lukewarm. I'm assuming that it's like that every night around that time or just that one time- very unfortunate for me either way. Dial 0 if you need anything, but I didn't want to call at 4am since I only needed a quick shower. The room had a nice window that included a screen and a curtain (both opened electronically, not manually) - a huge plus for me What I did not enjoy was the fact that there was no table nor chairs in the room. I had to eat inside my room on some days and it was not convenient and very messy. The other cabinet was not close enough to the bed where I can eat and it was of awkward height for me to sit on the floor or stand beside it to eat... If you plan on staying in your hotel from time-to-time or for a longer stay, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. This hotel was designed for folks staying for 1-3 nights. I didn't get to the guest area, where the billiard table was + happy hour. I'm assuming they won't kick you out even if the hostess did say it was not included in my room package. It was not guarded by anyone since it was free. The gym was very nice and had most of the amenities, including clean towels and water bottles. It also had a punching bag that had different gloves available for use. The laundry room was nice but the instructions were confusing and mostly not relevant. It was literally saying, put your clothes in the washer. No directions on the buttons themselves, but luckily I figured it out. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Ovolo, but remember to request a corner room!!!

Yelp
I'm really shocked to read the positive reviews for this place. Now, I know, I was born about 35 days too early to officially be considered a millennial. But still, I live in one of the most hipsterish areas of one of the most hipsterish towns in the US. This hotel simply doesn't do it for me. I spent a couple hundred nights in hotels this year, and this has to be in the bottom three of my experiences. I had a tiny room overlooking an incredibly busy and noisy freeway. I slept terribly. HK buses are noisy and seem to run 24/7, and there are occasional idiots on their motorcycles and ambulances going by at 4am. It was a miserable experience! I have Marriott Platinum status (along with top tier at Hyatt and Intercontinental and Hilton), and even though this place is bookable on the Marriott site, it doesn't give any status benefits. Now, if you booked on their own site, you'd get free mini bar and mediocre continental breakfast, but how much can that possibly be worth in HK? The reason I stayed here is that I could find the place on various European and Middle Eastern OTA sites for around €60 a night. If you use Marriott's best rate guarantee, you can get another 25% off that rate. So I ended up paying about HK$400 a night. It was cheap, but I hated every second I was there. Anyone who pays the 900, 1200, sometimes 1500+ HK$ this place is sometimes asking -and then writes a 5 star review- must be a complete moron. At that level, you can get an amazing hotel in Hong Kong. Don't stay here at the asking price. It's complete sucker bait!

Yelp
I spend much of my life in hotels, so it's hard for them to stand out to me. This one did. With the new MTR South Island Line being open, this is a very short MTR ride into Central, and is thus quite convenient. Comfortable, well equipped rooms (with Apple TVs?), free guest laundry, free breakfast. Large by Hong Kong standards for the price (so... small), with good views. Plus, it's a member of SPG.

Yelp
Loved this place. Stayed here for a week for our honeymoon. Very hip, great art, and design sense. Room was a pretty good size and the views were awesome. Breakfast was awesome, my favorite was the congee (rice porridge-- if you haven't had it before try it!!!), and the bar up top has a nice cheese plate if you choose to stay local one night. Also: free soda, water, and beer awaits in your fridge every day! Awesome. Great to be a bit away from the chaotic parts of the city, and the bus to Causeway Bay is just across the way (42). We took a cab or that bus into town then used the subway to get around from there. Don't bother with a cab to/from the airport! Get the octopus card (put like 300 HKD on it) and take the train to Central. Once there cab over to Ovolo, and vice versa. Be sure to check out Tai Pan Reflexology for a massage in Tsim Sha Tsui when you get tired. The entrance is off the main road with stairs leading down.

Yelp
This was the best part of our trip to HK. A home away from home after the hustle and bustle of HK. The welcome and care by the staff (Margot, Horace and Sanesh) feels very genuine; great free happy hour where lot's of people mingle around drinks and the pool table; Everything in the mini-bar is free and gets restocked every day. Very convenient location right next to the subway, two stops from Central and quiet. Bed was very comfortable, apple tv in every room and great wifi. Get the corner room, worth the small upgrade fee with a great view.

Yelp
Fantastic hotel for business travelers. Free hi-speed wifi and HK hotspots, free minibar, free drinks in lounge while I'm working, free self-service laundry, free breakfast.... A very cool loft decor, comfortable bed and great shower. The staff are incredibly helpful and courteous. They all remembered my name every time I'd pass through the lobby. When my flight got in at 6am they offered to give me another room to take a shower while my room was waiting to be available and they offered me breakfast even though I wasn't yet checked in. I loved my Ovolo Southside experience.
