Southwest Conserve Area South Cape Bay Walk Recherche

A fantastic walk through varying landscapes and pristine wilderness to a remote beach in South Cape Bay. The track is now well made with boarded paths and only a few muddy and rocky sections.

One of the best walk in Southern Tasmania. This track from South Cape (Cockle Creek) to Lion Rock is old is worn out in places but still well maintained and can be done in 4;30 hours. The difficulty level is around 2.5/5 almost 15km return. The walk is worth when you reach Lion Rock. Please avoid this track immediately after rain as water gets clogged in areas and you may be walking in mud. Carry enough water as you could be exposed in Sun for at least 1 hour each way

We walked this almost 16km return walk on Australia Day long weekend enjoying warm weather. Took us just over 4 hours to walk, inlcuding about 20 mins on the remote beach - we were only ones on the beach for almost 10 mins and it is spectacular. WARNING - I had a large black tiger snake slither between my feet on the boardwalk. I was too busy talking to my husband and didnt see it until I was on top of it - I stood still, let it pass and then moved. It was a timely reminder that you must be vigilant and have a compression bandage packed with you.

Very beautiful track, the condition we went in was after a few very rainy days so it was quite wet in some areas. Generally your day hike gear would do when it's not so damp, otherwise bring some water resistant gear or just accept that a little wet feet might be in store this time of the year(September). We hiked the shorter trail to Lion Rock, it took roughly 4hrs there and back. There's some elevation here and there but the track is easy to read and well maintained. Getting there you may need an SUV, the road is unpaved and can be muddy. Please take care when driving as there are many wildlife in the area. Spotted a few Pademelons and a Wallaby close to dusk, and many more when driving out. Would recommend this day walk to anyone in the area!

What a beautiful walk it was to Lion Rock. Be prepared to get wet feed if you wear normal shoes, as well as wet pants as many plants and long grasses hanging over the walk way. The track was quite muddy at times. It takes you through many different terrains, you might even see a wombat, I only found it’s poo lol. Very rewarding views at the end with the crispes air you can breathe and all what’s still further south is Antartica. 4h return if you take your time. What a delicious adventure I’ve had. Twice in 2 months and thoroughly enjoyed both visits. Good weather. Good scenery, Tranquil and few others. Plenty of unique Tasmanian bird species and other wildlife to spot if time permits. I'm sure to visit agian.

This is a up/down to level walk on good trail. If recent rain, there can be a lot of water and mud. Boots recommended. It can also be windy. Weather can change quickly. The walk is pretty, and the beach is spectacular.

We walked the South Cape Bay track on a wet and windy day. It was still a great walk. The track is easy to follow and easy to walk. Great for beginners. A lot of varied vegetation to walk through. Highly recommended an a great Ocean view at the end
