Space Age Lodge and Restaurant - Atlas Obscura

"While traveling on I-8 between Phoenix and San Diego, consider stopping by the Space Age Lodge and Restaurant. Originally built in 1965, it was designed by Al Stovall, a man who made his fortune in the plastics and metals industries during World War II. Mr. Stovall designed five space-themed hotels: four in Anaheim, California (just near Disneyland) and one in Pima Bend, Arizona. The Pima Bend location is the only remaining hotel designed by Stovall that has retained its Jetsons-like feel. The lobby entrance is topped with a UFO with outer space seen throughout the decor—even the umbrella table by the pool is a flying saucer. The original Space Age restaurant caught fire in 1998—owners claimed that it was attacked by aliens but a malfunctioning neon sign appears to be the more likely culprit—but was rebuilt with the same outer space theme. Inside are murals depicting astronauts and spaceships, including the USS Enterprise. The food is typical diner fare with out-of-this-world names like the Jupiter Burger (cheeseburger with grilled onions and bacon). If you want a piece of nostalgia to take home, there are coffee mugs for sale with the iconic sign on them." - Atlas Obscura

🚀 Out-of-this-world breakfast at Space Age Restaurant! I finally had the chance to stop at this iconic spot in Gila Bend — and let me tell you, I may have just had one of the best breakfasts of my life. The food? Absolutely delicious. Every bite was cooked to perfection, and the portions were generous without being over the top. What really stood out was the amazing service. The staff was friendly, fast, and made me feel genuinely welcomed. The restaurant is also immaculately clean, the A/C was on point (a blessing in the desert!), and the whole place has this fun, retro-futuristic vibe that makes you feel like you’re dining on another planet. Whether you’re passing through or planning a little space-themed detour, this place is a must-visit. 🌌🍳🛸 Highly recommend!

The food is really good. - But: Open only 'till 1:30 pm Prices way more than advertised online No atmosphere inside other than 2 alien statues Service was treacherous! Slow, unfriendly, bad attitude... Too bad, it's been there forever and we were so excited to try it finally Disappointing experience

We’ve driven by this place for years on our drives between Phoenix and San Diego or Rocky Point. We finally decided to stop in for breakfast. We looked up their menu before we arrived looking forward to some of the nice breakfast items. Problem is, we got there at 11:15 am and they didn’t serve breakfast after 11 am. Odd that they cut off breakfast at all, considering they close at 1:30 pm. Why not just serve breakfast all day since you’re closed so early? We ended up getting a Jupiter burger (very good), and an open-faced chili cheese burger which was cold. We told the waitress, who offered to microwave it…didn’t know you could do that, but better than a cold burger. Service certainly wasn’t friendly or outstanding, just disappointing. Prices were not great and a sodas were $5.50. So, we checked the box and won’t be going there again.

I don't like to give bad reviews, and I like to give "mom and pop" businesses the benefit of the doubt, but we just didn't have a good experience here. First, the flies were a constant nuisance. I'd say at least half a dozen of them. They were pestering us from the moment we sat down. Of course, they were really interested when our food arrived. I don't even want to know what the situation looks like in the kitchen. Health departments require restaurants to implement measures against pests and insects. I've eaten at restaurants across the Southwest and I've never before encountered a problem with flies. Second, some customers came in the restaurant with a small dog on a leash. I noticed the leash said "service animal," but it didn't appear to be a real service animal to me. The staff didn't even attempt to ask whether it was a service animal or not. Pretty much every health department prohibits animals in restaurants. When I confronted the staff about it, they told me "it's actually illegal for us to ask if it's a service animal," which simply isn't true. The ADA allows a business to ask 1) if it is a service animal and 2) what tasks is the animal trained to perform. One staff member said "I don't mind if they bring in their dogs since we're in the Arizona heat." A restaurant has an obligation for health reasons to ensure that only real service animals are allowed to enter the restaurant, and the staff basically admitted that they don't follow this part of the health code. What else are they ignoring? I feel an obligation to file a complaint with the local health department, so I will do that after posting this review. As to the food, it's not bad but not worth the price. It seemed like generic Sysco food. I'll give them some benefit of the doubt here because I don't know what their ordering options are like in the middle of the desert.

We ate at the Space Age Restaurant I ordered the Denver omelet. It tasted like the cook , cooked it while washing the dishes. The hash browns was supposed to be crispy, they was not. When we first got seated apparently there was only the one waitress, and she forgot about us. She started cleaning the other side. When she finally saw us again after 10 to 15 minutes and she took the order. She did not bring our drinks out before the food. Definitely will not ne going back

It’s a place to grab a bite in Gila Bend; you can’t expect much there. Our server was great. Limited menu options, I wish you could order a side of fruit or a smoothie or more “healthy” breakfast items but I get it doesn’t make sense to with so few people visiting the middle of nowhere. My husband loved the chorizo. Onion rings were great with the BLT. No complaints.

My husband and I stopped here because there honestly isn't anywhere else to stop nearby. We both ordered from the breakfast menu and the hashbrowns tasted old and plastic-y. My husband's chorizo and eggs were still very wet and runny. His corn tortillas were dry and not pliable at all. My "omelet" smelled off and I couldn't find any cheese in it. It wasn't like a normal folded omelet but it was square and appeared undercooked. The bacon I paid extra for was the precooked bacon you can buy in a box at the grocery store. I paid $5.50 for 3 strips of that bacon. We didn't complain and just paid the bill and left. It was $40 total for 2 breakfast dishes and we both had coffee. Hey James and Jimmy, If I could give zero stars, I would.

Limited menu, but expected due to the atmosphere. We were the only customers the whole visit. Waitress was nice, although she messed up the side order for my daughter. No worries, we dealt with it. Food was good. Nothing over the top that I would go out of my way for often. Maybe try again in 6 months or so. We visited on a late Sunday afternoon.
