During a recent visit to South Africa, my mother and I used reward nights to stay at the Holiday Inn Freedom Square. When originally arriving at the location, we thought the gps system had us in the wrong location because we were at a corner and did not see a hotel. The hotel sits above the farmer's market in a trading area. The area originally does not look appealing however once inside the hotel and learning more of the area, we grew to love the location. The hotel is amazing! The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. The guard at the hotel even gave us a tour of Soweto and took us to Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu's former homes. What a personal touch. The hotel at the time of our visit did not have an offical parking garage so in the evenings, we parked our car on the sidewalk in front of the hotel for extra security. The chefs in the restaurant are amazing and very accomodating! After a long visit traveling around to 4 countries in 12 days, the Holiday Inn Freedom Square was a beautiful place to come and rest. The decor is a mix of jazz and Soweto historical figures. I would immediately return if I was back in Soweto. Don't forget to stop in the Open Air Museum next door which tell the story of Soweto.
