Which U.S. Airline Has the Best Wine? - AFAR

"Beloved for perks like two free checked bags and often snagging a window seat even from later boarding groups, the carrier’s wine program is underwhelming: only three basic, low-cost offerings are served—Carmenet cabernet sauvignon, a Whistling Thorn white blend, and St. Roc sparkling—making beer (e.g., Fat Tire) or bringing your own bottle a better bet." - Bryce Wiatrak

Southwest Airlines is now my air travel 🧳 preference. How do they do it? … They allow 2 free bags up to 50 pounds to be checked. You can bring two carry-ons on the plane. Seating is first come first served. They bring you pretzels made by an all-women company and a drink of your choice. Who the heck does that anymore? I was in contact with at least a handful or more employees and they were all friendly and helpful. Allowing for the squishing of my legs that are on all airplanes (aside from first class), it was a fantastic experience!

Google
Missed a flight due to a delay that was non weather based and received 0 compensation. Rescheduled for the morning with no hotel or food compensation. Nothing more frustrating than promising your daughters you’ll see them in the morning after a business trip and getting unfair treatment from an airline. Also the audacity of the person working the gate C54 to say with a tone… “I called your name several times sir.” How did she know my name? And I was on a flight that was delayed. Additionally, the Supervisor Evan A. Was less than sympathetic or accommodating.

Google
a Special Thanks to Mr. Michael and his co-worker; and their Supervisor, because of them , today, We could feel humanity, while they did they best to solve our problems. We need more people like them. Some humans come to their jobs to make people's life more difficult. The Southwest Team in the other hand, did they best to make mine easier. Thank you so much! 🙏

Southwest Airlines is a standout in the airline industry, easily earning its five-star rating for its exceptional service and customer-centric approach. Flying with Southwest is always a pleasure, thanks to its friendly and attentive staff, comfortable cabins, and reliable service. One of the key features that sets Southwest apart is its unique boarding process, which allows passengers to choose their seats based on boarding group rather than assigned seating. This system is efficient and stress-free, ensuring a smooth and organized boarding process for all passengers. In addition to its boarding process, Southwest is known for its affordable fares and generous baggage policy, including two free checked bags per passenger. This makes flying with Southwest not only convenient but also budget-friendly.Another standout feature of Southwest is its commitment to customer satisfaction. The airline has a reputation for going above and beyond to accommodate passengers, whether it's rebooking flights, providing complimentary snacks and beverages, or offering exceptional customer service.Overall, Southwest Airlines is a top choice for air travel, offering a combination of affordability, comfort, and exceptional service that is hard to beat.

Google
We paid for “business select” tickets, our Seats were A1 through A8. People started to form a line way before the time frame. The time came to board and the employees was just letting people in line go. I was also standing in line near the front so I asked him and showed my boarding pass. He did let me go through and explained to the line that they were “supposed to go in order”. I guess I won’t be buying businesses select next time, if I decide to fly with them again. American Airlines usually goes in order so Southwest you need to do better for your customers who are paying top dollars.

Google
Your boarding procedure is a horrible concept. The flight attendants at the back of the plane of flight 931 to Denver were rude and seemed bothered to be there. Curly hair reverse man bun near her forehead and an old lady with blonde hi lights. Their short and snappy responses were not welcomed. They could use a refresher course in basic human interactions and better listening ears.

Hey Gorgeous You

Google
I had an amazing flight. I absolutely love the stewardess. Very funny exciting made me laugh all the way.🦋

Google
Always great flying with Southwest. 99 percent of the flight crew is always smiling, professional, kind and helpful. Clean seats, clean aisle and the aircraft as a whole. Lavatory is also clean. They provide a quite decent amount of snacks, more than any domestic airline I had experienced. Best domestic airline I've been flying with in the United States so far.

Yelp
I always enjoyed my Southwest flights. They're (usually) pretty much on time, efficient, friendly, etc. I love their free baggage policy (one personal, one carry-on, one check-in). I am sad that check-in baggage are charged now. I am undecided yet about their new seat selection policy. That might change how early people line up and how efficiently they get people boarded per flight. Or it might not have any effect at all. That is yet to be seen.

Yelp
Southwest Airlines was so very good years ago. They did everything in their power to accommodate their loyal base of customers. That clearly is no longer the case. My wife and I are scheduled to fly out of Denver tomorrow. It would cost Southwest nothing to switch her seat from the flight to Chicago Midway from Denver International Air that leaves Denver at 8:35AM to my flight that leaves at 5:55AM. The current price is exactly the same. However the new and the opposite of improved SWA insists on milking a senior citizen couple for another $178 to make the switch. If they continue to refuse, I'll drive home to Lockport, IL then drive back to Chicago Midway Airport to collect my wife in the afternoon. It's nothing short of senior citizen abuse. Shame on SWA. When I called and could not get through to the very unpleasant "understanding" customer service agent, I asked to speak to a supervisor. I then received a call from a different agent, because supervisors don't talk to customers directly! Shamefully yours, John K. Peterson, Sr.

Yelp
Still a happy customer and Rapid Rewards member. Despite the changes (slowly phasing in), flying Southwest is still my first choice (Rewards benefits alongside the Rapid Rewards Card still prove to be favorable). One recommendation I cannot stress enough is to download and use the Southwest app. It is very helpful, especially when schedules, along with any associated boarding times and gate changes occur. Don't miss out on these important updates because sometimes it is hard to hear these announcements at the airport (if they do announce). The Southwest app keeps everything organized and up to date (IRT). The pilots and flight attendants on our DEN to LAS trip were fun and funny and the gate agents positive attitude and humor made the boarding process efficient and stress free (this was the flight that experienced the schedule changes galore!) Job well done to the Southwest crew at DIA.

Yelp
Southwest Airlines is so good, and I hope Elliott Investment Company doesn't mess up a good thing. Please don't make them just like every other airline. I am a priority plus with Southwest, and therefore, I think it's the greatest airline in America. It's easy to book and has reasonable fares. Check-in is great, and flights are on time. The service record is great, and the people are super friendly. What more could you ask for? I'm gonna sit back, relax, enjoy my flight from Denver to Kansas City, and watch TV. I am in Southwest first class, exit row, and no seat in front of me

Susan J.

Yelp
I've always had good experience with Southwest. I will never go with frontier again even if I have to pay more with Southwest. I can talk to a live person quickly if I have a problem by phone and not waste hours of my time getting issues resolved or changing a flight. Only one star removed because it would be nice and if they had a few more luxuries but what's most important is that their flight schedule stays on track, their seats incline, and they are user-friendly online and by phone. Their prices may not be good as frontier but the service is 100% better and I will always try to fly with Southwest versus frontier, which is a nightmare after one try, learning that they overbrook and that if you miss a flight even if it's their fault you will probably be stranded at the airport and not be able to fly out the same day even.

Yelp
We had no issues with planes's or staff on the planes... The two planes we flew on were new and the on board staff were friendly and efficient..... Our only issue was on the ground in New York.... We were almost to the front of line to drop off our luggage... a staff member came from outside.... He closed off our line..... and instructed us to follow him a good distance outside‍‍‍ He also let us know that he excepts tips.... You would have gotten one if you hadn't taken so far out of the way....

Yelp
My round-trip flight from Vegas to Denver Colorado, flying Southwest, was great! My Southwest flight leaving Denver Colorado was flying out of Terminal C from the Denver Colorado Airport. Right now, there is a lot of construction on-going in the main terminal. Going through a security check-point to get to the Terminal C gates took about a full hour, including going through their terminal transit system. The C gate is the last gate from A and B. Southwest offers complimentary soft drinks, water, and coffee. They recently changed their snack offerings, too! Some of the snacks include pretzels and chocolate brittle! My flight was scheduled to leave around 6:10 P.M. on a Tuesday. Boarding was on time at 5:40. There were a lot of open seats on the flight to Vegas. The Southwest team had to rearrange some customers who sat in the front to other seats on the plane. This took a little bit of time, but we still arrived early in Vegas by 25 minutes! The flight was smooth with no bumps!

Yelp
The Flight crew of Southwest were very cordial and nice. But some of the passengers on the flight were rude and walked all up and down the aisles. Very loud. Chris and Steven from Customs was very helpful and assisted with our Flights back from Cancun. Also, some people who worked at TSA pre-check can not speak English ( small Indian lady) directed passengers to the WRONG GATES!!

Yelp
Southwest Airlines is one of the better airlines that we've flown. The flight we took from Denver to Los Angeles went well from start to finish. Check in at the counter was a breeze. Check in at the gate went smoothly. Seats were fine. Service by all the staff we interacted with was terrific. LIke the fact that there are not nearly as much extra fees from Southwest compared to other airlines. Will continue to use Southwest Airlines when the prices are right.

Yelp
NEVER book a round trip! Southwest has unfair cancellation policies. I made a mistake and booked my flight for the wrong morning. It was off by one day. Southwest cancelled my entire round trip per their policy. I called customer service and they rebooked me for the exact same return flight and the correct departure. Southwest refused to refund my return flight from the original booking that they cancelled "per policy", even though I was actually on the flight. NEVER book a round trip! If they ever cancel the whole trip because you happen to miss the first one, you will be out all of that money. If I would have booked two individual trips, they would not have cancelled the return. This is a terrible policy and just unfair. I have been a long time Southwest flyer, but now I will be seeking any other flights possible. Please be aware of this unfair policy!

Yelp
Good day, I definitely want to say that my flight from LA-Denver was very good. I had the pleasure to be served Amee the flight attended helped me feel comfortable and welcomed. But the most amazing experience was that Amee was a prior Dallas Cheer leader..... AWSOME!! all the crew where amazing plus the pilots did a good job.. keep it up and I will fly again. Thank you, Robert Bello

Yelp
I literally had authorized pre boarding and the front counter clerk Bobbi told me wheelchairs first. I know this. I travel weekly. Then twice she told me to move out of line and allowed other pre boarders not in wheelchairs before me. She treated me like a child. Now listen I don't take advantage of things, I am a responsible citizen but I feel pressed to explain to southwest admin my situation: I just had a procedure in my foot to reduce a tumor and it is painful...not that it is any of your business and my privacy is being challenged now. I was able to get the front row to have the room to elevate but not without enduring ridicule.

Yelp
Fantastic customer service. I'm ready for my next flight! I haven't flown anything else in 8 years.

Yelp
It is a very busy day here at Denver International Airport and our flight and gate keep on changing back-and-forth, but the flight attendant and customer service representatives are so helpful and guiding all of us to which is the proper gate. Very convenient escalators help you get to other areas quickly.

Yelp
Everything!! Was suppose to fly out of Denver at 910pm.... 1. Changed the boarding gate 2 waiting for flights attendants 3 Go to wait in pre boarding and flight has been delayed to 1010pm 3 delayed again pilots timed out at 1130 4 finally got pilots and we are leaving at 1am? Hearing attendant bitching that she is no longer going to SFO and got stuck with the San Jose flight. Flying for 40 years and never in my life had I expedited such shitty planning. Weather is fine by the way. So wtf?

Deb W.

Yelp
Southwest is broken. I've flown them for years and have always been impressed how their employees are empowered to do what's right. No more. I got to the airport early and my flight was showing a 10 min delays 2.5 hours before departure. So that's just the opening gambit. There is an earlier flight with room but unless I pay they wont put me on it. If my flight was 15 mins late they could. So after that flight leaves my flight jumps to 40 mins late and ends up being over an hour late. Next my connection is also hideously delayed, and the kicker is the fist office just doesn't want to fly. Wow. Apathy and callousness.

Rebecca J.

Yelp
All of the amenities that made me a loyal Southwest customer are gone. They've officially jumped the shark. I guess they do get you where you're going, but it's not a bargain and it's not seamless anymore.
google avatar

Yelp
This review is only my opinion. SWA has always made changes for the worse, in the past. However, they have done so gradually and always staying ahead of other airlines. Now, SWA is making so many changes at once or frequently that they are no longer a better airline than most. And these are no minor changes. They adversely affect the casual, frequent loyal, and business customers. The current leadership (If you can call them that) is flying the airline straight into the ground. The company founder, Herb Kelleher, would be so ashamed and outraged at the direction they are taking his once outstanding airline. What a shame to see this airline being destroyed. This is a golden opportunity for other airlines to poach disenchanted SWA customers. I'll be looking for other wings to fly with.
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
Traveling with dietary restrictions is always a chore, It would be a little easier if Southwest offered atleast one snack that is safe for those with GLUTEN allergies! Oreo cookies & monk fruit pretzels are handed out to all. When I asked if they had anything and i mean anything gluten free the flight attendant replied with "um i don't know the pretzels are vegan?" well that's not the same thing at all! and she didn't care. Please make staff knowledgeable on allergens and have more options for your loyal passengers who are in the same boat as me!

Yelp
ALISHA that works for Southwest Airlines was super helpful at baggage claim. She helped me locate my bag and assured me it was all good. She pointed me in the direction of the rental car shuttles and baggage for oversized items THANK YOU ALISHA
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
The southwest airlines usually departure and arrive at concourse C, where you can take the train to transit in between concourse A and concourse B, and baggage claim and public transportation. The staff working there is generally friendly, better than most airlines.

Yelp
Flight delays are never fun but it seems to happen more and more with Southwest lately.
google avatar

Blair S.

Yelp
So I don't like this airline, to me it seems really ghetto and generic! First off all you line up like you're getting on a bus! It is first come first serve! Just take another airline and pay a little more for your seat! He you get what you pay for and it is nothing! The movie selection is old and the food is terrible! It's over crowded and there is no leg room! The planes are old I am surprised they don't crash! I don't recommend it!
google avatar

Rusted S.

Yelp
Used to be the defacto airline for me, looking for a new one now. Airplane had maintenance issue, went back for repairs. Hour later, up in air, crew said they were going to hold all connections. Turns out, NOT TRUE (I know surprise, right). We actually missed our connecting plane by about 20 minutes, but they were kind enough to book us on a flight 12 hours later. We found another flight with a single seat open moved our eldest child to that flight. During boarding, they questioned why we didn't make our connection insinuating it was our fault and told us that they had to pull her ticket because it was over-booked. Funny enough, this is all in the Denver Airport, maybe common denominator after reading other posts. Meanwhile my son, my wife and myself are currently waiting out our 12 hour delay.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
Not a family friendly airline. Changed our flights and moved us from boarding group A to C and would not accommodate seating my family together.
google avatar

Les G.

Yelp
Well, after receiving a nice email from Southwest Airlines telling me how much they've improved and won't let me down, I tried them again. Yep, you guessed it, I'm stuck in Denver. I can't get into my arriving location until tomorrow, so in a couple of hours I'll be heading back home. Unbelievable. Beyond disappointed. Beware!

Irish J.

Yelp
I believe starting to charge for bags after all these years is predatory. Since you no longer prioritize your regular flyers, I will no longer prioritize you either. Extremely disappointed in Southwest.

Laura O.

Yelp
Chantal at gate C33 out of Denver to Pensacola today told me "I should've told her I threw my back out and now you're gonna have to wait" How would I ever know this?!?!? so I could board. how rude.

Brian O.

Yelp
I have come to a much greater appreciation for Southwest Airline's baggage rules and (lack of fees). Two of Southwest's competitors have some very aggravating guidelines when it comes to their "free" carry-on baggage policies. It wasn't until I did some digging and read the "fine print" that I discovered that one of the competitors had a footnote saying in effect that usually all of the room in the overhead compartments are taken by the time people flying Basic Economy board the plane and that will result in you having to check your carry-on bag for a fee. The other competitor had a footnote stating that their connecting flights might not have enough room to store a carry-on bag, so again, you'll end up paying a fee for your "free" carry-on bag. At Southwest a "free carry-on" MEANS your carry-on will be FREE! No "by the way ..." Another reason that prompted me to write this review is that if Southwest offers your flight at a lower fare than when you purchased it, they will offer passengers flying "Wanna Get Away" a credit that can be used towards the purchase of a future flight, AND the credit doesn't expire! Depending on the option you choose, i.e., such as "Business Select", "Anytime", or "Wanna Get Away Plus" the difference could even come back to you as a refund. Plus they don't charge you to the change! I'm not 100% sure, but I doubt any other Airline offers this option. Finally, it was somewhat difficult for me to figure out the steps to take to get the credit, so I called SW on the phone. Within 5 minutes I was talking to Michelle in Texas and she walked me through the entire process. On all of my future flights; if Southwest flies there, then that's who I'm flying with!!
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
The SWA Terminal 3 is sixteen gates long and of course our flight was at the farthest one. It was a completely full flight, however, I was able to preboard with a nagging sore hip. No problem!

Robert D.

Yelp
Had an hour layover in Denver but our connecting flight from Oakland was an hour late. The plane circled the airport about 8 times while pilots had a circle jerk. Saw the entire flight crew leave the restroom without washing their hands. The lady working the terminal was exceptionally rude. Had to spend all night in the airport and then they lost our luggage.

Edward K.

Yelp
Shame on you SouthWest, changing your bags fly free and boarding practice is loosing me as a customer, United here I come!!

D F.

Yelp
Worst airline. No seat assignments, sear saving and flight attendants do nothing when you ask someone to move their bags so you can sit and the 4 families attack you. I feared for my safety, my families safety all while the flight attendants stood there and admitted it was out of control.
google avatar

Yelp
Flew for the first time in a long while as we have been exploring via road trips. An early flight but the airport was surprisingly busy. The associates at the gate desk were friendly. The ladies explained about the 300 celebration for Southwest. And an associate came to hold a small competition with prizes - vouchers for Southwest. Fun! The plane had to be towed from the pad and then cleaned so it was delayed but this contest distracted some. We finally boarded and after a wait during which time one of the pilots came out and joked around, we were off. Service was fine and we slept part of the way since it was so early. No issues on the flight and I tested their new service of iMessage and WhatsApp texting available. Didn't work for me but I couldn't remember if my friend had an iPhone. And it was too early for my WhatsApp contacts. Arrived and disembarked. Luckily the delay had not prevented us from catching our next flight. The ground crew in San Francisco started out ok but the agent checking boarding passes was not great. Disrespectful and arrogant he belittled me for not understanding the pre-boarding process of looking at the screen as he doesn't announce which group boards first. He made all the gains if the rest of the airline crew disappear. I don't pay to be treated disdainfully. He needs an attitude adjustment. Flight back from San Francisco were fine. But the bitter taste has not left me.

Shelly J.

Yelp
My favorite airlines, and the best experience in Denver thus far. Best customer service. No tudes here. They always keep you in the loop on flight statuses. Occasionally, they overbook, and they will offer someone to volunteer to give up their seat in exchange for $$ and a travel voucher. I raised my hand , but others did as well. For $500 plus a travel voucher I most definitely will take the next flight home. However my flight home was delayed, causing to miss my connecting flight. I called SW, and they rebooked me for a later time, without any issues. A few days later they emailed me with their apologies and a LUV voucher towards my next flight. That's good customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
So, no meltdown in summer. Have you ever stop to think the airlines employees are like you. They must deal with grumpy customers who no fault of their own deal with venting customers and abuse. I know the rest of us would love you to pay another more on united or delta and maybe your bag might also make the trip with you. Grow up and shut up so we can enjoy our trip. Let that agent know some of us appreciate their hard work. And if you don't then walk to grannies house
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
I have used Southwest Airlines quite frequently while living in Nashville to get to the destinations I've travelled to. They have always had reasonably priced flights and have rarely run behind schedule. Flights may be full, but haven't seen them overbooked like many of the other airlines out there. I'm not a big fan of the open seating instead of picking a seat when you book, but other than that I do enjoy flying Southwest.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Always love SW. Very liberal change policies Friendly staff Great planes More legroom Dont like cattle call boarding method
google avatar

Tank G.

Yelp
This is one of the better representations of the embattled Southwest Airlines here in Denver. The staff there was very friendly and courteous and the terminal that they operate out of is second to none. Southwest has a lot of making up to do after the fiasco they had in December of 2022, during the Christmas travel season and this location is a great start. It was a breath of fresh air. My flight left out of here on time and arrived a bit early to my destination, which was a plus. The flight attendants were on their jobs during the flight too. They keep checking in with the passengers to see if they needed anything and were not over intrusive when doing so. I will admit that Southwest's planes are a bit outdated. They do not have screens on the back of the headrests or even power outlets at the seats. There is free wifi though. I am also unsure how I feel about the open seating policy. I guess, it has its good and its bad, depending on where you are able to find a seat. All in all, this was one of my better Southwest Airlines experiences and I would fly Southwest out of Denver any day.

Dan H.

Yelp
Well karma is setting in. Thx Bob!! Your corporate office not sending my final paycheck if finally getting paid more than I could of ever asked for. As a top exemployee here in Denver I just wanted to say thank you again. The 400 cut flights this year, skyrocketing prices which is hardly call you a discount airline anymore but is paying me high dividends daily. Then I got an early Xmas gift. Thanks again, the no more free bag thing I was like your literally blowing up a 50 year company
google avatar

Yelp
Will never fly this airline again if I can help it. My daughter and I retrieved our three bags and waited for about a half hour for my golf bag. When I finally inquired what happened to my bag, I was told that my golf bag was mistakenly loaded onto another flight which was due to arrive about two hours after our arrival time of approximately 8:00 pm in Denver. I then proceeded to fill out a form to have my bag delivered to the hotel where we're staying. It's 1:45 am and still no bag! I called the Southwest Baggage Service number at the DIA and was unable to reach anyone THREE times. All I got was a recording that they were busy attending to a customer. At 1:30 am??? They truly ought to change their name to SouthWORST!

Jennifer O.

Yelp
TERRIBLE customer service with SWA! ESPECIALLY in Denver! Over 14 hour delay and all some of received was a $10 food voucher and a whopping $200 voucher for a FUTURE flight?!? NEVER again will I use them nor any family member or friend. TOO RISKY!!! https://www.facebook.com/100000886777878/videos/1429200337633278/
google avatar

Ms. C.

Yelp
Denver airport Southwest reps are the worst in customer service. Two pilots timed out. They wouldn't give out vouchers but instead gave you information about vouchers. Refused to give out complimentary blankets as well. Horrible customer service.
google avatar

Delfina E.

Yelp
It's not fancy but isn't the worst airline I have traveled. It's a basic flight with no frills. The attendants have always been great. Even when they are dealing with situations. If people follow the rules it all works out. So if you have an attitude look in the mirror and ask yourself did I do what the airline asked. The seats are comfortable as far as flights go. My flights typically run on schedule with the exception of bad weather. I understand if it's bad somewhere else it can be a domino effect. If you're mad about the weather the airline has no control. Speak to Mother Nature but she might be too busy to answer your call. The pilots handle those planes great I'm there in one piece with all my fellow passengers. Oh please don't blame the attendants or parents for the sweet baby who is having a difficult time. I'd rather hear them then the guy cussing like he is in a bar. If the noise level bothers you buy earplugs. Now I'm not saying Southwest Airlines are perfect. I have been delayed but that thunder and lightning had to be waited out. The mom was doing her best to sooth her little one, my luggage made a wrong turn once, they tried to get it to me but there was the situation 6/21, otherwise my luggage usually arrives. Sure I miss the peanuts but the snack mix is nice. So follow the guidelines, delays happen, babies cry, Mother Nature causes weather, flight attendants do a great job and the pilots fly safely. Thanks Southwest Airlines for getting me there it sure beats driving!

Yelp
Downhill slide for a while now... extremely poor communication it there are delays! Sat for 30 minutes past the scheduled departure before anyone said what was going on and only because several of us hit our call buttons to ask! Then the excels an obvious lie. Pathetic!
google avatar

Richard J.

Yelp
Not feeling the love anymore.. The one great airline has made its final decent to Frontier status. They are usually my go too airline but now they are always delayed.. Last year was hit and miss, this year so far my last 4 flights delayed by more than an hour and another 2+ hour delay today.. stop it!!

Yelp
Best airline ever. Free food and free wifi is the best and is most reliable. I usually go with this airline and it never fails!
