Spiced Roots Restaurant

Absolutely amazing food and the staff there are very friendly! We had prawns and doubles for starters and oxtail, jerk chicken for main and banana bread for dessert. They were all fantastic. I would definitely go back when I come to Oxford next time!! Also 2 for 1 cocktails all day 😀

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Great food, great atmosphere, great staff, great place to visit. If you like Caribbean food or would like a change from the usual and you like supporting Independent’s then this place comes highly recommended. I can’t resist the Jerk Chicken with its great flavour and succulent taste. My wife had the meat free Grenadian Run Down which she said was excellent. Everyone there is so friendly and it has a real family feel about it. Backstory On our way to a show at the o2 Academy we were hoping to find this lovely restaurant we remembered visiting the last time we were here. As luck would have it we found it but it was Friday night and we didn’t have a reservation. Unsurprisingly, it was fully booked but we were offered a place to eat by the bar. We explained we were here for a show and wouldn’t be long and were then offered a table that was reserved for a later time.

If you have not yet tried this restaurant make it next on your list!! I have been here for both lunch and evening meal and every time it is amazing. The food the atmosphere and most importantly the staff are the best!!! Big portions for good prices. Shoutout to Melissa for the delicious cocktails too. Really highly recommend.

Celebrated our friend’s birthday, the staff were very nice and accommodating. They gave the celebrant a cocktail on the house which we appreciate! also the party loved the Jamaican Paradise cocktail! love the vibe of the restaurant overall. Ordered the grilled octopus as starter and tried the tiger prawn as well, both were delicious. And got the oxtail for mains, loved it too! the spices were just perfect and meat was tender. The mac & cheese also a good pair. Got the homemade sorrel which was some kind of herbal drink, it’s sweet but very refreshing. I’ll come back to try other dishes!

Excellent little restaurant serving West Indian classic dishes - not a huge menu. I liked how they had slightly refined the original recipes and the presentation was perfect. It had the curried goat 9had no bones). The rum cake was great - not over soaked in rum. We had a rum punch and that was also excellent. It was super hot on arrival (not spicy hot but food hot). The 2 ladies serving were excellent and super attentive - just perfect.

Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was great, we enjoyed the jerk chicken, curry goat and festivals. The flavour combinations were very warming; the smokiness of the jerk chicken, the spices in the curry goat and the cinnamon on the festivals took my tastebuds on a culinary adventure. Worth a visit if you’re living in Cowley. Not the cheapest you can get but a treat if you’re up for it.

Food was excellent and the staff were so friendly. Can recommend the homemade ginger beer as well if you like a big hit of ginger. Would definitely go back again.

I have been a regular customer of this restaurant. It has been my routine to come here for dinner every weekend as a reward for myself in the week. I’ve chosen to set foot in this restaurant, amongst many eateries in Oxford, aa this restaurant has a hearty commitment to bringing excellent quality and best experience to its customers. In terms of the food, you can tell that each and every ingredient on the plate has been conscientiously chosen and diligently seasoned to bring out the best out of it. Even the greens on the side of the main dish have been nicely marinated, not to mention the component which is at the centre of the dish!! Here are the dishes which I have tried and would highly recommend: the chicken main dish, the oxtail main dish, and the main dish with ackee. All the options on the dessert menu are superb. Every dish is more than well worth the money spent. A very important plus is the extremely friendly attitude of the staff in the restaurant. Their hospitality always makes me feel like I’m back home.

A surprising find in this Oxford neighborhood while visiting my daughter abroad. The environment was welcoming and upbeat, and food was flavorful. A must visit if you are in the area and looking for some spice.

This was my best dining experience in Oxford. The food was great. I had a Trini Doubles and KingFish Steak and all was very very well! The service was superb and the drinks were well prepared. I highly recommend Spiced Roots to anyone visiting the Oxford area. It is worth the drive. To ensure you get a seat, please make a reservation in advance. The food is great so it is always full!

Absolutely amazing food and great service! The festivals (fried sweet dough), fried plantains, jerk tempeh and pumpkin soup were all to die for. But really everything had amazing plating, sauces, garnishes and flavors. The atmosphere and music take you away to the Caribbean and we really appreciated the little details in a small space. All around a wonderful culinary experience! We told our server we need a Spiced Roots to open in Los Angeles!

This is a special little place with a delightful, hardworking staff that serves up immensely satisfying food and drink. Our only complaint is the same one we have had with every small dinner venue we've been to in Oxford: they seem to want you to leave almost as soon as you've sat down and ordered. Now, I don't need to linger for hours, but I would have enjoyed being able to have a cocktail and appetizer prior to ordering my second cocktail and main course. As it was, they asked us to order everything all together (something to do with the kitchen needing to keep sides and mains sorted). They did let us wait until our rum drinks (gorgeous) and starter were served to order our main courses. Still, the fantastic goat curry was on the table before our first drink was halfway consumed. Some places will tell you ahead of time that you can't have the table longer than 60 or 90 minutes, and that's fine because I know ahead of time what to expect. Here at Spiced Roots we were in and out in 45 minutes or less (it cost about 1.25 pounds per minute for the two of us). It was such a disappointment because it was the place I was most looking forward to dining at during the whole of our three weeks in the UK. I booked early on a Friday, but perhaps another night would have been better. BTW- although the place started to fill up around 5:45-6, there were at least two free tables and four counter seats empty when we left at 6:15 or so. I highly recommend the place for its tasty dishes and fun drinks, but come prepared to be in and out fairly quickly.

I don't easily give out 5 stars but Spiced Roots is one of those rare restaurants that managed to earn a 5 star rating from me. First, friendly and knowledgeable staff, quaint atmosphere, clean restaurant and excellent food handling. All the things that I consider in all my ratings. Then there is the food!!! Oh my Gosh the food!!! The depth and layers of flavor can't easily be described in words. Experiencing the food here literally requires you to take a bite, put down your utensils and then simply savour the experience of your pallet. The jerk chicken was on point with a flavour that was sufficiently spicy and hints of slight sweet and smoky end notes lingering. The trini doubles and roti with curry were equally tasty. Finally the Caribbean rum cake combined so well with the homemade run and raisin ice cream with the rum slightly cutting the sweet of the cake. Overall I highly recommend Spiced Roots.

Had to come twice during our visit to Oxford! Great vegetarian options as well as jerk chicken and goat curry. Rum punch and rum cake - yum!

Who knew the best meal we'd have in Oxford was at a little Caribbean restaurant! The oxtail and callalou was perfect and the service wonderful and friendly. The paleo was also very good but I was so full I couldn't finish it. It's been an hour since we left and I still feel like I'm going to explode. Worth it though. Totally worth it. Oh and I ordered ginger lemon and tea while they used a tea bag, they also added fresh ginger and lemon. Perfect. Thank you for a wonderful meal!!

The jerk chicken is gluten free and it is fabulous! It's a very large serving, so it could probably be shared between two people. The staff was so friendly and the service was excellent.
