On the Grid : Space Montrose

"Space has been around for nearly five years, but already feels like a Montrose institution. The shop is filled with tons of Texas made goods. We love supporting our neighborhood store who in turn supports our locals and artisans! It's the perfect place to find a unique gift for someone you care about…yourself included. Soaps, jewelry, art prints, adorable onesies, and more! It's not hard to guess that the folks behind the shop, Leila and Carlos, are incredibly kind. From small beginnings they've made something special, and true to our hood." - Curiosity and Curiosities

My partner and I have been coming to Space Montrose for years. I've met both owners and they're super kind and recognized us as regulars! Space Montrose is the place I always go to for gifts for any occasion. Anytime somebody asks for a Houston-based shop Space Montrose is the first place that comes in mind. I love supporting small businesses and they really do have incredibly talented people's art stocked in store. I love Space Montrose and think it's something everyone should visit at least once!

Google
Love this store! They have a wonderful selection of gifts for yourself or others. Goods include jewelry, candles and bath, pottery, cards, baby, stickers, art and much more. This is also a great spot to bring out of town guests for quality, locally made Houston or Texas mementoes. Highly recommend!

Google
this was a fun little shop full of unique goods. I especially liked the map prints in the back and handmade cat plates

I discovered this treasure trove of wonderfulness while on a Where's Waldo search in local businesses. The store made me feel welcome with an old friend vibe. I felt like an exploring Ariel! There are so many handcrafted cards, pins, jewelry, etc. I bought a Honey Bunny pin and an artisan card. I forgot the name of the staff member, but she was awesomely understanding, and helpful, and kind. I plan to visit again!

Google
Great variety of posters, cards, stickers, artisanal candles and more from local artists. Got 9 unique stickers for $39, which is great considering some places sell stickers for $7 each.

Me and my 3 friends visited the pop up store in memorial city mall and it was an amazing experience the atmosphere was super mello staff was super friendly and helpful and me and my friends kept getting distracted by all the gorgeous art and jewelry. We rate the pop up a 10/10 and are planning on visiting the actual store very very soon.

It would be nice to have updated hours. I visited Saturday the 28th at 10:38 and lights were out and no one was there. I really like this store and wanted to give my wife something nice for her birthday, I ended up purchasing it somewhere else. She would have appreciated something from this store.

Google
What a special place! From whismy to witty to beautifully crafted candles, prints, clothing, toys etc — this is the perfect stop for a unique gift for a loved one (or even yourself). I always love going to quirky and artsy shops — so I usually see the same things — but this space was different, there were artists and artisans I'd never seen or heard of and the most marvelous random and special things I've seen in a while. I caught myself chuckling and ooohing out loud a few times. I left with two cards, the most beautiful dainty earrings, a hilarious t-rex ukulele magnet, and some hand crafted eucalyptus and sage incense cones. This is definitely going to be a spot I frequent in the future. Great space and great staff too. Oh, by the way there are at least 3 designated spots in the parking lot behind Space Montrose & Common Bond, I didn't know so I parked in the street.

Yelp
A cute shop in Montrose with local art and a variety of things to make a great gift! Parking: Parking in the area is a bit challenging. There's no street parking in front but there is some across the way if you can find a spot. I believe they also share a parking lot with Common Bond behind the building (and have a rear door from there to come in), but that lot is frequently full in my experience. Service: The staff is always amazing and friendly! Honestly it seems like they really enjoy being their and help bring so much positivity! Selection: If you need cards this is the place! Whether it's holiday cards, birthday cards, or random silly cards - they don't just have them but have a full wall of them!! They also have a lot of art from local artists which is great! Other selections often include bath products (like soap, bath salts), home goods (like wood accent bowls, candles), stickers (tons and tons of stickers), jewelry, and more! Their selection often changes too which keeps me coming back! Price: They have something for every budget but the prices can be a bit high since they do have handmade and artist things. That being said, none of it is unreasonable for the products and you can get lower cost items. Overall it's a great little shop and I'm glad it exists!

Yelp
Great selection of Texas based artists. There is something for everyone and the collections are well curated.

Yelp
Came here under the recommendation of one of my good friends who lives locally during a recent visit to Houston. Super cool shop with really unique gifts and cards. They have an online shop, which is great for me! Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute boutique store. Have a wide variety of items. Great if you are looking for a gift for someone. Plenty of Houston/Texas centric items. Candles, art, baby attire, jewelry. Highly recommend a stop in.
google avatar

Yelp
What a lovely store for unique gift ideas. I picked up a beautiful Good Luck card, a candle and some wrapping paper. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Very cute little shop with quirky and uncommon items. You can find jewelry, home decor, clothes, art, etc. I believe that much of what they sell is made by local artists. They have a large collection of greeting cards so if you need something unique, this is your spot. Super nice staff. Parking is shared with Common Bond (which can get super busy) but they have a couple dedicated spots. It's a great place to grab a gift for a loved one or a Houston souvenir if you're traveling.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
When traveling, I always look for a store when I can really shop local and support local artisans. Space Montrose is what I found in my search, and then it hit the jackpot. Prints, greeting cards, jewelry, candles, and all other sorts of gifts.... It's really a great place to shop for yourself and/or for others. The employees were also wonderful. If I'm in Houston again, I'll make it a stop!
google avatar

Zara T.

Yelp
The cutest little shop! Space Montrose is great for finding gifts and all things Houston. They buy from artists in the US, many of which are local, and sell in small quantities. Everything from candles to greeting cards to earrings and everything in between can be found at this store, and their inventory is always changing. The staff is very helpful, happy to point you to the artist if they run out of a certain item. Parking can be a challenge, sharing a lot with Common Bond, but there is plenty of street parking, and you'll get your steps in!

Yelp
One of my favorite shops in Houston! If you're looking for artsy gifts that are well made, Houston-themed, nerdy, queer, and/or just unique, Space has such a great collection of jewelry, clothes, bath and home items, and more. Most are local made and one of a kind. It's my go to for birthday and holiday gifts. The prices may be "higher", but that's only compared to gift shops with bulk manufactured goods. As most of the items in Space are either handmade or small stock, the prices are more than fair. The quality is definitely there in everything they sell.
google avatar

Yelp
I was thinking of going into Space, and then I finally did go into Space when I was in Houston. Makes sense right, since NASA is here. This is a cute little jewelry store and gallery. It's yet another lovely little hipster shop in the heart of Montrose. There's a lot of these in this part of town, but a lot of them aren't that great. If it was a little bit more cost-effective it would get 5. One thing they all have in common because it's in Montrose is that they are all expensive, but this one is eclectic and unusual and different and trendy all at the same time, so it gets nothing but love for me. And the gallery element really sets it apart.
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
I love this shop!!!! In the heart of Montrose, this is my go to place to buy a gift for any occasion. Valentines, birthdays, anniversaries... they always have the most unique and quirky items. It's a great place to stop by if your from out of town visiting. I love how a lot of merchandise comes from local artists and small businesses. Their cards are the best. Love the candles. Beautiful jewelry. Dope shirts. Cute random home things. The owner is so nice too! My husband also loves this place. Funny story - we both actually got each other the same valentines card for each other from here.
google avatar

Mia N.

Yelp
Extremely cute store that sells unique items made by local artists! My favorites were the prints which were reasonably priced, especially for the large sizes. If you are a fan of any nerdy movies or TV shows, there is probably original art from those fandoms at this shop. I spent a lot of time browsing the cards, I loved them all! Too bad I couldn't think of any cards I needed to send anyone because I really wanted to buy some. If you are looking for some cute Houston or Texas items that aren't like cheesy souvenir shop junk, then you should look here! I'd definitely like to come back some day to see if they have any new prints or art for sale.

Yelp
I came in to return a necklace that I bought and the person that attended me at first said they could only return in store credit. I've been here before and I had not seen her there so I knew she was new and understood that she might not be informed about everything yet. They asked another employee to help them and I asked them why they weren't able to return the money. I know for a fact I never spoke to them with a rude tone, I was genuinely very curious if this was a small business thing or what. This other employee looked at me very seriously and seemed bothered by my asking and said " I don't know that's just the owners rules". Made me feel like I did something wrong by asking. Now I am stuck with this $60 gift card that I don't intend on using because I don't see myself supporting this business any longer. Apart from this, the other times that I have been to Space, I can feel the employees watching me like hawks as if I am going to steal. I understand keeping an eye on people but I don't think I've ever felt comfortable coming into this store.

Lance S.

Yelp
Space Montrose showcases incredible talent. The exhibits are thought-provoking, and the gallery space is well-curated. It's a haven for art lovers seeking inspiration and beauty.
google avatar

Lynn D.

Yelp
The staff are wearing face shields (no masks) which is slightly concerning. They don't offer any masks if you forgot yours (you can opt to buy one for $20 designed by local artist?). I love their selection: tiny art, stickers, gift cards, jewelry, shirts, caps, etc. All products were made by artists and you can even see their social media sometimes!
google avatar

Tanisha T.

Yelp
I unfortunately didn't find anything I couldn't live without but they had some cute local goods! They had the cutest cards + lots of trinkets and H-Town goodies.
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
This place is so cute! Absolutely one of my favorite places to find gifts and Texas items. The store staff is helpful without being pushy and they consistently get new merchandise. The parking situation can be a little difficult but that is to be expected in the Montrose area. If you are looking for a hostess/host gift, a birthday gift or just something cute for yourself, Space Montrose is the place to go! I recently got a gift for a friend moving away and she absolutely loved the necklace and card!
google avatar

Madeline M.

Yelp
I got this frog pin from there - day to day it make me smile. Great selection of art, pins, stationary, and so much more! Need something unique in the way of fashion or art? Go here!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
The store is so cute. There are various items from apparel to jewelry to little chachkas. The store clerk was kind. I love the set up of the store & the ambiance. I got a very cute Sam & Davy TX hat. Great quality.
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
Space Montrose has been a longtime favorite boutique of mine. When I'm shopping around for a gift - for a friend or myself - Space Montrose first comes to mind. Why? I know I can find a unique, handmade item crafted by a local artist. And by local, we're talking about Houston and Texas. Candles, yoga tees, cards, coasters, kids/baby gear, jewelry and art. I especially like the pro-Houston and Texas items they carry.
google avatar

Lyn K.

Yelp
Great place for finding unique gifts made by local artists. I usually can't go there without buying a little something for me too. Cool jewelry, art, and other random stuff you didn't know you needed:)
google avatar

Candice W.

Yelp
This shop is more than you could imagine. The art jewelry and goods are delightful and well made. Come and look! I found some amazing things that I needed for my life and apartment
google avatar

jessie l.

Yelp
Staff was friendly, and there are some very unique and Houston specific gifts, jewelry, and artwork.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
Never thought I'd come here, but was looking for a gift for a colleague and decided to stop in, since I heard it was a good place to find unique items. They say everything is handcrafted in the US, with 80% being from local artists in Texas. They have jewelry, t shirts, stationary, candles, handmade wood art, prints, kitchenware, pins, baby items, purses, keychains, etc. Prices are really not that bad, considering everything is handmade and unique .
google avatar

Esther T.

Yelp
Amazing shop that features local artists, artisans and crafts. They have a huge variety of enamel pins and patches. Very reasonably priced jewelry from Rust and Pearls, Lovecraft and other local artists. I love all the bath, body and candles as well. All made with natural ingredients with amazing fragrances. If you have anyone to shop for... I'm talking about nephews baby, weird coworker, 100 year old grandma, or your best friend. You will find the perfect card and gift for that person. Did I mention the wall of cards? They are so amazing I have actually framed a few. This is a wonderful place to spend some time at because they have so many amazing things to look at. Also, everyone wears masks, the store limits its persons and it is impossibly clean. I feel very safe shopping there.
google avatar

Soojin C.

Yelp
Friendly staff; hip gifts, postcards, and art prints; pretty gift wrapping for free. I rolled in on a Sunday around noon to pick up some last-minute birthday gifts for a dear friend. I found a Selena birthday card (!) and some cute jewelry. My husband purchased a neat nintendo-themed Texas t-shirt. It looks like they work with a lot of local artists. Fun store right next to Common Bond. When I have visitors or need to get gifts or prints, I will return.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
I always find something special here. It's a one stop shop for anyone on my Christmas list and I've bought several things for myself as well. Such a lovely shop with a lovely sales team!
google avatar

L. H.

Yelp
I came here with hopes to find some tiny accompaniments to a Giftcard I got for a friends birthday. I was instantly greeted and welcomed into the store. I was trying to stay focused on my mission- but was super distracted by all of the great pieces and things in there. Cute little cactus plushie. Awesome greeting cards. Hand made soaps. Tons of great gifts. I got a cute little to do list notepad and arugula candle for my friend. I will be going back to treat myself to some jewelry and the artist prints were really beautiful and super reasonably priced. Who needs etsy? Just go here!
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
I finally stopped in to check out Space recently when I was in the area. I was not disappointed. I didn't have any immediate gift needs upon visiting and have recently gone overboard with treating myself that I limited myself to purchasing a sweet card on this first visit. However, I will definitely be back closer to the holidays to check items off my list. They really had a nice wide selection of items - from cute Houston-themed tees to stationary to adorable kids onesies to my favorite - so. much. jewelry. Including my favorite local designer of the moment - Modern Artifacts. The sweet clerk informed me that the inventory changes regularly and they are always getting new items in stock. So, I will definitely be sure to stop in again real soon.
google avatar

Vy D.

Yelp
This is a cute little shop that sells Houston artist products. They have a range of different things and they change all the time. Come and find a cute hand made gift for a love one or yourself. The products might seem expensive but the quality is worth the price, most of the plushies are hand made one by one. I have bought many things from this store over the year and I love them all. Do come with friends and see you can find anything you like!
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
Absolutely love this store! I was so bummed when I saw their old location behind Brasil being shuttered...but to my delight my friend pointed out to me that they were just merely moving locations! They showcase an assortment of products from local artists....anything from clothing, prints, jewelry, greeting cards, etc. etc. Everything they have is super cool. However my favorite part of the store is the baby section in the back. They have the cutest clothing and accessories for kids! This is a go-to place for me when I'm buying baby gifts which are a bit more offbeat and have a bit more local flavor for those especially hard-to-shop-for parents. They now have a much roomier and beautiful space adjacent to Agora. I love that the new storefront is much more prominent, and hope it drives more foot traffic to Space. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area, or if you're ever in the hunt for some unique gifts.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cool SPACE (ha... see what I did there?) in Montrose to find really awesome, local, handmade items. They have SO many things to browse at & choose from. We're talking everything from jewelry, prints, cups, shirts, baby items, you name it! They feature so many handmade good it's incredible. It's conveniently located on Westheimer sharing walls with Common Bond. It's in the hustle & bustle of Montrose, so a perfect place to stop if you're shopping along Westheimer or really looking for some cool/unique finds or gifts. It's well-sized shop, but there's lots of tables & shelves with breakables so be careful going in with kiddos/stroller/or big bags. My favorite part? They have SO much cool Houston/Texas finds. Necklaces, Texas shirts, all kinds of stuff. If you love Texas and/or Houston, this is your place to find the coolest items to fuel your passion. Items are reasonably priced. You can find anything from $15-100+ here. Employees are kind & knowledgable about the products. Would definitely recommend to any shopper looking for good quality & unique handmade items!
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
What a fun stop after brunching at Brasil! Space is a Mecca for all things Houston and handmade. Items ranged from Houston tshirts and gummy bear earrings to stone necklaces and Houston artwork. The prices seemed quite in line with other local artisan shops I've stopped at throughout the country. One of my favorite tests of a great business is if they greet you with a warm welcome upon entering the business. Check! Space did an excellent job at this. Highly recommend popping in if you're looking for some fun and local treasures!
google avatar

Audrey A.

Yelp
Love all of their products and appreciate that they all wear masks and provide their own hand sanitizer (they even sell them, they smell amazing!!).
google avatar

AJ K.

Yelp
Great little shop with unique finds and a perfect stop if needing a last minute gifting need. The inventory changes regularly so check back in on the regular.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
They opened a baby section recently. Awesome clothes for your baby to look stylish in. They also got a new artists designs recently that I love. I bought me a set of Leroys Place cufflinks, one of Tupac and the other of Biggie Smalls (So what if they were rivals they look great on my wrists =P)
google avatar

Gitana Susanna G.

Yelp
My visit to Space Montrose was inspiring, they feature a variety of local artist. I purchased a Point 506 screen print tee. I get so many compliments. I also did done some fun birthday shopping for 18 years old daughter. I'm looking forward to a few new items purchases. Makes sure to follow them on Instagram and Facebook they post items daily.
google avatar

Kaylin B.

Yelp
Space Montrose is perfect for those hard-to-gift loved ones. It's eclectic mix of goods comes from local artisans. It's always cool to read the artist's story and inspiration that goes with each piece. The Houston-centric items aren't overly cheesy or gimmicky, if you're looking for a 'welcome to Houston' or 'remember that time you visited me in Houston' type gift. They've got everything from art and cards to jewelry and accessories to clothing. Even handmade children's toys! The staff genuinely cares and loves to rep the local artists!
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
This is a fantastic store! It's filled with unique items from various artists. Another reviewer said like Etsy in a real store space and that may capture it best. What's great about that is, when I'm on Etsy half the time I wish I could see the time in person- here you can!! There was jewelry, candles, natural deodorant (I was super excited about that), tiles, mugs, clothing, kids items, and more. The owner was warm and helpful- she made sure to chat with each customer that came in and treated them all as if they were a friend. My husband and I are visiting Houston, and we each bought something, and I told her next trip we will be back again! Recommended if you are in Houston!
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
In love with this little spot. It's pretty great spot to find local artist work. One of their best qualities is that their stock keep changing constantly, so you'll always find something new. It's a bit pricy tho
google avatar

Naomi W.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go to this place for a while since I love local art. After at the common bond next door, I decided to go in. It was packed with works from local artists: posters, cards, jewelry, t-shirts. If you're looking for a unique Houston souvenir then this is definitely the place to stop by. I got a notebook made from recycled paper and some Texas themed stickers to put on my laptop. I want to come back and get a poster to put in my dorm since all of them were unique and really high quality
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Lots of really neat items in this shop. If you want a unique gift or a little something for yourself it is definitely worth stopping by. The staff was polite and there was enough parking at the time I went.
google avatar

Shannon C.

Yelp
I love coming to this store to find gifts and cards for my friends! They have so many Texas and Houston inspired items, and the people who work here are also very helpful. One time I briefly mentioned who I was buying for, and the woman working helped me find the perfect gift. They have a ton of variety in the items they offer, so I'm always finding something new each time I go in. Parking can sometimes be a struggle, even though they have specific spots marked for their store (they share a parking lot with Common Bond), but that struggle is usually to be expected with the Montrose area in general. You can usually find parking on some nearby side streets, if it comes to that and you don't mind walking a little.
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
I absolutely love this store and can't believe I just discovered it this week! I was greeted immediately and was given a quick run down of the store. Locally made (Houston or at least made in USA) art, soap, jewelry, cards, baby/kid clothes and toys/blankets, t-shirts. Just a really unique treasure (parking in the back) located right next to Agora and Artisan Vape shop. The employee I spoke with at checkout was super friendly and passionate about the store's mission. Entry is available through the front and back. Prices are reasonable. PLUS they were open until 9pm on a weeknight. Go here! You won't regret it if you like handmade, local treasures!
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
Really great stuff here! Bought an awesome T-shirt and pocket square as a Valentines gift and they wrapped it up really nicely! Perfect store to find unique gifts!
google avatar

Bee W.

Yelp
Love this place. Fun products. Lots of variety. Good location.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Love the ever changing unique finds at Space! This has become my go-to for baby/kid gifts, the most amazing greeting cards, and treat yo-self gifts! I am so grateful for the dedicated parking spaces in the lot. I know the owner has a hard time with Common Bond customers who think they are entitled to parking spots that are clearly marked for Space, it's great that she stands firm for her customers!!
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
This is my go to place for unique gifts, especially cool tee shirts, jewelry, art and note cards. Space Montrose sources their inventory from local and regional designers/ craftsmen. I love finding items that have a story, support local artists and that not everyone has :). Space also offers Houston themed items like coasters, cutting boards and Christmas ornaments featuring Houston murals and landmarks, perfect souvenirs for out of town guests or to show your Houston pride. IMPORTANT NOTE: Space shares a parking lot with fab pastry/ coffee shop: Common Bond. Do not leave your car in the lot and cross the street. It will be towed. I made the mistake of crossing the street to buy a coffee (to go) at Cafe Brasil after shopping at Space. When I returned, my car was towed. The parking lot is video monitored by the property owner, and if they see someone leave their car in the lot (even customers of Space/ Common Bond), it will be towed immediately.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
I like to describe this place to my friends and coworkers as a brick and mortar Etsy store. Actually a lot of the items here can be found on Etsy because a lot of the artists have Etsy stores. Everything here has been made in the USA and all by indie artists. You can find graphic tees, greeting cards, tons and tons of prints to hang on the wall or frame, jewelry, baby items, purses, candles, soaps, pins, keychains...I think you get the gist. Everything is reasonably priced as well. They rotate items and artists so it's worth checking out every once in a while as they may have different items. The employees are friendly too.
