"Beer with a View of the Bavarian Opera House Located directly across from the opera house, Spatenhaus an der Oper has two options for guests. The first floor has a homey feel with recipes prepared from old Bavarian cook books honouring tradition. The real highlight though is the second floor, which is divided into several smaller rooms and offers finer dining - to match the views of the elegant opera house."

We celebrated New Year’s at this restaurant, and it was an unforgettable experience. The menu was exquisite, showcasing a perfect balance of creativity and flavor—every dish was a delight. What truly elevated the evening was the exceptional service. Our waiter was absolutely wonderful, making us feel right at home while maintaining the elegance of a fine dining experience. They checked in on us regularly to ensure we were comfortable, which added a personal touch that we deeply appreciated. It’s also worth noting that the restaurant is pet-friendly, which made it possible for us to include our furry companion in the celebration. This level of inclusivity is rare in fine dining, and it speaks volumes about the restaurant’s commitment to hospitality. If you’re looking for a place that combines culinary artistry with warm and attentive service, this is it. Highly recommended!

Google
The best restaurant in Munchen if you ask me. Food is very tasty and portions are more than enough for one person. Service was excellent especially waiter from Slovenia and Italy. Whole ambient was also very nice because it's literally in the city center. I recommend it to everyone.

Google
The classic Munich experience. Spatenhaus an der Oper offers an authentic Bavarian dining experience with exceptional food, a welcoming atmosphere, and attentive service. Unlike the more touristy Hofbräuhaus, this spot feels refined yet approachable, making it a favorite among locals and visitors seeking quality over hype. The menu features delicious traditional dishes, perfectly complemented by an impressive beer selection, including Spaten brews and other local favorites. Its prime location near the opera house adds to its charm, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy great food, outstanding service, and a true taste of Bavaria.

Great beer, I can't really rate the food. Staff is too busy, but friendly enough. Worth to try.

Google
food, ambience, location are wonderful. Service was outstanding. Our lady waitress was so attentive, so professional, she noticed the smallest things on table and softly proactively offered either this or that. For Service I can put 10 stars. Thank you! It was a perfect farewell dinner in Munich. Next time gladly again.

Google
Less rowdy than the hofbrauhaus serving decent Bavarian staples. Don’t expect nuanced flavors. Protein, starch, wilted veg and salty brown sauce. Service is friendly the inside has plenty of open seating and intimate cubby holes. Have had meals here over many years and it’s a solid choice. The

Google
Pretty good Food, service was just alright. Ordered a soft drink during the meal. Twice. Finished the meal, then they ask if did you still want that drink. Ummmm no thanks though 😎 a little too pricey for what you get and the service comparing with other places in Munich.

Do not recommend going here - bad quality of food, bad hygiene of food, terrible management stay away ! We came for an early dinner before the opera and my husband and father in law both ordered the duck. They thought it tasted very gamey but didn’t think too much of it. Later that evening they started getting very sick and it turned out they had food poisoning from the food at the restaurant. They both ordered the same dish- the lacquered duck and they both got very very sick. They couldn’t move for 3-4 days. When I got in touch with the management at the restaurant to let them know about this they refused to accept any kind of responsibility claiming they “continue to believe and trust in our high standards in food quality and hygiene measures.” (LOL) They have done nothing to help us despite the exchange of several long emails explaining the horrible days we had with the poisoning. I understand mistakes can happen in any restaurant but the way they handled this was truly disgraceful. Both guests only had the duck and both guests feel extremely sick after eating the dish. Clear case of food poisoning. All for 180 Euros! In their last email the restaurant tried to claim we must have gotten a viral infection at the opera… given we are 4 people and only 2 (the two that ate the duck) got sick this is a really pathetic way of handling a complaint and a great example of how not to handle such a case Do better !

Yelp
Outside seating at night in September is always nice when visiting Munich. The service was spot-on for our large group with 4 tables of 4. The food was traditional, authentic, and delicious. I especially enjoy their red cabbage as a nice source of acid to cut the heaviness of the schnitzel and potatoes.

Yelp
My husband and I were seeking a nicer German dinner after a full day of tours and shopping in the rain. We were thankful for having had a reservation as it was quite busy on Saturday night. The interior exuded warmth with wooden decorations and dimmed lighting. Our waiter spoke English and helped us decide by providing us with recommendations. Given that it's Spatenhaus bierhause, we of course had to get a beer and I got a glass of white German wine. We ordered the Bavarian Cordon Bleu and Schnitzel as our mains. The Schnitzel came with a side salad and fried potatoes and the Cordon Bleu came with potato salad and cranberry sauce. The schnitzel was tender, not chewy and perfectly crispy! The Bavarian Cordon Bleu had almost no filling of cheese and ham and ended up tasting like it was just a friend chicken breast. The cranberry sauce wasn't as flavorful as I anticipated either and was quite disappointed with my plate. For dessert we ordered the panna cotta with berries, this was amazing! I would come back for the schnitzel, beer and dessert. Would not recommend the Cordon Bleu.

Yelp
We stopped in at the Spantenhaus an der Oper for a Hugo Spritz. The drink was light and sweet, a refreshing start to the evening. The patio is fantastic, offering a perfect spot for people-watching while enjoying the ambiance of the great patio. It's a great place to relax and soak in the surroundings.

Yelp
We stopped in here after a ghost and spirits walking tour for another Munich beer experience. It did not disappoint! We just had dessert and beers, and it was great. We had quick service, and our waiter was very kind and helpful to us silly Americans. The building is beautiful too.

Yelp
Of the big Brauhaus (brewery houses)( this is my go to and I would say the most German of them. Lovely outside seating but during the winter Inside is great too. Kind of the Anti-Hofbrau Haus. Great food for all (even vegetarians and of course Spatan Beer which of course is probably the big draw. If you speak some German, get the German menu as some of the translations are kind of odd, like in most places.

Yelp
A fabulous restaurant this is after a day of shopping or prior to a performance at the National Theatre or Opera House. Opulent white tablecloth upstairs. Carefree al fresco downstairs. Great service. A lovely dinner I had here this spring. Incredible sips of beers; wonderfully prepared was the seasonal "German Asparagus"; and, absolutely outstanding was their signature "Crispy Suckling Pig". CHEERS!

Yelp
Very nice spot for good food and to people watch. My waiter was amazing and super nice. He was super attentive, friendly and gave me recommendations on what to get. He said nothing could beat the duck so I got the duck. Definitely German food at its finest. The duck was cooked perfectly and the duck jus was just fantastic. I've never had German cabbage or dumplings and thought these were really good. I loved the texture of the dumplings. The duck paired so well with the cabbage. It really was a perfect bite. I had a wonderful experience, especially with how inviting the staff was.
google avatar

Julia K.

Yelp
We are visiting friends and one of them suggested Spatenhaus since we were staying close to the central station. The duck with potato dumplings was good. So was the brat plate. The bill came out to 70 euro with a drink and still water. Ambiance was nice. Service was relatively quick. Locals dine there so it's not all just tourist trap.

Yelp
Awesome food. We shared 1/2 duck and lamb medallions, and both were delicious. It is more expensive than many other restaurants, but the food is much better. Service was fast despite the busy Sunday night.

Yelp
Great interior and authentic decor. Potatoe soup was juat, ok. Beef steaktips in a really nice sauce, with spatzle. Overall good meal but not great.

Yelp
What I liked: - great selection of beer on tap - the Schwein beaten was an excellent cut and a good portion - the layout of the restaurant. There were a lot of cubbyholes and snug tables to make for a nice dinner chat. Was a bit disappointed the Hefeweizen pours were well short of the mark on a quiet night.
google avatar

Yelp
Spatenhaus was AMAZING - loved the energy and authenticity of the food and culture! We had a wonderful dining experience and came back the next night with our friends (we didn't know we both made a reservation - ha!). We took the house recommendation of half a Bavarian duck with apple red cabbage, potato dumplings and jus and the schnitzel with potatoes and cabbage!

Yelp
After many hours touring the Residenz we stopped in for an afternoon coffee and dessert. This was a charming spot nearby. The cappuccinos and desserts were all wonderful. The kaiserschmarrn with plums was particularly wonderful. We ate and drank every last bite. We would highly recommend this spot for an afternoon break.

Yelp
It's interesting to read the reviews (a lot of people seem to find things to gripe about). My daughter and I ate here our last night in Germany. We were in Germany two weeks and had eaten a lot of great food. Spatenhaus was one of the top 2, hands down. We ate upstairs with a view of the opera -- really great atmosphere and vibe. Our server was great. My daughter doesn't speak German, and he had no problems conversing in English. His recommendations were spot on and appreciated. In terms of food, we were a bit surprised to see oysters and carpaccio for appetizers. The oysters were very fresh and we both enjoyed them. The carpaccio was also a treat and a nice change of pace. The entree was a suckling pig dish. I had tried this several times over the two weeks, and Spatenhaus' was the best. All in all we couldn't have been happier about eating here for our last night in Germany, and we highly recommend upstairs by the window if you can get it :-)

Yelp
Spautenhaus has a convenient location near the high end shopping area and a short walk to the Munich Christmas Market with a bright exterior and roomy interior. If you want to eat something else besides traditional Bavarian food, you can get it here such as the grilled cod fish with quinoa and salad along with all of the traditional sausages, pork dishes and of course Spauten beers. Service was excellent for Munich as our waitress spoke English with attentive service that actually deserved a tip. Restaurants in tourist areas such as the Marienplatz will often ask for a tip even though their service is extremely slow and inattentive. It is customary to round up the total and don't feel obligated to tip 10-20% as there is already a 19% tax unless you get tip worthy service. TIP: Go for an earlier dinner before 7pm to get a walk in table or make reservations ahead of time.

Yelp
Great food but terrible service. Our waiter was rude, inattentive, and charged us for bread he delivered but we didn't order. He then lorded over me asking for a tip watching me pull my wallet out and everything. It was very uncomfortable.

Eduardo C.

Yelp
Overpriced and restaurant in need of a renovation. Our schnitzel was oily and tasteless and the pork has nothing special. We've been traveling in Germany for 10 days and the waiter Daniel was very competent in presenting the rudest service possible we had so far. As the restaurant was empty at lunch time, I guess it was great in the past but decadent at present. It can be a tourist trap, as it was for us. Don't waste your time there.

A B.

Yelp
This restaurant has a white tablecloth seating area upstairs and simpler Wirtshaus seating downstairs. The dishes served differ a bit, but the ones served in both areas are pricier upstairs. Which is not to say that the food is good value downstairs; the opera location obviously allows charging a premium. Came here because I read somewhere that their Kaiserschmarrn was very good, but it is just average when compared to local, admittedly high, benchmarks. Wirtshaus food I saw on other tables wouldn't entice me to return, at those opera prices. Oh, and do know that Spaten beer is a relatively harsh taste, considered among the weakest of the original Munich-style beers. Maybe that's why they highlight their beer as the oldest rather than best beer in their advertising.

Yelp
A rustic-style, beautifully decorated restaurant! Located in close proximity to the Munich Residence, my friends and I decided to have a late lunch here. I ordered the German meatloaf, Leberkäse, and it was delicious! The potatoes on the side were extra crispy, cut almost like hash browns. Soooo good! For dessert, we had the apple fritters with raspberry coulis - the perfect sweet treat! The warm fritters paired perfectly with the cold vanilla bean ice cream. I also tried the green hot tea. I loved the kettle set up, and the tea cookies were so cute! Would definitely return if back in town.

Cindy H.

Yelp
Although the food was good, the people who answer the phone are rude. They also ended up reserving us on the wrong floor even though my open table reservation was clear which floor we wanted. Unfortunately, our server spoke no English and when we tried to find another server who we could communicate with, we were chastised! I am unable to eat gluten, and even though I marked it on my reservation, I couldn't communicate this to our server at all. There are other places to go in Munich for good Bavarian food...you don't need to choose a place where the service isn't good!

Yelp
This place was recommended as a traditional Bavarian restaurant and it fit the bill perfectly. We were seated in an elegant upstairs dining room with a fantastic view of the square and Opera building. Our server was wonderful and ever so professional and efficient. He was very helpful in ordering. When no small side salad seemed apparent on the menu he said they would gladly prepare one. The menu is extensive of traditional items. A bread basket of truly wonderful breads and pretzels was quickly delivered after we got beer to start. I ordered a traditional Bavarian dish (Tafelspitz) of very thinly sliced beef, and accompanied with pieces of carrot and potato that were also shaved on top with shavings of a mild horseradish. It came in a low bowl in a light broth and herbs. Delicious! The side was a marinated spinach that was very flavorful, and the side salad was so fresh with greens, tomatoes and onion, nicely dressed. Two of my dinner companions had a pork dish, schweinbraten, that came with a side of sauerkraut. I tried a bit of the sauerkraut. Now I have eaten sauerkraut forever, but this was the best tasting I ever ate, and very fresh. Overall an excellent memorable meal. I was quite full and the prices were not bad. GO!

Yelp
Great food and service. Every course was excellent and the waiter was very helpful with recommendations.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5.0 Service: 3.0/5.0 Value: 2.5/5.0 Decor: 3.5/5.0 Overall: 3.5/5.0 Food was good as was the service. But prices are really high, kind of tourist-trappy in a not-super popular/crowded kind of way. I would skip if on a budget, but the location is nice.
google avatar

Kurtis J.

Yelp
Great food all around, found this place slightly missing the mark on price, however. Didn't find the premium price justifying the food, especially visiting other great places around Munich. The oysters were solid and fresh. Would also recommend the schnitzel, it was great balanced dish with the side choice. Beef carpaccio was so-so.

Paul S.

Yelp
Very good dining location away from the busy central Marienplatz. Worth the visit especially if you are coming from or going to the residenz. Reservations required I saw so many sent away without reservations. A must have.

Yelp
Historical place by the opera in Munich. The place, building and interior is awesome!! The food was good too and of course they have good beer. Looked expensive!! A family member paid and wouldn't let me see the bill. Ich Leibe München!!

Yelp
Spatenhaus's upper restaurant is an Institution in Munich favoured by the locals. The dining room is elegant and upscale with white linen tablecloths and fresh flowers on the tables with a great view of Marienplatz. At the same time it has a calm relaxed feeling to it. The Weiner Schnitzel is delicious and without a doubt the best in town; the new potatoes (either boiled or pan roasted) are amazing and the fresh baked bread mouth watering. The bread basket is an additional charge but it is well worth it. It is served with a garlic whipped mild cheese and or butter and is delicious. For anyone desiring high quality Bavarian food, you must go to Spatenhaus. Highly recommended. Reservations required.

Yelp
I had one of the best meals of my life here. I was traveling alone and spent the day walking all across Munich and just happened upon this place. I probably ate a meal that would be split between two but who cares I was on vacation. The pork knuckle had a super tough crust that I had to stab with my sharp knife to break. It was AMAZING. Might just order more of that next time I go back. Everything else in my picture was delicious but pork knuckle was definitely the highlight
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Before coming to Munich my mom insisted that I eat some Wiener schnitzel for her. I've never had it before so I googled the best Wiener schnitzel in Munich, which recommended Spatenhaus. Man am I glad I went. That was quite possibly the best meal I have ever eaten in my life. The breading was crunchy and super light. The meat was very tender. I have no idea what was in the cucumber and dill salad but I'm craving more already. I wish I could take this restaurant home with me. Vielen Dank liebe Deutschland!

Florent G.

Yelp
The place is funny. Seems typical but it s for tourists the food is very good and good portion but you have to wait so long. More than 1 hour for 3 shrimps and aspergus. Despite, this is good with many tasty dishes. And beautiful location in front of the opera
google avatar

Chris Z.

Yelp
This is one of the many places in Munich where beer, food and the views map together. Although we did not got here to eat our late afternoon drinks and the people watching were outstanding. I have heard great things about the food and all from guest close to us looked great. Next time in Munich we will both eat and drink here!

Marko D.

Yelp
Brutwurst platter and creamy mushroom was excellent. Not sure who wrights these low star reviews as everything is as we wanted to taste from local menu. And this at the end....

Yelp
Super cuisine, excellent service and atmosphere! Made for unforgettable evening with friends.

Yelp
Went here for our last dinner in Munich. This is a lovely restaurant across from the Opera. The waiters spoke English which was very helpful. This place was very classy, and while the food was a little pricey, it was very good. Of course we had to get a Spaten, which was delicious. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice date night in Munich.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Although most sites list this as a 5 star restaurant, it is quite ordinary. The view of the square & opera house is nice, the menu so-so, the service is good. Thinking that we were going to a 5 star restaurant, we dressed up only to find folks in jeans & t shirts dining with us. There is also much confusion re: reservations. I reserved on Open Table, thinking that I reserved for the more elegant upstairs. The downstairs people said my reservation was for upstairs, the upstairs people claimed that my reservation was for downstairs, but they would accommodate us. I doubt that downstairs would require a reservation.

Marc A.

Yelp
Our favorite upscale Bavarian restaurant. Yes it is a little more expensive than you'd pay at one of the more normal beerhalls but the food is definitely better. If you happen to be there in May/June, be sure to try any and all asparagus dishes.

Yelp
A lovely spot for traditional Bavarian cuisine. My wife and I often enjoy food from this region and we found our first visit to Spatenhaus to be a very pleasant dining experience. It was an exceptionally hot August afternoon, so we sat inside with welcome air conditioning. Our table service was quick and friendly with an English-speaking waiter and menu (even though we both speak German). We started with a couple radlers -- the very popular 1/2 lager beer & lemonade summer beverage. Promptly, a basket of large, soft homemade pretzels arrived tableside. My wife ordered a nice salad and some delicious mushroom cream soup. Chanterelles were in peak season and the chef was quite generous. I had a yummy salad along with a delightful consommé with jumbo semolina dumplings -- very simple and just fabulous. We very much enjoyed our lighter lunch and ordered another round of refreshing radlers as we relaxed and chatted a bit after our meals. The restaurant does a brisk business -- located in the center of the Marienplatz -- but handles the tourist crowds quite well. Our fellow dinners also seemed very satisfied. We found that the famous Spatenhaus restaurant has a well deserved reputation for tasty and well prepared traditional cuisine, with good service and at moderate prices. We would definitely dine here again and we certainly recommend this place to others.

Yelp
Stuffy, snobby... this place is definitely nicht für mich. I felt like Ace Ventura in the mansion party scene with the Monopoly guy. It was basically a less tongue-in-cheek version of THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj1wcs7SZj0 ... but with exponentially more old-timey aged Monopoly guys. I think this place is meant more for the geriatric opera crowd or the grandmas and grandpas touring the city center, because our group of 4 was the youngest by about 100 years (swear.to.god... I saw the crypt keeper here). But after looking at the menu it kind of makes sense. It was all that crazy carb-heavy, brown, beige, white gravy heavy foods that my grandma loves... because , well, she's old and her taste-buds are probably dead already. I, on the other hand, am clinging to youth for dear life and can't afford to eat that way in my condition (which isn't so much a condition as it is more of my not being able to afford a new wardrobe of pantalones if I get any fatter). I was turned off as soon as we walked in here when went to head into the dining room and a bitter elderly woman with a yappy little purebred dog (allowed inside the main restaurant dining room) stood up and knowingly pushed her chair into our pathway. Then proceeded to call one of the male servers over with her fur coat and ordered him to put it on her... while the four in my group all waited, huddles and backed into a corner. Her entire old biddy group looked on while even her little dog had more room (and respect than us). When we finally broke through, we were sat at an enormous square table that could have easily fit 12 people, only they took away the other chairs so we all had seats at the far opposite sides of the table, unable to even communicate with each other. What a great meal this should be, right? We asked to sit at one of 60 other open tables that were smaller in the dining room, but were told those were saved. ALL OF THEM. Really? Whatever. Fine. We perused the menu and I not only couldn't find a single thing on the menu that I felt shouldn't come with a side of Lipitor, but we couldn't order even if we'd wanted to. We sat and sat and sat and sat. No drinks, not even water, no bread, no nothing. We tried to flag down servers who continued to tend to the other tables and even go and start new tables who had just walked in and been sat (in the tables that we were told we saved). Some of the servers would ignore us completely, some would bump into our chairs and say nothing as they passed, and others would make a motion like they knew we were waiting and that they'd be right over, but none ever came back. We waited 25 minutes before we ended up packing up our coats, hats, gloves, etc and deciding to leave. As we got up to leave it was obvious that every one of the staff members noticed us and seemed relieved. It was so weird... mainly because in America, old people tables are known for being some of the most work and the worst tippers, while a table of young, bright whippersnappers like ourselves would be a pretty hot commodity. Not here, apparently. The first and only verbal contact we had with a server was when I left my hat at the table, and a server found it and tossed it over to me on my way out the door... which was funny because they literally rushed to the table once we left to clear our menus and set the chairs back up but couldn't have cared less about coming over during the nearly 30 minutes we sat with nothing. Let the record show that I do normally respect my elders, but that I also ask for a just a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t in return as well. Here, there was none of that. I have no doubt that they deliberately treated us poorly, whether it was because we were young, weren't wearing stuffy turtlenecks or mink stoles, or maybe because we're American, and for whichever reason(s) it was, I can only recommend this place to as a decent hang if you're a classic board game icon, hoity-toity biotch, and/or wicked witch of the west... who all already appear to be regulars here.

Yelp
The upstairs (white tablecloth dining room) is apparently more relaxed than the crowded and casual downstairs. I had the Bavarian platter which included an insane amount of meat. I shocked and amazed my colleagues when I actually finished the entire thing. I wouldn't recommend this entree unless you're prepared to fight back a 2 hour food coma :). The duck, pork, and sausages were all quite tasty. I was disappointed with my pre-main course pretzel which was a bit tough/stale. The dark beer served was very tasty. Service was good too, overall a decent traditional Bavarian meal.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Great food, excellent service and weissbier served nice and cold. I was recommended this place by one of the ladies in the office and we had a team dinner here and everyone enjoyed it. The duck or otherwise called bauerente was absolutely divine and the kartofflekanodle was stodgy and delicious. The portions were big and I could not finish it all. Will defenitely come back here and the staff are so friendly and excellent. Whilst it is a bit touristy it is probably the best duck I have had in a while and all of my German colleagues also enjoyed it very much :-))

Yelp
I am from Munich and this is ashaming for bavarian culture. Other bavarian restaurants nearby a lots of better like weisses brauhaus, hacker in Sendlinger Str. or paulaner. The service is nothing special, the food is nothing special, but they take more than double of the normal price. 3 baked chicken wings and about 25 French fries (yes, no problem to count them) for a price of 23 euros. I had to got out hungry because all other dishes where about the same or higher price. If you go there, sorry of you. Think it over, please.

Yelp
Situated in a fabulous location across from the Opera house, this Bavarian specialist is a wonderful place to enjoy traditional mixed with some more contemporary items in a beautiful setting. We intentionally sat in the upstairs dining area so that we could enjoy a more relaxed dinner while still experiencing the cuisine. My husband does not typically eat protein other than duck, fish and chicken. But when in Munich....you must indulge in the traditional pork! So he ordered the Bavarian plate which was the largest plate of pork, white sausages -which they are known for, and duck I have ever seen. I had grilled prawns with beautiful white asparagus (as they were seasonal) and seemed to be a special...there was an entire "Asparagus" menu! The wine selection was decent particularly because this place is a bier kind of place if you know what I mean. Hubby and friends enjoyed the local brews. My friend's schnitzel was also wonderful. I do not really eat much veal, never mind breaded and beautifully fried, but this preparation was quite good and worth a taste! While it might be considered touristy, this place is really worth trying especially if you're looking for the traditional Bavarian experience in a more elegant setting.

Yelp
A special evening in Munich with my wife. This was our fancy German good night out and it really delivers. Classic dishes, beautiful and traditional decor. It was the perfect compliment to our visit. It's in a beautiful area of the city, the Munich Opera is directly out the front door. The Pumpkin soup was the best I've ever had, if your there in season don't skip it!

Yelp
I visited with my coworkers for dinner on the recommendation of one of the coworkers. It's a charming restaurant, that was fairly busy when we arrived. Nonetheless, we had called ahead and were seated right away. As soon as we were seated, we saw our waitress nearby. She took one look at our table and appeared distressed. After several minutes she brought the menus over, without saying much. We didn't speak German so I was willing to chalk that up to a language barrier. That wouldn't explain the angry look on her face the entire evening. Eventually she got back around to take our orders. She seemed irritated with any interactions with us. We waited a moderate amount of time before receiving our food. I ordered the sausages on a plate of sauerkraut. It was delicious! My coworkers ordered the deer, belly of pork, and some vegetarian dishes. They all seemed pleased with their selections. When it was time to pay the check, she asked if we wanted it separate or together and we asked for separate. She groaned and walked away. When she finally brought our checks back, she took her time in coming back around. Most of my coworkers planned on paying in euro but two of us needed to pay with card. When she saw that we needed to pay with card, she grabbed the card, sighed heavily and stormed away. There were 7 of us and it took her 3-4 stops at our table to take care of everyone's checks. She would settle 2 or 3 and then walk away to do something else. Mind you, we all had our money out, ready to pay. I want to rate this place with 5 stars for the environment and food. The rest of the staff seemed to be happy and friendly. Unfortunately that wasn't our experience which is why I can only rate this place a 3. Maybe it was because we were American, who knows. I work with people all day, and I understand people have bad days, but we tried to make things as simple and easy as possible. Next time I'm in Munich, I think I'll be trying somewhere else, rather than risk the service I received tonight.

Yelp
We were in Munich this summer and came across this restaurant as we searched for local Bavarian cuisine. I had the elk and it was outstanding. My son had the veal schnitzel. Obviously good beer selection considering the location. The food was so great that we went back two days later. The service was also excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to try good Bavarian food in the area. We had already eaten at a few tourist traps where the same dishes were done horribly. Big difference. Just go straight to this place.

Yelp
We came by this restaurant while strolling towards English Garden after touring Marienplatz and the adjacent farmers market. It's location right across the square from the national theater, opera house and the Residenz museum made it an ideal spot to got a sidewalk table to people watch. The beer was refreshingly cold and the freshly baked apple strudel was heavenly! We noted this is where the #19 tram stops; we were tempted to take this tram that traverses the city center but gave up because of uncertainty about time.

Yelp
I came here per the recommendation of a friend. She advised we try the schnitzel and crispy duck. My British friend and I came here for a late dinner and sat outside. The night was warm and the setting really is beautiful at night. Unfortunately, they were out of duck! Probably a good sign that people must have also loved this dish... Oh well, we both got the schnitzel and it was very yummy! We both ordered bellinis and they were delicious. Our waiter was kind and spoke English. Service was great by European standards. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because although our food was good I would like to try other dishes before giving a 5 star review.

Yelp
Spatenhaus is my favorite restaurant in Munich. Their food is excellent and the atmosphere is less touristy than most--perhaps because it's right by the Opera and attracts a more upscale local clientele. My girlfriend and I came with some German colleagues, which was nice because they helped us pick out some great local dishes. Dinner here was one of the highlights of our trip. I had the crispy Bavarian pork in a delicious dark beer sauce. It came with two enormous potato dumplings and I barely managed to eat half my plate--I was stuffed! My girlfriend had the veal goulash with mushroom spaetzle--also delicious. I washed dinner down with a dunkles and pils--both were wonderful. We were all too stuffed for dessert and instead topped the evening off with some williams (pear brandy). I definitely recommend Spatenhaus, but suggest making reservations because it was packed.

Yelp
This is traditional Bavarian cuisine located in the center of where the shopping and stores are. It's right in front of the opera house. We sat outside and were given English menus ( I guess they overheard us talking). It was interesting to see the translations, but anyways... I ordered a radler and got the pan fried "rosefish" which came with a remoulade sauce and potato salad. My Dad got a beer and had the crispy duck which came with blue cabbage. The portion's were huge! For the fish, it was 2 fillets that were lightly fried. The fish was fresh and crispy, and the sauce was tangy. Use the lemon that comes with it to really enhance the flavors. The potato salad was delicious, it was typical German potato salad but it was a large amount for a side. My Dad's duck was basically half a duck, and he thoroughly enjoyed it, especially since the skin was light and crispy and there wasn't very much fat in between. The cabbage was tasty as well. The service was good, up until the point when we wanted to get the check. Our waiter seemed to disappear for 10 min and then would go to tables around us when he reappeared again. The prices are about double then other Bavarian places in the area; for just the 2 of us it was about €50. However, the portion's were large and everything was very good. Tip: most restaurants have a basket of bread and/or pretzels out on the table, but know that it's not complementary like it is in the states. They will charge you if you eat any. Great place to go on a beautiful day and sit outside!
