If you spend enough time staying in hostels, it's hard to go back to the stuffy, starched sheeted, uniformed weirdness of big corporate hotels. But still, I always feel some hesitation when booking a hostel sight unseen as the quality can vary so dramatically and the websites don't always give the full picture.
At the Space Hotel, I stayed in an executive suite, with a weekly rate of mostly $119 a night, and I could not have been happier with everything I got for such a reasonable price. I would go out of my way to stay here again.
The room: My exec room was very spacious and I love that you get a private fridge and tea kettle. I also had an amazing city view of downtown and the state library. Sure, there are some things to figure out with using the key card to turn on the room's tv and power outlets, but hey, you're on vacation for adventure, right? Also, everything seemed clean an in order to me.
Service: The people at the front desk practically climb over the counter to draw you maps of all the awesome Melbourne haunts that are just a short walk away, and they are there 24 hours a day. The very comprehensive manual in your room also has insights for every aspect if your stay, from cheap, close parking to laundry, and much, much, more. And while I can't speak for the shared rooms or bathrooms, everything I saw was clean and tidy and well thought out.
Location: A 2 block walk from this quiet hotel and you are basically in the center of everything. In this neighborhood there are amazing little finds like Trunk (restaurant), League of Honest Coffee, Manchester Press. And if you need free free wifi, good coffee and a picturesque place to work, head over to the beautiful state library just down the street. Added bonus, they have exhibits on Australian history and writing. The hotel is also right across from the lovely grounds of a historic prison, and down the street from the rolling hills of a nice city park. So if you start feeling guilty about all that great Melbourne food you've been eating, you can go for a run.
Transportation: 6 minute walk will take you to 4 car rental places all next to each other. You are also walking distance from trams - though I found that I could easily walk to just about everywhere I wanted to go.
Major +++s: Space Hotel has an awesome rooftop deck overlooking a beautiful view of the city! And there is a mini theatre in this place!! And did I mention the jacuzzi?? No, not the one on the 8th floor overlooking downtown (!!!), I mean the jacuzzi tub in your bathroom. There is also a large shared kitchen and dining area, and washers and dryers w/ a change machine on that same floor.
Finally, the front desk will loan you all the stuff you forgot - an iron, your hairdryer, utensils for the huge shared kitchen. (Americans, don't forget to bring a wash cloth)
